CAP 20 CAP 20 - Name Submissions

Status
Not open for further replies.
It's the naming stage! I love this stage because it means we finally get to stop referring to the thing we're making as CAP 20 or CAP20 or CAP or some such.

If you are inspired by the winning art design and have come up with a good and unique name you'd like the CAP to be known by, please submit your idea here and we will put it up for a vote against all other users' ideas. Final submissions must conform to the submission rules, so please read them carefully. Breaking the posting rules can also result in disqualification.

RULES:

Legal name submissions must meet the following standards
  • Names must start with a capital letter.
  • Names cannot be longer than 11 letters.
  • Names can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 1-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Period (.)
    • Space
  • No more than two capital letters can be included in the name, and capital letters cannot be consecutive.
  • A maximum of two non-letters can be included in the name, and a maximum of one non-letter of each type can be included (ie. You can't have two numbers, or two apostrophes, but you could have one number and one apostrophe)

WIPs
Work In Progress (WIP) Names can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Names can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with lists of Names. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP names by posting them repeatedly, or making minor spelling changes of a letter or two. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all names by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Final Submissions
Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person. Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

Name Final Submissions can only be posted after a CAP Moderator posts in the thread announcing that final submissions are open. Any Final Submission posted prior to the Moderator announcement post will disqualify the submitter from the poll entirely. Even if the offending post is edited later or deleted, the submitter will still be disqualified for the remainder of the thread. This ensures that there is some time for discussion and that all submitters have equal opportunity to post Final Submissions without anyone unfairly "jumping the gun".

Please make a new post after the CAP moderator announcement for Final Submissions. Do not edit a previous post prior to the announcement to make it a Final Submission. All posts prior to the announcement post will be ignored for purposes of making the Name Poll.

Final submissions must provide one sentence (25 words maximum) explaining the etymology of the name.

Final submissions must provide a common English pronunciation. The common pronunciation can be made in whatever format you feel best conveys the pronunciation to most English speakers. (You may optionally also provide an IPA pronunciation. For information about IPA and processing words into IPA read this guide: IPA For English. There are also numerous phonetic translation tools online that can help.)

Format
Name Final Submissions must be posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on its own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • The Name submission in bold.
  • A blank line
  • A one line description of the etymology of the name or why it is appropriate for our Pokemon. (25 words maximum)
  • A blank line
  • "Pronounced: <common English pronunciation>"
  • "IPA: <IPA pronunciation>" (optional)
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:
Final Submission

Syclant

A combination of "Icicle" + "Ant".

Pronounced: "SICKLE-ant"
IPA: sɪkəlænt

This name was originally submitted by Lawman on the very first CAP project. It is simple, elegant, and easy to pronounce (even if you are pronouncing it wrong), which is why it was chosen as the official name for CAP1!

Leadership Team:

Ununhexium - Typing Leader
trc - Abilities Leader
HeaLnDeaL - Stats Leader
Snobalt - Movepool Leader

Concept:
Name: Use the Boost to Get Through!

General Description: A sweeper with several boosting options that result in completely different checks and counters. While each set should be viable in its own right, the unpredictability of this Pokemon should make it much better than any one set alone.

Justification: In the early days of Pokemon X and Y, we experienced the first Pokemon that could (viably) boost and sweep from either the physical or special side: Mega Lucario. While it was clear his unpredictability could have a devastating effect (having your Chansey eat a Close Combat, Will-O-Wisping on the Nasty Plot, etc.) the true extent to which this could make a Pokemon better was masked by the fact that Lucario's sets were both already amazing. The purpose of this concept would therefore be to explore the impact of unpredictability in sweepers by creating a Pokemon that can run several boosting sets, none of which are dominant in their own right, but that when combined can result in an extremely dangerous threat.

Questions To Be Answered:
  • Is there a limit to how much unpredictability can make a Pokemon better? Can it make a decent Pokemon great? Or can it only make them usable?
  • How does being unpredictable with boosting options compare to other forms of unpredictability (such as uncommon coverage moves or trying to speed creep certain threats)? Is unpredictability in sweepers inherently more dangerous because of how easily they can win a game?
  • For a Pokemon that is already unpredictable, will we see the use of strange coverage moves (as many sweepers tend to run) or will it tend to stick to standard sets because it already has the element of surprise?
  • Which boosting moves are distinct enough to completely change a Pokemon's checks/counters? Are Swords Dance, Nasty Plot, and Agility the only ones that can fit this concept? Or is there a way to incorporate moves such as Dragon Dance without giving the Pokemon "the best of both worlds".
  • How effective will double boosting sets be on this Pokemon? Will the ability to "pick your counters" on a Pokemon already designed to bypass its counters be too good? Or can it be designed so that the loss of coverage will still leave it with several checks and counters on any set?
  • To what extent will teams have to prepare for this Pokemon? Will they have to pack several checks/counters like for M-Lucario? Or will they be able to just use a standard team so long as they can identify the set early?
Type: Water / Steel
Abilities: Water Veil / Heatproof
Stats: 103 HP / 110 Atk / 90 Def / 95 SpA / 65 SpD / 97 Spe

Let's see...

Valhulla

"Valhalla" + "Hull"

Pronounced: "Val-HUL-lah"
IPA: vælhʌlə

From Valhalla, the heavenly warrior hall in Norse mythology, and the hull of a ship.

Not the most comfortable with the name thus far, since 'Valhalla', while Norse, is only tangentially related to a viking ship. The name flows nicely, at least.

Oarmagod

...

Sculkraken or Scullkraken

"Sculling" -- rowing a boat
and references Gyarados's old name of "Skulkraken" in the Red and Blue beta

I came up with this for the boat a while ago, I think it sounds pretty epic.

Oarbarus
OR-bar-us

Comes from "Oar" and "Barbarus", which is Latin for Barbarian.

WIP

Noarship

Derived from "oar," "ship," and "Norse."

Pronounced: NOHR-ship
IPA: ˈnoʊrʃɪp

It manages to refer to every major aspect of the CAP's design without being too complicated. I quite like it.

Naglferrum

(Nah-gul-feh-rum)

Naglfar is the name of the ship in Norse mythology made out of the nails of the dead that will ferry troops to fight with the gods during Ragnarök. Ferrum is the Latin term for iron, which this ship-based Pokemon uses to protect itself (on its shields).

WIP

Maraudoar

"Marauder" + "Oar"

Pronunciation: Ma-RAW-door

From "Marauder", which is a synonym for pirate, and "Oar".

Edit: changed to Maraudoar rather than Maraudark at paintseagull 's suggestion

Zinkingis

"Zin" + "king" + "is"

Pronounced: Zin-king-is
IPA: zɪnkɪŋɪs

"Zin" are malevolent water spirits that live in the Niger River, according to West African folklore. "King" is used to refer that this Pokemon is the king of the Zin. "Is" is used as a kind of way to describe king's use for Zin.

i ran this by a few ppl in #cap, seemed to have a good reception

WIP

Mr. Boat

Oarly

Ranchorok

Naviathan

Pronunciation: Nuh-VAHY-Uh-Thun (The A's take a low U pronunciation)

A blend of the words "Navigation" (a purpose of longship use throughout history) and "Leviathan" (a Biblical, large aquatic creature/monster)

Navigaunt

Pronunciation: Nah-VEH-Gawnt

Corruption of the word "navigant". Mix of "navigation" and "gaunt" (referring to grim, as CAP20 looks forbidding and fierce in the face of battle).

Going Merry

But seriously, Noarship and Sculkraken are my favorite names so far because they flow really well with the Norse theme, especially considering that this is one of their longboats. Naviathan is next because it implies a skill that CAP 20 likely has, that being navigation.

WIP

Shiprekt

reason: CAP 20 gonna be saying bop to all its opponents
Also obviously it's a word corruption of shipwrecked, and corruptions are common, like in Koffing/Weezing, Boldore, Deino, Eelektrik, Foongus, Throh/Sawk, Purrloin, Wynaut.... I could keep going on

Jianium

[gee - awn - ee - um]

Based off of the Chinese word for river, jiāng, 江, along with titanium.

WIP

Tyranny

Tyr + Tyranny

Tyr is a Norse god of war tyranny because it messes stuff up amirite

WIP

Ferroshore

Ferrous + shore + ferocius. Shore is because ships have to start their journey and end it on a shore.

Pronounced: Feir-AU-shore

Wip again!

Rumbhull

Rumble+Hull. Rumble, as the art conveys it to be somewhat heavy, and able to rumble. Ships also makes rumbling sounds.

Pronounced: Ruhmb+HULL

Ranaweigh

Rán is a Nordic sea goddess. Aweigh refers to an anchor's position. Judging by the appearance of CAP, I'd probably run away from it.

Pronounced: RAN-uh-way

IPA: rænəweɪ

Disqualified: Final Submission (Did not follow the specified final submission format)

Yachtsaur

Pronounced: YAT-ZOR

Combination of nice boats, yachts, and the last part of the word dinosaur. Fitting for a lizard type creature :J

Galloy

Pretty simple one here; a galley is a type of warship, and an alloy is a combination of multiple metals. Fits pretty well imo

Pronounced GAL-loy
