Comprehensive Guide to HP EVs in Gen 3 NU
The goal of leftovers Pokémon is to reach the optimal HP for maximum leftovers recovery. However, in the case of Pokemon with very low HP in relation to their defenses, they gain more value from having max HP investment regardless of suboptimal leftovers (ex: Shuckle, Lairon, Defensive Kingler, etc.)
The goal of non-leftovers Pokémon is to reach an HP stat that maximizes their capacity to switch into entry hazards (spikes).
The goal of substitute abusers is to ideally reach an HP stat that avoids destruction from Seismic Toss/ Night Shade (reaches 404 HP, substitute has 101 HP and doesn’t break to 100 damage)
These are ideal goals. However it must be said that EVing is dynamic, and often these ideal goals can be compromised by the need to invest elsewhere.
Important HP EVs are BOLDED
Leftovers
(HP number)/16 = Amount of HP healed each turn from leftovers (if a decimal, always round down to whole number)
Ex: 303/16 = 18.9375 = 18 HP healed each turn
Format:
Base HP stat | List of Pokémon with the HP stat
HP EVs | HP stat | Amount of leftovers recovered each turn (raw value) | any special reasoning for the HP investment
45 Haunter, Houndour, Anorith, Delibird
0 EVs | 231 | 14 (14.4375) 36 EVs | 240 | 15 100 EVs | 256 | 16 164 EVs | 272 | 17 228 EVs | 288 | 18 |
50 Roselia, Sableye, Mawile, Hitmonchan, Magcargo, Grovyle, Vibrava, Cubone, Sandshrew
0 EVs | 241 | 15 (15.0625) 60 EVs | 256 | 16 124 EVs | 272 | 17 188 EVs | 288 | 18 252 EVs | 304 | 19 |
52 Farfetch’d
0 EVs | 245 | 15 (15.3125) 44 EVs | 256 | 16 108 EVs | 272 | 17 172 EVs | 288 | 18 236 EVs | 304 | 19 EVing for maximum leftovers recovery isn’t too applicable. Especially since he runs berries most of the time. |
55 Huntail, Kingler, Raticate, Seadra, Ledian, Graveler, Togetic, Aipom
0 EVs | 251 | 15 (15.6875) 20 EVs | 256 | 16 84 EVs | 272 | 17 148 EVs | 288 | 18 212 EVs | 304 | 19 0 EVs or 20 Evs on offensive leftovers variants of these Pokemon Max HP should generally be used on Graveler, Togetic, Ledian, and defensive Kingler because their stats are highly polarized (low HP, high defenses) |
59 Wartortle
0 EVs | 259 | 16 (16.1875) 52 EVs | 272 | 17 116 EVs | 288 | 18 180 EVs | 304 | 19 244 EVs | 320 | 20 Wartortle is generally only usable on stall, so max HP or this 244 EV benchmark are good choices. |
60 Plusle, Minun, Pelipper, Metang, Kecleon, Murkrow, Arbok, Dustox, Butterfree, Parasect, Lairon, Gloom
0 EVs | 261 | 16 (16.3125) 44 EVs | 272 | 17 108 EVs | 288 | 18 172 EVs | 304 | 19 236 EVs | 320 | 20 0 EVs is practical on offensive Plusle and Butterfree. Arbok and Murkrow tend to always run Choice Band, so this isn’t applicable. 44 EVs is a good consideration on certain Plusle, Minun, Metang. 236 EVs fits well on screen setter Minun, bulky Metang, Pelipper, Parasect. However, Metang, Dustox, Lairon, Pelipper may like max HP regardless of optimal leftovers because of their polarized stat spreads |
63 Crawdaunt
0 EVs | 267 | 16 (16.6875) 20 EVs | 272 | 17 84 EVs | 288 | 18 148 EVs | 304 | 19 212 EVs | 320 | 20 20 EVs is a reasonable amount to allocate to HP, and gives Crawdaunt greater staying power |
65 Chimecho, Flareon, Tangela, Shelgon, Yanma, Volbeat, Illumise, Beedrill, Poliwhirl
0 EVs | 271 | 16 (16.9375) 4 EVs | 272 | 17 68 EVs | 288 | 18 132 EVs | 304 | 19 196 EVs | 320 | 20 There is no reason to not spare 4 EVs for HP on Chimecho, Flareon, Tangela, Volbeat, or Shelgon, even on offensive sets. Yanma and Poliwhirl don’t run Leftovers, so this benchmark does not apply to them. 196 EVs is a good place to end on defensive Chimecho variants. |
70 Torkoal, Mightyena, Cacturne, Venomoth, Pupitar, Sudowoodo, Masquerain, Ariados, Delcatty, Castform, Flaaffy
0 EVs | 281 | 17 (17.5625) 28 EVs | 288 | 18 92 EVs | 304 | 19 156 EVs | 320 | 20 220 EVs | 336 | 21 Torkoal and Sudowoodo have highly polarized stat spreads, they may disregard these optimal leftovers EVs and simply use 252 EVs. |
73 Seviper
0 EVs | 287 | 17 (17.9375) 4 EVs | 288 | 18 68 EVs | 304 | 19 132 EVs | 320 | 20 196 EVs | 336 | 21 4 EVs is incredibly easy to spare. Seviper should always have optimal leftovers recovery. |
75 Bellossom, Golbat, Octillery, Chinchou, Sunflora
0 EVs | 291 | 18 (18.1875) 52 EVs | 304 | 19 116 EVs | 320| 20 180 EVs | 336 | 21 244 EVs | 352 | 22 0 EVs on offensive sets (Sunny day sweeper Bellossom) 244 EVs on hard defensive sets (Spdef bellossom) |
80 Glalie, Vigoroth, Pidgeot, Seaking
0 EVs | 301 | 18 (18.8125) 12 EVs | 304 | 19 76 EVs | 320 | 20 140 EVs | 336 | 21 204 EVs | 352 | 22 12 EVs can very easily be spared on fast, strong Vigoroth sets, offensive Glalie sets, and sweeper Seaking sets. Pidgeot is almost always obligated to run Choice Band, so this benchmark does not apply. |
85 Furret
0 EVs | 311 | 19 (19.4375) 36 EVs | 320 | 20 100 EVs | 336 | 21 164 EVs | 352 | 22 228 EVs | 368 | 23 0 EVs or 36 EVs are suitable for a Substitute + Focus Punch set. |
90 Lickitung, Dewgong
0 EVs | 321 | 20 (20.0625) 60 EVs | 336 | 21 124 EVs | 352 | 22 188 EVs | 368 | 23 252 EVs | 384 | 24 0 EVs or 60 EVs are good benchmarks for a fast offensive Dewgong. 252 EVs is a good benchmark for a bulky stall Dewgong/Lickitung. |
99 Tropius
0 EVs | 339 | 21 (21.1875) 52 EVs | 352 | 22 116 EVs | 368 | 23 180 EVs | 384 | 24 244 EVs | 400 | 25 248 EVs | 401 | 25 (25.0625) | survives 5 seismic tosses/ night shades with leftovers, 4 without Tropius is highly customizable. The benchmark is dependent on how offensive or how bulky you plan to be. |
100 Swalot, Relicanth, Piloswine, Noctowl, Dunsparce
0 EVs | 341 | 21 (21.3125) 44 EVs | 352 | 22 108 EVs | 368 | 23 172 EVs | 384 | 24 236 EVs | 400 | 25 240 EVs | 401 | 25 (25.0625) | survives 5 seismic tosses/ night shades with leftovers, 4 without 252 EVs | 404 | 25 (25.25) | creates 101 hp substitutes 44 EVs is good on non-Substitute offensive sets 252 EVs is best for Substitute sets |
110 Whiscash
0 EVs | 361 | 22 (22.5625) 28 EVs | 368 | 23 92 EVs | 384 | 24 156 EVs | 400 | 25 160 EVs | 401 | 25 (25.0625) | survives 5 seismic tosses/ night shades with leftovers, 4 without 172 EVs| 404 | 25 (25.25) | creates 101 hp substitutes 220 EVs | 416 | 26 28 EVs is good on a non-Substitute set, 172 EVs is vital on a substitute set |
140 Wigglytuff
0 EVs | 421 | 26 (26.3125) 44 EVs | 432 | 27 108 EVs | 448 | 28 172 EVs | 464 | 29 236 EVs | 480 | 30 Wigglytuff has an excellent HP stat and horrible defenses. It is preferred to add EVs to defense or special defense rather than HP, so the 44 EVs for 27 leftovers per turn is the only feasible benchmark. |
170 Wailord
0 EVs | 481 | 30 (30.0625) 60 EVs | 496 | 31 124 EVs | 512 | 32 188 EVs | 528 | 33 252 | 544 | 34 |
Non-Leftovers (Choice Band, Lum Berry, Liechi Berry, Petaya Berry, Salac Berry)
Spikes damage:
1 layer – 12.5% damage (1/8)
2 layers – 16.67% damage (1/6)
3 layers – 25% damage (1/4)
To survive 4 switch ins onto 3 layers of spikes, you must not have an HP stat that calculates to a whole number for spikes damage from 3 layers. Avoid optimal lefties HP stats for these sets, as they result in a 4 hit KO from 3 layers of spikes (with no other chip).
HP stat must not be divisible by 4,6, or 8
(X) denotes that you faint after the respective number of turns (4, 6, or 8)
(*) indicates that you survive
Example: 304 HP
3 layers of spikes do 25% damage as you come in, 304/100 = 3.04; 3.04x25 = 76
76x4 = 304 (with this HP stat, 4 switchins into 3 layers of spikes will KO)
(1 layer) 304/ 8 = 38 (X)
(2 layers) 304/6 = 50.667 (*)
(rounds down to 50. Switching in 6 times to 2 layers adds up to 300 damage. 304-300 = 4 meaning you survive with 4 hp left)
(3 layers) 304/4 = 76 (X)
Meanwhile, 303 HP
303/100 = 3.03; 3.03x25 = 75.75 (rounds down to 75 damage)
303/8 = 37.875 (*)
303/6 = 50.5 (*)
303/4 = 75.75 (*)
Note: Reversal/ Flail sweepers should have an odd number of health
Belly Drum sweepers should have an even number of health (after a Substitute and subsequent Belly Drum, they will be in Salac Berry range)
