Yawn tendencies?

Yawn is a move that puts the target Pokemon to sleep after 2 turns that was first introduced in the Advanced Generation. However in D/P, Yawn now ignores all Accuracy and Evasion modifiers.

Many Pokemon can use Yawn to great effect (common ones include):

- Torkoal
- Jolteon
- Hippowdon
- Slowbro
- Empoleon
- Quagsire
- Slowking
- Vaporeon
- Umbreon
- Snorlax

and several others to promote switches or PHazing. My question is when faced with a Pokemon that uses Yawn, would people switch before or after the turn their Pokemon would fall asleep?

Well, if the Yawn user is a tank, they could just use yawn again...xD

Depends, if they see you use yawn they might let the pokemon stay in to absorb sleep and hit you (hard) before they tuck in. On the other hand if it's a dancer (any kind) it will likely sitch out to something that doesn't mind being asleep (cresselia anyone?).

It really just depends. If Umbreon used yawn on Heracross, you might want to get a Close Combat or Megahorn in. If it uses yawn on Gardevoir, that's when you would want to switch.

Don't forget Uxie. It uses yawn with great efficiency.

From what I see after I use yawn, the opponent usually switches, unless the they have sleep talk or something of the sort.

I guess it's situational and involves some common sense and a tiny bit of prediction. Thanks all =)

I normally let my pokemon fall asleep, to stop people who think they can just keep forcing me to switch by Yawning constantly.

I'll say! I've had great success using Yawn/U-Turn Uxie on Shoddy. After Yawn, I find that most people switch to Blissey or sometimes Heracross, but little do they know I have Dugtrio waiting in the wings to come in after U-Turn and eliminate a key threat without any need to sacrifice anything. Works so well so many times.

What I do when facing Yawn depends on the situation. If it's a stall team with Stealth Rock/Spikes and whatnot on the field it is best to just let something fall asleep to prevent wearing your team out with constant switches, but if they are going to set up you'll want to bring your counter in as quickly as possible to prevent a possible sweep.

when i use yawn i use it on something that can learn focus punch and/or pursuit if they switch to avoid the sleep i can potentally punish the switch with a focus punch to the face of the switch in or punish the yawned pokemon by pursuiting it on its way out

It depends. If whatever is getting Yawned has, say, Natural Cure, I'll stay in, take the sleep, then switch. Most people think "oh shi sleep clause :O". If it's a restalker, I'll take the sleep. If the sleep otherwise won't do much harm to me, I'll take the sleep. I only switch if it'll hurt me.

I run a Torkoal with Yawn, lava plume, SR, and rapid spin, and it usually works wonders if for nothing more than PHazing or getting SR up. As for yawn itself, one should yawn on the switch, causing the specsmence or whatever to either switch or become useless for the entire match. Only thing you gotta watch out for is things that know it's coming, hit you when you think they're gonna switch, and then switch to a counter without penalty.

Oddly enough, most of my opponents completely forget that I used Yawn in the first place. Then I get, "wtf, why did I fall asleep?"

If it's a fragile Pokemon that's trying to stat-up, then usually the opponent switches before Sleep comes into effect. If it's a bulkier Pokemon that can take a few hits, my opponent usually just sucks it up and hopes for the best. Either way, Yawn is an amazing move.

Blastoise can yawn well as well.

A good aspect of Yawn, appart from getting the sleep and forcing switches, is that it (obviously) pairs well with Protect. Protect is an excellent move on walls that don't have healing moves to get another turn of leftovers recovery. Pair them and you get two bonuses.

Oh, I forgot. Rather obviously, U-Turners (especially slow U-Turners or fast ones in trick room) love being Yawned. They can hit next turn AND switch, most of the time while also scouting what the foe's gonna do after the Yawn. (definately if they switch or not, and if the U-turner is slower, what attack they use, etc)

A gimicky set that works:

Jolteon:
Sub
Yawn
Thunder Wave
Filler

Sub if you predict a switch or status move or Yawn if they can't do much more that 50% to you. Thunder Wave surprises anything that thinks it can stop you.

This may sound trollish, but how about Thunderbolt for a "filler"? I'd never run a Jolteon without Thunderbolt, Pokemon without an attacking move on your team always bites you in the ass sooner or later, especially when it's one with subpar defenses.

When I get Yawned I try to lure the Yawener into Yawning my status sponge, I don't like taking a sleep with something I don't intend to. Of course, I'm not going to send a Rest/Sleep Talk Heatran into a Yawning Blastoise for obvious reasons.
