#469: Yanmega
Yanmega was a pretty cool guy in Gen 4, destroying the Elite Four, wrecking UU whilst he was allowed in and then proceeding to be a cool anti-lead for OU (although not necessarily an effective one) Unfortunately, gen 5 has not been good to him in any aspect. The only new things he gets are Frisk and, what, Bug Repellant? In return, things like Nattorei have come in who make him choose between HP Fire (thus death by Heatran) or not (thus layer upon layer of hazards), there are new, more exciting and viable Speed Boosters such as Sharpedo and Blaziken, who have far better STAB coverage. Heck, even as a Tinted Lens used he's now outclassed by Venomoth, because he's pretty much the only bug who doesn't get Butterfly Dance now. -_-
It's looking pretty bleak for Yanmega, but maybe he'll be allowed back into UU now that there's so much competition for him?
As you can see, Yanmega really hasn't gotten anything of note, and it doesn't help that half of his egg moves are inferior Bug type moves. So I suppose it's worth pointing out the positives which made Yanmega so good in the first place.
> Good Speed and Special Attack.
> Bolstered by two exclusive and powerful abilities.
Now, lets see how these have been shot down in Gen 5.
> His Special Attack is, urm, nothing special anymore thanks to power creep. Seriously, with pokémon like Roopushin, Hihidaruma and Shandera running around with 140+ attacking stats and no drawbacks, Yanmega may prove underwhelming. Not to mention that there's going to be some seriously bulky pokémon this gen that can take hits from him all day, thanks to the Prevo stone.
> His abilities are no longer anywhere near exclusive, with Speed Boost being given to Sharpedo and Blaziken, and Tinted Lens being given to a lot of rival Bug types. Sharpedo and Blaziken can both pull Speed Boost off better than Yanmega thanks to superior attacking stats, better movepools, and no crippling weakness to Stealth Rock. Blaziken even gets Baton Pass, which sure as hell screws Ninjask over. Venomoth can also take the cake as a rival Tinted Lens user thanks to the epic Butterfly Dance, which is surprisingly absent from Yanmega's movepool. If only Yanmega got Calm Mind... :)
All in all, Yanmega's best bet now is probably in its Choice Specs set, since it still has much higher SpA and Speed stats than Venomoth initially, preventing it from being outclassed. That, and it's fairly bulky for a Bug type. Shame about Stealth Rock...
Yanmega @ Choice Specs
Tinted Lens, Modest
4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Speed
~ Bug Buzz
~ Air Slash
~ HP Ground / Electric / Giga Drain
~ U Turn
Bug Buzz and Air Slash will dent most things, use the appropriate HP for anything you want to try and lure in, like Heatran or Gyarados. Giga Drain is also there should you fancy some healing and an option against bulky waters. U Turn is for scouting, which will hopefully be more viable now that Stealth Rock is harder to set (go Erufuun and Espeon!)
Ultimately, Yanmega may still be too powerful for UU with this set, but it's certainly going to have a much rougher time in OU. If it still remains banned from UU, then be prepared to never see it again.
