Despite being one of the most overlooked Pokemon in Monotype over the years, Volcanion has rose in popularity recently due to the dominance of Steel and the increased usage of Ice in the metagame. Its unique typing, colorful coverage options, Defog, and ability to soft check threats like Rillaboom and Choice Scarf Tapu Bulu in the Grass and Fairy matchups have all played a role in Volcanion's claim to fame. Flamethrower nails Steel- and Ice-types like Ferrothorn and Arcotzolt, which threaten Water teams greatly, while Earth Power provides coverage against a myriad of threats, namely Toxapex, Heatran, and opposing Volcanion. While Steam Eruption provides a secondary STAB attack, Toxic prevents Volcanion from being entirely passive against the likes of Gastrodon, Cradily, and Mantine. Slowbro pairs extremely well with Volcanion; it switches into and forces out Excadrill—Volcanion's biggest threat in the Steel matchup—and also safely brings Volcanion onto the field with Teleport. Swampert or Gastrodon acts as the important Electric-immune partner.
