Introduction

Stall in RU is something that has had a resurgence as of late, though it still definetely isn't as common as other core playstyles. But something I think I have never seen, is semi-stall in RU, at least the typical kind of semi-stall. So I decided to create one with our resident fat breaker, volcanion. Surprisingly enough, this team can play at quite a fast pace if needed, but can do REALLY well against slower teams.

The Team

:sv/volcanion:
Volcanion @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 120 Def / 252 SpA / 136 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Steam Eruption
- Body Press
- Roar

We of course, start with the wallbreaker of the team, volcanion. Volcanion can actually provide some useful defensive merits for the team, as its water immunity makes dealing with rain teams and suicune a lot easier. It can also usually take one big physical hit in a pinch, like tera flying gapdos brave bird or a mamoswine e-quake (yes, it can barely live a mamo e-quake as long as its not adamant, and even then that's a roll if its adamant), so it contributes a lot defensively. I'll go over the moveset. Usually volcanion invests in hp evs, but since we have body press, I decided to invest in defense. This means that flamethrower into body press always KO's cyclizar, 2 body presses have a great chance to ko hoodra and means that volcanion has a decent chance to 3hit ko chansey without hazards, or 2hit ko chansey with full hazards up. You can invest in HP if you want to in order to survive more hits, but I prefer a boosted body press. Steam eruption and flamethrower are great stab moves, with body press as mentioned doing well against the normal types of the tier and steels that are neutral to fire such as empoleon and hoodra. Roar is an interesting tech on volcanion, its not unheard of but you might expect taunt on here instead. Roar however is a very good tool on volcanion, as it means it can phaze out any physical setup sweeper that may prove an issue. It also makes the suicune matchup so much more dealable, as you can rack up hazard damage on it and remove its cm boosts. It also means against something like lefties umbreon or chansey, you can accrue spikes chip or stop a wish pass. Tera ghost is to completely wall chansey, which is invaluable, while also taking fighting moves that may ko it such as Gadpos CC.

:sv/quagsire:
Quagsire @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Toxic
- Earthquake
- Recover

What's a stall team without an unaware mon? In next comes quagsire. Honestly, the only thing I really have to explain is the reasoning why I have toxic spikes, but I'll do a quick rundown on what quagsire does anyways. Quagsire can take on a plethora of physical setup sweepers in the tier, such as Bisharp, Gyarados and Krookodile, due to Unaware. It can then use this opportunity to spread status or hazards. Toxic, Earthquake and Recover are standard, but the last moveslot is quite flexible. I went on this build Toxic Spikes which pairs great with Roar on Volcanion while helping a lot against more offensive builds. However, anything can realistically be last here. Whirlpool can trap annoying threats to the team, encore can heavily annoy defensive teams, counter can surprise pokemon that may think they can beat you such as trailblaze mamoswine and spikes can be used in order to use something else on chesnaught. Really, its up to whoever uses the team to choose the last moveslot. Tera Poison allows quagsire to stonewall pokemon such as Fezandipiti or Umbreon, while allowing it to take a toxic in stall mirrors. This especially works well with the 4 speed evs that mean you can always outspeed opposing quagsire.

:sv/chansey:
Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Seismic Toss
- Soft-Boiled
- Heal Bell

What's a stall team without a pink blob? Chansey is the main special wall of this team and a critical part of the team. It can pivot into any special attacker and just tank there hits easily. It can use this switch in to either get up rocks, click heal bell, recover or start doing consistent damage with seismic toss. Stealth rock, seismic toss and soft-boiled are standard, so they don't need much explanation. Heal bell is usually the fourth move on chansey, and it means that you can remove annoying status conditions from teammates which allows them to be a lot more aggresive in making progress against bulkier playstyles. Tera dark is the standard tera type on chansey unless you have multiple psychic type answers (a-muk+slowbro is the most common) in order to answer pokemon such as CM slowbro and Armarouge.

:sv/umbreon:
Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Inner Focus
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Wish
- Toxic
- Protect

Next up, we have the second special wall of the team, umbreon. Most stall teams in RU prefer muk alola as there dark type special wall, as it is a lot less passive compared to umbreon, but since we have volcanion on the team, passing wishes is incredibly valuable to keep it healthy. Umbreon is able to take on the ghost types that can thwart chansey, while also making sure that chansey doesn't get overloaded. Firstly, the item choice. I decided to go with Leftovers over Heavy Duty Boots because weezing galar is quite reliably at keeping off hazards and the extra HP from leftovers can help against certain pokemon like Specs Hoodra and NP horoark. The moveset for umbreon is pretty standard, toxic to cripple switchins, foul play to deal with boosted setup sweepers, wish and protect to receive your own wishes and pass them to teammates. Tera poison allows you to take toxic easily while also flipping your bug and fighting weaknesses.

:sv/weezing galar:
Weezing-Galar @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Strange Steam
- Pain Split
- Will-O-Wisp
- Defog

Next up, we needed some hazard removal. While talonflame was certainly an option I considered, weezing galar helps a lot more against krookodile and mamoswine, which have the potential to be very annoying. Rocky Helmet was the item of choice to punish pokemon such as Slither Wing and Gapdos for clicking u-turn or their stab options. 8 speed evs were initially for conkeldurr, but since that has now left you can prob do 252 defense with 4 special defense, but I decided to not change it. I decided to not make geezing faster as it admittingly needs all the bulk it can get to wall as much as possible. Strange steam is reliably stab that has a chance to make the opponent hate there life, pain split allows geezing to keep itself healthy over the course of the game and I chose it over rest because we have umbreon on the team to keep it heatlhy. Will-o-wisp can cripple physical attackers such as bisharp and gapdos, and defog removes hazards for the rest of the team. Geezing is quite reliable at removing hazards as only empoleon can reliably switch into it and either umbreon, volcanion or chansey completely wall it. Tera steel gives it a great defensive typing and allows it to wall bisharp and mamoswine easily.

:sv/chesnaught:
Chesnaught @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Bulletproof
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Body Press
- Knock Off
- Synthesis

Lastly, we have the spikes setter and knock off user for this team, chesnaught. Chesnaught is a great role compression mon on the team, allowing it to make a ton of progress. Rocky helmet means that alongside geezing, chesnaught can accrue a lot of passive damage and wear down the opposition quickly. Spikes means that chesnaught can always make progress and means that you can take them off quagsire, though if you want to keep them on quag one of spiky shield, leech seed or iron defense can be used. Body press can deal good damage to pokemon such as bisharp and hoodra, and knock off can remove items while also making sure ghost types don't wall it forever. Synthesis allows chesnaught to keep itself healthy across the battle. Tera ghost can act as an emergency spinblocker while also dealing with maushold quite nicely if they somehow manage to knock off both helmets.

Conclusion

Overall, I think this team is pretty good. It can deal well with ladder shenanigans, while also doing well against bulkier teams due to volcanion+tons of passive damage this team asserts. While stall in SV RU will always be annoying, I do think that it can work and this team shows it.

Fully dedicated stall teams in RU can definitely be tricky to build, having to account for so many offensive powerhouses in the tier that can threaten to outmuscle you, so using a Volcanion semistall approach seems reasonable enough. I think this team checks all of the standard boxes you'd want to cover, though I would say Chansey and Volcanion could probably opt to run slightly different movesets; Chansey doesn't quite need to fit the cleric role here since you've got solid status absorbers (including itself), so something like Calm Mind > Heal Bell to prevent threats like Armarouge and Hisuian Zoroark from breaking through you seems solid. Similarly, Volcanion could opt to use Taunt > Roar; while phazing out opposing Suicune is impactful like you mentioned, having CM on Chansey to go alongside WishTect Umbreon makes the matchup far less concerning (on top of Suicune usage falling down from what I've seen in the tier). This team is solid enough and will definitely see usage in the ongoing RU Seasonal, great work.
