This week's Next Best Thing is...
Week 29: Politoed
After Pelipper dropped down to UU, Politoed lost its primary niche as a Rain setter. This week, I'd like you all to try to come up with a niche for it in the tier!
Banned Sets (click-me)
You have until Wednesday, July 21 at 11:59 pm EDT (GMT -4) to submit your set!
Politoed @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 120 SpD / 124 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Whirlpool
- Perish Song
- Protect
- Rest
Toed may have become shit in its role as a rain setter after Pelipper dropped, but it can still perform a PerishPool role semi-decently. Switch into Kingdra or Barra mindlessly trying to spam its STABs, proceed to click Whirlpool, click Perish Song & stall whatever poor sap you’ve trapped. Speed is to outrun speedless Kommo-o. There’s not much to say about this, but I do have one final piece of advice for all of you: use Azu lol
Politoed @ Assault Vest
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 96 HP / 160 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Earthquake
- Liquidation
- Ice Beam / Blizzard
- Power-Up Punch
I originally was about to do curse, but when i saw power-up punch, I knew curse was garbage. The HP and SpDef EV's let it live a choice specs regieleki Thunderbolt with no Electric Terrain active, it also lives two Thunderbolts from Standard Nidoking. The Attack EV's lets it kill Regieleki with two Liquidation's if your lazy to predict around Ground immunes. This pokemon works great as a lead, as you can discourage other standard leads with its typing and set up with Power-Up Punch.
This Politoed uses the combination of Toxic + Whirlpool to trap the opponent's threat in order to KO it after some turns.
Seismic Toss is a solid source of damage that speeds up a lot the process.
Rest is for longevity and to get rid of detrimental status.
Water Absorb is unfortunately not available with this, but with Drizzle and high bulk you can naturally come in on lots of things to set up either a free Amnesia or Curse while your opp switches out. You just need a couple of these, then rest up, and go win. Just have lots of teammate support to take out other water absorb mons like Mantine and Seismitoad before going hamburger.
Politoed @ Leftovers
Ability: Drizzle / Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Whirlpool
- Hypnosis
- Toxic
(Not the most creative, but I don't know what else I am meant to do with Politoed) This Politoed is supposed to come into weaker or resisted special attackers and provide at least minor annoyance to the opposing team by spreading status on anything that switches in and chipping everything down a bit. The ability is team dependent, and special defense investment is preferred to take advantage of Politoed's naturally higher stats.
It can go a specs set to differ from pelliper as a defensive setter as with its base 90 special attack with a modest nature to threaten the metagame with specs booster weather balls and ice beam as coverage for tang and amoonguss
