Thursday February 25*Initial drafts for both Curse and Trapper sets for UU*
http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/umbreon
[Overview]

While it may underwhelming in the OU environment, it is in the UU environment where Umbreon's takents truly shine. It is capable of becaming a powerful tank that is difficult to take down, or it can opt for a more defensive set that is more at eam player. It's ability, Synchronize can discourage many pokemon from using status on Umbreon as they risk being crippled by status themselves. If you need a defensive dark type that can also be used offensively, Umbreon is the way to go.

[SET]
name: Curse
move 1: Curse
move 2: Payback
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Baton Pass / Yawn / Moonlight
item: Leftovers
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Hp / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
ivs: 0 Spe
[Set comments]

Boasting high defenses on both ends of the spectrum, Umbreon makes for a great curse user. Curse increases Umbreon's pitiful attack to powerful levels and manages boosts it's already high defense at the same time.
Payback provides Umbreon with a powerful dark STAB attack and considering the nature of this set, Umbreon is almost always moving last. Sucker Punch is a strong priority move that is further boosted by STAB, and has the potential has the potential to OHKO some of the metagames faster threats with a decent amount of curses. Finally, Baton Pass is used to pass of Umbreon's curses when it is in a situation where it is forced to switch. You can also perform a "Dry Pass" and scout ahead for potential counters. Yawn can be used to threaten counters with sleep, and Moonlight can be used for reliable healing and general longevity. Umbreon can switch in relatively easily due to his immunity to psychic and can easily force out frail sweepers such as Alakazam and Mismagius due to it's powerful sucker punch move, giving him prime time to set up curses.

[Additional Comments]

Max attack is needed to deal as much damage as possible, as often times you may find yourself in a situation where you cannot set up, and you need to deal as much damage as possible at any given time. Max Hp provides Umbreon longevity and can difficult to take down when taking it's high defenses into account. A more defensively natured spread of 252 Hp / 200 Atk / 56 SpD can be considered, be wary that more curses would need to be performed for optimal damage.

Bulky steel types such as Steelix and Registeel manage to give this set some trouble so powerful fire types such as Blaziken or Moltres can be a valued teamates. Moltres especially, who has literally nothing to fear from most steel types. Milotic, a notable haze user can be quite effectively neuter this set greatly. Grass types such as Venusaur and Luddicolo can easily deal with Milotic. Bulky poison types such as Weezing are great partners to Umbreon, as they resist both of Umbreon's weaknesses. Spiritomb is also an excellent choice as well. Both pokemon can cripple Umbreon's counters with Will-o-wisps.

Like most pokemon, Umbreon appreciates entry hazards, as they can help secure potential OHKO's and 2HKO's. Umbreon itself causes a lot of switches, and entry hazards can capatilize on that and wear down their team with continual switches. You may want to consider pairing Umbreon up with slow bulky sweepers who can benefit from multiple curses. Hitmontop is fine candidate as it has the potential to devaste teams with his powerful priority moves.

Umbreon can be a prime target for status moves, so avoiding them is especially importand. Both burn and toxic are detrimental to Umbreon's sucess, and thus Umbreon appreciates status absorbers in general. Venusaur makes a fine choice here, as it has the added bonus of also resisting fighting moves. Taunt users are troublesome as they stop it from setting up and/or passing off curses.

[SET]
name: Trap Passer
move 1: Mean Look
move 2: Baton Pass
move 3: Wish
move 4: Taunt
item: Leftovers / Chople Berry
nature: Careful
evs: 252 Hp / 156 Def / 100 SpD
[Set Comments]

This set takes advantage of Umbreon's unique Mean Look and Baton Pass combo. It has the potential of devastating teams when pulled off correctly. Executing this set is fairly simple. Mean look to trap the opponent, and then Baton pass to an appropriate counter. If performed correctly, you can guarantee at least one of their pokemon being KOed (assuming they do not use Shed Shell) Umbreon can also provide a sweeper some time to freely set up if Mean look is used correctly on a pokemon that cannot harm the sweeper. Wish passing is an effective stragedy as it provides your team effective healing and longetitivity and Umbreon itself appreciates the extra Hp to do it's job. Finally, Taunt is absolutely neccesary to stop phazers and other taunt users from messing up Umbreon's plans. Taunt users are an immediate threat because when taunted Umbreon is essentially dead weight.

[Additional Comments]

Defenses are maximized to allow Umbreon to perform it's job efficiently. Speed EV's are not neccesary, as Umbreon is not outspeeding any notable taunt users in UU. The given EV's allow Umbreon to survive some of the strongest attacks in UU, including Megahorn from Standard Rhyperior, and an unboosted Superpower from Blaziken.

Umbreon is completely dependent on it's team, so a wide variety of pokemon with excellent coverage is neccesary in dealing with most of UU. Sweepers can also be effectively set up with Umbreon's help. Moltres, who has a wide coverage and can easily KO most of UU under the right conditions makes a fine candidate to pass Mean Look. Feraligatr, Mismagius and other stat boosters appreciate the time of provided by Mean look to set up.

Strong Fighting and Bug types, and taunt users should be immediately removed to allow Umbreon the space it needs to do it's job. It is recommended to carry a powerful ghost type to deal with the afformentioned threats. It is best not to overestimate Umbreon's defenses, as while impressive, they do not make Umbreon invincible. A misplay can leave you crippled or KOed Umbreon.

[Team Options]

Umbreon definetely appreciates the support given to it by Weezing, as it resists both of it's weaknesses, and can cripple Umbreon's counters with will-o-wisp. Spiritomb also makes a fine teamate, as his immunity to fighting and resitance to bug is quite handy. Spiritomb has the added bonus of taking out potent taunt users such as Ambipom and Mismagius with great ease.

The firepower (no pun intended) received by Moltres and Blaziken can effectively take down most of Umbreon's still counters. Blaziken can use the time given to it by the trap passer set to effectively setting up, and Moltres can efficiently dispatch most of the UU metagame.

Venusaur and Luddicolo are also excellent teamates, as they stop Milotic from destroying Umbreon's stat gains from curse.
[Optional Changes]

Umbreon does not have many options as it's movepool is relatively scarce. Tickle/Fake Tears/Screech is an option to weaken potential counters on the switch in, while Confuse ray can be midly annoying for your opponent to deal with. Pursuit may be used to catch fleeting pokemon.

[Counters]

Umbreon has difficulty dealing with Fighting and Bug types. Hitmontop, Harriyama and other fighting types can give Umbreon some trouble. Umbreon also has difficulty dealing with Scyther, who can deal hefty damage with STAB bug moves.Toxicroak is a great counter as well, as he mostly has nothing to fear from Umbreon and dispatch easily with powerful fighting attacks.

Steels are a major thorn in Umbreon's side as they resist most it's main attacks and soundly wall it.
Taunt users can cause massive problems as they immediately hinders it's options to the point of completely shutting down the Trap passer set.
