Draft Tornadus-Therian

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Late round 1 onwards

**Price Range**: 17 points

**Overview**: Tornadus-T is a superb Pokemon that offers a lot to a team, including a high Speed tier, excellent longevity thanks to Regenerator, and a wide movepool that boasts supportive and offensive options alike. This allows it to perform as an offensive or defensive threat depending on what its team requires. Its powerful coverage options and excellent Flying-type STAB moves also make it a great candidate as a Z-Captain. This can also make up for the fact that many of Tornadus-T's preferred offensive moves are inaccurate, which can otherwise make it frustrating to use. Additionally, being weak to Stealth Rock cuts into the effectiveness of Regenerator, requiring either it or its teammates to provide entry hazard support in order to not be worn down too quickly.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Bulky Pivot**: Tornadus-T's excellent Speed tier and decent defensive profile make it a great bulky pivot. U-turn pairs perfectly with Regenerator, allowing it to generate momentum while keeping itself healthy for the rest of the battle. A plethora of support options such as Defog and Knock Off can be used to provide more ways to support its team. This set has great flexibility with EVs and item choices, allowing Tornadus-T to be fast, physically or specially defensive, or even more offensive to spread damage more reliably for its team to take advantage of.

**Offensive**: Offensive sets shy away from supporting teammates to instead deal as much damage as possible, making great use of Tornadus-T's fantastic Speed stat to get the jump on much of the metagame. It also boasts naturally great coverage with STAB Flying-type moves as well as a deep offensive movepool. Tornadus-T makes great use with Z-Crystals on this set, allowing it to bypass the inaccuracy of its moves and bypass walls that may otherwise force it out. However, Life Orb can also be considered instead to give a smaller boost to all of its moves.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Hurricane, Air Slash, Acrobatics

**Setup Moves**: Bulk Up

**Utility Moves**: Defog, Knock Off, U-turn, Taunt, Toxic, Brick Break

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, Heat Wave, Icy Wind, Psychic, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Iron Tail, Superpower, Crunch, Foul Play

Niche Moves
========
**Hidden Power**: Hidden Power is a weak move that helps to patch up gaps in Tornadus-T's coverage, allowing it to hit Pokemon it otherwise might struggle with, most notably those that bear a 4x weakness.

**Tailwind**: Tornadus-T can use its excellent Speed to reliably set Tailwind for its teammates to use either right before being knocked out or throughout a game by pivoting to teammates safely and keeping itself healthy for further use.

**Agility**: Agility is an alternative to Tailwind that buffs Tornadus-T directly. With an already high Speed stat, it is almost impossible for foes to revenge kill after a boost and can become a potential late-game sweeper. It can also be accentuated with a Z-Crystal, allowing it to muscle past a Pokemon that could otherwise tank a hit and stop it.

Common Items
========
**Rocky Helmet**: Rocky Helmet allows Tornadus-T to punish the many physical attacks aimed at it and its team. Even if it ends up being removed through Knock Off, it makes Tornadus-T a good switch-in to future uses of Knock Off and thus can help prevent item loss for the rest of its team.

**Z-Crystals**: Tornadus-T should always be considered being made a Z-Captain, as it makes fantastic use of a wide range of Z-Crystals thanks to its access to high-Base Power moves that boast wide coverage, allowing it to muscle past a large variety of Pokemon. Flyinium Z is the prime choice, but other ones such as Fightinium Z and Firium Z can also be considered to beat Flying-resistant foes.

**Life Orb**: Life Orb aims to give Tornadus-T a noticeable boost to all of its moves. Although it has a recoil-inducing effect, this can be healed off through Regenerator, allowing it to fire off powerful moves with little drawback. One must be careful if Stealth Rock is on the field, however, as too much passive damage building up alongside Life Orb recoil can compromise Tornadus-T's longevity.

**Leftovers**: Leftovers provides additional passive healing while Tornadus-T is on the field. This can help to offset some of the damage taken from switching into Stealth Rock, especially if it is tasked with removing them in the first place.

**Assault Vest**: With naturally good offensive stats and the ability to keep itself healthy through Regenerator, Tornadus-T makes for an excellent user of Assault Vest, allowing it to tank special attacks throughout the course of a game. Knock Off and U-turn are compatible with this set, allowing it to provide support even when locked out of using status moves. This restriction means Tornadus-T needs to rely on teammates to clear the field of Stealth Rock instead.

Niche Items
========
**Resistance Berries**: Thanks to its excellent longevity, Tornadus-T may find itself targeted for super effective damage in order to knock it out. Resistance Berries make for a good choice to offset this damage and allow it extra turns to continue supporting its team.

**Pinch Berries**: Pinch Berries, such as the Mago Berry, are incredibly powerful items that Tornadus-T makes great use of, allowing it to absorb a powerful attack and remain healthy afterwards. This lessens the need to switch out afterwards to activate Regenerator, allowing it to retaliate.

**Choice Specs**: Choice Specs relies on how spammable Flying-type STAB attacks are due to their amazing neutral coverage, meaning Tornadus-T can sometimes roll over entire teams by only using Hurricane. This eases the prediction-heavy nature of this set, preventing it from potentially being locked into unfavorable moves.

Draft Strategy
========
Tornadus-T should be one of the first Pokemon you draft. Its expansive toolkit and balanced stat spread make it a very customizable Pokemon that is able to fit on a variety of team styles such as balance, hyper offense, and bulky offense. As such, there are many different kinds of teammates that are able to be paired with Tornadus-T, which are most often supported by it, but they can sometimes enable it as well.

**Entry Hazard Support**: Tornadus-T forces a lot of switches due to its offensive pressure and fantastic Speed stat that allows it to get the jump on many Pokemon. As such, entry hazard setters such as Uxie and Klefki can provide extra chip damage to force onto foes through repeated switches. To prevent the need for Tornadus-T to remove its own hazards with Defog, it also appreciates Rapid Spin support from Pokemon like Excadrill.

**Entry Hazard-weak Teammates**: As a premier user of Defog, Tornadus-T is able to create ideal conditions for Pokemon that are otherwise heavily damaged by entry hazards. Major offensive threats such as both Mega Charizard formes, Victini, and Kyurem-B become incredibly dangerous when they are not forced to take extra damage from hazards.

**Wallbreakers**: While offensive sets are able to spread good damage, Tornadus-T can sometimes still be wanting for power, so it appreciates being paired with stronger wallbreakers that can break past bulky Pokemon that can take its attacks. Wallbreakers such as Mega Mawile, Latios, and Mega Medicham boast huge damage output that can break foes that wall it reliably.

**Alternate Regenerator Pokemon**: Tornadus-T is able to form powerful cores with other Pokemon that have access to Regenerator so that they can passively keep themselves healthy all game while beating each others' counters and checks. Pokemon such as Slowking, Tangrowth, and Amoonguss are excellent choices for forming seemingly unbreakable Regenerator cores.

Checks and Counters
========
**Electric-types**: Tornadus-T is almost completely helpless against Electric-type Pokemon, which easily switch into its Flying-type attacks, fear little from its coverage moves, and can strike back with the momentum-gaining Volt Switch. Pokemon such as Zapdos, Rotom-W, and Tapu Koko threaten it greatly as a result.

**Stealth Rock**: While Tornadus-T is a great user of Defog, Stealth Rock is still a source of great irritation, especially if it doesn't get a chance to remove them. Since it is regularly tasked with tanking hits for its team, they cut into its longevity significantly, as it cannot regenerate as much health back. As a result, Stealth Rock users such as Landorus-T, Garchomp and Necrozma serve to make its life more difficult.

**Bulky Walls**: Even with damage-boosting items, Tornadus-T can find itself struggling to break though dedicated bulky walls that can tank anything it uses, especially since it has limited setup moves and cannot always fit the coverage it needs to hit everything. Bulky Pokemon such as Celesteela, Toxapex, and Snorlax have the bulk and typing to repeatedly take hits from Tornadus-T.

**Status**: Tornadus-T is affected by all types of status effects, especially paralysis and poison, which can cut its impressive Speed stat and limit its longevity, respectively. Dedicated status spreaders such as Thundurus, Mew, and Gliscor can cripple it and make itself more vulnerable to the opposing team.

Common Roles
========
**Bulky Pivot**: Tornadus-Ts excellent Speed tier and decent defensive profile make it a great candidate for a Bulky Pivot. U-turn pairs perfectly with Regenerator, allowing Tornadus-T to generate momentum whilst keeping itself healthy for the rest of the battle. A plethora of support options such as Defog and Knock Off can be used to provide more ways to support its team. This set has great flexibility with EV and item choices, allowing Tornadus-T to be fast, physically or specially defensive, or even more offensive to spread damage more reliably for its team to take advantage of.

**Offensive**: This set shys away from supporting its team to instead deal as much damage as possible, making great use of Tornadus-Ts fantastic Speed stat to get the jump on much of the metagame. It also boasts naturally great coverage with STAB Flying-type moves as well as a deep offensive movepool. Life Orb is the premier item choice, whose recoil effect is healed off through Regenerator, however a Z-Crystal can also be considered in order to remove specific targets more reliably or deal massive damage without having to worry about inaccuracy. I would slightly reword this to make It more clear that Tornadus is a great Z user but life orb can often be used instead of it.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Hurricane, Air Slash, Acrobatics

**Setup Moves**: Bulk Up

**Utility Moves**: Defog, Knock Off, U-turn, Taunt, Toxic

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, Heat Wave, Hidden Power, Icy Wind, Psychic, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Iron Tail, Superpower, Crunch, Foul Play I would move Hidden Power to Niche since Tornadus-T often has a stronger coverage option in its movepool.

Niche Moves
========
**Tailwind**: Tornadus-T can use its excellent Speed to reliably set Tailwind for its teammates to use, either right before being knocked out or throughout a game, where it can continuously pivot into teammates safely and keep itself healthy for further use.

**Rain Dance / Sunny Day**: Once again, Tornadus-T can use its Speed stat to setup rain or sun for it or its teammates to use, fueling potentially dangerous weather teams. Not using an automatic setter can catch opponents off guard. Rain notably allows Tornadus-T to freely spam Hurricane without having to worry about it missing. With It not having Weather Ball this gen i think Sunny day can be removed since sun teams in general are not really present in the meta. On rain teams Tornadus is rarely used as a setter but instead as a mon that benefits from It so im leaning towards removing It as well.

**Brick Break**: A weak alternative to its more stronger Fighting-type coverage, Brick Break has the benefit of breaking screens, preventing opponents from tanking hits and potentially setting up safely.

Agility may be worth a mention as It lets Tornadus-T clean regardless of scarfers and with its access to Z moves It can get away with a one time nuke.

Common Items
========
**Rocky Helmet**: Rocky Helmet allows Tornadus-T to punish the many physical attacks aimed at it and its team. Even if the item ends up being removed through Knock Off, it makes Tornadus-T a good switch to the move thereafter and thus can help prevent item loss for the rest of its team.

**Life Orb / Z-Crystals**: These items aim to give Tornadus-T a noticeable boost to its power. Offensive sets love the damage boost Life Orb provides to all moves, with the damaging recoil being healed off through Regenerator, allowing Tornadus-T to fire off powerful moves without drawback. Meanwhile, Z-Crystals provide a one-time fully accurate move that's powered up even more, granting Tornadus-T even more effective wallbreaking power. These should be split, they offer different benefits in different roles.

**Leftovers**: Leftovers provides additional passive healing while Tornadus-T is on the field. This can help to offset the damage taken from switching into rocks as Tornadus-T often does, especially if it is tasked with removing them in the first place.

Add the pinch berries, as its the case with most pivots this gen Tornadus-T makes great use of them.

Niche Items
========
This restriction means Tornadus-T will need to rely on teammates to clear the field of Stealth Rock for it and prevent it from being worn down. Move this to common.

**Resistance Berries**: Thanks to its excellent longevity, Tornadus-T may find itself targeted for Super Effective damage in order to knock it out. Resistance Berries make for a good choice to offset this damage and allow Tornadus-T extra turns to continue supporting its team.

**Damp / Heat Rock**: These items should be used only on sets with the weather setting moves Rain Dance or Sunny Day, allowing Tornadus-T to provide extended manual setup for either it or its team to utilize. Needs to be removed If the weather moves are removed.

Add Choice Specs, even in this meta Flying is still a decently spammable stab so specs does have its matchups.

Major offensive threats such as both Mega Charizards, Volcarona and Kyurem-Black become incredibly dangerous when they are not forced to take extra damage from hazards. Volcarona is not drafted enough to be worth the mention, replace It with Victini.

Bulky Pokemon such as Celesteela, Toxapex and Sylveon have the bulk and typing to repeatedly take hits from Tornadus-T, though it still has the capacity to lure these Pokemon and knock them out with Z-Moves. Replace Sylveon with something like Snorlax that gets drafted more often.

**Status**: Tornadus-T is affected by all types of status, especially paralysis and poison, which can cut its impressive Speed stat and limit its longevity respectively. Dedicated status spreaders such as Thundurus-I, Mew and Gliscor can cripple Tornadus-T and make itself more vulnerable to the opposing team.

Knock Off and U-turn are compatible with this set, allowing it to provide support even when locked out of using status moves. This restriction means Tornadus-T will need needs to rely on teammates to clear the field of Stealth Rock for it and prevent it from being worn down instead.

Niche Items
========
**Resistance Berries**: Thanks to its excellent longevity, Tornadus-T may find itself targeted for super effective damage in order to knock it out. Resistance Berries make for a good choice to offset this damage and allow Tornadus-T it extra turns to continue supporting its team.

**Pinch Berries**: Pinch Berries, such as the Mago Berry, are incredibly powerful items which that Tornadus-T makes great use of, allowing it to absorb a powerful attack and remain healthy afterwards. This lessens the need to switch out afterwards to activate Regenerator, allowing it to retaliate.

**Choice Specs**: Choice Specs offers the most powerful boost to Tornadus-T's attacks outside of the one time use Z-Crystals. This item relies on how spammable Flying-type STAB attacks are due to their amazing neutral coverage, meaning Tornadus-T can sometimes roll over entire teams by only clicking using Hurricane. This eases the prediction heavy prediction-heavy nature of this set, preventing it from potentially being locked into unfavorable moves.

Draft Strategy
========
Tornadus-T will should be one of the first Pokemon you draft. Its expansive toolkit and balanced stat spread make it a very customizeable customizable Pokemon that is able to fit on a variety of team styles (RC) such as balance, hyper offense, (AC) and or bulky offense. As such, there are many different kinds of teammates that are able to be paired with Tornadus-T, which are most often being supported by it, but they can sometimes enabling enable it as well.

**Entry Hazard Support**: Tornadus-T forces a lot of switches due to its offensive pressure and fantastic Speed stat that allows it to get the jump on many Pokemon. As such, entry hazard setters such as Uxie and Klefki can provide extra chip damage to force onto the opponent foes through repeated switches. To prevent the need for Tornadus-T to Defog away remove its own hazards with Defog, it also appreciates Rapid Spin support from Pokemon like Excadrill (RC) which also help to remove Stealth Rock for Tornadus-T. thats implied

**Hazard WeakEntry Hazard-weak Teammates**: As a premier user of Defog, Tornadus-T is able to create ideal conditions for Pokemon that are otherwise heavily damaged by entry hazards. Major offensive threats such as both Mega Charizards Charizard formes, Victini, (AC) and Kyurem-Black Kyurem-B become incredibly dangerous when they are not forced to take extra damage from hazards.

**Wallbreakers**: While offensive sets are able to spread good damage, Tornadus-T can sometimes still be wanting for power, and thus so it appreciates being paired with stronger wallbreakers that can break past bulky Pokemon that can take its attacks. Wallbreakers such as Mega Mawile, Latios, (AC) and Mega Medicham boast huge damage output that can break walls reliably for Tornadus-T foes that wall it reliably.

**Alternate Regenerator Pokemon**: Tornadus-T is able to form powerful cores with other Pokemon that have access to Regenerator (RC) where so that they can passively keep themselves healthy all game whilst while beating each others' (apostrophe) counters and checks. Pokemon such as Slowking, Tangrowth, (AC) and Amoonguss are excellent choices for forming seemingly unbreakable Regenerator cores.

Checks and Counters
========
**Electric-types**: Tornadus-T is almost completely helpless against Electric-type Pokemon, who are able to which easily switch into its Flying-type attacks, fear little from its coverage moves, (AC) and can strike back with the momentum gaining momentum-gaining Volt Switch. Pokemon such as Zapdos, Rotom-Wash Rotom-W, (AC) and Tapu Koko threaten Tornadus-T it greatly as a result.

**Stealth Rock**: While it Tornadus-T is a great user of Defog, Stealth Rock is still a source of great irritation, especially if it doesn't get a chance to remove them. Since Tornadus-T it is regularly tasked with tanking hits for its team, they cut into its longevity significantly, (AC) as it cannot regenerate as much health back. As a result, Stealth Rock users such as Landorus-T, Garchomp and Necrozma serve to make its life more difficult.

**Bulky Walls**: Even with boosting damage-boosting items, Tornadus-T can find itself struggling to break though dedicated bulky walls that can tank anything Tornadus-T can throw at it it uses, especially since Tornadus-T it has limited setup moves and cannot always fit the coverage it needs to hit everything. Bulky Pokemon such as Celesteela, Toxapex, (AC) and Snorlax have the bulk and typing to repeatedly take hits from Tornadus-T (RC) though it still has the capacity to lure these Pokemon and knock them out with Z-Moves.

**Status**: Tornadus-T is affected by all types of status effects, especially paralysis and poison, which can cut its impressive Speed stat and limit its longevity, (AC) respectively. Dedicated status spreaders such as Thundurus-I Thundurus, Mew, (AC) and Gliscor can cripple Tornadus-T it and make itself more vulnerable to the opposing team.
