Toriko (spoilers)

Toriko is a manga series that's been going on since 2008. Toriko is the titular main character, and is a Gourmet Hunter (or Bishokuya), an individual that specializes in acquiring and discovering new ingredients and animals. The manga centers around food, in a world where human society basically revolves around gourmet food and drink. Wild creatures are ranked by something called a capture level - in general, the higher capture level a creature is, the harder it is to kill, but the tastier it is.

One thing that Toriko does amazingly is scale, better than any manga out there. To put things into perspective, a creature with a capture level of 1 requires several infantrymen equipped with assault rifles to take down. A creature with a capture level of 8 can destroy a multibillion dollar tank in seconds. The manga runs on a power curve that's more drastic than Dragon Ball Z, with even more ridiculous fights. Characters have signature abilities that you'll come to learn, while the main protagonists of the manga are dwarfed by the most powerful individuals that are sided with either bad or good.

It's really good at balancing awesome fight scenes with humor. Most mangas follow up a fight sequence with filler chapters that explain backstory - Toriko does this too, but usually with chapters that feature awesome foods that make you hungry as all hell. Most importantly, in my opinion, the manga is consistent. Whereas many have complained with drops in quality in Bleach, Fairy Tail, One Piece, etc; Toriko is consistently excellent week after week. It's the chapter I look forward to reading most every Wednesday. Any other fans here?

i really enjoy it but this current arc has become pretty ass. they just took down the four beast which is the most monumental task and should have been the last thing that happens in terms of fighting before venturing into the gourmet world. instead they start the cooking tournament, which is great, and introduce all these characters in big flashy spreads over many chapters and bam, theyre all pretty much dead now after the bishoukai attacks and you have this huge fight again. its all too much too soon.

i was scared this thread was dead but we have at least one reader here so *applause*

i kinda agree that there's a lot going on, but it seems fast-paced to me and i'd rather be met with a ton of action than have uneventful fillers (which seem to be the trend in both naruto and bleach at the moment)

i also think that the four beast serves as a great relative frame of power to the bishoukai - they took down the four beast and its servants without a HUGE amount of difficulty, but the fights seem much more even against the bishoukai.

I'm also a big fan of the Toriko manga, although I've only read what's been released officially by Viz and I think even there I still need to get the last couple volumes. The last chapter I've read is 79, where there's a race to the Gourmet Showcase in Ice Hell, and the Gourmet Corp. have just shown up to fight. How far behind am I to you guys?

My god, some of these recent speeches make me wanna hurl. Koko's "Cooks are treasure" of the last chapter was one of the corniest/most ridiculous yet. ugh...

edit: Also, no way Toriko is more consistent than One Piece. Also, One Piece is a better manga throughout. Toriko is fun, but it's never been as epic or emotionally moving to me as One Piece.

Idk, it's personal taste really because I've never been able to get that into One Piece except for the Impel Down arc. Some of the speeches are pretty corny, though.

God, I just realized my last post said NOTHING positive about Toriko-- which is a problem because Toriko IS a very good series.

My favorite arc was probably the the Food Honor arc! One of the most most interest and well written training-arcs I ever read (training arcs is one thing OP kinda sucks at).

Though I am slightly saddened that its effects were ultimately barely included into the story except to increase the "ren" of Toriko's kugi-punch to ridiculous levels. Food Honor was such a great arc-- it should have done something fundamentally altering to Toriko's fighting style like Gears/Haki did for Luffy. Calling it a 360 Kugi Punch instead of a 36 Kugi Punch is not what we call a character upgrade. Also I got annoyed that Koko and Sunny just got food honor off screen...but I guess it's no different than Zoro/Sanji getting Haki, so whatever.

Anyway, probably the most awesome and unique thing about Toriko is the food. Some of it blows my mind (especially in the anime).

Also I love all the corny puns from the anime openings.

"Someone once said... there was an island with sand of rice grains, salted by the ocean, where you could eat all the rice balls (Musubi, pronounced Mu-Su-Bee) you desire... MusuBEACH..."

lol

"Someone once said, overflowing and sizzling with tasty sauce, a dessert (Sabaku) of fried noodles (Yakisoba), the dessert named Yakisobaku~"

lol

"Someone once said, in a clear mountain stream, there live rice patty kilifish (Medaka) brimming with salty and meaty eggs that taste like salted soy beans (Edamame), there live the Edamamedaka~"

I love dajare (these types of Japanese word jokes).

Right now my girlfriend would be saying "Samu' " It's really "Samui!" (means cold, but also means "lame"/"corny")

That's what makes it hilarious though...

More:
"There is a peninsula (hantou) made of fried rice (chahan), the peninsula Chahantou."

"There is a giant Pumpkin brimming with a sweet cream like pudding, the Pumpudding!"

"A towering mountan (san) of bread like a croissant, the Crois-San!"

"Someone once said, there was an island (tou) where in the morning, the rivers and waterfalls mysteriously transform into creamy yogurt (yogaruto), the island YOGARUTOU."

"Someone once said, there is a magma pool bubbling with Macaroni and Gratan... MAGUMACARONI GURATAN!"

"Someone once said, there are pastures full of cows (nyuu) who sweat Barbecue (baabekyu) sauce and whose meat is entrenched with barbecue-- there are herds of BAABENYUU!"

wow...

How about making our own??

「だれかが言った、甘味のフワフワな、まるでマシュマロのようば肉を持つキノコ、マシュマルームがあるとっ!」
"Someone once said, that sweet and fluffy, there is a mushroom almost like a marshmallow, the MASHUMAROOM!"

「だれかが言った、秘密の森の中に、肉のような樹皮を持つ木があると、ステー木があると!」
"Someone once said, in a secrete forest, that there was a tree (ki) with bark like meat, there was the STEAKI!"

If it were up to me Toriko would be part of the "Big Three" because dammit you can't even argue Bleach > Toriko. Lighthearted, food, come on people it's awesome.

I agree with this arc being "whatever" and I would've preferred starting Gourmet World but at least we can see power from so other characters, it can be interesting. Setsuno vs Chiyo is gonna be weird as hell though, whats with this series and making the old women all freaky?

I started reading today because of this thread, and I rather enjoy it. I like the ridiculous over the top strength and the even more ridiculous over the top strength, but also the fact that it gives that HunterXHunter feel, but goes in the direction HxH doesn't. Like you see Gon's dad on top of a beast on top of something even bigger, but HxH really doesn't do much more with creatures, whereas this does. I will be following this once I catch up.

Oh yeah, forgot this complaint:

TOO MANY DUMB UNIMPORTANT CHARACTER INTRODUCTIONS

characters need to be classily woven into the story (like in One Piece), not thrown out in a long-ass-chain of cameo intros.

But yeah, Toriko >>>>>>>>>> Bleach

Starting this, anyone know where to find good translations for the early chapters? Sarenji told me my best bet is kissmanga and that I should tough it out until the quality improves, which is fine, but just thought I'd get a second opinion.

Mangahere is my go-to for just about everything. It's got every chapter in great quality.

EDIT: the order of the chapters is a little weird though which is a minor inconvenience

I might want to get into this as well. Is megasphere good with having the whole series in a good quality English translation?

Also is this an anime too?

okay so elg is even more of a monster than sani

they basically came out and said that buranchi is about as powerful as eneru from one piece and that fight was just

holy
