Toriko is a manga series that's been going on since 2008. Toriko is the titular main character, and is a Gourmet Hunter (or Bishokuya), an individual that specializes in acquiring and discovering new ingredients and animals. The manga centers around food, in a world where human society basically revolves around gourmet food and drink. Wild creatures are ranked by something called a capture level - in general, the higher capture level a creature is, the harder it is to kill, but the tastier it is.
One thing that Toriko does amazingly is scale, better than any manga out there. To put things into perspective, a creature with a capture level of 1 requires several infantrymen equipped with assault rifles to take down. A creature with a capture level of 8 can destroy a multibillion dollar tank in seconds. The manga runs on a power curve that's more drastic than Dragon Ball Z, with even more ridiculous fights. Characters have signature abilities that you'll come to learn, while the main protagonists of the manga are dwarfed by the most powerful individuals that are sided with either bad or good.
It's really good at balancing awesome fight scenes with humor. Most mangas follow up a fight sequence with filler chapters that explain backstory - Toriko does this too, but usually with chapters that feature awesome foods that make you hungry as all hell. Most importantly, in my opinion, the manga is consistent. Whereas many have complained with drops in quality in Bleach, Fairy Tail, One Piece, etc; Toriko is consistently excellent week after week. It's the chapter I look forward to reading most every Wednesday. Any other fans here?
