THE NINETIES: power hour playlist

every year, me and my bros get together on new years and listen to some rad tuneskies; a few people ever year are chosen to bring a playlist representing a decade (it just happened one year so dont ask me why), so im trying to make a play list of kickin 90s music for said new years party when it happens

rules:
-has to be from the 90s, as in released between january 1, 1990 to december 31, 1999
-play list has to be between 1:00:00 and 1:00:59

kinda rules:
-try to stay away from what was really popular if possible
-nobody really likes metal too much but i mean we can make exceptions

not really rules:
-most people there like DEEP INDIE music so keeping to that for the most part would be beneficial in my playlist getting picked (i can win MONEY CASH PRISES I LOVE IT)

what i have so far:
the dismemberment plan - what do you want me to say? [4:18]
the aquabats - cat with two heads [3:00]
built to spill - i wouldnt hurt a fly [6:15]
the flaming lips - psychiatric exploration of the fetus with needles [3:27]
beck - sissyneck [3:52]
the smashing pumpkins - take me down [2:52]
the beta band - the house song [7:14]
modest mouse - cowboy dan [6:16]
the eels - electric shock blues [2:29]
my bloody valentine - when you sleep [4:11]
the breeders - do you love me now? [3:01]
weezer - no other one [3:01]
pavement - conduit for sale! [2:51]
olivia tremor control - i'm not feeling human [2:17]
neutral milk hotel - king of carrot flowers part 1/part 2 & 3 [5:06]
total play time - 1:00:10

i know you guy cant really predict what my friends like since i havent given you much info on it but it seems to me that some of the musical taste of regulars here syncs up somewhat with that of what my friends like so input would be appreciated!

The song choices you have there are good, but I dunno, I'd kinda be wanting less obvious band choices..

Like, I'd kinda want things that people would hear and go "hey yeah, I remember that". Which means it has to be something they dont really listen to normally..

That might kinda mean music that is more popular than you were hoping for but I'll think about it a bit.. Like the good examples I can come up with are local bands from the 90s. Ones that you heard a lot at the time, but forgot about because to be honest they werent all that great..

Ok, here is what I'd do, I'd aim for 2 songs from each year, and pick one sorta indie one that you like, and one that is completely different to it.

So like 1990, something like Sinead Oconner - Nothing Compares 2 U, or Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence, and with that have some obscure album track from some indie band, and you can probably go as obscure as you like.. Just have the balance I guess.. 1990 was a bad year to choose as my example I think..

I mean, as much as I hate electronic music, I'd expect there to be some in a 90s playlist. At least more than what you have.. And rap as well.. You dont seem to have any! Unless the Aquabats are, but I am guessing they arent..

I guess I'm trying to say that popular music shouldnt just be discounted..

Have a nice day.

theres so much good rap from the nineties, but again, the problem is that i dunno how everyone stands on it; theres a fair amount of people who i am almost sure would like something like, say, nas, but its like the metal situation, as in, i am equally sure that there would be people instantly turned off to it regardless of how good it is (i personally like a lot of metal but im not gonna push my luck because i can guarantee i would lose points on the whole for it)

basically, i would diversify, and there definitely is a lot of stuff i could/would like to add, but some of it might hurt my chances to win (its a pretty well sized party run by a lot of "friends of friends", so i cant get away with a whole lot)

If it's a party, then rap is suitable while metal is not. They aren't comparable when people want to chill. I have loads of friends who can't stand rap in normal every day life (myself included), but when it's party time, rap goes as well as anything else. Besides, the awesome rap of the 90s will get anyone moving, humming, tapping the table or what-so-ever.

gotta remember, im not making the play list for the party, im making it for the ten or so people who are running the party (three of which i know well, and the others who i know somewhat)

weve done these parties for about five years and the group running things has a notorious affinity away from most rap; theres a lot i would put on, but again, there is some money on the table, so im trying to appeal to what those ten people would like

i was just about to start writing a huge post with stuff like all saints (awesome) but i guess ill have to slow down and not do fun pop music or whatever. 90s were ok for music!

Le Tigre- Deceptacon
White Stripes - Dead Leaves On The Dirty Ground
Fiona Apple - Paper Bag
Neutral Milk Hotel - King Of Carrot Flowers Part 1
Elliot Smith - Waltz #1
Belle And Sebastian - Mayfly
Tracy Chapman - Smoke And Ashes
Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane
Radiohead - Just
Bjork - Oh So Quiet
Smashing Pumkins - Girl Called Sandoz
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Breeders - Divine Hammer

those are the quintessentially 90s songs in my library+opinion. hope they inspire ?_?;

i love the 90s :)

I like many of your choices but some of the songs are just the most random song possible from some of the bands, its clear you dont want singles but that doesnt mean choose random crap!!!

the dismemberment plan - what do you want me to say? [4:18]
-great band choice, a staple and the song isnt bad...I may have prefered something like you are invited though simply because it is a party. If that song is too common though this is fine

the aquabats - cat with two heads [3:00]
- never heard, no comment

built to spill - i wouldnt hurt a fly [6:15]
- good choice

the flaming lips - psychiatric exploration of the fetus with needles [3:27]
- another staple band with a weird song choice...I might take something like "She Don't Use Jelly" or "A spoonful weighs a ton"

beck - sissyneck [3:52]
- fine for an obscure beck song i guess!

the smashing pumpkins - take me down [2:52]
- this is the one song I found the weirdest...I skip this song every single time I play mellon collie x( I would say try "Here is no Why" or if you want to whip out a slow yet short song to change mood "Stumbleine"

the beta band - the house song [7:14]
-never heard again so no comment, but this being your longest song, it should be your most powerful one, so I hope it is. Actually I will check this song out after reading this post I am curious!

modest mouse - cowboy dan [6:16]
Excellent.

the eels - electric shock blues [2:29]
-Pretty Quality

my bloody valentine - when you sleep [4:11]
-quintessential

the breeders - do you love me now? [3:01]
-never heard

weezer - no other one [3:01]
-I like this choice

pavement - conduit for sale! [2:51]
- I personally am annoyed by this song even though its off the album from my avatar lol. I dont care how indie your friends are, if I had the choice to hear one song off S&E im taking Summer Babe every single time. It's just that amazing. But if you seriously need to be different for the sake of it (which is dumb but if its for a prize) try "Nothing Ever Happens" or "In the Mouth a Desert" but seriously summer babe <3

olivia tremor control - i'm not feeling human [2:17]
- Good and short, need these

neutral milk hotel - king of carrot flowers part 1/part 2 & 3 [5:06]
- Sure, you need something from this album, might as well be this one

total play time - 1:00:10

Overall I like it, some other fun stuff to include maybe could be:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Funky Monks [5:23] (or at least something from this album, it IS a party!)
Radiohead - The Bends [4:06] (its kinda silly to have 90s anything without radiohead)
Bjork - Oh So Quiet [3:41] (gorm said it already but i was thinking it to really shock people)

I was gonna say it would be a good idea to switch it up a bit with at least something a little closer to hip hop, I was ready to suggest, Bombs Over Baghdad - Outkast, but it came out in 2000 ~___~ You should use some Nas then like you said.

Overall, seems like a good party, invite me!!

Damn, if you want deep indie, how in the world can you miss the Pixies?! That band has some stuff that could be very early nineties (most might consider them late eighties). Some party tracks I'm a bit at a loss for, but "Here Comes Your Man" and "Wave of Mutilation" are good, as well as "Where is My Mind" for relaxing a bit towards the end.

Anything pre-Kid A for Radiohead is good (imagine going insane to My Iron Lung or Electioneering, or bringing everything to a close with Street Spirit), Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic is is so dancibly delicious.

Holy shit how can I forget, MOTHERFUCKING DAFT PUNK!!! That shit would be amazing for that party!!! Tracks like "Aerodynamic" "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and "Burnin'" would be total dance floor awesomeness.

big ol post by jack-master

for mellon collie i was going to use 1979 (matches the year theme) but its too long without moving stuff around; ill try to squeeze it in though

im not too familiar with pavement, so that pick was based off of a few listens to the album (i still havent given it a real proper sit down listen for some reason, it just got back-burnered somehow even though i like it a whole lot), so the pick was essentially at random; ill take your word for it since you are the PAVEMENT EXPERT

on second glance i dont really know how i came up with that for flaming lips ?_?, clouds taste metallic has a lot of great songs and i somehow ignored them

sissyneck is my favorite song off of odelay

good call on you are invited i totally didnt think of that!!!

also, ive never been too big on bjorn or radiohead, but i do like rhcp a lot, so if i free up some time thatll probably be one of the first things to go in

also thanks for the suggestions gorm i will check out what i dont recognize

Anything off Blind Melon's first album is AMAZING. No Rain is the popular choice but Time or Paper Scratcher would also be a good idea.

Speaking of Time, put some Hootie and the Blowfish on there.

Feel The Pain - Dinosaur Jr.
Really wanted to mention a Dinosaur Jr. song, and this one of the more popular ones without being to overplayed, and from the 90's. Good chorus, and generally seems like the perfect song for just hanging out with your friends.

but the regrets are killing me - American Football
All the songs from this s/t album are better when listened to in order, but this is one of my favorites. Really good representative of that 90's acoustic sound, with a little bit of what people consider to be 'real emo.' Definitely try this out.

Rest Your Head - The Wrens
The Wrens to me pretty much embodify 90's alt-rock completely, and even more so this song. While not my favorite out of these 3, if I I had to pick one to represent the 90's it would definitely be this.

Not much else jumps out for me, I don't have enough of my music labeled with years and was pretty surprised to see I had a lot more 80's stuff. Pretty much everything recommended is good, and if I had to scrounge for a 4th suggestion I might try

Why I Like The Robins/I'd Like Your Hair Long/I Hate It too - Hum
Probably the best 3 song stretch on any album I can think of, can't go wrong picking any of these.

get something from the album Goo by Sonic Youth

Portishead - Wandering Star too (or your favorite Portishead song)

Imagine the party once this song comes on... everyone will just drop to the floor and stare at the fucking sky. Absolutely amazing song.

I would definitely have to say anything from Achtung Baby. Like, The Fly or Mysterious Ways or One.

rhcp too, anything off Californication or Blood Sugar.

Also, I know it might not be quite as "indie" as you'd like, but Nirvana is pretty great too.

nirvana - smells like teen spirit

!!!!!!!!

Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole would work too.
