The Kunal Invitational - Week 1

The Kunal Invitational

(Art Creds AIRedzone)
I threw together this invitational because I was interested to see how the best players in the tier interact with a bo3 team-lock tournament in the context of DOU. Coming from VGC initially it was very surprising to me to learn that the Smogon community tends to run things either bo1 or bo3 without team-lock, because they seem like 2 extreme ends of the competitive spectrum where you're either getting a very small sample size of games or requiring 3x the prep for players (prepping 3 teams a week for their bo3s). I felt that bo3 team lock would be a good way to express teambuilding skill, while allowing for more games to avoid major matchup fishing and manage risk. Once I got the first few people onboard with this idea I started realizing how high the level of competition could be in this tour (in terms of player skill level). I decided to legitimize it a bit more and run a proper 16 person bracket with as many skilled players as I could find, as well as front a $750 prizepool. I'm hoping that this tour will not only provide some insight into bo3 team-lock as a competitive concept in 6v6, but also provide some really high level showmatches between the best players in the tier. If this invitational proves to be fun and successful I'll plan to make it a regular event.

Tournament Structure
  • SV DOU
  • Bo3 sets
  • Team lock during each set
    • Players CANNOT switch teams between games of a set. The team they load game 1 must be the same as game 2 and game 3
    • Players CAN switch teams between rounds/opponents.
    • Use this command to challenge your opponents, to avoid any concerns about team changes between games.
      Code:
      /challenge username, [gen 9] DoublesOU @@@ best of = 3
  • The tournament will be run in 2 phases
    • Phase 1: Pools (3 weeks)
      • 4 pools of 4 players each
      • Round robin (3 rounds, 1 per week, TO will assign each week’s opponent)
      • Top 2 in each pool gets fed into the winners’ side of a Double Elimination bracket
      • Bottom 2 in each pool gets fed into the losers’ side of a Double Elimination bracket
      • Tiebreakers described below
    • Phase 2: Double Elimination Bracket (6 - 7 weeks)
      • Standard double elimination bracket, starting with 8 players in winners and 8 players in losers
      • Week 1 of phase 2, all players play their matches. After this, Winners side has 2 weeks per round while losers bracket plays every week, to account for losers side having extra rounds
      • Grand finals will have a bracket reset if the player from losers bracket wins the first bo3. In the event of a grand finals bracket reset, players are allowed to switch teams prior to the second bo3
        • This ensures that we don’t have to watch the same game up to 6 times
  • The Invitational will start the week of April 28th, and will end on July 6th (if everything runs as planned)

Tiebreakers will be calculated in order from first to last until any tie is broken.
  1. Set differential across all games
  2. Head to Head record
  3. Game differential across all games
  4. Alive pokemon differential across all games
    1. In the event of a forfeit, the player who forfeit will be considered to have 0 pokemon alive for differential purposes, while their opponent will be considered to have the number of pokemon alive at the turn of forfeit
  5. Coin Flip

Prizepool
  • This tour will have a $750 prizepool, provided entirely by me
  • The prizepool will be split among 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in a 60:30:10 ratio
    • $450 for 1st
    • $225 for 2nd
    • $75 for 3rd
  • The prizepool will be paid to the winners via PayPal, based on the US dollar value (Meaning I will enter $450 into paypal and you will receive whatever the converted amount is in your local currency minus any paypal fees). I will be completely transparent about the payment process so you are aware of exactly how much money you will receive

Content Plans
  • Me and eragon intend to cast/record as many sets as we can throughout the tournament. Aside from being a bo3 team-lock concept tour and a general high level invitational, we want to make it an enjoyable experience for the DOU community to follow along with.
  • We managed to get some of the best players in the tier to sign up, ideally this tournament is able to push the meta a bit and be as accessible as possible with video content

Players were individually selected by me, with a preference for proven skill/performance in the tier

Pools:
Pools were decided via random number generator (Video here)

Week 1 pairings will be posted in this thread on April 28th, and following weeks will be posted in the thread accordingly. Current week will always be updated on the main post. If anyone has any questions or concerns please post in the thread or dm me or whatever. If any of the participants see this and have changed their minds about participating please let me know asap so I can find a replacement.

Thanks Bagel for letting me host this on the DOU subforum

my theory is that team lock only works in vgc because you only bring 4, making each game different since you can adapt to situatuations in many different ways. im excited to see if this theory is actually proven or disproven in this tournament, very good idea

Little prono here for pool (totally inaccurate and biased)

Pool 1 :
Hard Stuck pool, nobody wants to be between them in this pool .. Ingame / Haxx will be the main discussion here.
MADARAAAA : The italian goat is here. Just let him cook for cashprize.
Michaelderbeste2 : The Deutsch goat is here. I don't really know if he build his own teams, but I trust his perfect ingame.
qsns : Already here when he needs to, but being out of OSDT is rude for training and staying focus.
SMB : The player I underestimate the most in this pool. He plays this week vs Mdb2 for OSDT and potential top cut, the result will determine if he'll be 2 or 4 here.

Pool 2 : Everyone will show no mercy, building and surprise will be the key to go out of this pool.
Ratpacker : THE ULTIMATE GOAT ! He'll win this tour.
Zee : Solid, good building depends on VGC application, but if free for DOU it's a solid 2nd place here.
Bage1 : Same as Zee, a perfect 50/50 between them, pure shonen battle.
Emforbes : I really underestimate Emforbes because I didn't knew much :( Show me your fighting spirit !

Pool 3 : The classic
Spurrific : Just the solid guy standing ahead of everyone only haxx can fear him. (and DUU teams)
Nido : Nido can goes out of this pool with perfect build (and he know how to do it !)
ESM : He didn't cost less than 30k here. Solid player, solid builder but can be counter prep.
Akaru : I didn't see him play since a while, so I don't really know where he can go (imo really far but doubting)

Pool 4 : The weirdest pool imho, all longtime players, same ingame style, same building preferences ...
Frixel : The favorite of this tour with Ratpacker, my derb'goat <3
Xrn : I don't know how he can be this good all along these years .. Just an OVNI (ufo for weird)
Ann : Always good, well prepared, ingame like perfect, I don't see how oppo will win if they don't use surprise mons/gameplan.
Nails : VGC have bonus in this format, but I don't see a VGC player going out of this pool. Counter measure need to be used.

tl;dr
All pools are giga stacked. WP Kunal / Eragon for that, we all know you knew the star position to get these random number going perfect.
Ratpacker - Frixel - MADARAAA - Spurrific are for me the top 4 of this tour.
