Looking for some advice on my currently quite enjoyable team.
Jolteon (F) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Sleep Talk
Specs Jolteon replaced Bronzong because I was missing a fast special attacker to run cleanup and hit various things supereffectively, like dragons. So far, he's doing great. Volt absorb is best friends with my encore lead as it means Jolts can get a free volt absorb off of a thunder wave lead.
Dragonite @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Roost
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Punch
Weakness Policy Dragonite is going to be on every team, I swear. I use this guy as my go-to one turn setup sweeper. Whenever I can, I switch to him and DD up and pray someone cashes in my weakness policy. Multiscale allows me to live most STAB ice attacks, though I did die to an avalanche recently, and everything else. On a good day, can sweep whole teams. On a bad day, almost always gets 1-2 key mons. Remember to roost off SR to reactivate Multiscale!
Accelgor @ Lum Berry
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 108 HP / 4 SDef / 144 Spd / 252 Def
Timid Nature
- Encore
- Yawn
- Spikes
- U-turn
This guy is neat! I was looking for a unique lead that would allow me to deal with Keychainmon. I found him in this guy. He's faster than aero and can encore a status move from pokemon with trickster while curing it with lum. I can usually set up on the back of that.
Against everything else, encore is awesome. Set up a layer of spikes, and then encore their set-up move. They will switch, and I u-turn to keep momentum.
EV spread is to patch the hole in Accelgor's defense. I'm not sure if more HP would be better -- I don't know how to test that. 144 speed beats Timid Jolteon.
If they attack directly, I either die and switch in Dragoninte, who can set up on damn near anything that doesn't have a boost, or I yawn next turn and then die, and then I switch in Dragonite. The other poke has to switch, and I can either Roost off SR.
Malamar @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 176 Atk / 224 HP / 108 SDef
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Trick Room
- Superpower
- Night Slash
- Rock Slide
I'm probably going to get some flak for this, but don't knock it until you try it. The brave little Inkay that could can sweep easily on physically heavy teams. I was running bronzong to set up Trick Room/Reflect to guarantee some damage, but I found that Malamar just doesn't need it, and Bronzong is kinda ... well, everything hits him now.
This mon rolls over King's Guard Aegislash because you get a +2 boost from spamming Night Slash every time he does it, and it's a 2HKO without a boost if he goes offensive at any time (1HKO with a boost and after shadow sneak). You also get a speed boost from sticky web, but you're still slower than anything with decent speed.
Anyway, Superpower gives you +Atk/+Def on each use, and Night Slash is there for ghosts. Rock Slide takes care of flying, and there you have it. EVs are there to add bulk and to help take special hits.
You would be surprised what this guy lives through. Always set up trick room unless you have a pending 2hko priority attack facing you. The reason is simple: It works out the same either way if the opponent is faster. Here's an example:
Opponent attacks
You Superpower (+stats)
Opponent Attacks
or...
Opponent Attacks
You Trick Room
You Attack
You Superpower
Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spd / 248 HP / 8 SAtk
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Spd
- Perish Song
- Protect
- Substitute
- Shadow Ball
Perish Song Mega-gar is my wallbreaker. For those that haven't seen the set, you switch in on a poke that doesn't attack, cast perish song, protect, sub, switch to your tank. The poke will faint. If they baton pass out, the poke they baton pass to will faint. Gives up a touch of initiative, but that's fine with this team, and I have trouble breaking certain physical walls.
Hard counters Mega-Kangaskhan not running EQ (they always run sucker punch) and any other poke that relies on sucker punch to be effective vs. Gengar. Can trap and kill almost any support pokemon. Great mon overall! Shadow ball still hits hard as well.
Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 Def / 252 HP / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Toxic
- Scald
I'd eventually like to trade this guy out for a better WishPasser that deals with some of my issues. However, this guy works well for my team, absorbing most special hits with ease and many physical ones as well. His main schtick is to toxic/wish/protect wall many annoying pokemon, deal with status spam, and to try for scald burns. He runs cleanup well because he can usually take a hit.
His other big bonus is that if something can't deal damage to Dragonite, I can wishpass to him and heal off SR, reactivating multiscale and allowing him to set up without Roosting.
-------------
A good match goes something like this:
Accelgor goes first and lays spikes, then Encores or Yawns to give another pokemon a safe switch. Dragonite and Malmar are my primary choices, and I try to set them up quickly and avoid letting my opponent get set up. If my opponent switches in a good counter, I try to get Gengar in to trap and remove it, sometimes by sacrificing Accelgor. If all goes well, my first few pokes have blown a hole in the other team and I'm sitting on a set up Dragonite or a +2.5atk/+2.5def Malamar and just need to play safe and clean up.
I also score wins often off of my opponent thinking they can finish off my Malamar once he's set up or not anticipating Trick Room's power on him and letting him set up for free.
A bad match goes something like this:
My Accelgor does his job, but my opponent is able to KO my sweeper quickly, only losing and unimportant pokemon. I switch in Vaporeon at a bad time, and my opponent switches in a counter and starts setting up. I try to deal with it but my Pokemon takes a lot of damage on the switch, my Vaporeon doesn't hold up, or my other sweeper takes too much damage out of the gate. Without offensive threats, my opponent is able to outdamage me, and I'm unable to use wishes from Vaporeon to come back because the Vaporeon counter is still there.
(I also lose several close matches here and there involving heavy hitters trading blows, particularly against Talonflame.)
Overall, this team is doing really well and has pulled me up from the dark ages to 1400+ on ladder. I'm looking for a rate, critique, feedback and ideas for switching out pokes, particularly Vaporeon.
Threat list:
Abomasnow - Malamar sets up, don't mind hail
Absol/Mega Absol - Malamar usually sets up, superpower can KO
Aegislash - Lots of pokes on my team do well vs. Aegislash. Dragonite and Malamar trade well against him. I don't consider him a threat.
Lead Aerodactyl - Don't really mind him, I set up a layer of spikes and U-turn off the taunt to break his sash.
Aggron - Usually 2hko'd by something
Alakazam - Could be rough, but Accelgor hits supereffective with U-turn and Vaporeon can often wall
Auroros - No experience
Azelf - No experience
Azumarill - I have to play keepaway with Dragonite as I run fire punch. Haven't had a problem with belly drum sweeps because Vaporeon can spam scald/protect.
Barbaracle - Definitely a threat if he can shell smash, but all my pokes are offensive enough to shoot him down quickly
Blaziken - Dragonite sets up on him, resisting fire/fighting and DDing on protect turns. Vaporeon can scald if it's not too amped up.
Breloom - Perishgar traps, Accelgor or Jolteon can absorb sleep. No issues so far.
Carbink - Most faeries are bait for Accelgor/Dragonite due to weakness policy.
Celebi - No experience so far
Mega Charizard - I had a mega Charizard outspeed my Jolteon today. I was quite confused. I would love to know the stats on this pair. Usually, Vaporeon scalds to death, but solarbeam could be scary.
Clawitzer - Dragonite sets up
Cloyster - Malamar sets up and destroys if boosted.
Conkeldurr - Hurts, but tends to trade about 1 for 1.
Diggersby - Never seen it
Ditto - It does what I do but worse
Dragonite - Dragonite sets up on it. LOL. Usually my lead puts mine on the field first, and whoevers comes out first. If not, Jolteon OHKO with ice beam even after 1 boost.
Dugtrio - Could be good against my team. Traps Jolteon and Accelgor.
Espeon - Annoying. Accelgor can get a strong hit off, and Gengar can trap the calm mind edition.
Excadrill - Usually rapid spins and then cries as his team gets swept by a set up Malamar.
Flogres - Pure faerie is a bit tough to deal with, but I usually trade Malamar for it 1-1.
Galvantula - Encore means that it only gets sticky web, but this has been an issue in some matches. I can still set up, though.
Garchomp - My team seems to wreck garchomp. Weakness policy ddnight can DD in his face and survive a STAB. Malamar wins by bulking up in his face and superpowering him down.
Gardevior - Great pokemon. Can do a lot of damage.
Goodra - Murdered by Malamar and Dragonite
Gothielle - No experience
Greninja - Sometimes troublesome due to high speed and varied movepool. Jolteon can hang, but with Protean, it's difficult to predict him. If Malamar is already set up, though, he can take him out. If my opponent has the inititive, I usually have to wear him down and sacrifice someone.
Gyarados - Malamar runs rock slide and gets a boost from intimidate. Not usually an issue, but can be if he gets set up on Vaporeon.
Hawlucha - This pokemon is so cool! I haven't seen anyone using his good sets, but I should be able to Jolteon him?
Haxorus - Dragonite
Heatran - Not in yet, but should wall fire punch Dragonite
Heliolisk - This thing is neato, but it's not Jolteon. I'm never sure what it's running, so it can take out some pokes before it dies.
Heracross - Murders Malamar, but should die to Dragonite fire punch if there's no stealth rock.
Houndoom - Walled by Vaporeon
Hydregion - Dragonite/Malamar both set up.
Jirachi - No experience, but Dragonite doesn't fear him
Keledo - No experience
Kyurem - No experience
Landorus - No experience
Latias/Latios - No experience
Lucario - Dragonite/Malamar are both good against him, but Malamar needs to have trick room set up already. Vaporeon can try for scalds. Accelgor can encore a swords dance. Gengar can trap.
Mamoswine - Gets set up on by half of my team
Mawile - Can occasionally do damage. Not really sure what it does, TBH, aside from having a gross attack stat.
Medicham - No special plan, but I haven't had trouble yet...
Mew - Wait, Mew is OU?
Meinshao - Last spotted high jump kicking himself off a cliff.
Noviern - Neat pokemon! Can clean up well if my team is weakened, but full HP Dragonite can live through a meteor and Trick Roomed up Malamar can rock slide him out.
Pangoro - I think I beat this guy, but he tends to hurt.
Pinsir - See Heracross
Politoad - Makes it rain, but Dragonite can counter Kindgra. Specs Jolteon for water type cleanup.
Reuniclus - U-turn actually hurts this guy a lot, and Malamar can finish him with Night Slash. Vaporeon can toxic the special versions, but it regenerates. Could be a threat if used right, but I have a winning record vs. it.
Rotom-W - Good defense vs my team. Vaporeon can't wall him. Jolteon can switch into him and threaten shadow balls, and Malamar can switch in on non-WoW editions.
Salamence - Currently wishing he was Dragonite.
Scolipede - The fastest thing alive enjoys getting his swords dance or substitute encored by my Accelgor as a lead. Can be a threat in the middle of the game, though.
Scizor - I've had issues with Scizor, but I run fire punch on Dragonite now and Malamar can superpower for normal damage. Vaporeon can go for burns. He's won a few games in tight spots, but he certainly doesn't ruin me.
Smeargle - Accelgor w/ Lum Berry is a good start for me. I can encore sleep powder and then switch in anyone I like.
Starmie - Murdered by Jolteon, Malamar night slash is good.
Stoutland - No exp
Sylveon - This poke can switch in on Dragonite. It doesn't leave without a chunk missing, but it usually lives through a DD'd weakness policied Fire Punch. Attract is fucking obnoxious as well, and it resists Malamars attacks. Could use some tips on how to remove him. Gengar can trap on occasion.
Talonflame - Formerly, I would sacrifice Bronzong to set up Malamar. Now I just throw Vaporeon at it and go for scalds. Definitely a threat, but not team-breaking.
Thundurus - No exp
Togekiss - Annoying, but Dragonite can deal with him effectively if I'm in first. Generally trades 1-1. Specs Jolteon can also finish off weakened versions.
Tornadous - No exp
Tyranitar - Lead gets its stealth rock encored, which is hilarious. Anything else has trouble dealing with Malamar after its taken some damage, trouble with Vaporeon, some and some trouble with Gengar and Jolteon depending on the situation. May seem like a threat, but my team is very consistently a winner against any sandstorm team.
Victini - No exp
Virizion - No exp
Vivilion - Quiver dance is a great set-up move, but usually can't get past the gang.
Volcorona - Great poke and definitely a threat. I have a few options, but I usually go to Vaporeon. Random dragon claws from D-nite sometimes required.
Weavile - Haven't seen one. Priority Weavile seems like it would do well, but it's too squishy for Malamar and Superpower would get started.
Zygarde - Jolteon, Dragonite
Defensive Threats
Most walls are eventually broken by Malamar. Most other walls are trapped by mean look Gengar and killed. Phasing is annoying, however. I've pulled out some special cases.
Avalugg - Super tanky and rapid spins. OHKOs Multiscale Dragonite. Hits OK against lots of other things. I can wall with Vaporeon, though. Still, a threat.
Chesnaught - Grass is a suprisingly good type against my team. Leech seed adds up and this guy is hard for me to take down. Usually trades positively for Malamar and then a chunk off another mon.
Gliscor - Can wall most of my team if Jolteon is dead. HP Ice thankfully kills.
Sylveon - Really obnoxious, need to find a solution here.
Tangrowth & Trevenant - Also really obnoxious, physically tanky mon that can do quite a bit of annoying things and is hard to trap w/ Gengar.
Tentacruel - Such a good special wall, and Jolteon switches out. Immune to Toxic, so it beats Vaporeon.
