The Battle Tree
The Battle Tree is long-format PvE Facility that features Pokemon battles and light roleplay. It is suitable for players of all skill levels.

(
Ref Guide mk.V | CR Table | Title Shop | Flavor Guide )

For Entry
  • Players and referees must be T.Lv1 or higher.
  • Referees must additionally be whitelisted. The Battle Tree should not be a user's first reffing.

Rules of Conduct

In addition to standard Pokemon battling, the Battle Tree also features brief roleplay segments. In these segments, player expression and creativity is encouraged. Please adhere to the following guidelines:
  • Always make sure to keep subject matters appropriate for all ages.
    • If any subjects brought up make you feel uncomfortable, notify the ref immediately. (You may also notify a mod if you wish.)
    • If the ref tells you that they feel uncomfortable due to something you wrote, delete the message in question and discuss with them how to handle the offending content -- either by altering the details, or by skipping over it entirely.
      • Just because someone says they feel uncomfortable doesn't necessarily mean the person who wrote the message did anything wrong. Different people react to things in different ways.
  • Do not insult the ref.
  • Do not harm or injure human characters.
  • No blood, gore, serious injuries, or onscreen death.
Challenge Details

The challenge consists of three (3) battles, with a roleplay segment before each battle. The roleplay segments are mainly for the entertainment of the player and the ref, and they have no impact upon the battles or upon EXP earned.

At the end of the challenge, the challenger's Pokemon gain EXP based on how many battles they won. The challenger is also awarded with Roleplay Tokens (RPT) that can be spent on unique Battle-Tree-only items.

The challenger's Pokemon are completely healed after each battle. Even if the challenger loses a battle, their Pokemon are healed and the challenge continues regardless.

Battle Details
  • 2v2 Singles
  • Ref sends out first.
  • Items: Off
  • Technique Control (per battle):
    • Level 1: 0
    • Level 2: 1
    • Level 3: 1
    • Level 4: 2
  • Substitutions: 2 (challenger), 1 (ref)
  • 2 Recoveries, 5 Chills.
  • Switch = OK
  • DQ: 48 hours (challenger), 72 hours (ref)
  • Special rules:
    • The challenger's OHKO moves always fail.
    • Illusion has no effect.
    • Bide deals damage equal to 1.25x damage taken.
    • Only one (1) of the ref's moves can be Sealed at any given time. (If the ref already has a sealed move, then effects that would seal an additional move fail. Effects that would seal 2+ moves at once fail.)
Roleplay Segment Details

Roleplay Segments are narrative segments that have no impact upon battles or EXP earnings. During each Roleplay Segment, the ref will place some kind of problem or obstacle in your path. Your job is to describe how your Pokemon respond to that obstacle -- by overcoming it, working around it, succumbing to it, or whatever other reaction makes the most sense for your Pokemon. In order to earn rewards, your response must meet the following criteria:
  • Your response must be at least 1 paragraph in length.
  • The challenger's team must react to the obstacle.
  • Each Pokemon must contribute at least one (1) thing from the following list:
    • A move it knows.
    • Its Ability.
    • Its Pokedex entry (from any of the official Pokemon games).
    • Its biology (from Bulbapedia).
    • Its Background.
    • Its Merit.
    • Its Demerit.
  • For each Pokemon, at least one (1) of the things that it contributes must be new within that challenge. (For example, if a Pokemon used Water Gun on a previous Roleplay Segment, then Water Gun on its own will not be a valid contribution for the next Roleplay Segment.)
  • You and your Pokemon must stick together as a group.
Assuming your response is valid, each Pokemon that contributes to that Roleplay Segment will earn you 1 Roleplay Token (RPT) (max. 2). At the end of the challenge, RPT can be exchanged for Titles. Each Scenario has its own set of available Titles to choose from at the end of the challenge.

Note that the challenger's team must react to the obstacle, but they need not overcome it. For example, suppose the obstacle in one RP Segment is a steep chasm that the challenger needs to cross. The challenger sees that one of their Pokemon has the Demerit of "being scared of heights." In their response, the challenger writes that their Pokemon becomes anxious and refuses to cross the chasm. Even though it does not resolve the problem put before the challenger, this response is valid because it describes a valid reaction to the obstacle.

It is strongly suggested to make both of your Pokemon contribute something to each RP Segment, since doing so will earn you the maximum amount of RPT.

Be as creative with your responses as you like! None of your actions during RP Segments will incur any in-battle consequences, so do whatever you think makes the most sense or sounds the most fun.

Requirements

The challenger brings two (2) Pokemon that have the same Level and the same Challenge Rating (CR).
Optional: If the challenger owns any Titles, they may also assign a Title to each of their Pokemon. (Titles are special attachments that grant a Pokemon extra Merits and Demerits. Max. 1 Title per Pokemon. Only one of those Titles may have a Rule Alteration.)
The challenger pays 4 JC.

Sign-Up Procedure
  • If you wish to challenge the Battle Tree, then reply to this thread using the Sign-Up Template below. Your post will include information about the team you are challenging with, as well as some details about the challenge itself.
  • A ref will take your challenge on a first-come first-served basis. (Players who are challenging Tree for the first time take priority.)
  • Once your challenge is finished, claim your rewards (excluding RPT) in the Prize Claiming thread as if it were a battle.
  • You may re-challenge the Battle Tree as soon as you like. (Players may only have one (1) active Tree challenge at a time.)
[B]Challenge Thread (if any)[/B]: Challenge Thread
[B]Scenario (optional)[/B]: Scenario

[B]Pokemon 1[/B]: Pokemon info in a Hide tag
[B]Background 1[/B]: A brief bit of info about where your Pokemon came from. (max. 1 paragraph)
[B]Merit 1[/B]: A positive quality or skill unique to this Pokemon. (If it is a skill, it must be something that is possible for a human.)
[B]Demerit 1[/B]: A negative quality unique to this Pokemon.
[B]Title 1 (optional)[/B]: A Title you own, and all info associated with it.

[B]Pokemon 2[/B]: Pokemon info in a Hide tag
[B]Background 2[/B]: A brief bit of info about where your Pokemon came from. (max. 1 paragraph)
[B]Merit 2[/B]: A positive quality or skill unique to this Pokemon. (If it is a skill, it must be something that is possible for a human.)
[B]Demerit 2[/B]: A negative quality unique to this Pokemon.
[B]Title 2 (optional)[/B]: A Title you own, and all info associated with it.
(Scenarios only affect the narrative elements of Roleplay Segments, and have no effect upon battles or rewards.)

Beach Day: You and your Pokemon are spending a summer's day at the crowded beach, enjoying the hot sun and cool ocean. However, unbeknownst to all, something sinister seems to be lurking in the water...

Carnival: An annual festival in which humans and Pokemon celebrate their bonds of partnership. Enjoy the food, music, parades, and performances -- and of course, be dragged into many Pokemon battles by overeager Trainers.

Feudal Scuffle: While wandering through the feudal Ransei region, you see a plume of smoke rising from a neighboring province. Could it be a natural disaster? A wild Pokemon attack? Or perhaps an invading warlord? Only one way to find out... Travel across the untamed wilderness and resolve the incident!

Great-Ball Run: A long-distance race that spans the whole region over a period of ten days. Ride your Pokemon through mountains, plains, and sea to be the first to claim victory; just, don't expect the other racers to play fair!

High-Rise Metropolis: One of the most populous cities in the region. Scenic skyscrapers, speedy subways, and delicious eateries make this a great tourist spot. But you're not here for leisure -- today, you're here to track down a wanted criminal, capture them, and claim the sizable bounty on their head.

Time Warp: A wormhole suddenly appears! It sucks you in, transporting you and your Pokemon through time! You find yourselves in a distant era, surrounded by bizarre sights and unknowable dangers... Can you find a way to return, or will you be lost to time forever?

Spending Roleplay Tokens (RPT):
  • Roleplay Tokens (RPT) can be spent for Titles to use in the Battle Tree, and have no other use.
  • RPT cannot be stockpiled. Do not track your RPT in your Profile or in the Prize Claiming Thread.
  • When you challenge Battle Tree, in your signup post you may spend the RPT you earned from your previous challenge to buy any number of Titles.
  • Which Titles are available for purchase is determined by which Scenario you earned them from. (See the Title Shop for a list of Titles and associated Scenarios.)
  • RPT you earn that you do not spend in your next signup post is lost forever.
  • Once you buy a Title, you own it forever.
  • You may bring any Title you own to any Tree challenge.
  • You may buy a title and use that title within the same signup post if you wish.

Now that I’ve successfully started my hiatus from BBP, it’s time to celebrate by going to the beach! Surely I will not be forced into combat with anyone there!

Background 1: Honeyfruit was an innocent flower who loved to dance. She would dance with the wind all day in her fields, waiting for someone to be able to out-dance her. The only one who'd ever been able to match her moves was a handsome young cherrim with an easy smile.
Merit 1: Cheerfulness - Honeyfruit is forever finding the joys of life, and looking for excuses to be silly.
Demerit 1: Naivete - Honeyfruit always assumes the best of others, sometimes to her own detriment. She doesn't think anyone could bear to hurt others, because she assumes they think like she does. Sadly, they do not.

Background 2: Flower was a wanderer who followed the sun. He loves seeing the sights and floating with the breeze. He figured his best way to travel the world was to just follow an aspiring trainer around. While journeying with his trainer, he met the prettiest lilligant in the world—maybe the one that could get him to settle down.
Merit 2: Well-Traveled - This pokemon has been around the block. He knows about many, many different oddities.
Demerit 2: Distractable - This pokemon is easily distracted by things, and will often juggle multiple ideas at once. Sometimes this leads to conversational mixups.

Background: While most of Keriel's Pokemon are artificial, arcane constructs created to shape the Mage's will into a form suitable to these lands, the Harbingers' divine essence is not something he can replicate. The Northern Gale finds itself at home in the tundra where he resides, far away from most of those it deems not worth its time... but it can be reluctant to leave for other adventures.
Merit: Revered by many humans, as one of the divine birds.

Background: Golemancy is a difficult science; not so much in theory, even - it's not hard to ensoul an object - but to make the soul animate, to give it something to do instead of merely being trapped in a shell, is much more challenging. Still, being able to often possess his creations has its advantages for this sort of research. Having heard of electric constructs like Voltorb and Porygon, Keriel thought to see if he could replicate their mechanisms, and after having a crate of mundane appliances shipped to his tower at great expense, created miniaturized versions so that he could bring them with him to bind the new spirit to as necessary.
Merit: Miniaturized! Good for scouting and getting into places it shouldn't be.
Demerit: Gets restless if in a form for too long, and may abandon tasks it's bored with to try something different.

The final member of the trio that greeted me when I woke up was a new one. Felicia was actually a gift from a fellow Trainer, and has been taught the fine arts of service. She's got a natural instinct for assistance and is always extremely happy to help in any way she can. She can get a bit overbearing at times, but only because she wishes for the best, which makes everyone forgive her almost instantly. Except that one time she dropped the soup on Hubert accidentally. He didn't like that.
Oh, and there are times where she spouts accidental innuendos. Lots of times. One could think she does it on purpose to mess with people, but no.

Pokemon 1: :houndoom:Ambrosius the Houndoom
Background: Passed between homes for most of his early years, Ambrosius developed an antisocial nature that led to even further rejection. Eventually, his latest owners turned to the racing circuit for the chance to wash their hands of him. His prestigious size was the main quality that drew the attention of Lou, who need a riding Pokemon for the race. Will his attitude be a detriment to his racer, or will time spent with nature be what he needs?
Merit: Skilled in tracking and survival. With Ambrosius, we're unlikely to lose our way.
Demerit: Apprehensive and impulsive. Ambrosius is quick to take assumption as fact, and quicker still to pick fights.

Pokemon 2: :swoobat:Cassandra the Swoobat
Background: In this tale, Cassandra was raised as a scouting Pokemon to begin with. She raced before with her previous racer, but with their disappearance she had no racer to pathfind for. She agreed to pathfind for Lou after obtaining his promise to find out what happened to her previous racer.
Merit: A sharp-eyed and keen-eyed lookout; Cassandra can get the lay of the land even in the dark.
Demerit: Highly distractable and prone to daydreaming.

(The prize we're racing for, and the fate of Cassadra's prior owner is left up to you, the ref. Surprise me!)

Name Etymology:
A daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy in Greek myth. Blessed by Apollo with the gift of prophecy, but cursed by him to be believed by no one.

Attitude and Motive:
Cassandra is jovial and pleasant, an experienced and avid listener, and just an all-round laid back friend to those in need of one.

Background:
One of Lou's earliest Pokemon. Her return was foretold in the smoke and ash of the dying age, and thunder shall peal and crack the earth at her coming. The fields shall wither upon her arrival, the seas shall be as tar, and thereafter the last song of man shall chronicle their lament. Claiming the Innovator title for helping make a Dodrio profile!

Challenge Thread: None yet!
Scenario: Great Ball Run

Pokemon 1: :jumbao: Taro the Jumbao
Background 1: Taro hails from the lush jungles of Alola and loves to dance. She is also very energetic, especially in the sunlight, which is perfect for a race like the Great Ball Run.
Merit 1: Cheerful and friendly, Taro loves to help anyone and everyone.
Demerit 1: Her large size, when combined with her boundless energy, can cause endless trouble.

Pokemon 2: :metagross: Tera the Metagross
Background 2:
Code:
public background() {
    print("Pulled in by Probopass's Magnet Pull.");
    print("Fascinated with human behaviors.");
    print("IQ is " + Integer.MAX_VALUE + "!!!");
}
Merit 2: Super observant and has a great memory. This will definitely help with navigation.
Demerit 2: Very shy and doesn't talk often. Don't put her on the spot, or she might overheat.

:SS/Jumbao:
Taro

Species: Jumbao, Gender: Female
Level: 2, EXP: 0 / 10
Nature: Docile (No effect)

Typing: Grass / Fairy
Abilities: Trace / Overcoat / (Unlocked) Drought
Profile:
Taro likes to dance happily, shaking her hefty limbs and spinning to create a maraca sound that would rival Maractus. The dance can strengthen the sunlight which lets her fire off powerful Solar Beams. Her large size can be a bit difficult when navigating tight spaces, but it also lends her enormous strength, although Taro prefers to use special moves over physical moves. Despite her extreme weakness in Poison-type attacks, she and Node are good friends since they are both very energetic.

How They Met:
On a trip through Alola, Doduodrio met Taro in the lush jungle filled with tropical trees and plants. Being a jungle, it was quite difficult to navigate, so he asked Taro for assistance and they've been friends ever since!

Name Origins:
Jumbao's limbs are visually very similar to the taro root.

Side Note:
Since Taro does not seem to have an obvious mouth to talk with, she communicates through :blobsad: and :bloblul: and .

Species:
Metagross, Gender: Unknown
Level: 2, EXP: 0 / 10
Nature: Docile
Typing: Steel / Psychic
Abilities: Clear Body / (Unlocked) Light Metal
Profile:
Tera is very thoughtful and is quiet most of the time, so a lot of the time, people forget that they are even there... or at least people would forget if they weren't so big. They are very inquisitive and are always collecting data about everybody they see for future use.

How They Met:
Being a Steel-type, Tera was drawn in by Bub's Magnet Pull. Doduodrio helped them unstick themself from Bub (Note to Self: Maybe Bub can help attract more Steel-type friends?). Tera was curious about bonds and the stock market (at least that's what Doduodrio thinks they said...) so they asked to join the team!

Name Origins:
Tera is from terabyte, a computer term. It's also the prefix for one trillion, which may just as well be Tera's IQ level.

See Jughead, from the Team Archie comics. Fortunately, its desires aren't all encompassing, and what it endlessly craves lies on a narrow spectrum. However, each day that spectrum widens, and its trainer worries what TAM will do when the thrill of battle no longer sates its appetite.

Background 2: Repentance got its nickname as its trainer Hyjack saw it leading a group comprised of various Geodude, Zubat, and Koffing through a busy city street. Trainers looked on in confusion, then observed the organization on display as the Geodude collected trash in the street, the Koffing produced a strange gas that seems to merge with existing pollutants in the air, and the Zubat flapped its wings to blow the smog towards Weezing-Galar, who neutralized it. Onlookers were baffled at the organization on display that day.

Merit 1Driven and motivated, it is the first Pokemon of its species to successfully start a Go-Fund Me. Repentance tries to tackle the environmental impact of mass Repellants being used all over the world, damaging the ecosystem of the many caverns Weezing call home.
Demerit 2: Allegedly embezzles funds from its Kickstarter campaigns. No one knows what it would be spending money on though...

A couple rules changes:

[Battle Rules]: Changed to 2 Recoveries, 5 Chills.

This adjustment applies to all Battle Segments that begin after this post.

---
[Gimmick Adjustments]

Old:
The ref's Pokemon immediately performs a non-damaging move that they know (without spending their action).
New: (The first time this Gimmick activates, choose a non-damaging move the ref's Pokemon knows.) The ref's Pokemon immediately performs their selected move (without spending their action). If the move uses a Recovery, any HP modifications caused by the move are halved.

Old: Swap stat adjustments between the two active Pokemon.
New: The ref's Pokemon copies all stat stage boosts from the challenger's Pokemon.

These adjustments apply to all Gimmick assignments that happen after this post.

Background 1: Maxim encountered Corrine at Meteor Falls during his travels in the Hoenn Region. One would be hard pressed to find a Salamence as gentle and kind as Corrine. Corrine is a great artist, and carries a specially made satchel full of art supplies wherever she goes.
Merit 1: Surprisingly agile.
