The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Lets see here, I intended to watch the film edition about two years ago so I could watch the musical version, but only recently did I get a copy of this on dvd. (thats right, the conversational tune of this review rocks! ^^)

To begin, the synopsis: Priscilla is a delightful bag of mixed goodies, two drag queens, Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) and Felicia (Guy Pearce) and a transsexual, Bernadette (Terence Stamp) ride in a lavender bus across the Australian outback, starting their trip in Sydney to end up in Alice Springs to perform a great (Australian) drag rendition of "Finally".

Accompanying the storyline are ridiculous outfits (mystic green fishnet o.O), oversexualised humour (Why don't you just light your tampon and, blow your box apart? Because it's the only bang you're ever gonna get, sweetheart!), and iconic images of rural Australia (a drag performance with Indigenous Australians at a corroboree)

Of course in any review of Priscilla, one must reinforce the significant impacts this film has on Australian culture; whether it be mainstream Australian culture, or the Australian gay subculture, Priscilla remains iconically Australian, the portrayal of the characters all demonstrating mateship, a very coveted Australian characteristic, and the representation of the "Great Australian Outback", kilometres (thats right, the metric, British spelling) and kilometres of useless desert in every direction. For more proof of the great integration that Priscilla makes of the Gay Culture and Australian Culture, one would benefit from watching the great anticipated performance near the end of the film.

Without boring everyone with literary philosophies, if the characteristics of the film are gay and Australian, then Priscilla wouldn't be as enjoyable as most who have watched it will make of it. What makes Priscilla delightful is the lighthearted nature of the narrative, whether it be the classical "roadtrip" mentality, or dealing with homophobia, Priscilla continues to entertain without the film becoming a drag (haha, a drag x.x <-- me not funny)

Let me now wrap up this review with a congratulations on the three actors who took the chance to take on what is still considered today to be a controversial role (Priscilla was 1994), an excellent performance in AND out of drag, Terence Stamp, cynically delightful, Hugo Weaving, a great representation of gay Australia, and Guy Pearce, flamboyantly... flamboyant!

So now, I can leave you with this insightful review of a great Australian classic and a classic quote;
That's just what this country needs: a cock in a frock on a rock.

Nobody thought this movie was going to be a hit, but it is now one of the classic Australian movies. Great stuff!

i was probably too young to remember it but apparently at the Sydney 2000 closing ceremonies, a giant stiletto heel was mounted on a bus in tribute to priscilla. So the cultural impact of priscilla must be huge. did i mention the musical? lol
