Introduction

Hi everyone! I wanted to build a rain team as I want to try every archetype to build my knowledge as a competitive player. Rain is a archetype I've never tried before, so I wanted to see where it leads me to. That being said, this team is probably hyper standard since I value functionality over creativity, and I'm not very creative. That being said, let's jump in the team.

Teambuilding Process

pelipper.png

Well, we need someone to start the rain and Pelipper is the only viable Rain setter in OU.

kingdra.png

Kingdra is the first option that came in my mind as a Rain abuser.

kabutops.png

Kabutops is the second Rain abuser here and is the Physical counterpart of Kingdra.

Rotom-W is the electric type of my team and it allows me to continue my VoltTurn core with Pelipper to bring Kingdra and Kabutops safely.

ferrothorn.png

Ferrothorn immensely benefits from the Team as Rain weakens fire type attacks, and thus helps the team by checking the electric types this team fears. It also gives Spikes to wear down the opponent's team and thus helps Kingdra and Kabutops to nab some KOes.

By this point I wasn't sure who to add next. However, I went with Alolan Marowak because it gives me Stealth Rock, and Electric immunity due to Lightning Rod, killing opposing Ferrothorns which is a big nuisance to this team and dealing with opposing Ninetales, although Ferrothorn can do it already.

Pelipper @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 196 Def / 64 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Defog
- U-turn
- Roost

So Pelipper here is the main Pokemon of this team. Scald is the stab here which is boosted in rain and is useful when fishing for burns. Defog is pretty necessary in this team due to two member's weakness to Stealth Rock. U-turn is used to bring in a sweeper and Roost is for recovering itself should it get worn down. Pretty standard physically defensive set with Damp Rock to give more turns of rain.

Kingdra @ Choice Specs
Ability: Swift Swim
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Draco Meteor
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam/ Hidden Power [Electric]

Standard Specs Kingdra. Surf is the main stab, Draco Meteor for heavily denting Pokemons resistant to Water, Hydro Pump is a strong stab when the extra power is needed. I'm not sure between the two coverage options. Ice Beam is preferred to get past the bulky Grass types that would otherwise wall Kingdra, However, HP Electric can be used to deal with Mantine which would otherwise completely wall this set.

Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Stone Edge
- Waterfall
- Low Kick

I chose Life Orb over Rockium Z as it provides more immediate power. Swords Dance is for boosting its Attack, after which it can be menacing. Stone Edge and Waterfall are the stabs. Low Kick is used instead of Superpower as I don't want to compromise Kabutops' Attack and Low Kick albeit weak, can OHKO Ferrothorn after a boost. Although Kartana is missed, Marowak is here to deal with it.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split

Rotom-Wash is the glue of the team and is what holds the team together. Hydro Pump is powerful in Rain. Volt Switch gives the team momentum. Will-O-Wisp is useful for crippling Physical attackers and Pain Split is for recovery. Standard defensive set here.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 92 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Protect

Ferrothorn gives the team a backbone in defense. It helps the team so much by providing Spikes since it is pretty efficient in forcing switches. Gyro Ball is useful against fast Pokemons and Fairies. Protect+Leech Seed provides good recovery and chip damage. Protect is also important in scouting for lures.

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Shadow Bone
- Fire Punch
- Bonemerang

Marowak gives the team the utility it needs. Shadow Bone is spammable and hits incredibly hard. Fire Punch is for dealing with Grass types which gives the team trouble. Bonemerang is for the Electric types.

Conclusion

Well, that settles it. Hope you like my team. Please go easy on me if this sucks as it is my first RMT. Any constructive criticism is heavily appreciated.

Hello Train All, you have a pretty cool Rain Team and it has many potential. But, your team's main weaknesses are against Electric Types like Tapu Koko or Rotom-W which can inflict some many damages with their Electric STABs, get some momentum, or, in the case of Rotom-W, spread status against your team. Keldeo and Greninja/Ash-Greninja also gives your team troubles since it can use HP Electric on Pelipper and then spam its Water/Fighting STABs against your team in the case of Keldeo, Or just simply spam Hydro Pump and Dark Pulse and seriously damage your team in the case of Greninja/Ash-Greninja. Stall also gives many troubles to your team since common things on this playstyle like Toxapex, Skarmory or Chansey can wall your team together. Tapu Fini can also be annoying by spamming Nature's Madness and Moonblast and Taunting Ferrothorn. Tapu Bulu takes on Water Type attacks pretty well and then attack with an All-Out-Pummeling or a Superpower against Ferrothorn and Grass moves against the rest of your team.

141.png
Rockium Z > Life Orb : Rockium Z on Kabutops significantly improves your matchup against Stall and Defensive Menaces that give troubles to your team. A Continental crush OHKOes Skarmory at +2 and Tapu Bulu at +0 after Rocks, does around 75% to Rotom-W at +0 (and OHKOes it at +2) and around 65% on M-Sableye and 70% to Tapu Fini. It also gives you an opportunity to hit harder pokemons you shouldn't normally touch with your coverage (2HKOing Keldeo) and allows to an other Pokemon to Revenge Kill them.

598.png
Amoonguss over Ferrothorn : Amoonguss allows your team to check threats like Keldeo and Tapu Bulu better due to its typing as well as neutralizing non Steel Types Setup Sweepers thanks to Clear Smog. It also gives a pokemon able to switch in on pokemons like Pheromosa (it isn't 2HKOed by a Life Orb Ice Beam) and Greninja (without Extrasensory) pretty well. Its Spore puts a pressure to the opponent and also allows to Kabutops to find setup opportunities more easily.

>
105-a.png
Mamoswine over A-Marowak : Mamoswine is fine over A-Marowak because it is also an Electric immunity but also improves your matchup against Tyranitar and Double Weather thanks to its Ground STAB and its Ice Type priority it can do around 35% to M-Charizard Y and beat Landorus-T with its Icicle Crash. With Amoonguss to wall Tapu Fini and Kingdra and Kabutops for opposing Water Types, it finds really well its place on your team. I like Thick Fat on it to take M-Charizard Y better.

M-Scizor over Rotom-W : Since your team was weak to Tapu Lele and M-Metagross, a resistance to them was necessary. M-Scizor is preety good at this role because it can inflict some damages to them with Bullet Punch and U-Turn. In addition, it also gives you a nice check to things like Nihilego and Pheromsa which are troublesome for your team, as well as another priority user to Revenge Kill dangerous threats easier combinated with Swift Swim and something that can setup on Ferrothorn. Having Fire Type Attacks weakened is also pretty good for it.

Importable of the new team :

http://pastebin.com/2HQtHGsq

Alternative Options :

445.png
Offensive SR Garchomp is a pretty good option over Mamoswine due to its superior speed and its ability to check M-Charizard Y better and to pressure Stall
598.png
and
785.png
Ferrothorn is still an option but I think it works better with Tapu Koko. Ferrothorn and Mamoswine help to stack Entry Hazards and Tapu Koko is a Taunt user as well as a Thunder Spammer to apply a great Offensive pressure. The sets : http://pastebin.com/qdNhcFUs.
You don't need Protect on Ferrothorn because it uses a turn of Rain. The set of Tapu Koko is a bit specific but it improves your matchup against Stall (can Taunt Chansey and OHKO M-Sableye with Gigavolt Havoc) and against M-Charizard Y.
473.png
Oblivious is an option on Mamoswine to be immuned to Taunt but you lose the ability to check M-Charizard X and other Fire Types better.

I hope this rate will help you. Good luck ^_^

Thanks man! Since this is was my first rain team, there was bound to be some mistakes. I'll surely try them out.

Important Stuff:
Hi, I don't have too much experience with Rain but your team seems to have trouble with Stall. Therefore, a Shed Shell Tapu Lele with Taunt improves your match-up against Stall immensely (Twisted Spoon is more powerful but it gets trapped by Duggy). Lele also stops your Swift Swimmers from getting revenged by priority.

Extra Stuff:
1) Pheromosa is also a nice option as Quiver Dance allows it to take out stuff like Tangrowth, Gastrodon and Ferrothorn. Or you can use the AoA set with Rapid Spin, freeing a moveslot for Hurricane on Pelipper.

2) Kabutops is OK but you can try out Ludicolo / Omastar / Ash - Greninja as your secondary sweeper. Ludicolo gets rid of Ferrothorn and Gastrodon, Ash-Greninja has coverage and U-Turn, Omastar has crazy power with Waterium-Z.

3) Rain is a HO playstyle so it's going to be weak to certain sweepers or threats. But then, you can deal big damage back with your sweepers.

yo AbrarWasee,

this team looks very weak to stall and is also pressured by common threats such as coil zygarde and double dance landorus-t. the changes i'm suggesting will try to remedy those problems, while also tweaking some movesets to best support your team.

479w.png
->
786.png
| change rotom-w to tapu lele | this change provides the team with a reliable stallbreaker, something that the team desperately needed since the original version has almost no way to play around a matchup when facing generic stall. tapu lele's ability also blocks priority, which is good support for your swift swimmers, enabling them to better handle pokemon such as ash-greninja, mega pinsir, and breloom.

->| change alolan-marowak to landorus-t | defensive landorus-t takes over the stealth rock setting duty that alolan marowak provided, still providing a deterrent to volt switch, while also reliably handling the threats to your team that i listed in the opening sentence. landorus also provides a ground immunity, since one was lost when switching rotom to tapu lele. lastly, landorus also provides another pokemon able to act as a slow pivot, utilising u-turn to bring in your swift swimmers to wreak havoc.

other tweaks/comments
  • 598.png
    | change ferrothorn's moveset to: power whip, knock off, leech seed, spikes | protect is only wasting the limited rain turns that pelipper provides, so i don't think that move best fits this kind of team. power whip is needed to pressure threats such as mega gyarados, keldeo, and manaphy. knock off is a useful utility move on spikes ferrothorn, removing the leftovers from opposing ferrothorn (allowing you to beat them 1v1) as well as defoggers such as tapu fini, leaving them more pressured by the spikes that ferrothorn sets.
  • 141.png
    | change kabutops to rockium z | the ability to weaken bulky water- and grass-types such as tapu fini, keldeo, tangrowth, and amoonguss with +2 continental crush is one of the main reasons kabutops has the niche that it does on rain. rockium z allows kabutops to support kingdra as best it can, easing its time sweeping in the late-game. also consider running aqua jet or rapid spin on kabutops; both moves have useful niches for your team. aqua jet allows kabutops to revenge kill the likes of choice scarf pheromosa, or mega alakazam. rapid spin gives your team hazard removal which allows kingdra to come in healthier, while also supporting your pelipper.
  • 279.png
    | change pelipper's moveset to: hurricane, u-turn, knock off, roost | you mention having scald to fish for scald burns, however, there are a very limited number of occasions in which that would be the best play you could make. the majority of the time pelipper is in it is preferred that is is slowly pivoting into a threat such as kingdra or kabutops via u-turn, or pressuring a grass-type with hurricane. for the most part scald is actually not a very useful move on pelipper, and i feel you'd much prefer the utility of a move such as knock off or ice beam. knock off allows pelipper to remove items from common switchins such as ferrothorn, rotom-w, and tapu fini, providing great support for your swift swimmers. ice beam nails garchomp and zygarde which prevents them from being able to use pelipper as setup fodder.

Yup, this changes makes sense. I'll surely try them out.
