Metagame SV Ubers UU Metagame Discussion (Arceus-Dragon Is Banned)

How good is TR right now? Hopped on and played 2 games, both laddering accounts with TR so wondering the viability.
I think TR is quite playable, especially as there are a lot of incredibly powerful slow attackers that can set TR for themselves (Dialga, NDW). Solgaleo is also a great setter with access to Stealth Rocks and Teleport (and not quite as flawed as either of the Deoxys forms we have ...)

What the hell happened with Zacian. How can you not mention this horrible performance.

Honestly I am shocked it is still the most popular pokemon, considering the new toys. But I am even more surprised to its 30% win rate. That is the lowest I've ever seen a pokemon used this much. I know it fell off because of things like Deoxys who outspeed it, or how Solgaleo is a wonderful check to it, but I didn't think it'd be that bad.

Because at this stage in the game it can realistically be attributed to bad luck... If it was a 30% WR. In reality it was an 11%, an 1-8 record who can only happen less than a 2% of times, and at that point it is indeed no longer just bad luck. Yeah, people were indeed bringing Zacian where they shouldn't.

TR is arguably a dominant strategy. Mainly due to Necrozma dawn wings arguably being overpowered. It sets up trick room for itself, and it deals a lot of damage. It also has Solgaleo like Fluffy mentioned gets trick room + teleport for the safest TRs etter in the tier, especially because it is so god damn tanky (And it deals a lot of damage too)

Good morning, afternoon, evening or whatever.

Have you ever gotten dissapointed lately? Maybe someone broke rules they used to follow and stand by, maybe a company you used to respect released a pile of bland garbage as sequel of its biggest IP (the worst kind of garbage btw), another company made massive cuts from nowhere putting your favorite game of them in life support, a site is failing to deliver the episode they promised to release a week ago, a show you followed ended without a proper conclussion to the main plot, or your mother is doing the same stuff she scolded you for... not that I lived some of those, let alone all.

Jokes aside, because this day we now have the money winners of at the very least 26.25 $, I think I'll do what I did with the later rounds of the tour and publish the teams instead of conclussions of the data. But first, the formality of real raw data.

Honestly, numbers don't really matter anymore outside the fact everyone is Using Dawn Wings; seriously, this is now banworthy territory even with such little data.
Also, Arceus got maximum winrate of 10 as specie and Regieleki is becoming common. Aside from that I'll show the data of the raw teams, because with numbers so low it's kinda easy to do it.

Feels so wrong to not write tilde where it should be as a native spanish speaker. I guess I can give my conclussions about this playstyles, or at least guesses. Btw, Urshifu is Single Strike.

Top players analysis

BigFatMantis: Was what I would describe as a player of Extremes; one game going stall, the other going HO. Is the only player who used Galarian-Weezing, Levitate and physically defensive might add, as well as other picks no one else used in Meowscarada, Arceus-Grass and Blissey. Let's say he just sees competitive through other lenses, considering there's no Arceus-Dark to be found yet suceeded to defeat Dawn Wings twice in a row.

Bouff: Apparently Rasche's sensei and a Vtuber. Is a Toxapex devout, and if you though those words would suggest a defensive playstyle, That's very prejudgical from you... but you're right, is mostly defensive but can play balance at times, maybe better than stall. The other unusual picks were Gastrodon, Mandibuzz and to a lesser extent Dondozo and Galarian Slowking.

Entrocefalo: What many people would describe as an Onga-boonga player, aka Hiper offense. The most interesting thing of this playstyle is the usage of double fire in Ogerpon + Iron Moth, and seems confident enough in that webs team that it was bringed on twice, being the only one in this round of the tournament. Oddly enough not a single pokémon who is exclusive to him, so I can't say is a creative player.

Fusion Flare: Another Hiper offense player, although not someone which team seem quite to date in terms of optimal strategies. Only one to bring up Garchomp and Urshifu-Single-Strike.

LpZ: Another HO player. As unique picks there's Zamazenta-Hero and Arceus Dragon, but in general those teams seem to fail to capture the meta development of the past few weeks.

Pannu: A player who prefers bulk on their creatures, wether that means bulky HO or stall. Can have some peculiar tastes like Raging Bolt or Suicune. Works as its best on bulky offense apparently.

Rasche: Bouff's... What was the opposite of sensei? I think it's disciple. While offensive as a player, it is more inclined to bulky offense in this case, which might explain its sucess to break through Bouff's defenses. The only one who bringed on Solgaleo and Sneasler, without Rillaboom nonetheless, and seems to trust Landorus-Therian and Kyurem-White a lot compared to other players, while using Dawn Wings only once. If I had to guess why the only one it would be due to Dawn Wing's influence.

Vert: Only one to use Arceus-Electric, as well as Deoxys more than once. Yet another Bulky offense player, which seems odd considering the usage of deoxys but it works, so who am I to complain?

Overall, quite a lot of offense, 4 Hyper offense, 2 Bulky offense, 1 stall and one undecided.

Conclussion
This week has been quite... interesting to say the least. That being said none of that concerns Ubers UU, which I think it's for the better considering that, despite being someone who gets involved in constant discussions, I'm not a person who likes conflict; that's why I ended up maining support back in my LoL days. Any conflict I cause is because of my love for intellectual exchange who happens in a discussion and being too passionate at times. I'm also not feeling particularly meme-y for some reason, probably due to not sleeping well lately.

Whatever, here are the links to previous weeks as always.

I guess that's all. Farewell and my lord are ants annoying when they walk in your body.

PS: If you did not got the last one, it's a spanish curse word questioning masculinity in general, as well as a lost girl in that episode; I've seen worse btw, most notably the castle in the sky's name and Juan Corrida. Also some minor edits.

With NDW banned and tier shifts among us, this is going to be a chaotic time to play. What pokemon will rise to the top?

I personally think that Arceus Fire and Mewtwo will rise. Arceus fire has always been good, but now it doesn't need to trade against NDW

Mewtwo now doesn't need shadow ball as coverage so it can expand its repertoire with things like flamethrower, ice beam, etc.

I agree that the era of mewtwo is quickly arriving, unless it rises to regular Ubers. Psystrike plus aura sphere, and then two of the three nasty plot/sub/recover could go absolutely crazy. What works against this besides gholdengo? Lugia?

Solgaleo and Magearna wall it if its not running flamethrower
Arceus Dark walls if its not running focus blast (and if it hits)
Gambit has a guanrateed ohko with Sucker
Tera dark blissey/Clefable will wall it,
I believe Dialga can wall it if its not Focus Blast
Tina can always tank anything it throws at it
Dondozo does surprisingly well since without hitting 2 focus blasts in a row, it doesn't kill it (and even then its only a 50% chance)
Mandibuzz does really well into it

:sv/necrozma-dawn-wings:
With NDW banned, I think a bunch of mons get way better, and a few get worse. Please keep in mind this is mostly speculation.

:mewtwo: Mewtwo
Mewtwo gets wayyy better, no longer needing Shadow Ball for NDW means its 4mss is much less bad. 2 attacks NP with Psystrike+Focus Blast(Aura misses many notable KOS, and it's for cowards) , running Fire Blast for Solg and Mag, etc. are all much more justifiable than they were before. I don't think it'll be too broken though, thanks to Kingambit, Lugia, Gholdengo, Chi-yu, Zacian, etc all beating/checking it.

:giratina: Giratina
NDW was both competition and a counter to Giratina, with NDW's ban Giratina is profiting massively. Now it's definitely the best spin blocker in the tier. It counters M2, Deoxys, and Zama-C, which have all gotten much better, it's got removal in the form of defog, this thing is much better now than it was in the past.

:deoxys: Deoxys
Deo probably gets better, as NDW consistently was able to trade with it, thanks to face tanking a knock off. Trick Room getting nerfed also means one of Deo's worse mu's gets a bit easier.

:zamazenta-crowned: Zamazenta
Zama no longer needs to worry about NDW ruining its day. Though Giratina getting better hurts, Giratina is much less splashable than NDW was, so Zama is now struggling versus fewer ghost types. Darks don't seem to have gotten too much worse, so that's not much of a loss for Zama either.

:zacian: Zacian
Zacian really loves NDW gone. NDW could really easily stomach Zacian's hits, and hit back HARD. Zacian being faster than M2 with M2 getting so much better is a really valuable trait. Deoxys being better isn't amazing for Zac, but it can take a Psycho Boost in a pinch.

:arceus-fire: Arceus-Fire
I think Arc-Fire probably gets the slightest bit worse. NDW no longer being the best spin blocker in the tier means Arceus-Fire's best counter, Giratina, gets significantly stronger and becomes much more common. Additionally, it was one of the better NDW checks in the tier, so it lost a bit of its purpose in the process.

:arceus-dark: Arceus-Dark
Though still definitely top-tier, Darkceus losing its job as an NDW counter hurts it. I don't think it will matter too much, it's still an amazing Pokemon, just a bit worse. Darks are still in high demand with Deoxys, M2, Lugia, and Giratina running around, and a good stall breaker is always nice to have.

I disagree with Arc fire getting worse. If anything, I think it gets significantly better. Arc fire was often needed to trade with NDW, and now it doesn't need to trade. Yes, Giratina getting a lot better hurts it a lot, but that also means hazard control is a lot better. And Arceus-Fire adores hazard control. Trading one counter for the ability to remove hazards + taking away the need to trade with it is an overall positive for Arceus-Fire

Good morning, afternoon, evening or whatever.

First, good news, there's no Dawn Wings in the finals, which should put in test the hability of players to create effective teams. Wonder which kind of meta will this create, but I fear this will create other problems like Palkia-O, because no matter what we do, the tier will be commanded by flawed, biased, corruptable humans, and that fact will never change... Sorry, too into the latest show I've been watching a show Netflix butchered badly in late 2021, and I'm amazed I'm enjoying it so much considering I'm not a fan of Arcane, nor I really align with the political view it suggests, but I guess being 22 minutes instead of 40 and avoid lecturing (unlike the Netflix version) really helps to not be overwhelming or obnoxious.

Anyways and always, here are the teams used in the... SEMIS?! I can't believe how time flies.

Honestly, there's not that much to talk about, but I think I can do a quick recap.
  • Zamazenta-Crowned is more popular than Zacian-Hero. This is probably due to all the dark types that arrived to check Dawn Wings.
  • Arceus is in every single team. While in the last round it was already part of every victory result, here people did not even brought a team without one of those.
  • Galvantula is the most common lead by far, probably because it is by far our best web setter.
  • Regieleki rose up as the best spinner of the tier and an oddly reliable pivot. Glad this thing found a niche.
  • For the observants, there's indeed no Palkia-Origin, a pokémon that is Banworthy according to Leo, isn't present in semis. Same goes for the highly rated Solgaleo.
And because no team was used more than once, I will instead

Profiles of the moneymakers

BigFatMantis: Bigfatmantis is, Like they say in my country, unique and detergent... no, that wasn't a typo. The reason of this today is Meowscarada, Giratina, Weezing-Galar. He might refuse to indulge on using Arceus-Dark like all those other basic girls, but I'll be honest, using Dawn-Wings + Zacian-Hero in every team isn't that special either. In all seriousness, it's just a wild guess to determine how BFM will play to begin with.

Entrocéfalo: I have to admit it's less oonga boonga than I initially imagined, and while still overall agressive, Entrocefalo can show some of brain power via playing more balanced structures, even though it seems webs is its confort style. In terms of uniqueness, we saw Annihilape, Garchomp, Toxapex and Rillaboom, and I think the milk I drank this morning was spoiled, because I though I saw PHYSICAL DAWN WINGS for a moment.

Rasche: Hope this will make your Sensei Bouff proud... Now I feel I need to take a shower. Rasche is, again, a regular offense player, and overall the most creative player of the bunch, using Palafin, Torkoal, Great Tusk, Walking Wake and Ogerpon-Hearthflame in the plays, alongside a general liking for Arceus-Dark, Magearna, Regieleki, Kyurem-White. Rasche was also the least reliant on Dawn Wings to win, which should suggest a higher chance of sucess in the finals where said pokémon won't be available.

Vert: Quite reserved of a player compared to the rest. In terms of playstyle and just like Rasche it is regular offense, with pokémon like Araquanid, Iron Moth and Dialga. Is quite straightforward in terms of playstyle to the point there's next to nothing to talk about as a playstyle, which seems to be a good thing overall considering gimmicks often backfire.

Conclussion

Well, that was an honestly uneventful week. Outside the Dawn Wings ban there's very little to talk about, being mostly speculation of the next meta now that both february is going on. I guess when there's not a lot of issues there's also not a lot of interest. I guess same is on my life, there's not a lot to do, mostly trying to get things on order to get my university title instead of last time where that lack of order screwed me over on the long run.

As always, if you like comparisons you can see the links below for the previous weeks.

Farewell and I hope there's no more delays, because they're obnoxious to plan around.

Good Morning, afternoon, evening or whatever your time is.

This week a Piranha died, the most important Piranha in the world some might say. My thoughs of him? Well, basically the same as Apu though of Homer when he left the minimarket. Still amazed of the 1 digit aproval (That's why you don't switch sides mid-goverment) and the earthquake during the ceremony (hilarious to see foreigners terrified and locals calm). Whatever, I honestly feel ashamed of taking this long considering the results were published yesterday; should have knew skipping my medicine and watching anime would have been bad for my productivity (Konosuba is a hell of a drug).

Well, this would then be the final time I talk about this. I'm incredibly grateful to A Fairy for giving me this chance to learn a bit more about the ins and outs of the tournament.

Rasche: I think I've said this many times but Rasche plays mostly on bulky offense and this week further cements this idea. We see a mix of odd choices in Mandibuzz and Meowscarada, in an otherwise very vanilla bulky offense team... Which might explain the defeat, being too predictable will ruin you. Also... Why 2 Magearnas? I hope it's not the discord meme/fetish but because you like spikes in your steel type pivot.

Vert: First of all, glad you like this tier. Second, your team choices sure are weird, most notably going with the tried and failed sun team, as well as Nasty Plot Deoxys + Orthworm, but I guess you have your reasons for it. It's weird because up until now I always felt you were incredibly average to the point it wasn't too much to talk about, but I guess you can indeed get creative if you want to, and now I can see an inclination for regular offense. As a reminder Iron Treads is no longer available for the tier because it turns out Miraidon is still almost everywhere in Ubers.

Conclussion

Aside of saying congratulations to Vert, If you know me, you would think I would have some sort of commemorial letter talking about how glad I am of covering the tier. But I won't, because I don't like to lie or sweeten my discourses instead of the sometimes cold truth, because I want to be the most genuine I can when writting or talking in public.
The truth is that, while I enjoyed this, working basically as a Fairy's unpaid intern and I genuinely liked to interact with its community, (even though they can be quite unpleasant at times. Looking at you, maiden fetishists), now I need to focus on studies, otherwise I'll end up living as a parasite, and I cannot dedicate both to study and follow throughly tournaments for the time being. I wish I could help more but I want to have a future long-term, although I can't deny this will help me as a data analyst so I would say it's not like this was a complete waste of time. Thank you and I see you soon...

Oh, I almost forgot to leave the links in the description so it's easier to follow.

So that would be it. Farewell and I can't believe the Piranha is getting a proper funeral and being treated as an overall good man considering almost everyone hated him 2 years ago and he was a multimillionaire (You know how young people "love" those); Guess people realized they overreacted on that month and that they made a mistake with choosing an ex-activist as new leader.

PS: Some minor edits like almost always.

while i wait to get top 100, here's my thoughts on the survey guys
:arceus-fire: 5, this thing is seriously unhealthy. it's crazy how little effort this thing shreds through teams that aren't super fat, and it forces bulky offense to run momentum sinks like giratina. i already railed about it in this post so im not gonna add much more other than fuck this thing.
:arceus-electric: 3, havent seen much of it but it seems to struggle with getting on the field and the lack of ability to viably run espeed hurts it. it's kind of a one trick pony but once stupider shit goes i think it could be a bit problematic.
:palkia-origin: 5, apart from arc fire probably the most constraining thing in the builder. aside from arc-grass and solgaleo (both of which have their own opportunity costs) this thing has basically zero viable defensive counterplay and it can easily play around offensive counterplay too, especially with more niche options like scale shot. when the best counterplay to a mon is "hope it misses", you know you have an unhealthy presence.
:mewtwo: 2, its bulk is annoying and it can snowball real fast but the best mon atm is a bulky priority user. like arc-electric could be problematic when the stupider shit goes but for now it's fine.
:zacian: 1, meta is extremely unkind to it atm with more splashable physically defensive counterplay like lando-t and skarmory, and having to pick between hitting arc-fire and the aforementioned skarmory hurts. washed.

UBERS UU BREAK THIS CORE!

To gauge activity, I'll be posting the first week of this project in Metagame Discussion here!!! Reply to this post with your responses!!!

This post is mainly to demonstrate good counters to popular cores in Ubers UU.
What are cores?: Cores are 2-3 Pokemon which particularly synergise well together to achieve a certain goal, more about it can be seen in Finchely's Great Core thread. https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/sv-ubers-uu-great-cores.3731758/
How does this work?: Every week I will post a core of 2-3 Pokemon and rounds will last 7 days to where posters post threats to the core. At the end of the round, I will archive all viable threats listed in the below post and post a new core, highlighting the most effective and creative threats, as well as explaining why others don't make the cut.
1. Please follow up on any reservations! I will allow 48 hours after a reservation to make the post. After 2 days are up, if you have not made your post, then someone else may reserve that Pokemon.
3. Each poster may post up to 2 threats. Each set counts as a different threat.
4. When posting, please explain yourself! Calcs are not necessary, but please list more reasons than something simple like type synergy. Be descriptive so that other posters and I can fully understand your reasoning behind your nomination. Please paste the full set of your threat, moves, EVs, ability, Showdown importable is preferred.
5. Different sets can be posted for the same Pokemon so long as they serve a different purpose from the other set.
6. Be respectful to others. Constructive criticism is allowed, as long as it is done in a proper and non-hostile manner
A threat to the core must check or counter at least one member and cannot be countered by the other. A threat does not necessarily need to be able to switch into both members of the core, but it should be difficult/annoying to switch into for the members of the core. Of course, the biggest threats can counter both members of the core.

> Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
> Addtionally, Pokemon A also checks Pokemon B if, Pokemon A is able to deal with a particular set of Pokemon B, and Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, while Pokemon B is using that particular set, then Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
> Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Roaring Moon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Iron Head

This roaring moon set is a great problem for that core. Knock off is a guaranteed OHKO on Mewtwo, it resists both of Chi-yu's stabs and outspeeds it, and while it can struggle with Hattarene, using U turn into it or Tera Steel Iron head will deal a sizable chunk to it.

Blissey @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Natural Cure
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Seismic Toss
- Calm Mind
- Soft-Boiled

tera dark and you simply jsut win. cm boosting alongside hatt and sball eventually wins . mewtwo and chi-yu can't do anything to tera dark, even with tera.

I believe Shaymin-Sky should be unbanned, the metagame was vastly different when it was and I argue it still wasn't even overpowered. Being one of the two council members who voted to not ban, I didn't believe this Pokemon's Serene Grace in combination with it's common STABs was broken at the time and still don't. Even if you think it was previously broken, the amount of Pokemon that have entered since then have completely altered the metagame and we have many repercussions against Shaymin-Sky which I think are important to address.

Why unban Skymin? What does it bring to the tier?
Shaymin-Sky fills two valuable roles of being a Flying-type and a Grass-type, two uncommon typings which are good in the metagame. Particularly, with it's moveset and ability it is capable of dealing with the stall playstyle which has found itself being a lot better than previously. With options like Seed Flare dropping Special Defense and being super effective against Quagsire and Dondozo, Air Slash to aim for a flinch or two on a Pokemon so they can't heal off your damage and allow you to finish them off as well as Leech Seed + Substitute for recovery and consistent damage.

Edit: I forgot it had Earth Power though this is doing minimal damage to Solgaleo for example and if you're not predicting a switch in a Knock Off will severely ruin your gameplan or you'll be hit hard by Sunsteel Strike.

How do I beat Skymin?
Beating Shaymin-Sky can be done with ease in my opinion, this Pokemon is no more threatening to build around than the now banned Arceus-Fire or even the threats still in the tier like Zacian, Palkia-Origin, Mewtwo and Deoxys. Many Pokemon in the tier of Ubers UU benefit from a wide coverage or particularly immense stats whilst Shaymin-Sky runs purely STABs so can't hit the many Steel-types in the tier such as Magearna, Dialga and Solgaleo and doesn't have the speed stat to outspeed other offensive Pokemon like Regieleki, Deoxys, Zacian, Zamazenta, Mewtwo, Spectrier and Zamazenta-Crowned. The amount of offensive Pokemon outspeeding and defensive Pokemon able to take hits from it without a scratch make me wonder why people hate this Pokemon so much, I genuinely think if Shaymin-Sky is unbanned it'll sit around B+/A- rank which makes no sense for something not allowed in the tier.
