Thanks to everyone for being a part of VotW! This week's winners are...
Congratulations, your sets will be added to the Hall of Fame! Our next week's threat may or may not be the cousin of one of last week's winners - with a recent climb in the VR rankings to S-, what stands in the way of Galarian Slowking?
Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 144 SpA / 96 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psyshock
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower
- Surf
Slowking-Galar is one of the most potent defensive checks in OU, wielding an Assault Vest to enhance its already significant special bulk and allow it to invest in its Special Attack. This Pokemon can fire off powerful Psyshocks and Sludge Bombs to hit special and physical checks alike, with Flamethrower providing coverage to threaten Steel-types with super effective damage, while Surf is a strong option that targets certain Fire- and Ground-types that would otherwise be able to switch in on it with impunity. This combines well with a Tera type of Water, a great neutral defensive typing that gives it an even better matchup into weather teams that already find it hard for their special attackers to muscle through it. Can anything step up to the king?

Counter:
Ursaluna @ Flame Orb
Level: 100
Adamant Nature
Tera Type: Normal
Ability: Guts
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe
- Facade
- Headlong Rush
- Fire Punch
- Swords Dance
Surf never OHKOs, and Facade always does:
144+ SpA Tera Water Slowking-Galar Surf vs. 116 HP / 0 SpD Ursaluna: 318-374 (73.9 - 86.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after burn damage
252+ Atk Guts Ursaluna Facade (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 16 Def Tera Water Slowking-Galar: 468-552 (118.7 - 140.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
It is though. For the purposes of this challenge, the definition of a counter is this:I don't think ursaluna is a counter
Ursaluna meets this definition. Worst case scenario is Glowking teras and clicks Surf on the switch, at which point Ursaluna takes ~93% from a high roll on the hit plus burn chip then outspeeds and OHKOs on the next turn. Obviously, that interaction is pretty unrealistic, and unrepresentative of both mon's role in the game- among other things Ursaluna isn't a long term answer to anything, Ursaluna is highly unlikely to be switched in to a Surf and takes the other attacks quite well, hazards exist, hitting whatever Glowking switches to is still Ursa winning the interaction, etc. Of course, for the purpose of this challenge that only matters during voting, what matters now is just the technical definition , which Ursaluna meets.Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
Yep. Sorry for not mentioning it.We can vote for 2 checks and 2 counters, right? Numbers look right for this.
Ursaluna can outdamage Roost.Counter:
Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Def / 96 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost
- Body Press
- Iron Defense
- Spikes
Skarmory actually tanks the Guts boosted hits surprisingly well.
252+ Atk Guts Tera Normal Ursaluna Facade (140 BP) vs. 160 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 151-178 (48.5 - 57.2%) -- 46.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Guts Tera Normal Ursaluna Fire Punch vs. 160 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 162-192 (52 - 61.7%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Guts Tera Normal Ursaluna Fire Punch vs. +2 160 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 82-98 (26.3 - 31.5%) -- 23.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
Note that Skarmory can use ID to prevent getting 2HKO'ed, then Roost back up since Ursa's attacks do less damage.
Skarmory can then click Body Press to delete Ursaluna. After the 2nd Iron Defense click it's a guaranteed KO without Tera.
Since you outspeed, If Ursaluna uses Swords Dance on the switch, you can click Iron Defense twice and immediately KO.
+2 252+ Def Tera Fighting Skarmory Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Tera Normal Ursaluna: 578-684 (144.1 - 170.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Using defensive berries (Occa berry) sucks.
