Canonincally hailed as containing the power of the sun, Volcarona boasts being one of “[this generation’s] most dangerous sweepers,” as the first line of every Smogon Analysis ifor each generation of OU it has been a part of. With a design partly inspired by the Kaiju Mothra from the Godzilla franchise, Volcarona’s usage of Terastalization has seen to it living up to its terrifying heritage, capable of clearing entire teams after a single boost. If you guess its Tera type wrong, you just might not live to tell the tale.

A nice hard check here, if Azu gets in all it has to do is click Aqua Jet, and say goodbye to your Volcarona, which means it can never really try to set up since the threat of the revenge kill is always there. Azumarill can also hard switch in if Volcarona isn't boosted up since is only likely to get OHKO'd by Tera Ground Tera Blast when Volc is at +2, and only 25% of the time, but otherwise it can take the hit, especially if it's not clicking Tera Blast. EVs are more for the team setting, speed EVs get the jump on Corviknight.

I had another idea in mind, but I'm gonna hold onto that a bit longer, anyways, back to the topic at hand

Volc can't really do shit against you, meanwhile

0 Atk Tyranitar Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 592-700 (190.3 - 225%) -- guaranteed OHKO
But this is too easy, and tera ground covers that
0 Atk Tyranitar Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Ground Volcarona: 74-87 (23.7 - 27.9%) -- 91% chance to 4HKO

But, with Avalanche in our arsenal, he gets smacked either way

This is NOT INCLUDING your own tera. Once you tera, its ALL OVER. (5 HKO, pathetic).

Ability: Moxie
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

Gyarados is a check. Its typing gives it a resistance to both of Volcarona's STABs and an immunity to Ground, allowing it to easily switch in on an unboosted Tera Ground Volcarona's attacks and threaten an OHKO with Waterfall. Even if Volcarona does set up, it needs multiple Special Attack boosts to even have a chance to 2HKO, and that can be difficult to achieve if you're at least somewhat proactive.

It's worth noting that your own Tera Blast can also threaten an OHKO if Volcarona hasn't Tera'd yet, but Tera Flying takes away your Fire resistance, making that somewhat risky.

Tera Bug Ceruledge is really underrated in the current meta. The lack of strong flying type pokemons and the only relevant one being Corviknight which cannot beat you without tera , makes this set something to keep in mind. Bitter Blade does 54-60% without any atk investments.
0 Atk Ceruledge Bitter Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 168-198 (54 - 63.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Tera Bug Ceruledge Bitter Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Ground Volcarona: 168-198 (54 - 63.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Tera Ground Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 200+ SpD Tera Bug Ceruledge: 171-202 (48.3 - 57%) -- 92.6% chance to 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Tera Ground Volcarona Tera Blast vs. 252 HP / 200+ SpD Tera Bug Ceruledge: 76-90 (21.4 - 25.4%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO

Volcarona fails to 2HKO with a +1 boost (due to bittler blade healing) , and you can 2HKO volc in return while also healing some of the damage taken. If your opponent has exhausted their tera on something else, you don't even need to tera against volc.

- Brave Bird/Wave Crash/U-turn

Lives boosted Bug Buzz into Tera Ground after rocks with a little investment.
+1 252 SpA Tera Ground Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 64 SpD Assault Vest Quaquaval: 88-104 (28.2 - 33.4%)
+1 252 SpA Tera Ground Volcarona Tera Blast vs. 0 HP / 64 SpD Assault Vest Quaquaval: 157-186 (50.4 - 59.8%)
Speed allows it to beat Meow after one use of aqua step, one of the fastest non-boosted mons.
It resists common priority sucker punch.
252+ Atk Supreme Overlord 5 allies fainted Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Quaquaval: 117-138 (37.6 - 44.3%)

Calcs against bulkier mons
+1 252+ Atk Quaquaval Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 172+ Def Amoonguss: 400-472 (92.5 - 109.2%)
+1 252+ Atk Quaquaval Ice Spinner vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 282-334 (87.3 - 103.4%)
+1 252+ Atk Quaquaval Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 211-250 (52.8 - 62.6%)
+1 252+ Atk Quaquaval Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 156+ Def Garganacl: 390-462 (96.5 - 114.3%)

Does not require much investment for the oneshot with Aqua Step, the standard bulk up set could run a little more attack to guarantee it. But this requires switching in on the quiver dance.

Of course this is hardly a good general volc check because giga drain and psychic are so common...

With Gyarados, not only can you easily switch it in on the quiver, you can then choose to either ohkoe or setup a ddance if you wish to.
Additionally due to all of volcs moves being resist, switching in on it even when it is already plus onez you will still live and be able to ohkoe it back.
Additionally Gyarados loves to run lum berry as it hates burns, so this means that if even if you get flame bodied, it will remove the burn and you will be +1 from moxie.

Sylveon @ Leftovers
Level: 100
Calm Nature
Tera Type: Psychic/Fairy Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
- Hyper Voice
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Wish

:Sylveon: the lovable little Eeveelution may seem innocent at first but, make no mistake it can face off against some of the biggest threats in OU. This is a little variation on the Calm Mind, Wish Sylveon set, just replacing Protect with Psyshock.

:Sylveon: has amazing special bulk alongside its decent HP can tank any hit from :Volcarona: amazingly and switch in practically for free.

252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 91-108 (23 - 27.4%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sylveon: 136-162 (34.5 - 41.1%) -- 64.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

There are two possibilities here. Firstly, Volcarona can use Flamethrower on switch in, dealing pitiful damage. Sylveon can just start to spam Wish and Calm Mind and set up all over Volcarona. If Volcarona Quiver Dances on switch in, you can still just Calm Mind and Wish into the sunset. Tera Ground doesn't really make a difference here, if anything it just makes Hyper Voice do more. If it devolves into a setup faceoff, you just get up a few stages and kill with Psyshock.

+2 4 SpA Sylveon Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 178-210 (57.2 - 67.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+6 4 SpA Sylveon Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 355-418 (114.1 - 134.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You can even go Tera Psychic to secure the Psyshock OHKO at +3 while still avoiding the OHKO from +4 Bug Buzz.

+4 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. +3 252 HP / 252+ SpD Tera Psychic Sylveon: 218-258 (55.3 - 65.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+3 4 SpA Tera Psychic Sylveon Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 331-391 (106.4 - 125.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

This set not only beats this specific variant of Volcarona but also practically every other variant except the Tera Steel version.

This set is also really nice for luring in poison type walls such as Toxapex and Clodsire.

+2 4 SpA Tera Psychic Sylveon Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 192+ Def Toxapex: 210-248 (69 - 81.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Tera Psychic Sylveon Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Clodsire: 282-332 (60.9 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It also beats offensive threats such as Dragapult, Great Tusk, Roaring Moon and Walking Wake pretty handily even without setup.

Poor Mence. It used to be almost completely superior to DNite back in Gens 3 & 4, but now its always seen as the worse one :/

Thankfully, it still has one useful trait; the ability to speed tie with Volcarona. Dragon Dance lets it maintain that speed tie (or breach it if Volc stops setting up), and the EVs give it the bulk it needs to set up safely.

Mence completely walls Tera Ground Volc. The best it can do is hit Mence with Tera Blast while it's yet to Terastallize, but...

A.) That defeats the purpose of Tera Blast as a whole, and
B.) Even if it does make the play, Volc needs to get all the way up to +5 before it even has a chance to OHKO, or +6 to secure it

+5 252 SpA Volcarona Tera Blast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 377-444 (95.9 - 112.9%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Meanwhile, Mence only needs 2 DDs to OHKO Tera Ground Volc with Dual Wingbeat, or 3 for EQ if you wanna play it safe

+2 0 Atk Salamence Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Ground Volcarona: 318-374 (102.2 - 120.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+3 0 Atk Salamence Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Ground Volcarona: 330-389 (106.1 - 125%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You can even potentially use this Mence to scout for the Tera-Type Volc actually has, since it'll be forced to Terastallize if it wants the slightest chance to survive Dual Wingbeat on its own right

0 Atk Salamence Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 316-376 (101.6 - 120.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Wow! With a total of 14 submissions, this marks our most involved round of submissions yet. A huge thank you to all of you who participate in this project on a weekly basis!

The amount of viable submissions has been slowly increasing over the last few weeks. For starters, I'll also now be recording the runner-up for both checks and counters in the hall of fame; to help manage the increased amount of submissions, I'm going to slightly be changing the formula for the voting process!
  • You can now vote for two checks and two counters each, ranked by preference.
  • Your first choice will count as two votes, while your second choice will count as one.
  • Example:
    • test.png
  • As always, you do not have to vote four times, but please try to recognize deserving submissions!
  • If you have any questions, feel free to DM me!

With that stuff all out of the way, here are your submissions for Week 11! You can vote for two checks and two counters each, in order of preference. As always, please remember you cannot vote for your own submissions!

* was submitted as a check, but meets the criteria to be considered a counter

Voting ends Wednesday April 12th at 23:59 GMT-3!
