[OVERVIEW]
Lombre's typing and well-rounded stats distinguish it in multiple roles as a rain sweeper and special wall. However, Lombre is generally overshadowed on multiple levels of both of its roles. Lombre's rain sweeper set faces competition as a sweeper from Gloom, Beedrill, and Wartortle for their more explosive power, as Lombre can still struggle to overpower special walls like Noctowl and Delcatty. These special walls and others, including Porygon and Gloom, give Lombre steep competition with their access to more utility moves and different defensive typings. Lombre's typing also provides weaknesses to Flying, Poison, and Bug, which leaves its offensive set prone outside of rain and its defensive set vulnerable to offensive threats like Doduo, Beedrill, and Seaking running Megahorn.

[SET COMMENTS]
Lombre's unorthodox defensive typing and relatively good special bulk carve a niche for it as a check it to specially offensive Water-types like Corsola, Clamperl, and Wartortle, and it can hit them back hard with STAB Hidden Power Grass. Lombre's Water typing also comes in handy offensively against Fire-type special attackers like Ponyta and Quilava, while its special bulk helps it handle Electric-type special attackers like Magnemite, Chinchou, and Flaaffy. Toxic puts special walls like Porygon and Lileep on a timer, and it forces other walls like Delcatty and Noctowl to become passive by using Heal Bell or Rest, respectively. Leech Seed is an alternative way of chipping down Lombre's foes that punishes Poison-types like Ariados and Beedrill while adding to Lombre's overall longevity. Synthesis shores up Lombre's longevity, which is especially important when Clamperl is such a potent special wallbreaker. Alternatively, Protect synergizes with Toxic and Leech Seed to further wear down Lombre's foes, and Lombre benefits from the additional free turns of Leftovers recovery. Lombre may invite in Choice Band users like Volbeat, Aipom, and Seaking due to its passivity, and Protect can help it scout these foes before switching to an appropriate teammate. 56 Speed EVs give Lombre enough Speed to outrun Rhyhorn that have maximum Speed investment as well as most Drowzee sets so that Lombre can outspeed it and inflict Leech Seed or Toxic.

Lombre tends to fit bulkier teams to reinforce defensive cores against special attackers, particularly Water-types. Clerics like Mightyena, Flaaffy, and Delcatty help mitigate Lombre's vulnerability to status, especially Toxic. Magnemite and Poison-types like Ariados, Koffing, and Gloom can absorb Toxic for Lombre, and the first two can take on Poison-types that would threaten it. Physical walls like Corsola and Tropius can form solid defensive cores with Lombre by taking on physical attackers it struggles against, such as Aipom and Meditite, respectively. Said physical walls can also take advantage of Lombre scouting physical attackers with Protect and punishing them with Toxic and Leech Seed as they switch in.

Other Options
=============

Lombre's specially defensive set struggles to fit Ice Beam over its status moves, but it can surprise Tropius that thought it was safe to take advantage of Lombre. Rain Dish is an option over Swift Swim for specially defensive Lombre for extra recovery against rain sweepers like Horsea, Wartortle, and opposing Lombre.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Poison-types**: A healthy Ariados can survive a rain-boosted Hydro Pump from rain sweeper Lombre and OHKO it Sludge Bomb. Beedrill and Koffing also hit Lombre hard with their Poison-type moves and switch into Hidden Power Grass and Toxic from its specially defensive sets, but both of them risk being OHKOed by Lombre's rain sweeper set.

**Physical Attackers**: Aipom and Meditite outspeed and OHKO Lombre's defensive set, but they're outsped and OHKOed by Lombre's rain sweeper set in rain. Doduo and Volbeat even have Quick Attack to pick off Lombre's rain sweeper set if it's weakened.

**Special Wallbreakers**: Sunny Day Quilava can overpower and 2HKO Lombre with Fire Blast, while Abra can overwhelm specially defensive Lombre after boosting with Calm Mind. However, special wallbreakers like them are beaten by Lombre's rain sweeper set.

**Special Walls**: Noctowl, Porygon, and Delcatty can PP stall rain sweeper Lombre's rain turns and Hydro Pump PP, and they can generally sit on its defensive set.
