Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

If it wasn't for the PS3 jailbreak fiasco I'd say Sony is the embodiment of "doing it right."

It's been rumored for awhile (with various previews here and there), but the recent Super Bowl commercial brought the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, aka the "Playstation Phone," to the full attention of the public. It's essentially an Android based smartphone with a PSP Go-esque slideout controller. Side-by-side picture comparison:

The Xperia Play beats out the specs of the PSP Go by a longshot, though time has an impact on that. The article above gives all the details known at the time so I won't echo those here.

What really piqued my curiosity was the name of the device; why is the device branded with Xperia and not Playstation? Add this to codename NGP which lacks any sort of Playstation branding (at the moment) and something is amiss. During my news searches I came across this article which shares my concerns, and the article concludes that it appears that Sony could be stepping away from the name all together, or rather, changing what exactly the Playstation brand means. It would be a long transition but given the lack of branding and their recent partnership with Steam, I wouldn't discredit the idea of Sony moving Playstation from a product to a service.

It's pretty obvious Sony leaked this stuff on purpose. Sony is completely capable of sealing any and every secret if they really wanted to. Example: Every E3 ever.

Superbowl reveal? Hype for PSP2? You clever motherfuckers. +1.

Anyways. I'm not very interested in the Playstation Phone. I'm gonna get the NGP on day 1. I don't see the point of having an obselete gaming system along with it.

New threads for different products.

The Xperia Play is likely named that way because:

1) Sony Ericsson believes the Xperia brand is strong or Sony believes the PlayStation brand would be sullied by this product
or
2) PlayStation isn't actually as large a part of this phone as it should be to be branded PlayStation

Honestly? This is too little too late. I would have been interested in this device a while ago, but there's too much on the market now for it to compete. I'm going to grab my Dell Venue Pro once it's out on Rogers and call it a day.
