Premise:
Every Pokémon can learn almost any move, once.

Background:
The idea is based on the signature move Sketch, which allowed Smeargle to permanently copy almost any move by replacing its own moveslot. While Smeargle was erased is currently unavailable in Gen 8, the larger idea remains the same.

This is a revitalization to the defunct OM, of the same name, from Gen 7. One of the most significant parts of this meta is that many Pokémon are just short of the moveset they need to be excellent. What if Heatran had recovery? What if Alakazam had better coverage? What if Slaking Regigigas had Skill Swap? What if Toxapex had Body Press? Sketchmons is the format that enables these ideas and encourages players to use Pokémon in ways that they often aren’t given the chance to.

Sketchmons is a format that rewards players for both their creativity and for their knowledge of otherwise oft-forgotten moves/Pokémon.

Each move can only be Sketched once across an entire team.
Moves not usable on cartridge (Pursuit, et al.) cannot be Sketched.
Max Moves and G-Max Moves cannot be Sketched.

I've been super hyped for this meta to come out and have been building tons of sets in anticipation. Here are some fun ones of varying quality and one super broken one.
Broken first!
:ss/swoobat:
Swoobat @ Throat Spray
Ability: Simple
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Clangorous Soul
- Stored Power
- Roost
- Heat Wave

This kind of speaks for itself. It gets +2 everything and +4 SpA in one turn, which comes with the fun bonus of a free 260 BP STAB. It really has nothing else going for it but does it need to? Bring a Dark type or Prankster Haze mon, Unaware isn't cutting it.

Pls ban.

I'll post calcs when I'm home, and more sets.

+4 252+ SpA Swoobat Stored Power (260 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Blissey: 757-892 (106 - 124.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+4 252+ SpA Swoobat Stored Power (260 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 625-736 (88.9 - 104.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+4 252+ SpA Swoobat Stored Power (260 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 332-391 (84.2 - 99.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+4 252+ SpA Swoobat Stored Power (260 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Unaware Clefable: 255-300 (64.7 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+4 252+ SpA Swoobat Stored Power (260 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Pheromosa: 4184-4926 (1478.4 - 1740.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

EDIT: Some initial thoughts on what the meta is likely to look like-

We have some extremely extremely powerful potential sweepers in this metagame. There's no way I'm going to hit on them all right now because there's just the possibility of so many. I tried to keep it to just actually broken ones for now. I had some other interesting ones (which might be broken) but didn't feel the need to include them.

The two main things I didn't really mention are defensive mons, because honestly they're just going to get blown away at first I M O and revenge killers / speed control mons that don't use priority... because they're boring. Slap a Choice Scarf on a decently fast wallbreaker and bam. Maybe this is why all my teams are so slow.

NOW...

What this tier needs, IMO, from an immediate perspective-
V-Create, Kartana, and Porygon-Z are going to be super unhealthy no matter what and should be quickbanned sooner rather than later. Extreme Speed and Cinderace also really have to go, but are likely a little lower priority, especially since Espeed will likely be holding a fragile and set-up heavy meta together for awhile. Swoobat or Clangorous Soul (hint it's Swoobat) needs a ban too, as does Thousand Arrows.

There are likely to be some more setup sweepers that are broken, so I suspect that either some mons or moves will need to be restricted to calm that down too, although that's not helpful because I don't know what exactly.

I perfectly understand if the meta leaders prefer to wait on any and all of this until we have some more gameplay to base it off of, hence why I didn't insist on it at the submissions stage, but I suspect everything here will happen sooner or later.

I noticed the initial banlist is quite conservative. I think a bunch of things will soon show themselves to be broken (GLACIAL LANCE, EXTREME SPEED, VCREATE, Cinderace in general and many more), but until then here's 2 teams I built like a month or 2 ago to play some games w ALD as well as an interesting set. I built this with the assumption that Glance would be restricted so I had Icicle Crash instead, but Glance is a massive upgrade.

1) Spikes Zera + Glance Cinderace balance :zeraora: :garchomp: :corviknight: :tapu fini: :cinderace: :amoonguss:
The idea here is using Zera as an Ash Greninja and spiking on switches, while capitalizing on the fact that Lando/Chomp are shared Ace+Zera checks so a timely Glance can delete them and thus open up Zeraora as a wincon.

2) Glance Zera + I win button spam HO :landorus-therian: :mew: :zeraora: :polteageist: :urshifu-rapid-strike: :volcarona:
Very simple HO team. Mew is the lead, Zera can be a wincon due to the speed tier, while everything else clicks setup and tries to win. Secret Sword Teapot was most impressive, it felt like this mon had no defensive answers since everything but Mandibuzz/GMoltres dies to Ball/SP/SSword coverage.

It's quite possible that these teams are bad, I mainly wanted to get some discussion going.

And last one of a million Cinderace sets:
:SS/Cinderace:

Cinderace @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Libero
EVs: 16 HP / 252 Atk / 240 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bulk Up
- High Jump Kick
- Extreme Speed
- Sucker Punch

Espeed/Sucker is a great dual prio combo, with HJK hitting everything that resists both at least neutrally.

:sm/landorus_therian:
Lando-T looks like a huge threat as per usual—between Thousand Arrows and Dragon Ascent, it basically gets to pick and choose its counters, and of course it can pull off defensive sets well too by sketching a recovery move.

:sm/rillaboom:
Rillaboom @ Choice Band
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Grassy Glide
- Wood Hammer
- V-create
- U-turn

being able to instantly delete the bulky steels that usually beat Rillaboom sounds like a godsend. Of course, V-Create totally could end up broken likt TNM already said, but there's still a ton of other options available (Pyro Ball, Sacred Fire, Fire Lash etc).

and then here's a bunch of relatively bulky mons without recovery that might really appreciate having it

I have a bunch more stowed away, but these are some starting ideas (of varying quality) if you want to see the kind of stuff you can do! I'm sure I haven't even scratched the surface!

Now this takes me back...I still have my old teams so I edited some of them to work in this current meta.
https://pokepast.es/f6f9d8da06cc7c33
Concerning the watch list, it is hard to say what is a problem without playing but based on past experiences, extreme speed isn't the most healthy move for the meta but it is a great glue that holds the meta together so all the other broken stuff in the meta aren't as broken (sticky webs, p-z, any speed boosting set-up sweeper). Mons-wise probably kartana and p-z should be the first to go (keep p-z if boomburst goes imo).

Yo, I remember playing this last gen, nice to see this back.

:ss/kartana:

Kartana @ Life Orb
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Sacred Sword
- Knock Off

Shift Gear is banned, and I don’t expect Kartana to last for long, so we’ll have to make haste and use it with DD before it gets the boot. There’s not a lot to say here honestly, Kart has always been craving for a boosting move that isn’t SD, and Sketchmons doesn’t disappoint. Click DD and watch things fall as they try to switch into Kart, to no avail.

Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

- Filler

Name one mon that can switch into this safely. I’ll wait.

Anyway, SwSh was very kind to Blace, as it removed Pursuit and added HDB, solving two of Blace’s biggest problems. I seriously don’t expect this mon to last long either, nothing walls Secret Sword Blace outside of maybe Pex and slower teams will live in terror of this. You really only need three moveslots for Blace to start wrecking shit, so you can fit stuff like Knock for the pink blobs or CM to boost even further.

Edit: lmao looks like I overestimated this thing, check drampa’s reply below

:ss/glastrier:

Glastrier @ Heavy-Duty Boots

EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe

- Megahorn / Swords Dance / High Horsepower

Wanted to give this mon a shoutout. Here, Glastrier can now set its own TR and act as Stakataka II. Stak’ll probably get used more often then this due to its nuclear Gyro Balls, but lack of a 4x Fighting and Ground weakness gives Glas a definite pro over Stak.

We had a semi-on-your-honor (since we don't have a validator for Sketch yet) few games in OMM and V-Create didn't even really make it until the end of that first "practice tour". For very obvious reasons, it was too powerful - the Blaziken set and the (of all things) Malamar set were big sweepers. We could only see it getting worse when it would have gotten used for coverage and general nuking. Lance was a similar story - made it not too far past that first tour before being too much - Zera with Lance was a terror in itself.

BP Scrub and I have been trying to plug the holes in the maelstrom that is Sketch as we see them - we've obviously been trying to avoid making too many bans just on instinct, especially because it's hard to tell exactly what's broken.

Cinderace is definitely a noteworthy example: is it nutty because it's Cinderace or is it nutty because STAB ESpeed and the like? If we ban the problem moves, will Cinderace calm down?

With the modularity that Sketchmons provides, this will be tough; please send challenges to either of us (or anyone else and feel free to show some replays!) and we're happy to bring down the banhammer as more surfaces!

If I were to make guesses based purely on my gut instinct, these would be my expected bans:
Cinderace
Kartana
Swoobat
Tarrows
Transform
Wicked Blow

With coinflip odds on:
Extreme Speed (obviously super good but really powerful for keeping setup in check)
Leppa Berry (widespread access to Recycle, et al. sounds like a potential problem)
Magearna (it's Mage but no set has actually shown up to be a problem yet)
Porygon-Z (Extremely strong for obvious reasons but the common usage of prio and ghost types/resists has stopped it from showing any real work so far)
Sleep moves (something about No Guard/Compound Eyes sleep makes me nervous)

This is obviously all speculation, and I could be very wrong in any number of directions. My goal is to fan the hammer more than swing it, at least until there's some evidence, you know?

Here's two funny mons:

:lurantis:
Lurantis @ Assault Vest
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
any nature
- V-create Fleur Cannon / Draco Meteor / Close Combat / Overheat / Dragon Ascent
- Leaf Storm
- Superpower
- Knock Off

Very simple concept: Lurantis with V-create more contrary moves. It can get plenty of stat boosts with its other moves too, see Leaf Storm and Superpower.
Edit: rip v-create LOL

:registeel:
Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Iron Defense
- Shore Up
- Body Press
- Thunder Wave

A major reason why this mon isn't a defensive deity is because of no access to recovery outside of Rest. Enter Sketchmons, where it gets access to recovery, along with being able to set up using Iron Defense. Then, it abuses its astronomical defense with Body Press, and can paralyze foes in its way using Thunder Wave.

Oh we're posting funny mons?

:alakazam:
Alakazam @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Mind Blown
- Psystrike/Psychic/Photon Geyser
- Nasty Plot
- Recover/Psychic/Photon Geyser
Magic Guard nullifies the recoil from Mind Blown so now you can blow past Steel types not named Heatran with a 150 BP Fire move instead of not doing anything because Focus Blast missed. Psystrike is an upgrade over Psyshock but you can run alternative moves depending on what your team needs (Psychic might still be good simply because of PP difference.)

:thundurus:
Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / idk put the rest somewhere
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Nature Power
- Thunderbolt
- Oblivion Wing
Anyone remember that time in VGC where a Whimsicott used Prankster Nature Power to gain priority attacks and even used a Z-Move only to get Gen 7'd by a Dark Type? No? Anyway Thundurus gets Priority Tri-Attack thanks to Prankster and also now has a Flying STAB to use. Not as good as ESpeed sadly but it is something different and could be pretty scary late-game if everything else already wasn't. Time will tell.

Terrakion seems cool in this meta. Espeed resist on a strong attacker seems useful, and it has a great combination of stabs and good enough natural movepool to where it can slot coverage/utility options with its sketched move.

:ss/terrakion:
Terrakion @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance/Dragon Dance
- Stone Edge
- Close Combat
- Extreme Speed/Coverage

Basically just sd terrakion, but with strong priority. Alternatively, you can run dragon dance for the speed boost and slot in a coverage move like megahorn, pjab/iron head, eq, or crunch, depending on what you want to hit. You could probably also runa substitute set with leftovers

Terrakion @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Coverage
- Spikes/U-turn

Scarf terrakion featuring spikes to capitalize off of forced switches or u-turn for momentum. Again you have a decent amount of coverage options that you can slot in.

Terrakion @ Choice Band
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Extreme Speed/Spikes/U-turn
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Coverage

Pretty similar to the scarf set above, but with espeed as an option for strong priority.

If espeed ever goes, accelerock is an alternative priority move on the sd and band sets.

If Fishious rend is banned even on native users then there is no need in keeping Dracovish banned, am I right?
Originally I honestly wasn't going to touch this but in the odd chance you aren't trolling:

First thing is, Rend is still legal: if Vish were legal, it could use Rend. Also Arctovish exists

Assuming that's not what you were getting at with your question:

It might not seem it on the surface, but this is ultimately still a complex ban (which we try to avoid - If you're not sure why, feel free to ask and I can help explain that too).

The formal reasoning why it is a complex ban is a little fickle, but in terms of the general logical construction, saying "Vish is not too strong as long as it doesn't have rend" is following the same framework as saying "Volcarona isn't too strong [for UU] as long as it doesn't have Quiver Dance".

I hope that helps clear things up! If it doesn't, I can also link you a more complete explanation!

Oh hello. Think you forgot to put this guy on the banlist chief.

452.png

Thanks to Sniper, Drapion hits ridiculously hard with Wicked Blow, somewhat harder than Urshifu does, in fact. The secondary Poison typing complements it well and lets it fight Clefable very naturally. Neat tricks like Earthquake (for Magearna), Knock Off for a safer PP-conserving STAB, Toxic Spikes, and SD or double dance options give it some wiggle room. It's overall weaker than Urshifu, since Urshifu will probably be running wacky stuff like DD or No Retreat or whatever but if the meta evolves to a point where the higher initial power is needed this thing could be fun.

252 Atk Choice Band Sniper Drapion Wicked Blow vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon on a critical hit: 222-262 (52.8 - 62.3%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu Wicked Blow vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon on a critical hit: 190-225 (45.2 - 53.5%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

This is the flagship calc imo, got damn that is satisfying. Lastly, Drapion seems fun to meme with using Acupressure + Power Trip.

675.png

Here's another mon that outdamages Urshifu with Wicked Blow thanks to Iron Fist. Probably only worth using if Urshifu gets banned though due to a bad Speed stat. Even so Drapion would still have a significant Speed advantage over it, not to mention stuff like Weavile or Bisharp.

342.png

Actually the strongest Wicked Blow user but there's not much to talk about here since nothing switches in to Crawdaunt anyways lol.

809.png

I think this would actually like to run Bullet Punch rather than Extreme Speed on CB sets, mainly because being able to revenge kill Dragapult seems really important. Thanks to the Iron Fist boost it's only barely weaker than Extreme Speed is. However Bullet Punch is less good at revenging certain targets like Regieleki and Zeraora, so it depends. I feel like Melmetal could also run a straight up Speed-boosting move and be annoying. Although it's still pretty slow after a boost, being able to outspeed more things and flinch them with Double Iron Bash seems pretty cheap. Something like Agility + Protective Pads or Agility + Weakness Policy could fit depending on team.

142.png

Think this would be a usable mon on offense. Head Smash and Brave Bird are both extremely spammable options with Rock Head, but Aerodactyl is also the fastest mon to get both Sticky Web and Stealth Rock, making it have some nice lead capabilities. Plus, it's an offensive mon with a nice speed tier that can actually stomach a strong Extreme Speed if needed.

745-d.png

Probably more one-note than Aerodactyl and Terrakion but I'm still mentioning it because its Head Smash goes STUPID.

508.png

Strongest Scrappy Extreme Speed user which is a respectable niche, more so than in past gens because the speed king is usually Dragapult and Intimidate is blocked by Scrappy. Stoutland also has Superpower to get perfect coverage with Normal but it has a really sucky movepool otherwise. It doesn't even get a good Normal STAB stronger than 80 base power so it fits pretty narrowly into the role of revenge killer.

115.png

This has Scrappy FakeSpeed but it is weaker. Still might be usable if you can pair it with bulky pivots so it can re-enter battle multiple times to chip a fast foe. Fake Out could prove good to chip down a faster Extreme Speed user, too.

Lots of other fun stuff that I don't care to mention right now. It'll take a lot of hashing out to determine what's broken, which I imagine will be a lot of things, but the wounds have healed from the times when every OM was extreme speed spam so I'm willing to give it a try.

Fell Stinger now has a user!

Scizor @ Life Orb/Leftovers
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Fell Stinger
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off/Roost
- Swords Dance/Super Power

Swords Dance may seem redundant with Fell Stinger already but even with Life Orb and Technician, getting the boost is a hard task (unless you pair it with something like a Fairy Lock user to prevent the switch).
At +2, fell stinger 2HKO most unresisted walls.

There might be better options for offense but it seems like a fun choice for anyone trying to make Fell Stinger work.

I do love the creativity! We'll definitely have to take some extra-active care for watching E-Speed it seems
