No ferrothorn? No rillaboom? Drednaw getting shell smash and ice spinner? After learning all this, I realized that it was the perfect time to build a drednaw team before pokemon home or the dlc gives us anything that makes drednaw bad lol. So thats what I did!
Grimmsnarl @ Light Clay
Ability: Prankster
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Spirit Break
- Parting Shot
I decided to use screens grimmsnarl since I wanted a more hyper offensive team. Light clay pairs with reflect and light screen, while spirit break lets me hit opposing dark types that won't let me parting shot them. Parting shot is a great tool that grimmsnarl gained, letting me pivot out to my attackers after setting up screens. I won't be using my tera type much, but I chose fairy because of how good it is as a defensive typing, it removes the fighting weakness from my dark typing and also makes my spirit breaks stronger.
Drednaw @ White Herb
Ability: Shell Armor
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Stone Edge
- Liquidation
- Ice Spinner
The star of the team is shell smash drednaw, with almost perfect coverage in stone edge, liquidation and ice spinner. Ice spinner is far superior than the previous ice fang, and can guarantee kills on pokemon like dragonite and garchomp. Although swift swim might seem like a better ability, rain is rarely seen now and you want to avoid crits as much as possible to continue your sweep. Having a pure water type tera not only makes your liquidations stronger, but also removes all the weaknesses you get from the rock typing, avoiding revenge killing from moves like mach punch and bullet punch.
Chi-Yu @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Beads of Ruin
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Taunt
- Flamethrower
- Dark Pulse
Although shell smash drednaw sounded really strong, it is completely shut down by unaware pokemon, which are quite common in this generation with the introduction of clodsire, skeledirge and especially dondozo. Nasty plot chi-yu with taunt completely shuts down these pokemon, blocking any recovery attempts and 3koing them with dark pulse or flamethrower. Boots chi-yu was also a great gholdengo switch in, and a special attacker that the team really needed.
Orthworm @ Leftovers
Ability: Earth Eater
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Shed Tail
- Stealth Rock
- Iron Head
- Body Press
With such a huge weakness against ground, I thought orthworm would be a fun pick. Earth eater makes it a pure steel type that does not fear ground type attacks and heal from them. The team also benefits from a slow shed tail from orthworm, as it lets them set up safely behind a substitute. Iron head is just to hit pokemon that are immune to body press, but you can run iron defense or earthquake if you want. Body press takes advantage of your high defense to damage other pokemon consistently. Tera water is chosen as water is a great defensive typing and it also removes orthworm's fire weakness.
Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake
I wanted an offensive pokemon that could switch into different types of hits, whether it be special attacks from chi-yu, or physical attacks from great tusk, or strong water type attacks, so I chose dragonite. Dragonite is one of the pokemon that benefits from terastalizing the most, as it can set up a dragon dance before cleaning teams with its stab extreme speed. Fire punch and earthquake lets me hit pokemon that extreme speed won't do much against, like corviknight, dragapult and balloon gholdengo, though I guess you can run dragon claw over earthquake if you want. Adamant nature makes sure that your extreme speeds will hit harder.
Chien-Pao @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Sword of Ruin
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Ice Spinner
- Crunch
- Sucker Punch
Chien-pao is a strong physical breaker that also appreciates dondozo being gone. This set is basically just like weavile's bread and butter set in gen 8, but replace ice shard with sucker punch. Tera ghost is chosen to avoid a fighting move for one turn, and also prevents dragonites from spamming extreme speed when they're facing you.
The team has a massive weakness against fairy types, especially iron valiant. I tried using iron moth over chi-yu before, but I really struggled to breakthrough walls with just iron moth (or maybe I just don't really know how to use it). I'm still learning gen 9 ou, as its vastly different from gen 8 ou, and I would appreciate any type of advice. Thank you!
