Sandy Shocks is a dominant, metagame defining offensive pivot thanks to its high Special Attack, solid Speed, good bulk and typing, and potent offensive potential and useful utility. Volt Switch allows Sandy Shocks to gain momentum off of foes like Wo-Chien, Rotom-C, and Decidueye and bring in teammates like Gengar and Iron Jugulis to wallbreak. Power Gem is an option over Thunderbolt to prevent Kilowattrel from walling Sandy Shocks while hitting Rotom-H and Salamence super effectively. Tera Ice in conjunction with Tera Blast lets Sandy Shocks wipe out Grass-types like Wo-Chien, Brambleghast, and Decidueye that would wall its STAB combination as well as hit Dragon-types like Salamence and other foes like Hippowdon. Alternatively, Tera Grass can be used to wipe out Gastrodon and Quagsire while still retaining coverage for Hippowdon, also helping out in the Sandy Shocks mirror by resisting its STAB moves, although it becomes more vulnerable to faster foes like Gengar and Talonflame as well as First Impression from Slither Wing and Lokix. It especially pairs well with Spikes, as Sandy Shocks can drop Thunderbolt, since it is not mandatory and the ability to wipe out Gastrodon and opposing Sandy Shocks while acting as an offensive Spiker is very valuable. If you do not want to commit to Terastallization for offensive potential with Tera Blast, Sandy Shocks can use Spikes or Stealth Rock to act as an entry hazard setter while also retaining pivoting duties. In this case, Tera Ground is best, since Sandy Shocks doesn’t need to use Terastallization offensively, and it does have benefits like strengthening Earth Power against Quagsire and Hippowdon and removing its Ground weakness in mirrors. Heavy-Duty Boots allows Sandy Shocks to pivot throughout a game without being worn down by entry hazards.
Sandy Shocks shines well on VoltTurn, bulky offense, and balance teams, best synergizing with other pivots like Greninja, Talonflame, and Scizor to create momentum cores to overwhelm each other’s checks. Greninja pressures Ground-types like Hippowdon, Assault Vest Donphan, and opposing Sandy Shocks, while Talonflame and Scizor can pressure Grass-types like Decidueye and Wo-Chien. Talonflame also beats out Slither Wing and Lokix, while Scizor also can revenge kill Gengar and Noivern. Slowbro is another pivot that can switch into threats like Noivern and Gastrodon. Wallbreakers like Gengar and Iron Jugulis appreciate Sandy Shocks’s pivot support and can overwhelm Gastrodon and Cyclizar. Poison Touch Grafaiai also pressures the aforementioned Grass-types and can easily cripple the likes of Scream Tail and Hippowdon.

Sandy Shocks can function as an excellent lead on hyper offense teams thanks to its access to both Stealth Rock and Spikes. Lead Sandy Shocks should rarely be Terastallized, as you would much rather use it on a sweeper, but Tera Ghost ensures Rapid Spin users like Cyclizar and Donphan cannot remove Sandy Shocks's entry hazards. However, if paired with Froslass that sets Spikes, Sandy Shocks can use Tera Blast in conjunction with Tera Ice to act as a dangerous sweeper that still provides Stealth Rock support. The given EVs ensure that Sandy Shocks will get a Speed boost from Booster Energy, allowing it to outspeed foes like Gengar, Iron Jugulis, and Talonflame and threaten them with its offensive potency.
Lead Sandy Shocks exclusively fits on hyper offense as a key enabler of dangerous setup sweepers with its entry hazard setting capabilities. Ghost-types like Froslass, Mimikyu, and Polteageist all are able to keep Rapid Spin users like Donphan and Cyclizar from removing the entry hazards, with the former being able to cover Spikes for Sandy Shocks and the latter two able to use the aforementioned Rapid Spin users as setup bait to sweep, enjoying the extra chip against foes like Hippowdon and Tyranitar. Scizor, Iron Jugulis, and Gyarados can take advantage of the Grass- and Ground-types Sandy Shocks forces in by virtue of its STAB combination being threatening to a large portion of the metagame. A dual screens setter like Espeon pairs well with Sandy Shocks to better enable setup sweepers with the combination of entry hazard and dual screens support.
