Sailor Moon Dub, Why they never aired Sailor Stars?

Okay, this has been bothering me for quite some time now...Mod, if there does happen to be another discussion like this, please feel free to delete this, but, I have to say this. It's been on my mind for way too long.

Okay, I've been reading around Wikimoon trying to find out the actual reason why they wouldn't air Sailor Stars. From what I've read, there seems to be a reason that is in common with most theories.

It seemed that Toei was either wanted too much money to air Sailor Moon, for one. That, in all honesty, I think is a load of crap. Toei was being exceptionally greedy...

The other reason seemed to be that they didn't want to hurt Sailor Moon's 'family friendly' image. Hello? These are teenage girls were talking about here. I don't honestly think this was made with little kids in mind. Heck, an example right here: They aired all of the fighting with Dragon Ball Z on Toonami. And Sailor moon can't have the decent fighting scenes? Scenes of death? There was also the contrivercy of Haruka (Amara) and Michiru (Michelle)'s lesbian relationship. Kids are going to be exposed to it one way or another, these people have to realize it.

Then there is the gender changing Sailor Starlights. This, I have no clue what's wrong with. They disguise themselves as guys...even if it is dressing in drag, there still isn't too much wrong with it! They change genders...so what?

Then there is the nudity of the very last episode...this, I can sort of understand. But, there is also a simple explanation for this too. Airing Sailor Moon on adult swim. Heck, they did it with Bleach, Deathnote, Code Geass, and other animes...why not Sailor Stars?

I know I'm only fourteen, and suck at presenting a decent case...but, you have to admit, it is kinda weird to air four of the five seasons of Sailor Moon, and not air the fifth. From what I saw, they translated the manag of Sailor Stars to english. Why not the anime? What is there in losing?

Thank you, if you did listen, for listening. Any opinions would be nice...but, please, no trolling.

The nudity fact could also be sorted by cutting the scene, not airing the finale, or just airbrushing it over.

I agree, it is a little odd. Maybe ratings were the reason?

And this happens to a lot of Japanese shows. Anmie is for teens/adults there, and we think it's for kids. We dub it for kids, something that we can't work around, show gets cut.

Hmmm...that is true. But, I have seen the episode in question...I will give Toei that much, the nudity could be a factor.

But, they could put those black bars, or some of the mosaic censoring on said scenes. Problem solved right there.

I figured as much -_- Most Japanese shows are awesome...they just have very sucky english dubs. The rating might kind of be the reason why...hell, I loved Sailor Moon when I was like, five and stuff. It's just a bit of injustice for the anime. I'm not sure if they've done that for any other anime...but, it's just a cock of bull.

Long time no see, Mistress Darkrai. =)

I assume you're talking about them airing it in English, yes? As opposed to Japanese?

If this is the case, I wouldn't be too worried. The dub would have been horribly massacred in an effort to cut out the non-family-friendly parts. Maybe the creators realized that and didn't want it aired in English?

Otherwise, all of the reasons already stated could contribute.
If you couldn't tell, the main point of this post was to say hi to you. And attempt to input on the discussion.

Fixed.

I agree, don't watch 4kids dubs. It's simply not worth it. Sailor Moon was popular, I'm sure there are subs somewhere. Maybe even a well-done fandub, though those are rare.

If there's one universal truth in anime, it's this: 4Kids Entertainment is the devil.

I'm getting off-topic, though, because Sailor Moon wasn't dubbed by 4Kids; it was dubbed by DiC. If 4Kids got their hands on this, it might have been even worse. O_O

I hope FUNimation pursues the redub of Sailor Moon, though. I actually LIKED DiC's dub as a kid; looking back, it's just one more indicator of how naive I was back then.

same thing happened to Naruto, and yet they won't air it on Adult Swim, Sailor Moon was the first real anime I saw, its sad how people just forget about it completely

I also remember cardcaptor sakura, I recently saw the series in Japanese with english subs, after mistakenly clicking on an english dub I was dissapointed in the voices and background music, it was just terrible..

4Kids didn't dub Sailor Moon? Huh.

I know they didn't do CCS. That was a Canadian company called Nelvana.

I think Pokemon was the best dub they ever had. Which is saying something.

Wrong--it's the other way around. Anime, except for Seinen and Josei, really is more for kids in Japan (shouen, like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, Death Note, Code Geass, etc., is all for kids, as shounen literally means "young boy." Similar goes with shoujo-anime, like Sailor Moon, with shoujo literally meaning "young girl"). Adults are really a very minority audience for such series. Japan just has more lax standards when it comes to that sort of stuff (especially when Sailor Moon first started airing, which I believe may have been before NGE, when things started getting more strict in Japan, but I'm not sure on the dates and don't feel like checking), so it isn't as much of a big deal putting some violence and fanservice into the stuff. However, these lax standards doesn't quite transfer over too well into the U.S. Thus, the audience being changed more towards teens here, in order to try and keep that stuff in.

However, sometimes the series really are just stuff that wouldn't really appeal to teens here as much it would kids, which is natural since they were originally meant for kids anyway. But, because of the comparatively-lax standards in Japan, sometimes dubbing companies feel that series they want to try and target towards the younger-demorgraphics have too much violence and such for the audience, and thus cut it out to make it more suitable for them. Sometimes companies take this a bit too far though, like what 4Kids did to One Piece. However, luckily it now seems that most dubbing companies are leaning more towards keeping things uncut, and targeting the series towards the teen-adult demographic in the US nowadays, which is nice.

that quote made me lol sanjay ^^ did someone really post that?

Yeah. He was a troll but I found it hilarious.

Seconding what Naxte said about laxer standards. IIRC their equivalent of PG allows homosexuality. Nudity is easier to air too. And they're a lot less strict about violence.

That is true...ehehehe ^^ Hi to you as well, Fuzz!

@ Sanjay: The day I find a well done fandub will be the day my ass grows wings and flies...and to find a finished fandub, that's actually good? That would be incredible! though...highly unlikely.

@ Naxte: I totally agree with you...even if for the most part, I could really understand a word you said ^.^;; But, what I can understand is that Japan was a little more lax natured about putting this kind of stuff in anime...right? I do agree with most of the fact that the dubbing companies of America suck...and I think Sailor Moon got the worst treatment of them all, to be honest. But, that's just me.

If that's the case, maybe they should just re-release Sailor Moon as a whole and re-dub it uncut, like they did with some animes I was very fond of as a kid (Robotech, Akira, etc.). As for where to put it? If they were smart, adultswim would be begging for rights to show all of it uncut. I mean why not? It's already been parodied several times on other adultswim shows.

It took years, I mean YEARS for me to finally get to see one of my favorite animes from the 80's, Voltron (aka Beast King Golion) uncut as it was made to be, and..well it's been much more than ten years since Sailor Moon's original release. So hang in there, maybe we WILL see Stars on tv, as well as the rest as it was meant to be. ( Amara and Michelle? Zoisite a girl? Gag me).

Yea in case you haven't noticed, been a huge fan of Sailor Moon for 13 years and going strong. Peace.

Dude. I think I'm in love with you. xD Just kidding...but I agree with you! The one thing I greatly distained was Zoisite's gender change. Fisheye's too. They should've just left Sailor Moon as it was...and it was awesome the way it originally was, I might add ;) But, that's the American dubbing company for ya...
