Rest + Sleep Talk

The main reason why ReSTalkers are so used nowadays is that we need an status absorber, because Aromatherapy and Heal Bell is really restricted to few useful pokémons (Blissey, Miltank, and some good UU like Meganium).

This thread will be focused in the different pokémons which can use Rest and Sleep Talk effectively.

Post your favourites, and if you can, with EVs, nature and attacks.

I think that a useful one is the next:

Heatran @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def / 100 SpA / 60 SpD
Nature: Modest
Rest
Sleep Talk
Lava Plume
Earth Power

With Lava Plume it will give problems to physical attackers with a 30% of burning. Earth Power makes a good combo, and allow Heatran to attack other Heatran.

I guess people aren't contributing because you really can slap two moves with decent coverage on any pokemon with decent defenses and call it a sleep talker.

Common Ones:

Snorlax
Zapdos
Machamp
Heatran
Suicune
Cresselia

Other ideas:

Dragonite - Flamepulse or Clawquake
Gyarados - Waterfall + Stone Edge / Dragon Dance
Spiritomb - Shadow Ball / HP Fight
Heracross - Megahorn / Close Combat guts pwnage
Hariyama - Revenge + Whirlwind
Milotic - Surf + HP Electric / Ice Beam / Toxic
Articuno - Ice Beam + Roar
Bronzong - Gyro Ball + Earthquake
Metagross - Meteor Mash + Earthquake
Forretress - Spikes + Gyro Ball
Skarmory - Spikes + Whirlwind is fun
Snorlax - I mention again because Body Slam / Whirlwind is fun
Crobat - Sleep Talk + Whirlwind, yup thats it. Fastest Whirlwind in the game

Thats all I can think of for now, I might edit more later.

My favorite is Suicune(CroCune) with Calm Mind and Surf. It may not have the best coverage but he is a beast and is hard as hell to kill.

Spiritomb can work as like CroCune with Dark Pulse and CM.

Raikou Lover:

I don't really understand what Dragonite, Skarmory, and Articuno would be doing with a RestTalk set. I mean I think Roost would be much more reliable.

Also a Scarfed Assist Whirlwind is faster than Crobat's.

Spiritomb's my fave, with Shadow Ball and HP Fighting. Makes an excellent counter to anything that could possibly give a Rest/Sleep Talk Snorlax trouble if it has Rest and Sleep Talk himself.

Whirlwind Snorlax is dumb, but Rest Talk Snorlax is a neat wall as I like killing things.

Restalk is overrated sometimes. Picking 'rest' happens too often for me.. and when you get slept you might lose a turn anyway when trying to sleep talk while waking up. I think Aromatherapy/Heal Bell is quite underrated and is nice to have on any team.

I'd say Snorlax is probably my most favorite (or usable) restalker, because it is quite sturdy and has a nice chance of paralysing with STAB body slam.

Well, with a move priority of -5, it won't usually be 'winding first. ;3

I have to agree with you there, that really summarizes any potential discussion this thread had. Restalkers may be decent at walling/status absorption, but they're nothing special or exciting.

Metagross is a pretty underrated Sleep Talker; one of the things that can truly counter Blissey 100% of the time with no repercussions (barely takes anything from its moves, iirc even flamethrower, and doesn't mind any status) and a team player in general.

Spiritomb's good too, it lasts a lot longer than the Pain Split sets.

Sleep Talk ignores all move priority and always has a priority of 0 for the move it chooses.

Very interesting, thanks for correcting me. That would make sense, since Sleep Talk is a 0 priority move itself.. I don't know what I was thinking. x3

i agree that rest talk is overrated so i just use sleep talk :D. here's my standard heatran:

heatran @ choice scarf
modest 4 HP, 252 sp. atk, 252 speed
-fire blast
-HP [ice]
-earth power
-sleep talk

works like a charm :D. the thing about using sleep talk and not rest is that you can still take the sleep inducer without sacrificing another slot for rest. i do this quite a lot with offensive threats.

Milotic is the best....period. With the Smogon strat dex's EV spread its defensive stats shoot up to 395 Hp 378 Def and 429 Sp Def. Timid Gengars can't even OHKO that with ThunderBolt and it gets 2HKOed by stab Surf; which allows it to hit back hard and Ice Beam is there to teach those Dragons who try to switch in thinking that Milotics Def stat will be low.

When it comes to sleep talkers, there is no compromise.

what if it gets paralyzed? Then it is slow....and death fodder. It needs rest to take all status' (except freeze) and stay alive.

yeah paralysis is definitely a problem. it's just an option over rest talk. specs version may do this better, it jsut happens to be the one i use most often :P

Not at all, I've been using the set for a while. Don't knock something you've never tried. With Body Slam, Whirlwind, and massive defenses that large fuck can shuffle paralysis around nicely. People do it with Hariyama so whats wrong with snorlax, it's defenses are HIGHER!!! And if you question Snorlax's physical durability, It's much bulkier than Vaporeon also.

Only physical defense is boosted...

The problem here is that Marvel Scale only raises Defense, not Special Defense. Otherwise you are correct that Gengar's unboosted Thunderbolt never 2HKOs Milotic unless said Gengar is + SpAtk, but regardless Milotic is left at low HP trying to beat Gengar, a Pokemon whom it should not be in against in the first place, 1on1.

I'm not fund of SleepTalk much..because I have Aroma/Natural Cure in most of my teams a/o Clefable/Breloom, but it's useful I know..my fav SleepTalker is Heracross (good especially in Uber for Darkrai).

I never liked the idea of restalk very much because of how they're useless one-third of the time so instead I just use sleep talk with an instant recovery move. I've been using Zapdos with roost for this but Togekiss, Gliscor, Milotic are all candidates for healing-while-still-asleeptalk.

Calm Restalk Zapdos is argueably the best Gengar counter(excluding tomb/Bliss), which gives it a niche to fill right off the bat. Restalk Machamp is also an excellent option for a restalker.

I still think Zapdos is the best rest/talker in the game, as it takes very little damage from all the common sleep users (gengar, yanmega, bronzong, breloom, Milo), and it can spam paralysis via STAB discharge.

Suicune is also one of my favorites, since after one CM very few things counter it well. Weakness to breloom sucks, though.
