Introduction

So the story behind this team's creation is, while I was tutoring someone, I discovered that some guy suggested that he use Toxic Starmie (seriously, what the hell :|). Not standing for such a horrible suggestion, I told him to stop wasting his time and throw the team away, while I build him a "usable" rain team to use on the ladder. I originally made this team without any intention of using it, but after looking at it for a bit, discovered it is pretty cool, so I made some tweaks to it and been having some fun so far. Moxie Gyarados in rain is pretty beastly, with Choice Band Dragonite and Rapid Spin Starmie removing hazards and nuking the opposing team to support an easy sweep.

Dragonite1.png

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 6 Def / 252 Spd
Nature: Adamant [+Atk, -SAtk]
` Earthquake
` Outrage
` Waterfall
` ExtremeSpeed
.......................
Comments & Suggestions:
Dragonite replaces Tornadus, who was my primary rain abuser. While he still has the Stealth Rock weakness, he adds an extra electric resist to my team, while it can come in a sponge special hits. I find this set to be very frustrating to face when throwing Spikes into the equation, and it has worked wonders for me so far. The idea to use Dragonite came to me today, as I needed something which could deal with stuff like Rotom-W a little better (and preferably something that could abuse rain and hazards). While the drop in speed frustrates me a little bit, in the end, the power side has been amplified with Choice Band and Stealth Rock, while ExtremeSpeed checks faster threats that don't resist it, covering some of the speed issues.

Ferrothorn1.png

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helm
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Nature: Impish [+SDef -SAtk]
` Leech Seed
` Stealth Rock
` Bulldoze
` Power Whip
.......................
Comments & Suggestions:
Ferrothorn's role on my team is to set up Stealth Rock and help me with special threats such as Lati@s, Rotom-W etc. I have now switched back to Spikes, which further adds to the pressure this team can create. While a spin blocker would be nice, most common rapid spinners and taken about by Starmie + Ferrothorn, so I am not too bothered any more. Ferrothorn also helps me fight Volt-Turn teams, which have been rising in popularity over the past few weeks. Normally, when I see a Volt-Turn team in team preview, I lead with Ferrothorn and try and get up Stealth Rocks as soon as possible so they can't freely spam scouting moves early on. Volt-Turn teams are still difficult to handle, but Ferrothorn helps in some way at least.

Politeod2.png

Politoed @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 236 HP / 252 SAtk / 20 Spd
Nature: Modest [+SAtk, -Atk]
` Hydro Pump
` Encore
` Ice Beam
` Hidden Power [Grass]
.......................
Comments & Suggestions:
Politoed is the weather inducer of choice, setting up a favourable weather condition Gyarados with a boosted Waterfall, weakening the power of fire-type moves for Ferrothorn, boosting the accuracy of Thunder and Hurricane to 100% while increasing the strength of Hydro Pump and water-type moves in general. The set of choice is Choice Scarf, which puts Politoed at 394 speed, enough to out-speed the likes of Gengar, non scarfed / polished Terrakions and Alakazam. Focus Blast is reserved for things such as Ferrothorn. Encore is used over Perish Song to mess up those frustrating SubDD Dragonite sets, while Ice Beam is reserved for dragon-types. This, and the Choice Specs sets are what I have had most success with when using Politoed, so I decided to go with what I know, rather than venturing out there to see what other possibilities are out there. If there is another set I would consider over Specs or Scarf, it would probably be the the 3 Attacks set on the analysis, which still retains the offensive nature, but grants me the ability to switch moves.

Starmie2.png

Starmie @ Life Orb
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Nature: Timid [+Spd, -Atk]
` Hydro Pump
` Ice Beam
` Thunder
` Rapid Spin
.......................
Comments & Suggestions:
Starmie supports this team by removing frustrating entry hazards like Spikes and Toxic Spikes, while removing Stealth Rock, which shortens the lifespan of Tornadus and Gyarados. As well as being a decent support Pokémon, Starmie doubles up as a strong rain sweeper, with it's boosted Hydro Pumps. Between Tentacruel and Starmie, I felt Starmie was the superior option on this team due to it's fast, sweeping nature. I chose to use Leftovers over Life Orb because I lack recover, and switching in + Life Orb recoil adds up pretty quickly. Hidden Power Grass allows me to hit Water-types, especially Ground / Water types such as Swampert (lol) and Gastrodon (who is set up on by Gyarados anyway, but it's still nice when he is removed from the picture). Ice Beam allows coverage over Dragon-types not holding a Choice Scarf.

Gliscor1.png

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 248 HP / 176 Def / 84 Spd
Nature: Impish [+Def, -SAtk]
` Earthquake
` Swords Dance
` Protect
` Ice Fang
.......................
Comments & Suggestions:
A rather odd choice, but I needed something to be able to do something to Terrakion (especially scarf variants), which could wipe out my entire team. Gliscor is essentially the Pokémon that helps me with physically offensive threats. Like Starmie, I had two options with Gliscor, I either use the defensive set, or I go down the Swords Dance route. There are two reasons why I chose Swords Dance. The first being that because of the offensive nature of the team, Swords Dance compliments it well, with the second reason being that I don't like having only one attacking move. Gone back to using Ice Fang so Gengar can't come in for free. I interchange between Taunt and Protect, which both benefit my team in some way (Taunt for Stall + Ferrothorn, Protect for Scarf Rotom scouting).

GyaradosShiny2.png

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 56 HP / 248 Atk / 204 Spd
Nature: Adamant [+Atk, -SAtk]
` Substitute
` Dragon Dance
` Bounce
` Waterfall
.......................
Comments & Suggestions:
Gyarados rounds the team off by being the game ender. By avoiding status, Gyarados has more breathing room to set up multiple Dragon Dances, while benefiting from the boost from rain and getting extra leftovers recovery with Bounce. It is pretty essential that my other Pokémon have done their part in weakening my opponent's team and removing Stealth Rock (though I guess I can recover some damage from that with Bounce), as I want the best possible environment for Gyarados to set up Dragon Dance and sweep without much interruption. Moxie is the ability of choice for Gyarados. While Intimidate can make setting up a bit easier, it's harder to stop Gyarados when Moxie is boosting his attack to ridiculous levels with every kill. Bounce allows me to hit fighting types and anything that resists Waterfall, while granting me an extra turn of recovery from Leftovers.

Conclusion

Thanks for taking the time to read this team. While I have mostly used Sand this gen, this team has sparked my interest in Rain again, so I think I will give that a try for awhile. As I said before, this probably as generic as they come with rain teams, but it has worked well for me (and my student). I can't think of much else I can do with the team to make it better, so I might as well post it for some criticism and suggestions.

PS - Rotom and Terra weak. Gastro is ass.

looks good but there are some things you might want to improve. for one gliscor has ice and water weakness, not good if youre running rain. for a ground type or beating terrakion maybe look into gastrodon or something. Second, tornadus might want to know rain dance in case rain gets disabled (by abomasnow or t-tar usually) and it can do it before anything else goes thanks to prankster. maybe take off specss, put life orb or a berry on it. Finally, starmie might want pyschic and you should replace at least one hydro pump with scald or surf(but scald really) since 80 accuracy might lead you to miss ocassionally. Also bonce might seem good for leftovers, but its only 1 turn if at all, there are things such as ice fang you might to replace it with.

Ok, I know you're trying to help but Psychic Starmie? Ice Fang > Bounce on Gyarados? I guess maybe Psychic for.....Eviolite Machoke....eh anyways, I don't think I will be using those suggestions.

Nice team! I honestly don't know anything to say, and I think it's really up to the user's preferences, to be honest.

One thing I think you should change is Encore to Perish Song. It's better to Perish Song a Susbtitute + Dragon Dance Gyarados and Calm Mind Reuniclus than Encoring it. This is especially crucial when they are last minute set-uppers. But, again, I suppose their usefulness varies depending on the circumstances of the match. Another is using Protect over Taunt. It makes your team perform better against Rotom-w because you won't have to be predicting whether or not it'll Volt Switch or Hydro Pump. Gyarados can take advantage of Ferrothorn if need be, so losing Taunt isn't so bad.

Well, here are some things. I don't know if it helped, but good luck with your team!

perhaps maybe not ice fang, but i still think you might want scald, and gliscor is taking a risk in rain, where any opponent's rain pokemon could kill you. gastrodon would be a good switch becuase it akes water type attacks as well, and is definitly bulky enough to survive against terrakion.

gastro just makes this team so much weaker to terrak, glisc is pretty neccesary in order to stop terrak, as scarf 6-0s

Hey
Nice team, but there are a couple gaping weaknesses I can see right off the bat.
Magnezone + Starmie kill your whole team. Starmie can Thunder Dos, Nadus, and Politoed, and possibly Starmie where as Magnezone handles your Ferrothorn.
You could consider using an Azumarill over Gyarados because it checks an insane amount of pokemon like Dragons with Ice Punch ( I believe Ice Punch kills Multiscale Dragonite),Terrakion, Heatran, Magnezone, and a lot of things that could be problems in the late game.
Azumarill @ Choice Band
252 HP, 252 Atk, 4 Spe
Adamant
-Aqua Jet
-Waterfall
-Superpower
-Ice Punch

Another giant threat is Starmie.
If your own Starmie dies, It will rape your whole team bar Ferrothorn
One option you could use is Calm Mind Latias.

Latias @ Leftovers
252 HP, 252 Spe, 4 SPA
Timid
-Calm Mind
-Dragon Pulse
-Recover
-Refresh/Roar/Filler

Hope I helped, good luck with the team.

Thanks, but I can't really remove Gyarados, Latias seems interesting though.

I gave Protect + Ice Fang a try on Gliscor, seeing as I can remove entry hazards with Starmie and kill Skarm, I don't see much use for Taunt now.

This team is great. I dont see many holes in it. The synergy is great.
However, i see a little problem; Swords Dance, Ice punch Lucario. It completely wrecks your team after setting up on Ferrothorn.
You may want to try and put intimidate on gyarados because that would be the only way of stopping lucario without changing any of your pokemon.
However, if you would want to change your pokemon, a bulky DD Dragonite would be good as well.

I can not find any other problems in this team, very well made...

Hey you have nice team. However little changes :)

Tornadus, you dont actually need tailwind, its only 3 turns long (I hope its 5 turns long in 6th gen, Lol :P). You could use HP Ice or Taunt over Tailwind.
Taunt can stop Ferrothorn, Blissey etc. HP Ice is mainly for dragons. Hammer Arm isnt very good so keep that Focus (Miss) Blast.

Emh… that Gliscor should be ToxicStalling. SD Gliscor without Sub/Sand isn’t very effective or--- at least ToxicStall works very well, no matter what team;
It will hurt opponent by serious damage. Max Speed with Impish (+Def, -SpA) gives you very nice 289 spe. 248 Hp evs are for 4 Substitude
and Toxic Orb Heal giving nice odds. Otherwise set is same as in Smogon.

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 248 Hp/ 8 Def / 252 Spd
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Protect
- Substitude

Gyarados, Taunt would work over Substitude, if you use taunt put more evs to Hp from Atk. Please USE JOLLY GYARA WITH MAX SPEED.
Seriously… its weird to see so many gyaras without max Speed, what it badly needs; Bulky Phanzer Gyara is different thing… lol

Anyway do some little changes, and your team will be even better! GL :)

after a couple playtesting battles, i have one thing to say; Ferrothorn shreds this team to pieces! i don't know what but there needs to be something other than tornadus's focus blast to take care of ferrothorn. also, gyarados has terrible coverage with bounce and waterfall, he needs another coverage move, infact i would ditch bounce all together, and give it earthquake or stone edge. and substitute really "widdles" down gyarados's health to easily. i would replace substitute for taunt and bounce for stone edge or EQ

but the good news is that scarf politoed is extremely un-expected, and i usually got my weather up in the end, and it usually takes out 2 pokemon from the start.

i playtested azumarill over gyarados and it worked really well, but i know you don't want to change him. tonite i am going to test latias.

Hey man, this is a really nice rain team, but you could probably make a few changes to improve it. The first change I think you could make is changing Moxie on Gyarados to intimidate. My reasoning for this is the threat that Dragon Dance Scrafty poses to your team. Basically, it can set up on Gliscor and then KO with Ice Punch. At +1, Jolly Max Speed Scrafty, which is the most common nature/evs that DD Scrafty run can outspeed Tornadus and OHKO with Ice Punch while Ferrothorn is smashed by Drain Punch/Hi-Jump-Kick. You can probably revenge kill it with a duo of Starmie/Politoed, but both are valuable members to your team and it's generally better to lose no Pokemon than 1. Gyarados is a perfect Pokemon to counter Scrafty, except having Moxie over Intimidate lets Scrafty do 69.86% - 82.03% with a +1 Crunch, which has a pretty big chance of an OHKO with SR up. While Moxie is cool for offensive purposes, Gyarados is already pretty strong at +1 and Intimidate allows Gyarados a better shot at tanking its way past stuff like SD Scizor and certain SD Virizion variants. That being said, I'd say it's worth a shot to try Intimidate over Moxie on Gyarados.

Secondly, I can see Ferrothorn being a real nuisance to this team. Politoed or Starmie can hardly threaten it and it can set up Spikes on everything but Tornadus. Gliscor and Gyarados ~may~ be able to set up on it, but it does have a chance of winning against both of them; Leech Seed and Power Whip can do a decent job at whittling down Gliscor while Gyarados will always have its sub broken via Power Whip, even with Intimidate active, plus using Bounce on Rocky Helmet Ferrothorn will be a nightmare for Gyara, as it will take around 25% each time it tries to attack. To remedy this hole in the team, you could probably run Taunt on Gliscor over either Swords Dance or Protect, replacing the former gives you a more defensive approach, while replacing the latter allows you to lose out on some recovery [although even without Protect, Gliscor has fantastic staying power], so in the end it's really up to you what you want to replace. Taunt completely shuts down Ferrothorn, but also stops slower sweepers like Scizor and Conkeldurr.

Finally, I suggest running Perish Song over Encore on Politoed. Reason being is that with Taunt, Gliscor can now beat SubDD Dragonite with ease, which you cited as your main reason for using the move. As opposed to Encore, Perish Song has many benefits, such as stopping Baton Pass change and giving you a chance to stall out Pokemon that threaten a sweep, such as Reuniclus or something like +1/+1 Dragonite with Multiscale intact.

Hello, your rain team looks really nice. But I think that Magnezone can do a decent amount of damage to it once it traps Ferrethorn and sets up Charge Beams on it. I think you should replace Gyro Ball with Bulldoze. It will force Magnezone to try and kill Ferrethorn with HP Fire which won't do much in the rain or force it to switch out. Hope this help and good luck.

Hey there.

Rotom-W itself is a major problem for your team. It can essentially wreak havoc on almost all of your Pokemon bar Ferrothorn, which it can cripple with Will-O-Wisp. Since it does this much damage by itself, when used in a Volt-Turn core with Scizor, which can destroy Ferrothorn, your team will be at a major disadvantage. Another major threat for your team is Substitute + Calm Mind Jirachi, which can obliterate your team with its common set (Water Pulse / Thunder / Substitute / Calm Mind). Ferrothorn also has no form of recovery, and due to all of the repeated attacks it will have to take, it will be hard-pressed to survive throughout the match. Therefore, I suggest that you replace Tornadus with a Gastrodon. Tornadus isn't really doing much for your team in terms of synergy at all, and Gyarados already serves as your primary sweeper. Stall can be extremely weakened through the use of Gliscor + Gyarados anyway. That makes Tornadus the perfect candidate to replace. Gastrodon can easily take on Volt-Turn cores, especially with the Rapid Spin support that Starmie provides. It can also easily decimate Calm Mind Jirachi through the use of Earthquake, and can also greatly help against less-common threats such as Hurricane / Hidden Power Rock Volcarona. Its typing and synergy also makes it a perfect fit for your team.

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 SDef
Sassy nature
-Earthquake
-Scald
-Recover
-Toxic

Also, definitely run Taunt over Protect on Gliscor. Taunt is extremely useful for breaking stall, and your team greatly appreciates that, especially with the loss of Tornadus. Taunt lets Gliscor sweep much more easily, letting it break through powerful walls such as Skarmory.

Very solid team. Hope I helped, and good luck!

Just want to point out if you're gonna run Gastrodon run 96 def EVs and settle for the jump point at 160 spD- this means you won't have to switch out of Terrakion.

I fail to see what your inability to kill a Vaporeon (lol) has to do with rating my team. Please stop.

Thanks for the rates everyone, I'll try some of these out later.

Hey,

I really like your team. One of the largest threats to your team is Sun. Since your Politoed does not carry any form of recovery, Politoed can be worn down pretty easily. If Sun teams do win the weather war, you are pretty much screwed. A Latias over Tornadus seems like it would be a good fit here. Since a lot of Sun teams lack a solid Dragon resist, Latias can easily CM to victory against many Sun teams. Not only does Latias do a great job of absorbing many common attacks found on Sun teams, but she also stops Rotom-W and Reuniclus, two of the largest threats to your team. CM | Dragon Pulse | Sub/Roar | Roost should work for the moveset.

You could also try out CB Swampert or Stockpile Quagsire over the Gastrodon ideas people gave you.
I saw you mention the fact that you are very Terrakion and Rotom Weak
One option could be to try out your own scarfed Terrakion over Tornadus since Gyarados is the main sweeper and Nadus is your tagalong

Terrakion @ Choice Scarf
252 ATK, 252 Spe, 4 Def
Jolly ( +Spe, -SPAtk)
-Close Combat
-Stone Edge
-X Scissor
-Earthquake

Also, I personally believe that all rain teams need a freaking Jirachi. Jirachi is probably the most dangerous pokemon on rain teams. For this particular team I would try a more offensive set up like so,

Jirachi @ Leftovers
252 HP, 252 SPe 4 SPA
Timid ( +Spe, -Atk)
-Substitute
-Calm Mind
-Thunder
-Water Pulse

This set would destroy everything bar Gastrodon. You can easily set up on hazard setters like Ferro, Skarm, and Forrettress. Jirachi can even take out Blissey and Chansey if it can get enough boosts, and with these EV's, one seismic toss won't kill it.

Also, you can put Thunder Wave on Ferrothorn but watch out for Magnezones.

Hope I Helped.

A couple things:

I have been experimenting with Substitute Dragonite (set can be found in the first post), and it seems like the perfect fit for my team. Drop of power sucks, but it doesn't bother me that much if I can get up hazards. It helps a bit with Rotom and other special threats I have found, and pays well with Gliscor, which covers everything on the physical side of the spectrum. Dragon Tail has also been considered on this Dragonite set as it takes advantage of entry hazards.

I still interchange between Protect and Taunt on Gliscor, but I use Taunt more now.

I was going to use Choice Specs Politoed, but with the removal of Tornadus, I can afford to lose out on more speed on this team.

That's about it really.

Edit - If I can use a spread on Dragonite with more special attack, please let me know.

Magnezone is a real problem, since it sets up all over Ferrothorn and then proceeds to kill another mon before you can even threaten it out. I'd try either Bulldoze or Shed Shell on Ferrothorn. Use the former if you feel like killing Magnezone in the 1v1 matchup, since under rain its HP Fires will be doing ~30%. Use the latter if you feel that both your attacking moves are too important to drop for such a one-purpose move; lack of Lefties is annoying but in my experience using Ferrothorn on offensive rain, it very rarely needed to regain its health. I'd also try Aqua Tail on Dragonite, over Substitute. It lets you dent Tyranitar, making winning the weather war easier, and it actually hits CM Jirachi, who is a major pain for you to deal with. Losing Sub is kind of annoying but I feel the benefits of Aqua Tail is too good to pass up. Lastly, your Starmie has Encore listed, I assume this is a typo and Rapid Spin should be there. Anyway just some food for thought, this is an excellent team. luvdisc

I tried Aqua Tail on Dragonite and I.....hate it, I really do. I think for now I'll stick with Substitute on Dragonite but try for a more offensive spread.

Bulldoze on Ferro has been 50/50 for me, Magnezone is easier to handle now, but I like taking care of Gastro quickly (even though Gyara sets up on it).
