POMPEII - A VOLCANION BULKY OFFENSE TEAM

-----------------------Introduction-----------------------

Hey guys! I'm back, with another RMT, now about Volcanion.

Volcanion has been, and still is criminally underrated in the OU tier. Though it has a middling speed tier, its base 130 Special Attack, great defensive stats, and high BP STAB moves allow it to be an extremely threatening wallbreaker in the OU tier. It also has very good typing, as fire and water complement each other well, and its ability, Water Absorb, catches Water-types and rain teams off guard, as well as helping Volcanion to recover HP.

Let's jump into the team!

-----------------------Teambuilding-----------------------

Volcanion is the star of this team. It is supported by Heatran, who completes my 'Eruption Core'. Volcanion absorbs the water, while Heatran absorbs the fire. They are both very good great counters to rain and sun teams respectively.
Volcanion and Heatran are both great on the defensive and offensive sides, but they both have lackluster speed.

I needed a Grassy Terrain setter. Rillaboom is essential for setting up Grassy Terrain, which helps Volcanion and Heatran with their Earthquake weakness. Grassy Terrain also helps Volcanion and Heatran with recovery. It is a powerful Physical attacker and has priority in Grassy Glide.

Volcanion and Heatran easily get worn down by entry hazards, and Corviknight is here to deal with them. It also has a Ground- and Poison- type immunity (given that it doesn't use Roost), meaning Corviknight can easily switch into Poison- and Ground-type attacks.

Kartana is a great late-game sweeper, and it gets stronger and stronger with each kill. Kartana can clean up after Volcanion and the rest heavily damage the enemy’s team. Kartana can pull off some great endgame comebacks.

Garchomp helps with the fire weakness and is the rocker of the team. Rough Skin can also provide additional chip damage.

volcanion.gif

Pompeii (Volcanion) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Steam Eruption
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power

Set Details:
Volcanion is the star of this team. It faces a lot of competition in the OU tier with lots of powerful and more frequently used Fire- and Water-types such as Cinderace and Barraskewda. It sets itself apart from most of these Pokemon due to being the only Pokemon with a Fire- and Water- typing, having a 130 base special attack stat, good defenses, and a good move in Steam Eruption makes it a threatening wallbreaker in the OU tier.
Volcanion can take on many roles in a team, such as a specially offensive attacker, Bulky Defog/Hazer, and a SubSweeper. I find the specially offensive sets more useful as Volcanion can easily OHKO and 2HKO most of the meta. Combined with Choice Specs, its high-BP moves can blast holes in most teams. Steam Eruption is essentially a better scald, having both 110 BP and a 30% chance to burn, but it misses 5% of the time. Fire Blast was chosen over Flamethrower for the extra damage, and lastly, Sludge Wave and Earth Power are for coverage. I use Specs for the extra power, but Scarf can also be used over Specs to outspeed most Volcanion checks such as Landorus-T. Modest is used to(have a chance to) OHKO Garchomp.
You should be careful though, as Volcanion's Fire Blast and Steam Eruption's 8 PP can easily run dry (haha get it). Also, Volcanion's mediocre speed leaves it weak to primary OU Ground-type threats such as Landorus and Garchomp.

Calcs:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 339-400 (94.9 - 112%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Toxapex: 220-260 (72.3 - 85.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
I've never seen this much damage to Pex before...

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 176+ SpD Ferrothorn: 816-964 (231.8 - 273.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
burnt to ashes

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Fini: 118-139 (34.3 - 40.4%) -- 48.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

heatran.gif

Eruption (Heatran) @ Chople Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 84 HP / 160 Def / 104 SpD / 160 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Nature Power
- Toxic
- Earth Power

Set Details:
This Heatran set focuses more on Heatran's defensive capabilities than offensive capabilities. 160 EVs in speed is necessary to outspeed max speed Magearna, and the rest of the stats are spread so Heatran can take both special- and physical- attacks. Magma Storm is used to trap and gain chip on switch-ins, Earth Power is to hit opposing Heatrans, and Toxic is used mainly for Blissey and Mandibuzz and works well with Magma Storm to trap and poison enemy mons.
Nature Power is the more 'heat' part of this set. It catches most people off guard. Otherwise, you can use Protect to scout for moves. Nature Power turns into Thunderbolt, Psychic, and Moonblast in Electric, Psychic, and Moonblast respectively. They can hit Hawlucha hard, (funny how Electric, Psychic, and Misty Terrain Nature Power hit Hawlucha), and if Grassy Terrain is up, switching Swampert and Rhyperior into Heatran is a mistake. Chople Berry, another heat part of my set. It is mainly to tank a Close Combat from Hawlucha and High Jump Kick from Cinderace.

rillaboom.gif

Monke (Rillaboom) @ Choice Band
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Grassy Glide
- Wood Hammer
- U-turn
- Drain Punch

Set details:
This is a standard Rillaboom set. Grassy Glide is a priority STAB move, Wood Hammer is a high-BP STAB move, Drain Punch is to regain health from Fighting- weak mons such as Blissey, Ferrothorn, and Kartana, and U-turn is used to regain and maintain momentum. Choice Band, Adamant nature, and 252 EVs in Attack are used to hit very, very hard.
Rillaboom is here to support Volcanion and Heatran with Grassy Terrain. It decreases the power of Earthquake and provides the team with recovery. They are still weak to Earth Power though, and Nidoking easily forces them out.

corviknight.gif

Lancelot (Corviknight) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 SpD
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Defog
- Taunt
- Brave Bird
Nidoking and Lando-T destroying your volcanoes with Earthquakes? Corviknight is here to save them (be careful of Thunderbolt and Flamethrower)! Corviknight is an outstanding Defensive Tank/Defogger. It fits in the team well, as it effectively counters Ground types Volcanion is weak to, such as Garchomp and Landorus-T. Fire types are not a problem for this team as Heatran, Volcanion, and Garchomp easily deal with them. Roost is for reliable recovery, Brave Bird is the STAB move of Corviknight, Taunt is to disable Toxapex and Ferrothorn, and Defog takes away rocks and spikes, and supports Volcanion and Heatran. Rocky Helmet provides even more chip damage to assist Kartana and Volcanion to clean up teams.

kartana.gif

The Paper Ninja (Kartana) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off
- Sacred Sword
- Smart Strike
Kartana has been a really good member of most of my teams and is the mon I look to when I need a late-game sweeper. (sorry Regieleki) Armed with a Choice Scarf, it wipes away the opponent’s team like a broom sweeping away dust.
After Volcanion and Heatran clean up and heavily damage most of the enemy team’s mons, Kartana can easily snowball and sweep the remainder of the enemy’s team. Leaf Blade and Smart Strike are the main STAB- moves, Knock Off can easily help Kartana snowball, and Sacred Sword can hit steel types hard. An Adamant Nature and 252 EVs in Attack push its attack to monstrous levels. A Choice Scarf helps it outspeed Dragapult, which Kartana can easily OHKO with Knock Off.

garchomp.gif

Big Chomp (Garchomp) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock
- Swords Dance
Garchomp is the last member of my team, as he can take most Fire-type attacks well. Garchomp’s weaknesses, Ice, Fairy, and Dragon, are not much of a problem to this team. He is a powerful and deadly wincon, especially if it gets an SD up. It is also the rocker of my team as Landorus-T does not fit in my team quite well. It fits well in most of my teams like Kartana because of its versatility and strength. It has a good movepool and even better stats. Earthquake is a powerful STAB move that hits very hard, Stone Edge is used to hit mons that are immune to or resist Earthquake like Zapdos, Moltres, and Mandibuzz. Fire Fang can be used if you want to hit Corviknight, Rillaboom, Buzzwole, and Ferrothorn, but I prefer Stone Edge as flying types are much more of a problem.

Overall, this team was very fun to make and use.
This RMT took me so long to do.
Who’s your favorite mythical pokemon?
Well mine is Volcanion.

Lolz

i did my best.
I'd appreciate any feedback! :D

Pompeii
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes

Farewell,

OMG you know my next team is going to be Nature Power Heatran. That is some crazy tech.
Just a couple notes:
  1. It's not really HO since you have a Corv
  2. Maybe run some Spdef on Corv for Lele.
Other than that man am I going to abuse the hell out of Nature Power Tran

1. Renamed Bulky Offense. Keep on making that mistake LOL.
2. 88 Spdef should do right?
Thanks for the feedback!

I have a separate team with Nature Power Scarf Heatran + Specs Clawitzer Terrain Pulse + Rising Voltage/Terrain Pulse Specs Raichu. Unsuspecting Garchomp gets OHKO'ed in Misty Terrain with Moonblast by Heatran. It's funny.

Koko and Fini also provide really good coverage for both Heatran and Clawitzer.

did you think about giving corvi u-turn? volcanion, chomp, and rilla really appreciate slow turn support that corvi could provide (especially volc as it's kinda slow with no prio, and chomp because then it won't get its sash broken by some random move on the switch), and even though taunt helps with ferro and pex, tran can already handle them. Also maybe consider then swapping nature from impish to relaxed, as this helps you slow turn on AV mage and pelipper. also 0 speed IV's makes you slower than hippo meaning it can't EQ you on the roost

I really appreciate your post here :psywoke:
Good point, I will change my Corv set, thanks.

Extremely well made team, I had considered making a team like it and had almost the same team, aside from the fact I couldn't figure out getting over Fighting Weaknesses and abandoned it, but this is epic. I absolutely love the use of Chople berry for scouting and the unique use of Fire + Water move absorbing to deal with threats, very creative. To add, S-Lead Garchomp is something I have considered to be generally outclassed by S-Lead Landorus, although the Garchomp set is very nice with Sash + Rough Skin punishment and the niche of not needing to run Scarf to outspeed Tapu Lele Specs/LO.

Not much else to say aside from the same change of 0 Spe IVs and the Relaxed Nature with U-Turn as a slow-turner who gets a lot of appreciation in the team considering that this one seems to- although being solid- not enjoy momentum even as the team does have *some* source of recovery in Corv. However, once Corv is down the team begins to struggle with keeping up in getting damage recovery since you will not longer have a ground resist that won't be worn down as easily as Rillaboom is (which is why I hesitated to say a sub for Garchomp could be made for S-Lead Landorus. imo it could be done in this team at the expense of one Lele coverage, being as keeping Heatran and Rilla alive seems to be good make-up for this weakness).

Very well made team and keep the fun up, I look forward to seeing more of your teams in the future!

[EDIT]

The team does have an issue with Dragapult, as Garchomp/Landorus does not outspeed it and the team does not have an answer to it that is solid. Overall, you will make trades when facing it, thankfully Volcanion is a very good trade-opening mon that- as stated- 1-2HKOes a lot of its checks, even putting a nice dent in Blissey.

Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. :bloblul:
Yes, without Kart, this team struggles with Dragapult. Knock Off from a Jolly/Adamant Kart can easily OHKO Dragapult,
252 Atk Kartana Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 344-406 (108.5 - 128%) -- guaranteed OHKO,
if they're not scarfed.
Heatran does soak up hits well, whether Physical or Special Dragapult.

252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Shadow Ball vs. 84 HP / 104+ SpD Heatran: 129-153 (37.5 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Draco Meteor vs. 84 HP / 104+ SpD Heatran: 104-123 (30.2 - 35.7%) -- 33.9% chance to 3HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Dragapult Phantom Force vs. 84 HP / 160 Def Heatran: 148-175 (43 - 50.8%) -- 4.3% chance to 2HKO

+1 252 Atk Life Orb Dragapult Phantom Force vs. 84 HP / 160 Def Heatran: 222-263 (64.5 - 76.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It can fire back as well (doesn't do that much dmg but provides chip)
0 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragapult: 85-101 (26.8 - 31.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after trapping damage

Volcanion can do the rest.
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Dragapult Phantom Force vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcanion: 231-273 (76.7 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragapult: 187-221 (58.9 - 69.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
