Overview
The new generation has blessed the Fairy-types, possibly making them now stronger than they could ever possibly be. However, Steel-types and Poison-types continue to be the bane of existence of fairies. And here comes the ever-so-powerful Scarf Togekiss in play. While the defensive variant with paraflinch has been somewhat nerfed and Togekiss itself doesn't offer resistance to the Steel-and Poison-types, it offers a neat Ground immunity and can hit the aforementioned types with Fire- and Fighting-type moves and the ever so slow Poison-types bar Crobat, Mega-Beedrill and Scolipede. However, new speedy Poison-types were introduced, namely Salazzle, Silvally and Nihilego, the latter one especially resisting Air slash and Aura Sphere, stopping ScarfKiss on its tracks. However, Togekiss is still the powerful flincher we know form previous generations, and thus should be not underestimated.
Choice Scarf Set
Togekiss @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Modest/Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Air Slash
- Aura Sphere/Ancient Power
- Fire Blast
- Dazzling Gleam/Ancient Power
Togekiss reaches a 256 Speed stat, paired with a Choice Scarf we have a speedy tanky powerhouse in the team. Air Slash should be used most of the time because of its high flinch rate. The rest are excellent coverage moves.
Set Details
Sadly, a ScarfKiss just doesn't have any room for defensive investments, so a simple spread is sufficient. Modest Nature is used to possibly OHKO Garchomp and several other key threats, whereas the Timid Nature helps outspeeding some threats. Aura Sphere helps against Heatran and Dazzling Gleam against Dragon-Types, however Fire Blast offers similar coverage to Aura Sphere and Air Slash to Dazzling Gleam, so switching one of the moves out for Ancient Power is quite alright thanks to Serene Grace and offensive coverage of Rock. Fire Blast is a must on this set, otherwise Scizor, Excadrill, Skarmory & Co. force you very quickly out.
Team Options
Defensively, Magearna, Primarina and Togekiss form a neat combo. Magearna protects Togekiss from Steel-and Poison-Type attacks and Primarina from Grass-type attacks, Primarina protects Togekiss from Ice- and Steel-Type attacks and Magearna from Fire-Type attacks and Togekiss protects Primarina from Grass-Type attacks and Magearna from Ground-Type attacks. For situations where ScarfKiss has to be swapped out a lot, Tapu Fini is a neat Defogger that not only boosts all Fairy-Type attacks, but also clears out Stealth Rocks to minimize the damage received to Togekiss.
Tanky Set
Togekiss @ Babiri Berry/Kebia Berry/Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Air Slash
- Thunder Wave/Heal Bell/Defog/Body Slam
- Fire Blast/Heal Bell/Defog
- Roost
This Togekiss gets impressively bulky and is definitively something to be considered on a balanced Fairy-type team. The two main purposes of this set is to paralyze the opponent and flinch them away while you Roost off any damage you received, and to provide a solid check to either Mega-Venusaur or to Mega-Scizor.
Set Details
A maximal defensive bulk is needed for the set to be most effective, but some SpecialDefense investments are also great, especially if you intend to check Mega-Venusaur. It is possible to replace Thunder Wave for Body Slam to paralyze Ground-Types, or Thunder Wave or Fire Blast to an utility move. However, if you're replacing Fire Blast, you would need to have a Pokémon on your team, that is capable of checking Mega-Scizor if you don't run Fire Blast or if you want to check Mega-Venusaur.
Team Options
This Togekiss is more capable of defending its own, however, the defensive combo including Magearna and Primarina is recommendable. Like with the previous set, Tapu Fini is a nice Defogger and shields Togekiss from any unnecessary Steel damage. Ribombee and Scarf Silvally can deal with the faster threats, since the 90% accuracy on Thunder Wave/ 60% chance to paralyze on Body Slam might hurt.
Other Options
A Nasty Plot set is nice, so is a Baton Passing set. Trick, Yawn, Wish , Counter, Extreme Speed and Encore are just a few cool examples of how versatile Togekiss can be. Use Tri Attack for the maximum salt levels.
Counters
A Scarfed Nidoking means trouble for Togekiss, as it outspeeds and Sludge Waves Togekiss, which dents it severely. If Scizor has enough Sword Dances up, Babiri Berry can't save you. Also, Fire Blast missing is not good when facing Steel-Types. Finally, Electric-Types wall Togekiss nicely, mostly because Togekiss can't hit them hard with any of its coverage moves and Togekiss also can't paralyze them. Finally, Stealth Rocks are quite the problem for Togekiss, especially the Choice Scarf variant.
