Gen 3 OU Medi Boom Spam

An offensive, mag-less offense team which I built. Not as many ttars on the ladder right now and this team matches up well into other teams trying to abuse the lack of sand. It peaked around 1670 on the ladder. Posting this now because I am pretty new, would love to get some feedback and also because I stopped using it as much because I want to try and get better using more balanced teams even if that means losing some ranking.
The main idea is to trade off against key threats (celebi, gengar, mixed mence, some zapdos, enemy boom users, enemy suicunes) to setup suicune. Alternatively, you often can win by using suicune to trade off against multiple pokemon on the other team (2for1 them) and then just boom spam the game out.

Medicham lead mindgames allow you to win ~25% of games in the first 3-5 turns. Snorlax, metagross, claydol and swampert are all excellent because they represent immediate threats while still being able to switch in against a large number of mons. Finally, suicune wins many endgame scenarios.

Medicham @ Lum Berry
Ability: Pure Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brick Break
- Focus Punch
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
An extremely threatening lead. I use a mixture of poker-like ranges (which I vary depending on the ELO of the opponents) and, later in the game, tendencies to determine what to do. Here are some samples
  • TTar
    • 1000-1400 ELO sub
    • 1400-1600 ELO 60% sub, 40% BB
    • 1600+ 60% BB, 40% sub
  • Skarm
    • 1000-1550 ELO: sub, these players love to run drill peck on their lead skarms
    • 1550+ 50/50 FP, sub
  • Mence (Your worst matchup)
    • 1000-1500 ELO switch to claydol, outplay later
    • 1500 ELO+ switch to either swampert or suicune, they usually click Fireblast if they are reading rather than HP Grass, if they are physical or CB both are fine
  • Zapdos (Should be bad, usually is fine)
    • 1000-1550 ELO BB, they love clicking mid grounds like sub and TWave. Never click sub
    • 1550+ 60% BB, 40% switch into lax. Never click sub
    • Expect Gengars for some reason
  • Metagross
    • Less ELO dependent more meta dependent, the current meta is way down on CB meta so just clicking BB is a good idea, I also like sub'ing first then going claydol because they don't want to miss a mash so they click EQ
    • 50/50 sub/BB
  • Sleep Leads
    • 1000-1500 ELO sub
    • 1500+ ELO 70% best attack/30% sub (abuse that lum)
Key Threats this needs to take out
  1. Gengar, use the lum to get it in if it switched out earlier, be very willing to trade your life for a SB hit. A lot of people building this style team often have a pursuit tar but we accept a worse Gengar matchup overall for more immediate power
  2. Celebi, otherwise you really need to boom it which can be hard

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Sleep Talk
- Calm Mind
- Rest
Your win con OR one of many 2for1 threats on the team. Not much to say other than make sure you figure out if you need to go down to just suicune if the other team has roar pokemon left. Plays very standard for RestTalk Suicune. Notable matchups for endgames for newer players
  • Beats Zapdos if you get a CM up first, (Take TBolt at +1, CM to +2, Rest, Talk Talk, Rest etc)
  • Sometimes beats CM Blissey but very RNG heavy
  • Loses to sub seed stuff like breloom and celebi
  • Beats mixed mence without sand
  • Beats Roar Suicune if you go down to just this (very important to recognize)

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Immunity
EVs: 104 HP / 116 Atk / 144 Def / 144 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Body Slam
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Punch
- Self-Destruct
Your temporary special "wall". If this needs to trade a wisp into gengar you often need to do it as gengar is a major threat. Click BSlam most of the time rather than SB because bulky Metagross is everywhere right now and a para is huge. FP is really just for skarm/other spikers. At lower ELO's boom more, at higher ELO's BS more as this team is slow as dirt and really appreciates the para's.

Claydol @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Atk / 40 SpA
Brave Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Psychic
- Explosion
Shockingly effective, Claydol helps with hazards which suicune, lax and meta all hate, booms, trades with mixed mence and is a good metagross switch in if you are careful. Helps with Gengar. Don't be afraid to midground Psychic in obvious EQ situations. Mindgaming switching it into situations where it is "obviously" gonna boom and then clicking psychic can help deal with key threats or snipe a Gengar. At lower ELO's just boom.

Metagross @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake
- Explosion
- Protect
A true MVP on the team, threatening breaker whose explosion will take out key threats. At lower ELO's booming right away is often a good call, but as your ranking increases above 1550-ish I recommend attacking more and being more patient with your booms. Depending on the matchup, you either want to freely boom this (against special offense teams) or lax (against physical offense teams). This is also your boom switch in against opposing boom teams, chip healing it back up to about 30-40 in order to enable it to find its own opportunity to boom

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Def / 24 SpA / 116 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Earthquake
- Ice Beam
- Protect

Swampert plays multiple roles on the team but the two most important are rock-resist and as something that can kill mixed mence (albeit badly). It is ev'ed to kill the most common mixed mence set 100% of the time with ice beam while increasing its SpD enough that it takes less from an HP Grass than most calc'ing players realize. Hydro pump is threatening to a lot of teams and it does a good job maintaining momentum, stopping sweeps as well as often helping win endgame scenarios

I like the idea of an offensive alternative lead in ADV and utilizing sub. That is not something I’ve been too much of. Seems tough not running more coverage but it’s not like Medicham often gets the chance to click more than 1 or 2 moves with his fragility and speed tier.
I see no reason why common leads Zap or Suicune can’t just click stab electric/water respectively.

I like how boom is prevalent on this team and can just delete any answers. Do you feel there’s any reason you couldn’t get beyond 1670 with the team?

I really like this team, thanks for sharing!

I can see strong earthquakes giving you issues. Of course you got claydol but once that blows up or gets sniped, you can pretty much spam EQ against this team.

Also how do you deal with heracross? I feel like banded megahorn or jolly SD could 6-0 this team. It's not the most common 'mon in OU but definately worth consideration.

I'm not sure what to suggest in all honesty. You need speed and you have 3 pretty solid rock resists in the team (medi doesnt count let's be real). Maybe one of those rock resists could be replaced with gengar instead. It provides your team with some speed and can break things with taunt/explosion etc, keeping to your theme. The fact that gengar even exists on a team makes any choice band user think twice before clicking EQ or explode.

Wish I could be more helpful, hope my insight proves useful to you :)

I like your idea of adding a gengar! I don't know who to replace. It feels like Medicham is the one that can go out more than any other pokemon but thats kinda the idea behind the team
