Oscars/Golden Globes thread

No idea if people are interested in such a thing, but 2013 Oscar nominations are out:

( I considered posting in the movies thread but there's a significant amount of discussion about old/classic movies and I didn't want shit like le miserablesbians clogging it up)

http://oscar.go.com/nominees

I don't really like any of the feature films except for SLP. I hope that Christoph Waltz wins for Inglorious Basterds, though. Are these picks good? shitty? is the academy a farce? share your opinion so i can steal it and sound smart in conversations with intelligent people!!

Also, talk about the Golden Globes results / winners / share your complaints here!!!

The picks are better this because the movies are better this year. Yeah a lot of people are gonna be mad about Avengers not being nominated, but I'd personally love to see Lincoln or Silver Linings Playbook win over it.

Argo or Silver Linings Playbook will win best picture. SLP deserves it, but Argo has been making a huge effort to get noticed (and so good so far). Sad to see Cloud Atlas not nominated, critics suck. I am fucking stunned that Zero Dark Thirty is nominated. Ad campaign wise, everything made me think that movie would be shit (obv critics like it).

Bradley Cooper could win best actor, but Daniel Day Lewis probably will.

Jennifer Lawrence will win best actress, it is a grave injustice if she does not.

I respect every one of the choices for Supporting Actor, but Christoph Waltz edges out the competition slightly.

Anne Hathaway will win supporting actress, she is probably the only reason Les Mis is even nominated for best picture.

Animated films sucked this year.

No matter who wins Cinematography and Costume Design they'll have stolen it from Cloud Atlas. Directing I could give to Silver Linings though, but I'd still have given it to Cloud Atlas.

Big flubs are no Cloud Atlas (duh), no Seven Psychopaths, only one nomination for Moonrise Kingdom.

i loved the avengers, but i'm pulling for life of pi to win for best special effects, i aw that shit in 3d and it was mind blowing, for real

I haven't seen many of the nominated films but I, like other posters here, really liked SLP. I don't think it'll win best picture (up against Lincoln and Argo? mehh). I hope it wins something big, it definitely deserves it. I was a little surprised that The Dark Knight Rises wasn't nominated for anything, if I'm not mistaken. It wasn't crazy good like The Dark Knight but it could've won best effects at least.

also poor poor leonardo

pure sadness

if your favorite movie doesn't win (or wasn't nominated), who gives a fuck. if you like it, that's good enough for you

The nominees are so much better than last year.

Can I just say that that Best Supporting Actress nomination for Jacki Weaver is so... random? Like, most of the praise for Silver Lining Playbook has been focused on Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro, and Weaver hasn't been nominated for anything else besides cast awards! Not that I'm complaining; it was a good performance and at least it's more interesting that, say, Maggie Smith for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel or something. Anne Hathaway is almost certainly going to win anyway (I think only Sally Field has the real chance to upset her at the moment but I don't think it's going to happen).

I think that's the only real surprise inclusion in the acting catagories.

Also surprised that Affleck and Bigelow weren't nominated for Best Director, and how The Dark Knight Rises and Cloud Atlas didn't get nominated for... anything (not even technical awards).

Yeah 2nd to the Wachowski I would have given Ben Affleck best director. He can get the most out of even the worst lead actors.

I think that Lincoln will sweep the Oscars. It got nominated for 13 different Oscars, and from what I've heard both from others and news articles, it's brilliant, even better than The Argo, and it is the front-runner for winning Best Actor and Best Picture. This is coming from someone who hasn't even seen the film yet.

Also Avengers got nominated for best visual effects. It got its nomination. It's sad to not see the Dark Knight rises nominated for anything though.

Oh I think it is quite a bit better than Argo, but it is still not as good as Silver Linings. It really feels too conventional and obvious, I don't think it will win the campaign in the end.

I would just like to say Silver Linings is one of the most absurdly wonderful films I've ever had the pleasure to lay my eyes on.

So there. That's my minimal contribution.

Best Picture -
Silver Linings or Lincoln will win. Django was only nominated because of Tarentino, I loved the movie but it doesn't have a shot in hell at winning and the academy does this every year. He gets nominated but never wins (bar Pulp iirc) but thats in a whole different ball field.

Best Actor -
I seriously like everyone here but Joaquin and if he or The Master wins anything, i'll be dissapointed. I really hope that Daniel doesn't get his 3rd win and seeing Denzel OR Bradley Cooper snag it would be incredible. Even Hugh Jackman but im sure he won't win.

Best Actress -
This is a tossup lol, someone obscure always wins this shit. Quvenzhané Wallis or Emmanuelle Riva will win or some shit rofl. I want Lawrence tho lol.

Robert DeNiro and Waltz for Supporting as well as Hathaway :)

There seems to be a lot of expectations for SLP in this thread? It pretty much has no hype or momentum going into award season so don't expect it to win the big awards.

Best Picture - Lincoln
I would have expected Zero Dark 30 to win it, but then Bigelow didn't get nominated for best director so it seems inevitable Lincoln wins

Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis

Actress - Emmanuelle Riva
Partly me being hopeful and partly because I don't think the other candidates are appropriate

Supporting Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman

Supporting Actress - Anne Hathaway
She's due

Animation - Brave

Cinematography - Lincoln
Life of Pi is the only other realistic choice imo

Directing - Spielberg
Though how cool would it be for Haneke to win this

Foreign - Amour

Adapted Screenplay - Lincoln

Original Screenplay - Moonrise Kingdom

I expect Lincoln to do exceedingly well. I'm not sure if it appealed to me because I enjoy history, but the performances and the screenplay were phenomenal. Tommy Lee Jones would have stolen the show if not for the profundity of Daniel Day-Lewis' performance.

I see the hype all over this thread. Anyone who saw it wants it to win.

Yeah I think people need to take Silver Lining's Playbook more seriously as a potential winner now. Before the nominations were announced I was confident for Argo winning, but the fact that Ben Affleck missed out on Best Director isn't a good sign. There have been like 3 films in the history of the awards that have won Best Picture without receiving a Best Director nomination (Driving Miss Daisy and a couple of movies from the 30's I think) so it seems so unlikely now.

Silver Lining's Playbook did a lot better than some expected, including myself. I did not expect 8 nominations, and some of those were very surprising. It suggests that there is a lot of good will for the film within the academy so I can definitely see it (and its director) winning. That could change in the next month or so though.

Some predictions:

Best Picture - Silver Lining's Playbook
Best Director - David O. Russell
Best Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis
Best Actress - Jennifer Lawrence
Best Supporting Actor - Tommy Lee Jones
Best Supporting Actress - Anne Hathaway
Best Original Screenplay - Moonrise Kingdom or Django Unchained (honestly I can't decide)
Best Adapted Screenplay - Lincoln
Best Visual Effects - Life of Pi
Best Animated Feature - Wreck-It Ralph
Best Documentary Feature - Searching For Sugarman
Best Foreign Language Film - Amour

Can't believe Ben Affleck wasn't nominated for Best Director, Argo was the best movie of the year imo now it's seems it's more difficult to win Best Picture. DDL is guaranteed to win Best Actor and hopefully Jen Lawrence win Actress. Also want the Hobbit to win some awards in the effects department. Adele should also win for Skyfall, it was a cool song. Sad that Looper didn't get nommed for Best Original Screenplay, it was awesome.

EDIT: Fuck yeah Argo, winning Best Drama and Best Director! I thought Silver Linings would win Best Comedy / Musical and also Bradley Cooper, but oh well and happy for Jen. Kinda bullshit how Game Of Thrones wasn't nommed for best Drama Series, they always snub Fantasy pieces, even though it's the best show on t.v!

Brave won best picture...

Are you kidding me?!?

Brave was bad... like direct-to-video bad. I can't believe it won out over Wreck-it-Ralph, Paranorman or Frankeinweiner. Those moves got robbed.
I hope the oscars aren't as shitty.

I don't know that any animated film deserves an Oscar but if I hope for one thing it is that Wreck-It-Ralph does not win. I go into great detail about this in the Wreck-It-Ralph thread.

Anyway it is a sick joke that SLP was even nommed in the "Comedy" category.

I've seen very few of the nominees, and I kinda want to just quote this and post in this format:

So far, Argo has won Critic's Choice Awards AND the Golden Globe. Even if it was snubbed for directing, I'd say it has a good chance. Not only that, but Lincoln was a heavily flawed movie; and I know the academy really has no idea what they're doing but I'm sure even they can tell that.

Actor & Supp. Actress are obvious.

Supp. Actor I'd have to go with TLJ, although I didn't care for him too much in Lincoln I'd still say he has a good shot to win, even though PSH is quite possibly the greatest working actor.

I honestly just don't see Spielberg getting best director; that might be because I don't think he's made a good film since Jaws, but it's also just because Lincoln was such a flawed movie and even in BD there is a lot of competition there.

Animation is pretty up in the air imo, I'd say it'll most likely go to Frankenweenie but to be honest I have no literal idea.

I really, really hope Moonrise wins, and it was a travesty it wasn't nominated for more (I'm looking at you, Best Picture) but I'm not too sure about adapted screenplay. But I really liked Moonrise, Django, and Flight so idc really.

My money's on Argo right now, but hey I could be wrong.

The academy might have no idea what they are doing at all but I wouldn't throw stones in glass houses.
