Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly changing. However there has always been and always will be threats. Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle top-tier threats. That's where you guys come in! This project aims to gather some of the common top-tier threats in the metagame and find Pokémon that can either check or counter them.

Procedure:

1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokémon for discussion. Within one week's time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week, with a description explaining how they can do that (look at other nominations for example!).

2. After the deadline, I will choose the top three checks and the top three counters. Should there be a lot of nominations, I will discuss my choices with other skilled players to ensure the selections are not biased and that all nominations have been considered thoroughly.

3. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

Rules:

Update: to avoid confusion, everyone has to post damage calcs when they're submitting their check/counter. This makes it easier for everyone to see how effective the Pokemon in question is as a check/counter.

4. Only post sets viable in RU. Niche Pokemon such as Roselia or Probopass are totally acceptable, but bottom-of-the-barrel stuff like Electivire and Shedinja aren't. The viability ranking thread is your best friend, so if something isn't ranked there, 95% of the time it's not worth posting here.

5. From Saturday - Tuesday, each person can only nominate one Pokemon. From Wednesday to Friday, you can nominate as many as you want.

6. Help people out if you think they're wrong, but please be nice.

7. Do be creative.

OK, so the EVs are obvious-max special bulk for special tanking, then 4 Defense EVs, which crucially do help avoid the 2HKO from Psyshock (I already had them there, the calc's spread didn't). Careful nature is much of the same, -SpA because you're not using it.

IVs: Oh i'm sorry, were you trying to use Power Split to boost your Special Attack? DENIED. It's not like you were using that SpA for anything anyhow

Moves:

Stealth Rock: Stealth Rock is the best move in the game, probably. Every team needs it, and Cradily can carry it...it's a match made in heaven. (Actually Cradily sucks at getting up SR and keeping it up, but team compression is nice regardless)

Recover: Reliable recovery kicks ass for a wall.

Rock Slide: reliable STAB. every mon needs this.

Swords Dance: here is it, the elephant in the room.

Giga drain doesn't do that much for Cradily, since it doesn't really wall that much stuff it'd hit with it, and most of the Pokemon that it could hit on the switch-in are afraid of Giga Drain regardless. Swords Dance lets you beat Sigilyph that could otherwise Roost-stall (the original reason I carried it), helps you beat SubCM meloetta, lets you check certain bulky CM pokemon, is just cool, helps repulse Defog Golbat and Togetic too (they can otherwise defog in your face).

Choice Specs Jolteon is a nice check to Sigilyph because it has a nice typing advantage vs Sigilyph. Jolteon finds it a bit difficult to switch-in vs Sigilyph's Psychock as that does a lot, but after switching-in Jolteon will be faster and can OHKO Sigilyph with a single Thunderbolt/Volt Switch, which makes Jolteon a great revenge killer.

Specs Meloetta doesn't care about what Sigilyph can do offensively. Even the super (and I mean SUPER) rare Dark Pulse has no chance of 2HKOing Meloetta. Psyshock from Sigilyph does 30.7% maximum while Specs Hyper Voice from Meloetta has a 50% chance to OHKO Sigilyph in return. You could be really cheeky and use Shadow Ball for the OHKO, but I think Hyper Voice is doing more than enough considering Sigi can't even 3HKO Meloetta. I don't think I need to explain why Specs Meloetta is good outside of countering Sigilyph. Dazzling Gleam > U-turn because you're 2HKOing the whole tier with the right move anyway.

Resttalk probopass walls sigi completely, the best sigi can hope for with that set is a 6hko. Twave + power gem means it will eventually be beaten, if you want sr can be run over twave I guess. Probo switches in and walls even if there are 3 layers of spikes and rocks up so probopass is a LO sigi counter.

Pretty simple stuff, you outspeed after mega and kill with double-edge, don't like return because even though you don't take recoil, when you factor in the refrigerate boost, double-edge hits much harder.

This has a similar premise to Specs Jolteon, where it can switch in to most of Sigilyph's attacks, but should still be careful with coverage (Heat Wave, in this case). Thunderbolt OHKO's, while volt switch causes a large chunk of damage.

Alomomola as a soft counter.

EVs: 120 HP / 136 Def / 252 SpD

While Mola doesn't resist anything but Ice Punch, it can tank its other moves decently. Earthquake and Stone Edge are only 6.6% chance for a 2HKO. Protect can be used guarantee a 3HKO. Scald is a guaranteed 2HKO with a 30% burn chance. Wish + Protect can be used to rack up some Life Orb damage as well.

I put this as a soft counter because if the opponent has any entry hazards bar Sticky Web, Mola's chances of being 2HKO goes up dramatically. Protect can help mitigate this, but it still makes you reliant on damage rolls. It also relies on Mola being at full HP, but with Regenerator and wish, that's pretty easy.

Life orb megahorn hurts but tangy can still switch into SR and a megahorn. The evs hit enough speed for max rhyperior so once you take a hit you outspeed and kill it. Pretty straight forward really, regen allows you to come back in later. You could even run synthesis to continually deal with rhyp as that plus regen cancels out megahorn damage.

Virizion is a nice check to Rhyperior as it has a huge typing advantage vs it. Virizion can easily come in vs Rhyperior's STAB moves, while switching in if Rhyperior predicts right and uses Ice punch, things can get nasty for Virizion as Ice punch has 44% chance to OHKO Virizion but Virizion can easily come in vs a predicted Earthquake and Stone Edge and a single Giga Drain from Virizion OHKO's Rhyperior.
