OU ORAS OU Magic Matchmaking - Round 7: Diggersby!

:sv/Scizor-Mega:

I have a proud entry to a magical partner in the quest of matchmaking for Dragonite. It's name is Mega-Scizor. There are three things that D-nite dislikes seeing the most I think. Stealth Rocks which ruins multiscale on switch in. Fairies that are immune to your Stab move and shoot moon blasts that ruin your day (Clefable, etc), and anything that's cold frozen and ice shaped. Coincidentally Mr. Mega Scizor can deal with all of these problems to help pave the way for D-nite to ruin the other players day. There are a plethora of sets you could potentially run. I am just going to share what set I was working with, but note other things that mega Scizor provide also could work.

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 24 Def / 124 SpD / 96 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance / Roost
- Bullet Punch
- Defog
- Knock Off

This is the EV spread from ruffles compendium post. It's a good spread. Credit to him. The ice and fairy resist helps make a switch in a little smoother for Scizor. Just be careful of flamethrower Clef(the true devil). Bullet punch slaps both weav and clef which threaten D-Nite heavily. Swords dance is to help make sure you can definitely break through. Roost is an option as well to give more longevity. The team I was using was an offensive team with Cress so it didn't feel as needed all the time. Defog removes the almighty stealth rocks. Don't use these friends together on spike stack. Knock off to help with breaking down slowbros, tias, fat ghosts that looks like coffins, and just make rh, eviolites, and leftovers disappear because the chip DMG, DMG prevention, and additional healing all slow down D-Nite just a little bit and making them gone greases the wheels for the D-nite pain train. Cheers.

serperior.gif

Serperior @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 200 HP / 44 Def / 12 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Rock] / Hidden Power [Fire]
- Glare
- Rest

Serperior is great into bulky Water-types that otherwise sit on Dragonite such as Slowbro and Alomomola since it uses them to grab free Leaf Storm boosts. Serperior can beat one of Dragonite's biggest checks in Clefable with Leaf Storm boosts. Hidden Power Rock is used for the pesky flyers such as Zapdos and Thundurus who can threaten Dragonite with fast paralysis and Hidden Power Ice however you can also run Hidden Power Fire to smack Ferrothorn and Skarmory to avoid Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet chip.
Resto Chesto allows Serp to also act as a pseudo status absorber by eating Will-O-Wisp from Rotom and Thunder Wave from Clefable while Glare let's Serp paralyse would be checks such as the afformentioned Clefable making it harder for them to stop a Dragonite sweep. Serperior also has a relatively high base speed of 113 that let's it outrun and beat other checks to Dragonite such as Mega Diancie (when not running Earthquake) with the an OHKO from Leaf Storm
Aside from the support Serperior provides Dragonite, Dragonite also helps Serperior by beating Steel-types who otherwise wall it such as Heatran with its Fire resistance coupled with Earthquake.

The broken one and barney, what's not to love?

Evs don't really matter but I'll give you the most basic of spreads here

Volcarona @ Lum Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Flamethrower
- Bug Buzz
- Giga Drain

This demon is too customizable and they offensively compliment eachother beautifully by overwhelming eachother's checks when you take out one but not the other. Weavile locked into crash? Moth has field day, just used volcanion to 1v1 moth?? Dnite comes in. I'd argue this offensive duo is about on the same level of terror as cloyster + moth due to dnite's broken priority in e-speed.

Ah yes Dragonite. My favorite pokemon. It is a great pokemon in gen 6 ou but it has quite a few problems such as a stealth rock weakness that makes it lose multiscale, a lack of reliable flying stab (which is especially problematic this gen), and most importantly a deep fear of the brand-new type introduced this generation which we know as the fairy type. The main issue that the fairy type brings is that it stops Dragonite from properly using its best stab move (Outrage) as fairy type pokemon are immune to dragon type moves (the type Outrage is). However, besides that problem it usually handles the viable fairy type pokemon in the tier themselves reasonably well by itself. With proper play Dragonite is usually able to use its other attacks (usually Extreme Speed and Earthquake) to take out said fairies. However, there is one fairy type that Dragonite fears above else and one that even it can't take down.

Clefable was one of the older gen pokemon to get the fairy vaccine in gen 6 to protect it from the deadly dragon virus. It was able to use this power to not only destroy most dragon types but also become the (not) undisputed second best pokemon in gen 6 ou. Even before this generation Clefable was still a really solid defensive pokemon (even earning its place as a top tier in gen 4 ou) but it was one of the many pokemon in gen 5 that got bowled over by powerful Outrages from the likes of Garchomp, Kyurem Black, and what do you know my boy Dragonite. However, with this generation Clefable would be a victim of dragon abuse no more. It is an insane wall with only 2 weaknesses which are poison and steel. As it happens most dragons don't have attacks for those types in their movepool (or don't have room for them) and one of those dragons is Dragonite. To put it simply none of Dragonite's moves have the pure strength needed to kill Clefable even at plus 1 attack. Even Fly (Dragonite's best flying stab) only 2 hit kos at plus 1 and since Clefable can just use Soft-Boiled on the non-attacking turn (it is a 2 turn move) it doesn't even matter. Not to mention sometimes Clefable uses Unaware as an ability over Magic Guard and then Dragonite is truly helpless. Clefable is unique in the fact that it serves as both an offensive and defensive check to Dragonite as it easily tanks its attacks and fires back a super effective Moonblast that Dragonite can only survive 1 turn against.

Now of course there are plenty of answers to Clefable that probably work far better than the answer I am going to give such as Excadrill, Mega Metagross, both Scizors, etc. However, since Dragonite is my favorite pokemon (and it would be funny) I feel like I should use this oppurtunity to highlight another solid Clefable answer and Dragonite teammate and that pokemon is the one THE ONLY

Gengar @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Focus Blast
- Taunt

The main reason I chose this set is because Dragonite is usually on offensive teamstyles and this Gengar set synergizes well with offense. This isn't the only set you can use of course but it is the simplest to explain.

Gengar is a great answer to Clefable for multiple reasons. With this set specifically Gengar 2hkoes a max special defense (with special defense nature) Clefable at +1 special defense and ohkoes out right against every set in teambuilder using its stab Sludge Wave. Despite Gengar's severe lack of bulk it can also easily tank Moonblast (which it resists thanks to its poison typing) and even Ice Beam/Flamethrower thanks to Clefable's below average special attack. Gengar also has taunt in its movepool to prevent Clefable from healing, setting hazards/status, or even using Calm Mind so that even if Gengar doesn't have the means to beat Clefable it can at least force it out.

Gengar is also a great teammate as it is a solid spin blocker (thank you ghost type), which allows hazards to stay up making the opposing pokemon easier to kill for Dragonite. It is the second fastest viable Will O Wisp user making it easier for Dragonite to set up against physical threats. It outspeeds/speed ties multiple big threats to Dragonite and is able to kill or annoy most of them. Some big ones include Mega Gardevoir, Mega Metagross, the Lati twins and their megas, Mega Gallade, Kyurem Black (Focus Blast or Will O Wisp accuracy permitting), Mega Altaria and plenty of others I am surely forgetting.

All of these points are good reason to use Gengar as both a teammate to Dragonite and in general. Of course, there are probably better teammates for Dragonite such as Thundurus I or Serperior but I love Dragonite and I feel it deserves a more interesting answer than just another top tier. Gengar is still a good pokemon in general even if, like Starmie, it is starting to show its age. It may be incredibly scared of dark types like Tyranitar and Bisharp but it is a pokemon with many useful immunities, plenty of utility options, and a really high special attack even in gen 6.

Thank you for reading.

Since three days have already passed, I am now eligible to submit another entry for this round.

Priorities are an effective way to check Dragonite. Pokémon such as Talonflame, Mega Lopunny, and Weavile can pick off a weakened Dragonite using their respective priority moves. Physical walls like Clefable, Slowbro, Quagsire, Mega Altaria, Hippowdon, and Skarmory excel at handling Dragonite as well. Additionally, bulky offensive Pokémon can check Dragonite due to their resilience and coverage options: Manaphy with Ice Beam, Landorus-Therian with Stone Edge, Mega Gyarados with Ice Fang, and Mega Tyranitar with either Stone Edge or Ice Punch.

:xy/cloyster:
Cloyster @ King's Rock / Focus Sash / Life Orb / Lum Berry
Level: 100
Jolly Nature
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Rapid Spin / Hydro Pump / Hidden Power Grass / Explosion / Protect

Cloyster is an exceptional partner for Dragonite, as it can outright beat some of the mentioned Dragonite checks or at least exert significant pressure on them. Thanks to its remarkable physical defense, Cloyster can withstand Brave Bird from Talonflame, Ice Shard from Weavile, and Fake Out from Mega Lopunny, even after a Shell Smash. Moreover, Cloyster can handle or pressure physical walls such as Clefable, Skarmory, Slowbro, Hippowdon, Quagsire, and Mega Altaria. It also threatens bulky offensive Pokémon like Manaphy, Landorus-Therian, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Tyranitar. Finally, Cloyster's access to Rapid Spin ensures that Dragonite’s Multiscale ability remains intact by clearing hazards from the field.

Well guys, we have our 2nd winner! Congratulations to Ithi for winning this weeks round! Hope we can keep it going this way. But onto the next round.

Edit: There seems to be a tie between Ithi and GOATED im_m0rtal, so if anyone wants to cast the tiebreaker vote, theyre free to do so. My bad.

Round 3: Mega Alakazam
:sv/alakazam mega:
Alakazam-Mega @ Alakazite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Taunt / Recover / Encore / Substitute
Mega Alakazam is frequently held as one of the tier's best Megas. But why doesn't it make the cut as 'the best' one? Thirty percent. It's that damned 30%. We all know the move. But anyways, Mega Alakazam is one of the tier's best attackers with an incredibly versatile 4th moveslot. With options in Taunt to beat Pokémon that try to negate its damage through recovery, and halt it through status. Recover keeps it healthy, allowing it to continuisly come in over and over again on offensively weaker Pokémon it threatens. Encore lets it lock an opponent into a move (duh), and Substitute makes it harder to dance around the magician. Psychich might not seem that strong, but coming off a 175 spatk turns it into an absolutely busted move. Focus Blasts, while a gamble, allows it to break through its few resisted switches, and Shadow Ball covers for psychics that try to resist both. With such a crazy mon, it sure appreciates even crazier partners. So, what looney tunes partners can you think of?

I like bisharp w/ zam. Forming an exceptionally scary pursuit + psychic special attacking core, even zam appreciates pursuit support.

This dark can remove pesky psychics, also knock chansey off, or any other eviolite users. Acts as an 'emergency' serp check in a pinch and can also take a hit from weavile in those key trade wars. Also helps trade with demons like clef and mega diancie exceptionally well and can even jokingly harass zone a lot better!

Bisharp @ Assault Vest
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Iron Head
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch

Serperior @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 200 HP / 44 Def / 12 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Rock] / Hidden Power [Fire]
- Glare
- Rest

Serperior is a great Tornadus-Therian lure with Glare. Serperior can use Hidden Power Rock to also beat Thundurus who threatens Alakazam with fast paralysis. However you can also run Hidden Power Fire to smack Ferrothorn and Bisharp to who are massive pains for Alakazam to face. Resto Chesto allows Serp to also act as a pseudo status absorber by eating Thunder Wave from Clefable and Rotom-Wash while Glare let's Serp paralyse would be checks such as the afformentioned Clefable making it harder for them to stop an Alakazam sweep.
Aside from the support Serperior provides Alakazam, Alakazam also helps Serperior by pressuring opposing Steel-types who otherwise wall it such as Heatran with its Fire immunity from Trace coupled with Focus Blast.

:bw/weavile:

Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Low Kick
- Ice Shard

Low Kick baits steels, darks like bisharp, tyranitar which alakazam likes. Knock off for chansey to remove eviolite. Ice Shard is fast priority, helps to remove thundy. Icicle crash hits tornadus-t like a truck. Alakazam helps weavile's fire MU into tran by tracing flash fire. Also can KO serperior. Nothing much to be said, great pokemon, brings the best out of both of them.

week 3 continues with mix's submissions of serperior, showcasing how versatile it is :)

also week 2 needs a victor. chat was saying B is the play trust
Yeah I don't know I saw just as many people voting Magnezone than Volcarona. It is almost like he doesn't want people to see that Magnezone won too. But he would never do that right?

(Btw this isn't something to take seriously even if both Magnezone and Volcarona should be shown as the winner of the poll.)

very suspicious indeed
(slug won't ever do that hes too moral to do that...right?)

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Volt Switch
- Roost
- Hidden Power [Ice]/Toxic
- Heat Wave

Zapdos is a great partner. Alakazam struggles vs steels since focus blast will usually miss so you can send in Zapdos and wall most of them and gain momentum and potentially bring zam back in.
