ORAS Monotype is the official Monotype format for Gen 6. It was a turning point for the development of Monotype as a standout official metagame, and is fondly remembered by players who explored it when it was the current generation. Nowadays, it is still played in both room and forum tournaments.

Notably Different Mechanics from Gen 7:
  • Paralysis makes target 25% as fast instead of 50% as fast
  • Burn takes off 12% of the target's HP instead of 6%
  • Thunder Wave is 100% accurate
  • Mega Evolutions are only allowed on a type if the typing is shared with its original form. For example, Mega Charizard X is allowed on Fire, but not on Flying or Dragon
  • Mega evolving does not grant speed changes in the first turn
  • Gengar does have Levitate, and Mantine does not have Roost
  • Prankster does affect Dark-types
  • -ate abilties yield a damage multiplier of 1.3 instead of 1.2

I would like to drop off some ORAS monotype teams for samples and some VR stuff.
Steel
:Heatran: :Skarmory: :Ferrothorn: :Bronzong: :Jirachi: :Excadrill:
https://pokepast.es/693bdbb5d91c179d
I originally made this team for gens last year, but with Durant and a Choice Scarf Magnezone. Once Mega Medicham got banned, I thought that Durant is not needed anymore and since Flying- and Water-type usage was on the rise, it was time to replace Durant with a Jirachi to help with these matchups with a Calm Mind set. Psychic is better vs water, but Psyshock can be used to hit Chansey and other spD walls better. The other change was the Choice Scarf user. I found Magnezone very underwealming outside of the Steel mirror, and thought Excadrill would be better thanks to its abity allowing it to hit rotom forms and its Ground-typing. This team is made to be able to beat Normal, Water and have a chance against most types. Bronzong is the Rock setter and can scout the opp Pokemon with Protect to see what set it could be based on the first move that is used. Psywave allows it to do decent chip damage and can cripple switch ins and Pokemon that set up on it with Toxic. Next we have Skarmory, with Spikes to be a harzard stacking duo with Bronzong and be an emergency check to Volcorona if rocks aren’t up and phase it out with Whirlwind. Brave Bird is the move of choice to help with Bug-types like Yanmega and a weakened Volcorona. Ferrothorn is more of an oddity from its usual set, but Toxic allows it to surprise switchins like Slowbro, Victini and Staraptor with Toxic and therefoe crippling these Pokemon for the rest of the game. The other oddity on this team is Heatran, which sub is to serve as a way to stall out Pokemon and use Toxic on predicted switches. I put in Jirachi with a CM set to help with mus that can be bad for Steel like Water and Fighting as with its two attacks can greatly threaten these teams. Lastly, I went with Excadrill as the speed control because helps with Kyurem-B and be able to try to win the Fire-type matchup.

Dragon
:Latios: :Kyurem-Black: :Dragonite: :Hydreigon: :Garchomp: :Latias-Mega:

https://pokepast.es/ca48884987cefb59
Another team I like to submit is a Dragon team. Dragon was ironiacclly not the First type I used when I got into monotype in ORAS, as that was actually Ice LMAO, but still Dragon is the type that has a special place in my heart and one of my favorite types to play. This is close to the OG version I spammed when ORAS had a ladder back in 2015 (Yes, I am really from 2015 guys lmao) other than the Kyurem-B being Choice Scarf, Choice Scarf Earthquake Latios (yeah…) and the Hydreigon was Life Orb. Mega Latias is a great Calm Mind attacker thanks to its bulk, access to Roost and have access to Stored Power and Thunderbolt. It can use Refresh to help greatly in the Normal-type matchup as it does not have to be afraid of being status by Chansey’s Thunder Wave or Porygon2’s Toxic or vice virca. With using Thunderbolt and Stored Power, it can greatly tear apart Flying- and the Water-type mu once it sets up. Hydreigon is the Choice Specs user of this team as it can 2HKO most Steel-types and can greatly threaten Psychic-types with Dark Pulse. It is also very helpful against walls such as Gastrodon, Empoleon, Slowbro and Hippowdown that some of its teammates may struggle with. I like Tank Chomp in ORAS due to it being able to come in on a x2 Mega Scizor and killing it with Fire Blast or come in on other physical attackers like Excadrill, Terrakion and Mega Sharpedo and cause them major chip damage. Dragon Tail is also handy against set up attackers such as Mega Gyrarados that can cause major damage otherwise. Stealth Rock is a way to help chip Pokemon in matchups to help its teammates have an easier time with taking care of Pokemon. Dragonite is the same old Dragonite set. Extreme Speed helps to pick off a weakened Mega Gardevoir, sweep Electric once Rotom-W and Zapdos are majorly chipped, a weakened Mega Sharpedo and be able to take an attack from most things and kill it with one of its three moves thanks to multiscale that can greatly help against a Mega Scizor that Swords Dance once. Kyurem-B gives Dragon a useful Ice neutral and with its boltbeam coverage, help greatly in the Flying- and Water-type matchup. Earth Power gives it a way to kill Excadrill outside of sand in the Ground-type matchup while also being able to hit Empoleon and Rotom-W in the Water-type matchup. Lastly, we have Latios as the speed control and as the Defogger. Thanks to its high Speed stat, it can outpace the unboosted metagame and revenge kill a Mega Charizard X at x1 and sweep Fighting once Breloom’s Focus Sash is broken and Cobailon is weakened. Thunderbolt is for neutral coverage and gives it a way to hit most things neutrally.

Poison
:Drapion: :Venusaur-Mega: :Crobat: :Nidoking: :Gengar: :Scolipede:

https://pokepast.es/e457be3f458fed64
I made this for BLT I think, but it went to the trash can. With Scolipede and Choice Scarf Drapion, you stand a chance in the Psychic-type matchup. Scolipede is Jolly to enable it to outpace Lati@s after one Speed Boost. Venusaur + Gengar is really good against balance water, while Crobat and also Gengar serve as Ground immunites. Nidoking is able to greatly help out in the Steel-type matchup with pressuring all Steel-types with Flamethrower and Earth Power.

Steel

:Doublade: B ----> C The main niche of this Pokemon is gone, which was to create mindgames with Mega Medicham. This Pokemon niche is really a slow Bisharp at x2 to sweep the Psychic-type mu minus Meloetta, but in reality, Bisharp just does a lot more for Steel overall. The only other reason to use this Pokemon is to help with the Fighting-type mu to create mindgames with a Fighting-type locked into a Fighting move from Choiced Keldeo or Terrakion. I rather use another Pokemon like Jirachi or Magnezone when I build a new Steel-type team as it covers a lot more matchups than this hard one.

Bug

:Shuckle: B -------> D I understand this Pokemon is an alternative web settler, but that is really all it does as it does not help too much in any matchups when it comes to it as I would rather have galv to help greatly with the Water-type mu.

:Yanmega: C ------> B Yanmega is a great Life Orb sweeper on Bug as Hidden Power Ice helps with the Dragon- and Flying-type mus while its Flying-STAB helps greatly in taking down Fighting-types like Keldeo. It can also help with the Water-type mu with Giga Drain, which in my book does a lot more than Scliopede that it shares its current rank and has more of a niche like Mega Heracross.

Type VR

Move Dragon down to B. The main reason is it’s a high risk high reward type that can take care of most B rank types and Flying in S rank, but struggles with Psychic, Ground and can struggle with balance water if played right.

Move Bug up to A. While Bug vs flying is very uh bad lmao, Bug can fend its way though Water with webs + Yanmega + Mega Heracross, and as long as it is not Choice Scarf Victini, mow down Psychic as well.

That is it for right now, stay tuned for more sample ORAS monotype submissions and a post on some BW monotype stuff in a few days!

Hey! I'd like to contribute with a Grass team sample for ORAS, as there aren't any teams for it yet. This team had solid success throughout the metagame. I took the original and made several modifies to make it more "staple" and reliable (ex: replacing equake for leech seed on Mega-Venusaur since it can also beat defensive Heatran variants and is broadly effective versus many types in general, also Giga Drain looks more consistent on Whimsicott, so this replaced Psychic). Also feel free to make questions or make modifies to make it look more appropriate as a sample team should be.

This is basically standard balance Grass. EVs are pretty straightforward. 20 speed EVs on Mega-Venusaur to outspeed Adamant Azumarill after Belly Drum, while keeping it as much as physically bulk as possible. Also worth to note that 8 speed EVs on Cradily is not a meme, it allows it to outspeed +1 Volcarona after paralysis (remember paralysis speed cut is 1/4 in gen6 as opposed to 1/2 in gens 7 and 8). Specially defensive on Ferrothorn to handle Ice types like Kyurem-Black, as well as problematic special attackers like Gengar, Landorus-I and Togekiss, but can be reevaluated if needed.

EDIT: Put the team at the beginning of the post to make it clearer.

Would just like to point out that Vivillon should be moved up to at least C tier in VR for gen 6, though honestly I consider it more worth it for non mega pinsir builds than c tier mons scolipede in most matchups and even easier to put on a team than forretress in alot cases, it is definitively better for bug than durant which is the other D tier pokemon

For non mega Pinsir builds it's one of the greatest ways to turn a very difficult mirror matchup into one that you can easily control the situation of. It's a terrific anti lead in bug v ghost and bug v dragon, with bug v ghost vivillon being one of the best ways to prevent rocks coming onto bugs field, the only other way to prevent golurk's first turn rock setup is bullet seed megacross. In bug v dragon a first turn quiver dance can often lead to a scizor sweep later on due to its ability to incapacitate garchomp and in many cases break Dnites multiscale - all the while bringing momentum into bugs favor. Poison hates vivi with 0 flying resists gen 6 and its ability to force out mega venu. Its ability to force switches with the threat of sleep on wincons makes it a great partner for megacross as well, not to mention but drawing in special walls such as zapdos or empoleon allows for smart double switches to help break defensive cores. Similarly it has a powerful role in the bug v steel, with its speed tier being high compared to steel types. On non bronzong teams all vivillon asks for prior to attempting a setup is to get ferrothorn down to at least 50%, with its comparatively high speed tier against steel it can get sleep powder off without breaking sash, though often would be able to quiver dance on a double. In many bug v steels this has lead to 1 pokemon asleep and another knocked out, and even forced either skarmory to lose half health or tran to lose its balloon in other cases. With a moveset of hurricane/hp ground/sleep powder/quiver dance, Vivillon can actually prove quite threatening vs steel as a way to help setup sweepers later in the match. Paving the way for the likes of Volcarona or Heracross. This ability to guaranteed sleep and immediately threaten with 91% acc hurricane and quiver dance means it can bring immediate pressure to an opponents team, and can draw out revenge killers such as band azumarill or crawdaunt that they might otherwise want to save for heracross or volcarona.

Either acting as a fail safe to answer pokemon such as Mega Gallade or Keldeo without endangering a wincondition, or as a way to help cripple opponents checks and counters in the early-mid game to make your other setup and lategame sweepers have an easier time, Vivillon is a solid middle game sweeper for bug that can work as an anti lead and safety net. Support in the form of rapid spin or defog is necessary, but so long as this is held up it will feel like a useful pokemon to have in almost every matchup. In comparison to C tier pokemon, the main reason why I would run Forretress would be to allow Armaldo to run an assault vest set - meaning it can better answer lando-i, flying special attackers like tornadus-t and Mega Pidgeot, electric special attackers, volcarona, and check mega zard y. Forretress itself, is so passive that just having it guarantees free switchins for opponent wallbreakers such as Keldeo, ZardY, and Mega Garchomp which bug has an extremely difficult time answering, it's essentially useless as a spinner in the bug v fire, and is a gigantic momentum drain particularly in matches such as bug v electric. Scolipede is a solid late game sweeper for it's ability to absolutely smurf the psychic matchup, and can be devastating against fire. It's lategame potential also serves as a threat in the bug v dragon and bug v electric, as well as being able to outspeed pokemon such as latios and mega gallade. However, any matchup where bug struggles with a defensive core almost always means that scolipede will be unable to do anything threatening. This is particularly apparent in the bug v steel and bug v flying. For a type dependent on sweeping potential, scolipede brings very little when outside of its comfort zone. Vivillon as a comparison is alot more adaptable, and while it's sweeps are often cut short, they usually lead to a better situation for the rest of your team.

Vivillon D----->C

Notably Different Mechanics:
  • Mega Evolutions' type availability is based on their regular form, not on their Mega Form. For example, Mega Gyarados is usable on Flying teams because regular Gyarados is a Flying type
Not sure if I should say this but in Gen 6 - Revisiting ORAS Monotype | Smogon Forums (Post #12), this is no longer the case.

Gonna take the opportunity and post my suggested changes (agreeing w/ almost every change Cell posted so im gonna focus on other stuff):
Normal:

:lopunny-mega: S --> A (struggles against most defensive cores and it's not really mandatory, overall better than m-pidgeot but the latter still has uses such as beating m-venu and other physical walls normal can struggle with)

:pidgeot-mega: C --> B (does a lot more than the other C ranks in the list, can beat certain cores that m-lop struggles w/, m-lop still preferred)

Grass:

:Serperior: A --> B (doesnt offer much in comparison to the other A ranks, most matchups it helps vs can be won without serperior but its still very reliable against certain ground and water builds.

Flying:

:tornadus: UR --> D: prankster + tailwind enables certain HO / hard hitting flying playstyles w/ salamence and zardY so I thought it would be cool to have it listed. It can also prevent hazards w/ prankster taunt no matter how fast your opp is

Dark:

:tyranitar-mega: A --> S (I don't see any oras dark w/o this mon and its straight one of the most underrated megas this gen, beats tons of stuff (dragon, flying, electric, dark, poison).

Bug:

:Galvantula: A --> S (bug always runs webs and its on this mon bc its just really that reliable. Compundeyes + Thunder is no joke and can punch holes on water, hp ice variants are problematic for flying to some extent, no longer has to worry about speed ties with keldeo since that mon is gone. Had 100% appearance in mpl and oras cup bug teams as far as i recall and its kinda handicapping not using this mon so def deserves a rise)

Grass: F ---> C ( grass kinda feels like Poison but trading some bad matchups for some other good ones, it loses to flying and bug but beats dragon and ground which poison really hates)
Bug: C ---> B (solid anti meta type, better than many people realize)
Dark: B ---> A (keldeo banned makes this type's life a little easier, mega-ttar is a beast)

Meowdy, dropping a few teams / thoughts on ORAS mono. I had fun this MFPL building...stuff, and while not everything was successful, at least I had fun?
:cloyster::tentacruel::volcanion::rotom-wash::swampert::sharpedo-mega:
Water lost Keldeo due to a ban a few years ago in ORAS, making the type both a bit vulnerable to Bisharp, be more vulnerable to succumb to Normal's defensive core, and have a not so great matchup into Steel. For the latter two, Suicune manages to be a good replacement, as its sub doesn't really break against Chansey's Seismic toss and Ferrothorn gets cooked if it gets burned by Scald eventually. However, I chose Volcanion because its able to outspeed and OHKO Bisharp, do major damage to Celebi (while Suicune turns into mostly setup food) and Slowbro at the same time, bully Steel much harder due to it just making Steel-types like Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor explode without much thought, and its immediate firepower makes it a better team mate of Shell Smash Cloyster. Mega Sharpedo has Destiny Bond to catch Scrafty and possible threats like Colbur Berry Celebi which can spiral out of control. Choice Scarf Rotom-W is preferred due to its immunity to Spikes and not being weak to Stealth Rock (which is a main point why Volcanion or Cloy feel like poor Scarf users for me)

on :manaphy: on water though, I feel that the guy is underexplored due to it being an odd midground between Suicune and Mega Gyarados in a sense that its a special wallbreaker with a not-too great Speed tier without the ability to boost speed, have meaningful recovery, or break Ferrothorn eventually. Perhaps it could see more use if Rain (Politoed sucks, though) or Screens Water (Rotom-W?) is ever explored. Alternatively, it could choose Tail Glow + Three Attacks (Scald, HP Fire, Energy Ball or Ice Beam?), but even then it fails to grab the OHKO on Celebi or AV Tornadus-T, gets outsped by Latios or Thundurus-T and gets blasted (assuming no sub), and would just take too much damage / status to setup.

:manectric-mega::rotom-wash::magnezone::zapdos::raikou::thundurus:
Electric is such a weird type without strong Physical breakers to break Chansey, which makes this type not as great as it should be otherwise.

Choice Scarf Magnezone is quite cool, notably being able to control fast threats like Mega Diancie and Calm Mind Mega Latias, trap and remove Ferrothorn, and outspeed and finish off Bisharp. Also, without Body Press, I feel like Air Balloon Magnezone/Bulky Magnezone sets feel off. One can opt for HP Ice for Landorus if you want though, but I feel that without Heat Wave Zapdos and only Wisp-Painsplit Rotom-W to keep Scizor and Bisharp at bay, HP Fire is defs better.

Specially Defensive Zapdos along with Phys Def Rotom creates a decent core to wear down opposing defensive cores. CB Thundurus is mandatory to avoid losing to Scrafty and have a slim chance in the normal matchup, though you're still probably losing that matchup anyway unless they let Porygon-2 get Toxic'ed. HP Grass Raikou commits atrocities in the Water matchup and nabs a good amount of chip on Gastrodon and Swampert, though HP Ice is better if you want to beat Gliscor more reliably (Zapdos + Rotom-W does well enough on Flying's defensive core except for that thing). Signal Beam is a meme option but ensures that Celebi is thorougly traumatized and you will have a 70% chance that the Psychic player clicks x and cries afterward.

:gardevoir-mega::victini::jirachi::meloetta::slowbro::latios:
:gardevoir-mega: Gardevoir-Mega looks absolutely pretty so I had to try and make a good team out of it. So, that particular spread lets Gard outspeed up til Kyurem-B (a difficult Pokemon to handle when I tested) and survive a Crunch from Mega Sharpedo to OHKO it back. Will-o-Wisp (or Burns, in general) is an amazing tool in ORAS, and keeps Bisharp in check. Pixelate Hyper Voice also goes behind substitutes, quite useful against Zygarde-50% which can be annoying for the team. However, using Gardevoir-M means that there's no Gallade-M, so...

:meloetta: Sub CM Meloetta acts somewhat like Suicune due to its ability to create 101 HP Substitutes, allowing it to heavily pressure normal teams as long as you dont run into Encore Mega Lopunny (and even then, its in your favor since you can choose to just click Psyshock on the switch). However, its main weakness is its not good physical bulk. This is remediated in the team with W-o-W Gardevoir, giving Melo some more space to setup. Melo's advantage over Reuniclus aside from its speed (which lets you have a chance of winning a CM war vs Suicune, though its still very iffy) and Ghost immunity (which doesn't really matter, since there is a clear lack of Ghost moves in ORAS) is that Substitute blocks Trick...which I feel is great anyway. Focus Blast is used over Thunderbolt specifically due to Latios being Ebelt, otherwise Thunderbolt can be more desireable.

Colbur Slowbro makes an appearance over Celebi to shore up the team's weakness to Mega Gyarados and Mega Scizor, and I feel that Regenerator is much better on dealing with opposing Scarf Excadrill / Landorus-T's long term. Non-Choice Latios is utilized to get surprise KO'es (like Ice Beam->lures Kyu-B in->Draco Meteor). Since Latios being the fastest mon in the team feels not ideal, Victini carries a Choice Scarf.

Some other stuffs
:gardevoir-mega::victini::latias::slowbro::reuniclus::jirachi:
A more Normal-looking team around Thunder Reuniclus, punishing types who would prefer to wear down opposing teams using passive sources of damage.

:excadrill::zygarde::nidoking::gastrodon::mamoswine::landorus-therian:
This team is something I always wanted to bring at some point, but its really just too slow for me to use. But, perhaps the sets can be of use to future team builders who can make these work maybe? Toxic Spikes + Dragon Tail Zygarde is just so evil on paper, but apparently struggles in practice, perhaps due to its team mates being too passive.
Apep (Zygarde) @ Leftovers
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 192 HP / 64 Atk / 196 SpD / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- Substitute
- Coil
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail

-64 Atk ensures you OHKO Nidoking after SR Damage
-192 HP + Impish nature ensures Mandibuzz never breaks Substitute with Foul Play and Sub never gets broken by Seismic Toss
-56 Speed for outspeeding Bisharp
-rest in SpD, allowing its Substitute to not be broken by Slowbro's Scald
Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 104 HP / 172 SpD / 232 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake

-232 Speed outspeeds Nidoking
-104 HP / 172 SpD prevents Life Orb Kyu-B 2HKO'ing it with Ice Beam

:aerodactyl-mega::tornadus-therian::landorus-therian::skarmory::dragonite::thundurus:
A flying team I left unused because people loved to use Dark against me, and this Flying team is weak to Bisharp + Weavile. Flying teams are usually weak to Bisharp anyway, but I think thats probably why Gliscor should see a bit more usage soon, as Skarm not having Body Press makes it setup food for Taunt SD Bisharp. Thundurus is also pretty nice as it acts as an emergency speed control that outspeeds 350's, but it fails to secure important OHKOs (i.e. Gliscor after SR) that the cat form would.

Some VR noms:
Bug
:pinsir-mega: B->A
Due to the HO nature of Bug and Aerilate being 1.3x, this guy is really the mega for Bug teams. Being above the bad 328 speedtier and having quick attack/feint to compensate for the speed on Mega is also big.

Dark
:scrafty: UR->A/B
Underprepared for, extremely lethal for types not having a Hurricane or a Fairy move to kill it with. Would not forget to think about it when building an ORAS team ever again (worst feeling ever for me).

Flying
:gyarados-mega:
Should be removed due to the new mega rules, making it impossible to use on Flying.
:aerodactyl-mega: B->A
Provides the type with adequate Speed control, good coverage, Stealth Rock, and Pursuit. Its also not as allergic to Stealth Rocks, unlike Mega Charizard.

Ground
:zygarde: C->B
Less niche than its brethren in C rank.

Psychic
:deoxys-speed: Is banned
:celebi: B->A
Colbur Celebi is great glue that Psychic teams like, also setup sets make for scary cleaning potential against Steel, Ground, or Water teams.
:meloetta: C->B
See explanation on the Garde + Melo team above.

Steel
:bisharp: B->A
Synergizes super well with Steel's entry hazard core, most common 6th on Steel by far and is really a great game-ender most of the time

Water
:tentacruel: B->A
Most Water teams rely on a Tentacruel for a special wall due to its ability to also spin away hazards and set Toxic Spikes which is powerful in this gen.
:swampert: B->A
With the rise of Mega Sharpedo or Mega Gyarados as the mega of choice, base Swampert becomes the usual Electric immunity for the type
:cloyster: C->B
Not so niche anymore due to it being the only consistent source of Priority + Ice STAB.
:volcanion: C->B
Keldeo dead, this is your next best Steel breaker.
:suicune: UR->B
Catto used Calm Mind and burned everyone, including their PP. Has seen some success through the years too.
He's already B rank oops. Keeping this here to keep my praise on the cat tho >:3
:seismitoad: A->B (C?)
Swampert took its job, making it the most used Ground/Water by far in the past 2 years.
:gyarados-mega: C->B
Second most used mega, certainly has a niche as a temporary Ground immunity and its decent special bulk lets it do Sub + DD sets to annoy Psychic even further than Shark can sometimes do. Shark is easier to use as it provides a good speedtier without the need to do anything though.

Thankie for reading, I'll add more if I think of something meow missed :blobnom:
