LC Onix

[OVERVIEW]

Onix is arguably the best Stealth Rock user in Little Cup, and for very good reason. Its ability Sturdy essentially guarantees that it sets up Stealth Rock and helps give it multiple chances to do so. It also has the highest Defense stat in the tier by far, although it struggles to utilize it due to its abysmal defensive typing that gives it many weaknesses and a vulnerability to entry hazards, which can cripple it extremely.

[SET]
name: Stealth Rock
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Rock Blast
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Taunt / Roar / Dragon Tail
item: Berry Juice
ability: Sturdy
nature: Jolly
evs: 76 HP / 236 Atk / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Stealth Rock can help break opposing Sturdy Pokemon and pave the way for a sweep from a powerful Pokemon such as Omanyte or Scraggy. Rock Blast is a good general Rock-type STAB move and is useful for defeating opposing Berry Juice users, Archen and Dwebble in particular, as well as Weak Armor Vullaby. Earthquake is Onix's Ground-type STAB move, is very powerful, and is just generally good with its 100% accuracy. Taunt is a good option to prevent opposing entry hazard setters from doing their job. It is also useful for keeping opposing Pokemon from setting up on it Onix and potentially sweeping your team. Dragon Tail and Roar are similar in the sense that they phaze out problematic Pokemon. However, Dragon Tail can't force out Calm Mind Spritzee, while Roar is blocked by Taunt and deals no damage.

Set Details
========

Onix has a Jolly nature and maximum Speed investment so it can get 17 Speed, letting it Speed tie with many common threats in LC such as Mienfoo and Snivy as well as Taunt Dwebble. The rest of its EVs are put into Attack and HP; the former gives Onix extra attacking power, and the latter gives it maximum recovery from Berry Juice. Sturdy helps Onix take any one attack when at full HP and, can be very annoying to deal with in conjunction with Berry Juice.

Usage Tips
========

Onix works as an amazing lead due to its ability Sturdy against other leads such as Dwebble. With a drop in Mienfoo leads, it has become even better. Treating Onix as just a suicide lead is never a good idea, however, as it can be useful in all stages of the game. Onix can also be conserved for stopping common sweepers such as Omanyte and Zigzagoon late-game, but your team should usually already have a check for these, and Onix should only be used if all other checks are gone. Keeping Sturdy intact is usually useful, but Onix can be a good switch-in to many Flying- and Electric-types.

Team Options
========

Onix is perfect for teams that can't fit an entry hazard setter normally due to its Sturdy and Speed stat. Onix can help check Flying- and Electric-types for Pokemon such as Carvanha and Snivy. Pumpkaboo makes for a great partner for Onix, as it blocks Rapid Spin and checks the Water- and Grass-types that Onix struggles with. Any Pokemon that checks Water- and Grass-types, specifically Staryu and Ferroseed, makes for a good teammate for Onix. Staryu itself can also make a great partner, as it can clear away entry hazards and check Water-, and to some extent, Fighting-types.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Curse set can take advantage of Onix's sky-high Defense, but its abysmal Special Defense makes this essentially pointless. Heavy Slam can be used to hit Fairy-types, but it usually just takes away an important moveslot, and the coverage isn't really necessary. Stone Edge can be used over Rock Blast, but this detracts from Onix's ability to beat Surskit and Dwebble. Explosion can turn Onix into a suicide lead and hit incoming entry hazard removers, but common Rapid Spin and Defog users can completely shut it down by switching in afterwards. The set is quite bad, and is somewhat inferior to Geodude. A set using Eviolite and Weak Armor to boost Onix's Speed sounds good on paper, but Onix's low Attack makes this a bad option.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Most Ground-types can beat Onix, but Drilbur and Mudbray stand out in particular. Drilbur can Rapid Spin away Onix's entry hazards and, thanks to Mold Breaker, OHKO Onix through Sturdy, completely shutting it down. Mudbray can switch into Rock Blast to quickly rack up Defense boosts; from there, Onix can do essentially nothing. Mudbray can also cause Onix to flinch with Rock Slide, nullifying both its Sturdy and its next move. Sandshrew, although not as much of an issue, can be annoying with Knock Off, Rapid Spin, and its own Stealth Rock.

**Multi-hit Moves**: Multi-hit moves from Ferroseed and Shellder can be devastating and completely shut down Onix's strategy. There isn't really a way it can work around them, either.

**Fighting-types**: Most Fighting-types utilize Drain Punch, which can usually out-heal Onix's damage and will make quick work of its Sturdy. Mienfoo in particular commonly uses U-turn, which can break Onix's Sturdy and, therefore, make it completely useless.

**Staryu**: Staryu is Onix's best counter, as it can clear away its entry hazards and use Scald to waste its Sturdy and Berry Juice. Onix can also deal very little damage to Staryu, as Staryu is quite bulky.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Foongus and Pumpkaboo can switch into any of Onix's moves without fear. Pumpkaboo can also use Bullet Seed to have a good chance to defeat Onix in one move. Cottonee and Snivy can also switch in but are slightly worse checks.

1)
Onix can also be conserved for stopping common sweepers such as Omanyte and Carvanha late-game, but usually your team should already have a check for these and Onix should only be used if all other checks are gone
196+ Atk Life Orb Carvanha Aqua Jet vs. 76 HP / 0 Def Onix: 21-31 (100-141%) -- guaranteed OHKO

196+ SpA Omanyte Surf vs. 76 HP / 0 SpD Onix: 64-84 (305-400%) -- guaranteed OHKO

196 Atk Onix Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Carvanha: 12-15 (63-79%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

196 Atk Onix Earthquake vs. 76 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Omanyte: 14-16 (67-86%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Although Onix has good chances of living it thanks to Sturdy, I think it shouldn't be considered as a last-ditch stop to them, as they can easily exploit a Berry Juice-less Onix and proceed to 2HKO it (not even considering if Sturdy is broken, or if there are hazards on field).
The most problematic one can be Scald Omanyte, as 30% of times Onix will go down because of burn breaking an eventual Sturdy reactivation thanks to Berry Juice; I don't consider Waterfall Carvanha, as 20% chance of flinch is not that incredible thing.

2)
Heavy Slam can be used to hit Fairy-types, but it usually just takes away an important moveslot and the coverage isn't really necessary.
236 Atk Onix Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 212 HP / 196+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 10-14 (37 - 51.8%) -- 88.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

A ~90% chance of 2HKO on standard Spritzee (probably one of the sturdiest Fairy-types around) after Rocks is a notable thing, and I think you should mention it: however, you're right about the difficulty of fitting it into its moveset, because it has to give up either a STAB, Taunt (one of its main niches), or the Rocks.

3) nice work overall, I use your analyses as example when building the basis of mines :)

Overview:
- The second point isn't very strong as it can technically apply to literally any pokemon, the part about guarenteed rocks is the essential part and probably all that needs to be said there.

Set:
- I think Roar should be slashed first. They're really similar but never missing and being able to use it against Spritzee seems to come into play more often than the small amount of damage Dragon Tail provides. Roar also beats helps against Substitute users like full BP teams that don't have the Soundproof Mr. Mime. I've even used it to stop a Snivy w/ boosts and sub up from sweeping me.

Moves:
- I think Dwebbles more important to note under Rock Blast, but you can also list both

Set Details:
- The second point's wording feels a little weird; it makes me think that more EVs are placed into HP than there are. I think talking about the Atk EVs first would better reflect the set.

Usage Tips:
- I don't like mentioning it beats Surskit because it's a speed tie and if Surskit gets up webs then its job is done.
- I feel those aren't the best two examples of sweepers to beat because they're so similar and demonstrate the same point of preserving Sturdy to beat a threat, I'd replace one with Zigzagoon for more variety.
- The third point just isn't a very good usage tip because it is often the correct play the switch Onix into hazards to check things like Flying- or Fire-types. Just talk about trying to keep Sturdy intact if possible.

Team Options:
- I think Onix works best on teams that can't fit a hazard remover because it's great at stopping them from being placed
- I don't think the other two points are very strong, the U-turn thing is mostly exclusive to Mienfoo and the Spritzee part is rather niche. I'd rather see you mention Pokemon that appreciate a Flying-type check, Pokemon that check Water- and Grass-types, particularly Staryu, and Pokemon that appreciate the hazard advantage more than most such as Sweepers
- Pumpkaboo in particular is a good partner to stop Drilbur/Staryu and appreciates the Flying/Fire check.

Other Options:
- Eviolite Weak Armor set
- Somehow incorporate into the Explosion point that it stops them from using Defog on that turn
- Toxic is ok on Onix

Checks and Counters:
- Combine Drilbur and Mudbray into Ground-types, briefly include Sandshrew as well
- Give Staryu it's own section, it's probably Onix's #1 counter

Good work, QC 1/3!

mention rock blast hitts weak armour vullaby in moves

A set using Eviolite and Weak Armor and Eviolite to boost Onix's speed sounds good on paper, but Onix's low Attack. <- doesn't make sense

add grass types to counters. foongus can switch in easily, pumpkaboo can switch in easily and sometimes has bullet seed, cottonee can switch in easily, snivy can switch in and threaten with leaf storm.

why are you mentioning snivy when saying epxlosion?

other than that this is fine 3/3

Mudbray can switch into (one word) Rock Blast to quickly get a very high Defense boost, and from there, Onix can do essentially nothing. Mudbray can also cause Onix to get a flinch Onix (you cause something to sneeze, you don't sneeze something) with Rock Slide, nullifying both its Sturdy and its next move. Sandshrew, although not being as much as an issue, can be annoying with Knock Off, with Rapid Spin, and by setting up its own Stealth Rock Rocks (parallelism D:).

**Multi-hit Moves**: Multi-hit moves from Ferroseed or and Shellder can be devastating and completely shut down Onix's strategy. There in't isn't really a way it can work around them either.

**Fighting-types**: Most Fighting-types utilize Drain Punch, which can usually out-heal Onix's damage and will make quick work of its Sturdy. Mienfoo in particular commonly uses U-turn, (AC) which can break Onix's Sturdy and, therefore, (up to you, but I prefer no commas because the pause is weird here) make it completely useless.

**Staryu**: (colon) Staryu is Onix's biggest counter, as it can clear away its entry hazards and can use Scald to waste its Sturdy and Berry Juice. Onix can also do deal very little damage to Staryu, (AC) as Staryu is quite bulky.

**Grass-types**: (colon) Grass-types such as Foongus and Pumpkaboo can switch into any of Onix's moves without fear, (RC) . (AP) Pumpkaboo also using can also use Bullet Seed to have a good chance to defeat Onix in one go. Cottonee and Snivy can also switch in, (RC) but are slightly worse checks.
GP 1/2

Implemented, ready for number 2

Also Sobi don't be so condescending. I do read my analyses I just miss my own mistakes a lot.

[OVERVIEW]

Onix is arguably the best Stealth Rock user in Little Cup, (comma) and for very good reason.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

(period) and is a good Rock-type STAB move in general. Earthquake is Onix's Ground-type STAB move, is very powerful, and is just generally good with its 100% accuracy. Taunt is a good option to block prevent opposing entry hazard setters from doing their job. It is also useful for keeping opposing Pokemon from setting up on it Onix and potentially sweeping your team. Dragon Tail and Roar are similar in the sense that they phaze out problematic Pokemon. However, Dragon Tail can't drag force out Calm Mind Spritzee, while Roar is blocked by Taunt and deals no damage.

Set Details
========

Onix has a Jolly nature and maximum Speed investment so it can get 17 Speed, letting it Speed tie with many common threats in LC such as Mienfoo and Snivy, (comma) as well as letting Onix Taunt Dwebble. The rest of its EVs are put into Attack and HP; the former to gives Onix extra attacking power, and the latter gives it maximum recovery from Berry Juice. Sturdy helps Onix live take any one attack when at full HP and in conjunction with Berry Juice, can be very annoying to deal with in conjunction with Berry Juice.

Usage Tips
========

Onix works as an amazing lead with due to its ability Sturdy against other leads such as Dwebble. Also, with With a drop in Mienfoo leads, it has become even better. Treating Onix as just a suicide lead is never a good idea, however, as it can be useful in all stages of the game. Onix can also be conserved for stopping common sweepers such as Omanyte and Zigzagoon late-game, but usually your team should usually already have a check for these, and Onix should only be used if all other checks are gone. Keeping Sturdy intact is usually useful, but Onix can be a good switch-in to many Flying- and Electric-types.

Team Options
========

=============

A Curse set can take advantage of Onix's sky-high Defense, but its abysmal Special Defense makes this essentially pointless. Heavy Slam can be used to hit Fairy-types, but it usually just takes away an important moveslot, and the coverage isn't really necessary. Stone Edge can be used over Rock Blast, but this takes away detracts from Onix's ability to beat Surskit and Dwebble. Explosion can turn Onix into a suicide lead and hit incoming entry hazard removers, but common Rapid Spin and Defog users can completely shut it down by switching in afterwards. This The set is quite bad, however, and is somewhat inferior to Geodude. A set using Eviolite and Weak Armor to boost Onix's Speed sounds good on paper, but Onix's low Attack makes this a bad option.

Thank you and implemented :)

Thanks for GPing me even after I was kind of a jerk to Sobi :/
