This is part of a project to get rid of the poor quality, misinformation-ridden RBY analyses from over a decade ago. These works are low-priority and should be treated as such.
[OVERVIEW]
Despite its imposing appearance, Onix has the second-lowest Attack stat of all fully evolved Pokemon, only beating Chansey. This causes even the mighty STAB Earthquake to deal middling damage to even Ground-weak threats, only dealing up to 40.8% to Omastar. However, Onix finds a niche as the only user of a partial trapping move that has an immunity to Thunder Wave. On top of this, it's also the fastest Rock / Ground type Pokemon, notably outspeeding Hypno. While this is excellent on paper, Onix only has the woefully inconsistent Bind to make use of this niche and lacks the stats to do anything else. Outside of said niche, it's strictly outclassed by Golem, which has much higher stats overall. As if this wasn't enough, as a partial trapper, Onix competes with more viable Pokemon like Tangela, Dragonite, and tier-king Tentacruel. Ergo, Onix should not be used on a competitive RBY UU team.
[SET]
name: Bind Pivot
move 1: Bind
move 2: Rock Slide / Toxic
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Explosion
[SET COMMENTS]
Rock Slide and Earthquake give Onix the necessary coverage to hit every Pokemon in the tier, and the latter 2HKOes Raichu and Electabuzz. However, Toxic is usable over Rock Slide to boost net damage output with Bind. Explosion OHKOes Kadabra and gives the opportunity for a teammate to switch in for free; this also ensures Onix can maintain value if paralyzed, which otherwise incapacitates it. If paired with Toxic users like Persian, then Onix can quickly pile on damage with Bind, which can work especially well in tandem with other partial trappers like Tentacruel. However, the presence of opposing Tentacruel in the tier prevents that from being an effective strategy, as its Poison typing leaves it immune to Toxic.
