Set Description
=========
Volcarona is a dangerous sweeper in OU, using the excellent Quiver Dance to boost and sweep through teams. Flamethrower is generally the preferred Fire-type STAB move for its accuracy, but Fire Blast is a viable option, as its higher power allows Volcarona to OHKO Pokemon like Nasty Plot Tornadus-T, offensive Landorus-T, and, with Stealth Rock chip damage, Tapu Lele after a Quiver Dance boost. Bug Buzz provides a secondary STAB move that hits Tyranitar, Slowbro, and Slowking hard while being its best move against Garchomp, one of Volcarona's best counters. Psychic allows Volcarona to not be completely walled by Toxapex and hits Dragapult harder than any other common move, with +1 Psychic under Psychic Terrain having a chance to outright OHKO physically defensive Toxapex. Giga Drain allows Volcarona to threaten other walls like Gastrodon, Hippowdon, and Tapu Fini while allowing Volcarona to gain back crucial HP at the cost of letting Toxapex get free turns against it. Volcarona's main issue is that its easily shut down by many staples like specially defensive Garchomp, Blissey, and most notably Flash Fire Heatran, which completely shuts down Volcarona, making it an inconsistent sweeper.
Team Options
========
Offensive Quiver Dance Volcarona fits on offense teams that can overwhelm Volcarona's counters or use the threat of its sweep to make threats like Heatran, Dragonite, and Toxapex think twice before being used to answer its teammates. Tapu Lele appreciates Volcarona forcing Heatran to be conservative with answering it and being a great Melmetal and emergency Kartana answer, while Psychic Terrain boosts Volcarona's Psychic to hit Toxapex harder and allows Volcarona to avoid Urshifu-R's Aqua Jet. Choice Specs Tapu Lele is especially good for its extra breaking power against the slow teams that are more capable of packing Volcarona's counters such as Toxapex, Blissey, and specially defensive Garchomp. Swords Dance Garchomp acts as a more reliable sweeper and is one of the best answers to Heatran in OU while having a STAB Earthquake to break through Toxapex, Gastrodon, and Galarian Slowking and also potentially serving as a Stealth Rock setter. In return, Garchomp appreciates Volcarona's ability to threaten its checks like Rillaboom, Weavile, and Buzzwole, while Flame Body can potentially cripple the aforementioned Pokemon in a pinch. Dragapult can be a solid partner, serving as a check to Urshifu-R and putting pressure on Volcarona's defensive answers like Toxapex, Heatran, and Tyranitar, which are often tasked with being a team's Shadow Ball sponge, so that Volcarona can threaten to sweep if its shared checks with Dragapult get too low on HP. Spikes and Stealth Rock from lead Mew give Volcarona a path to break through even Heatran, with the entry hazard chip damage outpacing Leftovers recovery. Dragonite is yet another Dragon-type that pairs well with Volcarona, being a sweeper that fits excellently on the same offense and hyper offense teams that Volcarona does; Dragonite takes advantage of the special walls, most notably Heatran, that wall Volcarona, while Volcarona can take advantage of Dragonite's checks like Corviknight, Ferrothorn, and Clefable.
