With its powerful STAB moves, high Special Attack and Speed stats, and a wide movepool, Iron Moth can serve as an early-game wallbreaker that provides further utility. Its typing and bulk allows it to threaten offensive Pokemon such as Gholdengo, Breloom, and Meowscarada while being able to switch in on Gholdengo and some Iron Valiant sets not running a super effective move, and with its Poison typing, it can absorb Toxic Spikes placed by opposing Iron Moth and Toxapex. With Toxic Spikes, it provides a form of offensive utility in order to wear down defensive Pokemon such as Ting-Lu and Dondozo, as well as offensive Pokemon such as Dragapult, Roaring Moon, and Iron Valiant. Flamethrower is Iron Moth's preferred Fire-type STAB move due to its consistency, although Overheat can be run if power is preferred. Overheat is the better option on sun teams or Tera Fire variants, as Iron Moth can OHKO Baxcalibur and 2HKO Unaware Clodsire. Morning Sun grants Iron Moth valuable longevity, allowing it to find more opportunities to break walls as the game progresses. Tera Fairy removes Iron Moth's various weaknesses, including to Stealth Rock, and improves its matchups against Pokemon like Dragapult, Walking Wake, and Greninja in a pinch. Tera Fire can be a great option as well especially on sun teams, since it grants Iron Moth boost on either Flamethrower or Overheat, increasing its wallbreaking potential. Tera Flying completely negates its weakness to Ground-types by granting it an immunity, allowing it to check Great Tusk and Iron Treads.
Iron Moth is best used on offensive teams that appreciate its role compression of it being a wallbreaker and offensive utility. Rotom-W, Great Tusk, and Meowscarada make for good teammates due to their ability to weaken walls and offensive Pokemon through Trick from the former and Knock Off from the latter two. Knock Off support in particular is beneficial for Iron Moth, since Heavy-Duty Boots can be removed from Pokemon like Baxcalibur, Tera Water Skeledirge, and Dragonite to wear them down from entry hazards into Iron Moth's KO range. Rotom-W and Meowscarada are also great pivots that can bring Iron Moth in against Amoonguss and Corviknight. Great Tusk and Garchomp can stack entry hazards with Iron Moth, allowing them to wear down offensive Pokemon such as Dragapult and Iron Valiant, as well as defensive Pokemon like Toxapex and Amoonguss for other offensive teammates to take advantage of. They can also check Pokemon that Iron Moth struggles with such as opposing Iron Moth, Volcarona, and Ceruledge. Iron Moth can struggle against walls such as Toxapex, Clodsire, Garganacl, and Skeledirge, so it appreciates other offensive Pokemon that can pressure them. Hence, Choice Specs Dragapult, Covert Cloak Gholdengo, and Choice Band Great Tusk make for good teammates. Iron Moth also finds a good place on sun teams, so offensive staples such as Walking Wake and Roaring Moon appreciate Iron Moth spreading poison through Toxic Spikes and removing revenge killers like Kingambit and Breloom so that they can wallbreak more easily. Lastly, sweepers such as Dragon Dance Dragapult and Iron Valiant benefit from Iron Moth removing and setting Toxic Spikes, as well as threatening Amoonguss and Tera Fairy Garganacl and Skeledirge.
