Draft Ninetales

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 5 onwards

**Price Range**: 7-8 points

**Overview**: Ninetales is one of a mere two Pokemon available in the format with access to Drought. Unlike Torkoal, it has a good Speed stat as well as numerous support options for supporting its team such as the reliable Encore, the high-risk but high-reward Hypnosis, and the incredible Healing Wish. It can even go offensive with access to Nasty Plot and solid coverage options. However, Ninetales has a rather low Special Attack stat, meaning any moves outside of sun-boosted STAB moves don't deal much damage without a boost. Additionally, it tends to not last very long due to its weakness to entry hazards, since it wants to set up sun multiple times during a game while holding a Heat Rock, as well as its low overall bulk despite having a decent Special Defense stat. Major competition from Torkoal, which generally has better overall traits, does not help either.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Sun Setter**: Ninetales's main role on a team is to provide automatic sun for its more dangerous teammates to utilize. It can opt to either go bulky in an attempt to survive incoming attacks as it switches in or offensive so that it can actually do damage and not be a passive blob. Ninetales has a deep support movepool that can enable free turns for its teammates and cripple the opposition. No matter which route it chooses to take, it always wants to hold a Heat Rock to create as many sun turns as possible.

**Offensive**: Offensive sets focus on Ninetales utilizing the sun for its own purposes, in which it has multiple options for boosting its offensive potential. Calm Mind and Nasty Plot give it the ability to set up, while Choice items can bypass the need to set up and provide immediate offensive potential to make up for the reduction of sun turns. Although the sun boosts its Fire-type moves, its coverage moves want a boost in order to do meaningful damage. In addition, sacrificing a Heat Rock for items that benefit Ninetales directly means its teammates have less turns to utilize the sun themselves.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Overheat, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Weather Ball

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot, Calm Mind, Agility, Flame Charge

**Utility Moves**: Encore, Healing Wish, Hypnosis, Memento, Roar, Will-O-Wisp

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse, Energy Ball, Extrasensory, Psyshock, Scorching Sands, Shadow Ball, Solar Beam

Niche Moves
========
**Sunny Day**: Ninetales may find itself in weather wars against other Pokemon that can change the weather. As such, it may benefit from Sunny Day, which prevents it from needing to switch out in order to change the weather.

**Pain Split**: Ninetales typically doesn't last very long in a match thanks to unimpressive bulk and an entry hazard-weak typing. Pain Split can attempt to remedy this, especially during longer games where it has accumulated damage simply by switching into hazards.

**Disable**: Disable is an alternative to Encore that can lock foes out of using the last move they used, potentially allowing Ninetales's teammates to hit the field more safely.

Common Items
========
**Heat Rock**: The go-to item for most sets, Heat Rock gives Ninetales's teammates more turns to utilize the sun and prevents Ninetales from having to enter the field more than it needs to in order to set the sun back up.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Ninetales is very weak to entry hazards, so it does not last very long without support. Heavy-Duty Boots can provide such support by sacrificing extra sun turns in order to allow it to last longer.

Niche Items
========
**Eject Pack**: Eject Pack should be used with Overheat, allowing Ninetales to pivot out of the battle to a more threatening teammate once its stats drop as a result of using the move.

**Damage-boosting Items**: Sets utilizing Ninetales's natural power through its setup and coverage moves may appreciate the extra damage that damage-boosting items can offer. Charcoal gives a decent boost to its already powerful sun-boosted STAB Fire-type attacks, while Life Orb gives a stronger boost to all of its attacks, though the recoil makes it faint a lot faster and thus unable to support its team.

**Choice Specs / Scarf**: In order to take advantage of the fewer sun turns, Choice items can be used to boost either of Ninetales's useable offensive stats in Speed or Special Attack, preventing the need to set up and waste precious sun turns.

Tera
========
Ninetales is a poor choice for a Tera Captain, since its main strength comes in powering up its more dangerous teammates as opposed to itself. Should you wish to make it your Tera Captain anyway, Tera Fire is the go-to choice to make its already-powerful Fire-type attacks even more difficult to stomach. Other options include defensive types such as Tera Water and Fairy to change its weaknesses and make it last longer due to no longer being weak to Stealth Rock. Finally, other offensive types such as Tera Grass and Ghost synergize with Fire-type coverage very well, allowing Ninetales to fire off powerful moves in Solar Beam and Shadow Ball with an extra STAB boost.

Draft Strategy
========
While Ninetales is not drafted early as a centerpiece of a draft, it is otherwise a very crucial piece of sun teams. As such, it should be drafted onto teams that are either already packing sun-boosted Pokemon or ones intending to add such Pokemon to their team. While Ninetales offers fantastic support to these Pokemon either simply by existing or through its own support movepool, it requires ample support and viable teammates in return so that it can perform effectively.

**Entry Hazard Removal**: Due to being weak to entry hazards, Ninetales has poor longevity on fields littered with hazards due to usually foregoing holding Heavy-Duty Boots in order to hold a Heat Rock. As such, hazard-removing teammates are paramount to ensure it can continue to set the sun up over the course of the match. Great Tusk is the premier choice, being a Rapid Spin user powered up by the sun, though other options such as Terapagos and Iron Treads can also work effectively as spinners.

**Sun-boosted Teammates**: Drought enables a plethora of teammates that benefit from the sun. Protosynthesis Pokemon such as Raging Bolt and Walking Wake can combine powerful boosts with the extra benefit of a held item thanks to not requiring Booster Energy. Chlorophyll Pokemon like Venusaur and Hisuian Lilligant become dangerous cleaners that are very difficult to revenge kill, even by most Choice Scarf Pokemon, thanks to their enormous Speed stats under sun. Finally, alternate Fire-type Pokemon such as Chi-Yu and Gouging Fire have much better offensive stats than Ninetales, and their Fire-type STAB attacks become extremely oppressive when further boosted by the sun.

Checks and Counters
========
**Entry Hazards**: With entry hazards being found on most teams, Ninetales finds itself worn down through repeated switches over the course of a game, since it does not always run Heavy-Duty Boots. Pokemon that can set entry hazards—notably Stealth Rock—such as Glimmora, Uxie and Ting-Lu create a hazardous environment for it that greatly threatens its longevity.

**Bulky Fire-resistant Pokemon**: Since Ninetales does not do much damage without boosting outside of its STAB moves, Pokemon that can naturally tank Fire-type attacks such as Latios, Cinderace, and Hisuian Arcanine can switch into it and threaten it with their powerful attacks in return.

**Weather-changing Strategies**: Weather is the name of the game with Ninetales, and thus opponents may attempt to counter it using their own weather. Automatic weather setters such as Pelipper and Tyranitar not only can change the weather but have a favorable matchup against it, often forcing it out. They are also slower and thus win the weather war in a lead scenario. Manual weather setters can also prove to be irritating for Ninetales, such as both Slowking formes using Chilly Reception to change the weather while gaining momentum for their team.

Common Roles
========
**Sun Setter**: Ninetales' main role on a team is to provide automatic sun for its more dangerous teammates to utilize. It can opt to either go bulky in an attempt to survive incoming attacks as it switches in, or offensive so that it can actually do damage and not be a passive blob. Ninetales has a deep support movepool it can dip into to enable free turns for its teammates and cripple the opposition. No matter which route Ninetales chooses to take, it will always be wanting to hold a Heat Rock to create as many sun turns as possible.

**Setup**: This set focuses on Ninetales utilizing the sun for its own purposes, as well as taking advantage of its great setup moves in either Calm Mind or Nasty Plot to boost its power. Thanks to the sun, Ninetales has very strong STAB Fire-type moves that are difficult to switch into after a boost, as well as a powerful Solar Beam to compliment it. Whilst Heat Rock is still a solid option, Ninetales may opt to run damage boosting items to try and power itself up more as opposed to its teammates.

**Choiced Attacker**: Sacrificing extra sun turns for more immediate boosts to either Special Attack with Choice Specs or Speed with Choice Scarf can turn Ninetales into a formidable force. Not requiring setup means Ninetales can take advantage of the more limited sun turns as a result of lacking a Heat Rock. Ninetales can still run support moves on these sets too, such as Healing Wish or Memento, allowing it to enable a teammate once Ninetales is spent. merge these two points into one offensive role, you aren't using offensive ninetales enough to emphasize it that much over drought as support

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Overheat, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Weather Ball

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot, Calm Mind, Agility, Flame Charge

**Utility Moves**: Baton Pass, Disable, Encore, Healing Wish, Hypnosis, Memento, Roar, Will-O-Wisp

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse, Energy Ball, Extrasensory, Psyshock, Scorching Sands, Shadow Ball, Solar Beam

Niche Moves
========
**Foul Play**: Having rather low offensive stats, Ninetales can turn opposing an physical attacker's power against them with Foul Play, giving support sets an option for dealing significant damage.

**Hex**: Being able to reliably spread burns and occasionally sleep means Ninetales can opt to run Hex as a more powerful Ghost-type move over Shadow Ball, doubling in power when used against statused targets.

**Night Shade**: When running little to no offensive investment in favour of a bulky support set, Night Shade can be used as a reliable source of fixed damage.

**Pain Split**: Ninetales typically doesn't last very long in a match thanks to unimpressive bulk and a hazard weak typing. Pain Split can attempt to remedy this, especially during longer games where Ninetales has accumulated damage simply by switching into hazards, by healing itself against healthy targets whilst also damaging them.

**Safeguard**: As its primary role is to setup the sun for its teammates, Ninetales can run Safeguard to create a safer environment for its teammates to switch into the field safely, where they will have a temporary immunity to certain status inflicting moves such as Thunder Wave.

**Charm / Baby-Doll Eyes**: While Will-O-Wisp is Ninetales' primary method of lowering opposing Pokemon's Attack stats, some targets may be immune to burns, such as Fire-types. Charm achieves practically the same effect as a burn whilst Baby-Doll Eyes are a less potent drop that has priority, allowing Ninetales to weaken faster opponents.

**Snarl**: While Ninetales has several options to weaken opposing physical attacks, Snarl offers the ability to drop opposing Pokemon's Special Attack stats, creating opportunities for teammates to switch in more safely.

**Sunny Day**: Ninetales may find itself in weather wars against other Pokemon that can change the weather. As such, Ninetales may benefit from Sunny Day, which will prevent Ninetales from needing to switch out in order to change the weather. move to the top

as you said, massively cutting this down. if you really want to keep some of these can have that discussion with me and qc2, but most of these just seem pointless given ninetales's movepool and special attack stat.

Common Items
========
**Heat Rock**: The go-to item for most sets, Heat Rock extends the sun duration by a whole three turns, giving Ninetales' teammates more turns to utilize the sun and preventing it from having to enter the field more than it needs to in order to set the sun back up.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Ninetales is very weak to hazards, and as such will not last very long without support. Heavy-Duty Boots can provide such support by sacrificing extra sun turns in order to allow Ninetales to last longer. This means it will have to hit the field more often in order to keep fueling its teammates with sun.

Niche Items
========
**Eject Pack**: This item should be used with the move Overheat, allowing Ninetales to pivot out of the battle to a more threatening teammate once its stats drop as a result of using the move.

**Damage-boosting Items**: Sets utilizing Ninetales' natural power through its setup and coverage moves may appreciate the extra damage that boosting items can offer. Charcoal gives a decent boost to its already powerful sun-boosted STAB Fire-type attacks, whilst Life Orb gives a stronger boost to all of its attacks, though the recoil makes Ninetales faint a lot faster and thus unable to support its team.

**Choice Specs / Scarf**: In order to take advantage of the fewer sun turns, Choice items can be used to boost either of Ninetales' useable offensive stats in Speed or Special Attack, preventing the need to setup and waste precious sun turns.

**Air Balloon**: A vulnerability to spikes and a weakness to Groung-type attacks make Ninetales a good user of an Air Balloon, giving it a temporary immunity to both and giving it an option to hit the field safely and setup the sun.

Tera
========
Ninetales is a poor choice for a Tera Captain, since its main strength comes in powering up its more dangerous teammates as opposed to itself. Should you wish to make it your Tera Captain anyway, Tera Fire is the go to choice to make its already powerful Fire-type attacks even more difficult to stomach. Other options include defensive types such as Water- and Fairy-type to change Ninetales' weaknesses and make it last longer due to no longer being weak to Stealth Rock. Finally, types such as Grass- and Steel-types deserve a mention in the incredibly low chance that Ninetales' opts to run the often inferior Flash Fire as its ability, changing a Fire-type weakness into an immunity. can mention grass offensively and ghost defensively

Draft Strategy
========
While Ninetales is not drafted early as a centerpiece of a draft, it is otherwise a very crucial piece of sun teams, preventing them from having to set up the sun manually. As such, Ninetales should be drafted onto teams either already packing Pokemon that are powered up by the sun or teams intending to add such Pokemon to their team. While Ninetales offers fantastic support to these Pokemon either simply by existing or through its own support movepool, it requires ample support and viable teammates in return so that it can perform effectively.

**Hazard Removal**: Due to being weak to hazards, Ninetales has poor longevity on fields littered with hazards due to usually foregoing holding Heavy-Duty Boots in order to hold a Heat Rock. As such, hazard removing teammates are paramount to ensure Ninetales can continue to set the sun up over the course of the match. Great Tusk is the premier choice, being a Rapid Spin user powered up by the sun Ninetales sets, though other options such as Terapagos and Iron Treads can also work effectively as spinners.

**Protosynthesis**: Protosynthesis is an ability shared by the powerful Anicent Paradox Pokemon, who wield high stats, a colourful range of types not normally seen on sun teams and the ability to become even stronger thanks to the boost Protosynthesis provides them while the sun is active. This Drought support lessens the need to run Booster Energy on ancient Paradox Pokemon, allowing them to combine a Protosynthesis boost with the extra benefit of a held item. Pokemon with this ability such as Raging Bolt and Roaring Moon become terrifying forces under the sun, with a special mention to Walking Wake as one of the very few Water-type Pokemon that can operate on sun teams.

**Chlorophyll**: Under the sun, Chlorophyll provides a deadly double Speed increase to whoever wields it. Powerful Grass-type Pokemon have access to this ability, who offensively compliment the Fire-type very well and become excellent cleaners due to being very difficult to revenge kill. Venusaur, Hisuian Lilligant and the often underrated Shiftry become monsters when sun is active that not even most Choice Scarf Pokemon can stop.

**Fire-type Attackers**: Despite being a Fire-type itself, Ninetales has low attacking stats that leave it wanting for more power. As such, it appreciates other Fire-type teammates who can more effectively use the sun to deal enormous damage. Chi-Yu, Gouging Fire and Ogerpon-Hearthflame have far higher attacking stats that opposing teams find extremely oppressive when their STAB attacks are boosted further by Ninetales' sun.

Checks and Counters
========
**Entry Hazards**: With entry hazards being found on most teams, Ninetales finds itself worn down through repeated switches over the course of a game since it does not always run Heavy-Duty Boots. Pokemon that can set entry hazards, notably Stealth Rock, such as Glimmora, Uxie and Ting-Lu create a hazardous environment for Ninetales that greatly threatens its longevity.

**Bulky Fire-type Resists**: Since Ninetales does not do much damage without boosting outside of its STAB moves, Pokemon that can naturally tank Fire-type attacks can easily switch into Ninetales and threaten it in return. Fire resistant Pokemon such as Latios, Cinderace and Hisuian Arcanine can switch into Ninetales fairly easily and threaten it with their powerful attacks.

**Weather Changing Strategies**: Weather is the name of the game with Ninetales, and thus opponents may attempt to counter it using their own weather. Automatic setters such as Pelipper and Tyranitar not only can change the weather, but have a favourable matchup against Ninetales, often forcing it out. They are also slower and thus will win the weather war in a lead scenario. Manual setters can also prove to be irritating for Ninetales, such as both Slowking and their Chilly Reception, changing the weather whilst gaining momentum for their team.

**Faster Attackers**: Ninetales' Speed, while good, leaves it outspeed by a myriad of powerful attackers. Although some may not be able to switch into its attacks, others can and all are able to revenge kill or force it out when given an opportunity. Pokemon such as Keldeo and Darkrai pack higher Speed stats to get the jump on Ninetales and attempt to KO it, whilst other Pokemon such as Ogerpon-Wellspring can achieve the same effect, but must be wary of Will-O-Wisp when attempting to switch directly into it due to being a physical attacker.

Thank you for the feedback, implemented all the changes.

Not worried about the culling of the niche moves, but figured they were worth bringing up just in case.

**Heat Rock**: The go-to item for most sets, Heat Rock extends the sun duration by a whole three turns, giving Ninetales' gives Ninetales's teammates more turns to utilize the sun and preventing it prevents Ninetales from having to enter the field more than it needs to in order to set the sun back up.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Ninetales is very weak to entry hazards, and as such will so it does not last very long without support. Heavy-Duty Boots can provide such support by sacrificing extra sun turns in order to allow Ninetales it to last longer. This means it will have to hit the field more often in order to keep fueling its teammates with sun (RP) sacrificing extra sun turns is already mentioned in the prior sentence

Niche Items
========
**Eject Pack**: This item Eject Pack should be used with the move Overheat, allowing Ninetales to pivot out of the battle to a more threatening teammate once its stats drop as a result of using the move.

**Damage-boosting Items**: Sets utilizing Ninetales' Ninetales's natural power through its setup and coverage moves may appreciate the extra damage that boosting damage-boosting items can offer. Charcoal gives a decent boost to its already powerful sun-boosted STAB Fire-type attacks, whilst while Life Orb gives a stronger boost to all of its attacks, though the recoil makes Ninetales it faint a lot faster and thus unable to support its team.

**Choice Specs / Scarf**: In order to take advantage of the fewer sun turns, Choice items can be used to boost either of Ninetales' Ninetales's useable offensive stats in Speed or Special Attack, preventing the need to setup set up and waste precious sun turns.

Tera
========
Ninetales is a poor choice for a Tera Captain, since its main strength comes in powering up its more dangerous teammates as opposed to itself. Should you wish to make it your Tera Captain anyway, Tera Fire is the go to go-to choice to make its already powerful already-powerful Fire-type attacks even more difficult to stomach. Other options include defensive types such as Tera Water- and Fairy-type Fairy to change Ninetales' its weaknesses and make it last longer due to no longer being weak to Stealth Rock. Finally, other offensive types such as Tera Grass- and Ghost-type Ghost synergize with the Fire-type coverage very well, allowing Ninetales to fire off powerful coverage moves in Solar Beam and Shadow Ball with an extra STAB-boost STAB boost.

Draft Strategy
========
While Ninetales is not drafted early as a centerpiece of a draft, it is otherwise a very crucial piece of sun teams (RC) preventing them from having to set up the sun manually. As such, Ninetales it should be drafted onto teams either already packing Pokemon that are powered up by the sun either already packing sun-boosted Pokemon or teams ones intending to add such Pokemon to their team.

As such, hazard removing hazard-removing teammates are paramount to ensure Ninetales it can continue to set the sun up over the course of the match. Great Tusk is the premier choice, being a Rapid Spin user powered up by the sun Ninetales sets, though other options such as Terapagos and Iron Treads can also work effectively as spinners.

**Sun-boosted Teammates**: Drought enables a plethora of teammates that benefit from the sun (RC) of which there are a wide variety. Finally, alternate Fire-type Pokemon such as Chi-Yu and Gouging Fire have much better offensive stats than Ninetales, whose and their Fire-type STAB-attacks STAB attacks become extremely oppressive when further boosted by the sun.

Checks and Counters
========
**Entry Hazards**: With entry hazards being found on most teams, Ninetales finds itself worn down through repeated switches over the course of a game, (AC) since it does not always run Heavy-Duty Boots. Pokemon that can set entry hazards (RC) notably Stealth Rock (RC) such (no spaces between dashes) as Glimmora, Uxie and Ting-Lu create a hazardous environment for Ninetales it that greatly threatens its longevity.

**Bulky Fire-type Resists Fire-resistant Pokemon**: Since Ninetales does not do much damage without boosting outside of its STAB moves, Pokemon that can naturally tank Fire-type attacks can easily switch into Ninetales and threaten it in return. Fire resistant Pokemon such as Latios, Cinderace, (AC) and Hisuian Arcanine can switch into Ninetales fairly easily it and threaten it with their powerful attacks in return.

**Weather Changing Weather-changing Strategies**: Weather is the name of the game with Ninetales, and thus opponents may attempt to counter it using their own weather. Automatic weather setters such as Pelipper and Tyranitar not only can change the weather (RC) but have a favourable favorable matchup against Ninetales it, often forcing it out. They are also slower and thus will win the weather war in a lead scenario. Manual weather setters can also prove to be irritating for Ninetales, such as both Slowking and their formes using Chilly Reception (RC) changing to change the weather whilst while gaining momentum for their team.
