NijaSkills vs. Led Zeppelin. A mole, a rat, and a Bird's warstory.

I've been reading warstories for a while, and I've noticed that many of the recent ones have been very lacking in quality. Here's for hoping that I can change that. This was a battle that I had during a Standard OU tournament on Smogon's Pokemon Online Server. Enjoy!

NijaSkills sent out Mienshao!

Led Zeppelin sent out Hippowdon!

The foe's Hippowdon's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!

I started this battle off thinking, "Oh great, another sand team." My team always struggles with Sand, specifically with Gliscor and Landorus. It's kind of stupid to play with a team that is weak to sand, and I've changed it since, but I played with this team for quite a while, making small changes along the way. However, a look at my opponent's team, and I see a lack of Gliscor and Landorus. This game had potential. I start out with the conventional Sand team matchup - Mienshao vs. Hippowdon. I start with Fake Out, since free damage is always nice, and Mienshao can regenerate the Life Orb and Sand damage.

I have a pretty standard way of dealing with lead Hippos. I use Fake Out to scout the set. If it does ~18% or more, I can usually OHKO it with High Jump Kick, and that is what I do. However, I did only 9%, so this is a very physically defensive Hippo. Now, I could go for the HJK anyway, and 2HKO it if it goes for Stealth Rock. However, it can KO Mienshao with Earthquake, and I can't afford to lose it just yet. I lose nothing by using U-Turn, so that is what I do. I can go out to Skarmory and set up rocks, since Skarm completely walls Hippo.

It turns out that I was right to get Mienshao out of there, as Hippo goes for the Earthquake. You have to love the words "It had no effect." It's time for me to set up Stealth Rock. I know he will too, but I don't really mind, nothing on my team is weak to it, and I have no way to stop it.

At this point, I don't want to switch, since my opponent is just going to switch himself or try to Roar me out. That means that my only real option is Whirlwind. I do get the bonus of outspeeding Hippo and Whirlwinding it out before it Roars Skarmory though.

Ahh, Excadrill. It was so feared earlier in the generation before people figured out how to counter it. Fortunately, one of those counters is Skarmory. Now, I don't want him setting up a Swords Dance, and an unboosted Rock Slide won't do much to Skarmory, so he is likely to either go for the boost or try for the futile damage. Or he could switch. In any case, my best bet is to get rid of it, so I choose Whirlwind.

I'll be honest. I didn't expect Rapid Spin. I know that Excadrill can carry it (I actually used it the only time I used Excadrill), but it generally suffers from 4-move-slot syndrome, and prefers to use a different move. On a different note, this time Whirlwind has dragged out Whimsicott. Unless it is really unconventional, it's going to go for either Taunt or Leech Seed. My best answer to both of those is a U-Turn from Scizor, so I'll switch into Scizor, and follow promptly with U-Turn.

After throwing in a Monty Python reference in response to a spectator's comments, it's back to the battle. Zeppelin has brought out his own Skarmory, and my best (and to be honest, almost only) response to that is my Specs Latios, which can OHKO it with HP Fire. I have a suspicion that he will switch, but I can't afford to play reckless with my Latios, I need it for later. I don't want to overpredict and Draco Meteor, since I don't know what will switch in. (I didn't really study the team preview beyond his lead, so I forget the details) I go for the obvious Hidden Power.

And there's the first bit of Hax, as Slowbro is burned on entry, but I actually prefer when it is burnt, as that means it can't be Toxiced, Slept, or Paralyzed, which are all more detrimental to Slowbro than burn. And it's a 30% burn chance, it happens a lot. Now, there isn't anything that a standard Vaporeon (Wish/Protect/Boil Over/Toxic) can do to Slowbro, so I expect him to switch. What to, I don't know. My best bet is to Calm Mind up, so I can hit whatever comes in with a little power, and avoid getting destroyed by special attackers.

Trace is seriously the most useful ability that exists. The widespread use of Water/Volt Absorb, Flash Fire, Lightningrod, Herbivore, and the rest give Porygon immunities to so many powerful special attackers' STAB. Chandelure, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Heatran. They all give Porygon a vital immunity that allows it to wall them. Also, it can sometimes Trace Blissey's Natural Cure to heal itself from annoying statuses. With the Evolution Stone equipped, almost nothing can break through Porygon. Now, I want Vaporeon gone, of his two ground types, he has Excadrill, which Skarmory can handily force out if brought in, and Hippowdon, who Porygon can easily beat with Ice Beam, so T-Bolt away!

It turns out that he knows he isn't doing anything to Slowbro with Excadrill, and he brings his Whimsicott in on the resist. This would normally be a smart move, after all, the standard Calm Mind Slowbro carries Calm Mind/Slack Off/Boil Over/Psychic. However, I have an ace in the hole. A bit of hax in the crit here, but I'm not sure if it mattered. In order to KO Whimsicott after Sandstorm, I would need to do 63% damage. An unbolted Flamethower probably averages around 60% on Whimsicott. A high damage roll could have beaten it anyway. Beyond that, if it survived, all it could have done the next turn is Leech Seeded Slowbro, which wouldn't have mattered as I would have switched the next turn anyway. If he switched, it would have died to Stealth Rock on the next switch in anyway. Anyway, beyond that, he has brought in Reuniclus. Scizor is the only thing I have that can significantly damage it after a Calm Mind, and Slowbro is still Taunted, so it can't Calm Mind with it. At this point, it looks like I have the game made. I'm up 4-1, and things are looking good. Then, I look at my team and realize something, after a Swords Dance, he can outspeed and OHKO my entire team, barring Skarmory, and the only moves that can OHKO it are Latios's Surf/Hidden Power, and Scizor's Brick Break. Since I am locked into Brick Break (Scizor's only move that hits Excadrill effectively), the obvious move would be to stay in and try to hit it, to prevent it from setting up a Swords Dance. However, I've been in this situation before, with Slowbro, and I stayed in then, and he killed me. I have reason to believe he would just finish me off. I take this chance, predict the Earthquake, and switch to Latios.

My prediction pays off, and I can finish this match. Rock Slide won't OHKO at this health, and I can finish it off with Surf. I hit the button and breathe a sigh of relief, only for:

My best hope of winning this match just went down to a flinch. Latios is finished. However, I can't call that as unjustified hax. That is the only rock slide flinch that happened, and it has a 30% chance, so it was bound to happen at some point.

It looks grim for me here. He can swords dance, and push through the rest of my team. I do have one hope left though. I still have priority moves in Bullet Punch and Fake Out left. If I can bring it down low enough, I might be able to salvage this. My plan: SPAM BRAVE BIRD LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW.

Mienshao used Fake Out, Excadrill Fainted. That just tastes so sweet. That move does literally like 4% to it. I know that it isn't the closest of battles, but it was by no means one sided. I hope you enjoyed my warstory!

Props:
Almost totally Hax-free battle
My Skarmory just walling everything
Excadrill being a constant threat
Mienshao's fake out win
Letting BOTH Skarmory and Excadrill get healed on the same turn

Slops:
Switching Skarmory into a T-bolt
Letting Porygon-2 die for no reason
Hippowdon didn't really do anything
Mienshao used 3 moves the entire match. 2 of which were Fake Out.

This was a 'wholesome' battle, full of standard content. It was quite interesting, and your comments were better than many. There were a few bad moments in there, but you easily get an 8.5/10. ^_^

That was great. Although there were a couple mistakes and haxxes, decent comments, nice formattting (although the skarmory recoil incident was a turnoff), a pretty damn close ending, and there was even a Book Ends style ending (start with Fake Out, finish with Fake Out), which really helped cinch a great warstory.

9/10

this was a really good read and I liked it, however, it never truly gripped me as I always felt that you had control of the match at all times so there were not really any twists and turns that I enjoy reading. However I was a great first warstory and I look forward to more!

^Pretty much that. You had lots of pokemon in reserve that were just hanging around, like Latios and Mienshao, which made it a little less tense. Otherwise great.

Some misplays, but defnitely better than most. However, I definitely felt like you had the advantage the whole time, with him letting Vaporeon and Skarmory die so easily. But otherwise solid. Comments are simple, but they aren't lacking.

I liked this battle. A couple of misplays & minor hax did bug me a bit, but that's just me. As with ginganinja, I never really felt gripped by it, but it was still an interesting battle, good prediction on both sides, this was a decent battle. The formatting wasn't the best, but it was still okay & it was easy on the eyes, bar the props section. The commentary was above average as well, your thought process was clearly shown imo, & the fact that you expanded a bit is also good. Your promise to us was to give us a high quality warstory, & I'm proud to say you delivered on your promise. Good job. Looking forward to reading more warstories from you in the future.

7/10 for the battle, 6/10 for the formatting, 8/10 for the commentary. Overall: 7/10. This is a really good warstory. Thank you for the good read.

I liked this warstory. You seemed to have the advantage for most of the match, but your opponent almost made a comeback with Doryuuzu near the end. I would have liked to see more action from Kojondo, but I realize you didn't really get many opportunities to use it.

7.5/10

i liked it a lot...it is much better than most of the stories here in UT, sure not the best, but quite enjoyable...8/10

I thought it was great. Your comments were good, showing your thought processes throughout the match, and the formatting was excellent. The battle showcased the gen V metagame quite well IMO.

great use of slowbro, but the turn where the opponents skarm and excadrill were healed must have been awful.

I'm really surprised that latios survived that rock slide...

Nice battle didnt take way to long. Surprised me that Latios survived that rock slide and got the flinch. Keep them coming I tihnk you have some talent.

Nice warstory, you had good commentary and a pretty decent battle - the main problem was that your opponent seemed significantly less good than you, making it a tad less dramatic. But yeah, if you find better battles by all means post again :), though if you do this I'd like to see you tidy the format up a little bit: sometimes there were irregular spacings between turns, you could bold important events like KOs in the log, and maybe colour coordinate each team's moves.

Cannot complain about it was not bad, was not to good either, but compared to most things around now it was a nice read.

Unlike all prevoius warstories (but like the other one I reviewed a faw minutes ago), another good shot. Everything is good, but not great (except one or two comebacks from your opponent, you had a lot of momentum, but small hax and few misplays).

Format: 7/10
Battle: 7/10
Commentary: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

@all - Thank you for the rates. I will keep your comments in mind. I agree that the battle itself was a little lacking in suspense. I'll try and find a better one for next time.

I'll work on the format.

>mfw when there's a decent warstory on UT

Will rate when I finish reading. Sort out your sprites btw

Just a question, what is wrong with the sprites? I don't see anything wrong.

Compared to the battle we've seen in this gen, this is WONDERFULL.
Compared to what we had in 4 gen, this is standart.

I really hope this becomes standart again...
