Cycle 32 Calyrex-Ice

1737146997179.png
:sv/calyrex-ice:
Our next round is Calyrex-Ice, sometimes known as "Better Melmetal", "the pinnacle of slow Ice types", and "Calyrex's slightly less broken forme"! Its featured set is Choice Band, which is most well known for its usage on Trick Room teams as "better Melmetal" thanks to the obscene power of Choice Band-boosted Glacial Lance combined with the snowball potential from its ability, but it's perfectly usable off of Trick Room as well as ferocious breaker able to cripple bulky switch-ins with Trick and support the team with Aromatherapy and at minimum trade in bad matchups thanks to its natural bulk and the absurd power of Glacial Lance.

Sets that set their own Trick Room are also usable, though I haven't experimented that much with them.
I also heard rumors of someone using Choice Scarf Calyrex-I, but that must be a joke....

Scarf Calyrex-Ice might seem strange, but it manages to outspeed Yveltal by one point. This allows it to funnily enough function as a Sticky Web pokemon.

Jingle Bells (Calyrex-Ice) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: As One (Glastrier)
Tera Type: Ice
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Glacial Lance
- High Horsepower
- Seed Bomb
- Trick

This pokemon is not a mindless sweeper. It has to be positioned carefully, as it relies on its bulk to get the ball rolling, because it struggles to OHKO some things at +1. However, its offensive typing and ability to snowball means your opponent has to respect it, because if it ever reaches +2, it's basically over for them. Its raw damage deals some decent damage, capable of 2HKOing most of the tier, which adds up, and its ability to force switches is unparalleled. And if you were worrying about it letting in defoggers, lets look at the hazard removers in the tier:
- Weak to ice
- Weak to ice
- Almost OHKOd without boost, and coming in after a teammate faints is obviously not an option.
- Who the fuck runs Defog on Arceus
-Lead
-Dies to everything
Your opponent has to tiptoe around it, and if they ever slip up, they'll find out why they call it "snowballing".

As for the teammates, I've already explained my process for making a Sticky Web team. To recap:
- Web Setter (I prefer Shuckle)
- Yveltal
- Arceus
- Special Attacker (Eternatus my beloved)
- Stallbreaker (C, G, B♭, A, G, F, G, E♭, F, D, B♭, G, D, D, C, B♭, C, G, B♭, C)
- Filler/Shitmon

Team Background

Well I didn't really intend to post another Fezandipiti team, but I used this today in NDBD so it fits. If this was in a few weeks I'd have another to post, but I could bring that to NDBD so I won't for now. After annoying the shit out of the NDUbers and NDBD discord spending an inordinate amount of time glazing Fezandipiti, I felt I should bring it at some point and put my money where my mouth is. I did bring the Fezandipiti team to Beers & Buds, but wanted to bring Fez to something a bit more serious. The first thing to do was to figure out exactly what I wanted Fezandipiti to be supporting. Intially I was going to bring Offensive Primal Kyogre and had a set and very specific EV spread that worked well with Fezandipiti that I spent a bit of time on. However, after a few test games the other day w Sami where he brought some Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM teams to see how it played out in practise rather than paper I began to explore other options. I do think the matchup is good and a fair few of the issues were definitely my poor play.

Consequently, I decided to build a few other Fezandipiti teams and see where that took me since it was still early in the week and I had a few teams I could bring that I liked if something didn't click. After a bit of fiddling I ended up with this team that I quite like. Choice Band Caly-I is a really fun mon when using it on balance as Glacial Lance is dopamine. Caly-I lets balance teams play far more loosely against non-HO due to Aromatherapy while still trading against some real annoying stuff on HO in a pinch. Caly-I has flaws that need to be compensated for which Fezandipiti helps a lot with which makes Calyrex-I far less of a tera hog, resulting in greater consistency. That is enough yapping for this section and I can yap some more in the next one. Caly-I ended up just being a sac this game, but I swear it is good. It didn't do anything when I brought it in Beers & Buds either, but that is because Dragon Dance Zygarde 6-0'd from the lead slot so Calyrex-I cannot be blamed there x.D.

Raison D'être

:pmd/groudon-primal: Primal Groudon serves the same role as on the Deoxys-A team. This Primal Groudon has more special bulk for random stuff and well...Utility Umbrella Fezandipiti takes a lot of the pressure off of Primal Groudon to answer defensive Primal Kyogre and I couldn't think of somewhere better to chuck the rest of the EVs. A little bit of wiggle room never hurt. With the benefit of hindsight I'd probably put Spikes on Primal Groudon. The biggest benefit is LO Yveltal and well Fezandipiti may as well be a honey badger with the lack of fucks it gives about that.

:pmd/ho-oh: Same set and EVs as last week. This time though that last moveslot is a lot more flexible as I do think this team can fit Whirlwind on Ho-Oh if Glare is on Zygarde. I did briefly consider Psych Up for memes, but decided it was best to be serious.

:pmd/arceus-dark: Same old Arceus-Dark. Since going through and calcing most hits in the tier v Arceus this has become my go to spread. As with last week, mixed def does work, but being able to setup on Meteor Beam Eternatus safely is so nice even without Fezandipiti. 52 SpD is needed for Yveltal anyways to provide additional setup opportunities so there is only so much phys def you can pump into it.

:pmd/zygarde-complete: Calyrex-I allows Zygarde to use Tera Water and I've forgotten how nice this feels both in the builder and in game. Not being scared shitless of Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM is something I could get used to again as I don't like Tera Fairy all that much outside of its utility in countering Dragon Dance Zygarde. 8 Spe enables Zygarde to outspeed -1 341 Arceus formes after Fezandipiti gets the slow U-Turn off and setup or phase them if they're looking annoying. They can't be both Tera Poison and Tera Fairy so between Fezandipiti, Zygarde, and Ho-Oh it is hard for Calm Mind Arceus formes to find a way to break through. Zygarde is still doing all that essential blanket physical wall except broken Ultra Necrozma thing. Glare is fine over Dragon Tail.

:pmd/fezandipiti: FezanGOAT. 23 Speed IVs are to underspeed -1 341 Arceus formes for the slow U-turn. Before the game I mentioned thinking about Charm as I felt a second attacking move wasn't really necessary on this team. Alluring Voice to catch Zacian-C switching in was the other main thing I considered. I ended up keeping Acid Spray despite this very physical team because I felt like those two options were a tad too niche and more Overheat or Judgment damage if the situation arises is always nice. It lets Primal Groudon seriously threaten Ho-Oh with Overheat without fearing Toxic due to Calyrex-I providing cleric support. Saying it does the usual Fezandipiti stuff feels very odd to type and I've been building with it a bit too much recently even if it is the GOAT.

:pmd/calyrex-ice: Caly-I is still one of my favourite mons to use and solves the Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM issue that most of my other Fezandipiti teams have despite being weak it. This is because Calyrex-I is a great offensive check to Dragon Dance Zygarde which frees my own Zygarde up to use Tera Water. Calyrex-I provides cleric support, a great wallbreaker, trick for fat. Perhaps most importantly for this team, it prevents a lot of HO threats from getting out hand. Tera Steel is mostly for Arceus as Swords Dance Tera Normal Double-Edge is something that is currently pretty trendy to bypass Coil Zygarde. Earthquake is uncommon on Arceus these days which lets Calyrex-I stonewall it. Regardless, it survives any +2 hit Arceus can throw at it and Glacial Lance needs only a slight amount of chip to OHKO. Tera Steel also helps provide a backup check to Ultra Necrozma and Zacian-C in a pinch.

The 4 Spe isn't speedcreep for Chansey, which should be 0 Spe IV for Alomomola anyways. It outspeeds paralyzed -1 Arceus formes which isn't that hard to facilitate. If Arceus cannot be paralyzed it means that Fezandipiti probably procced Toxic Chain. Calyrex-I goobs pretty much every Arceus forme anyways, but being able to avoid taking a hit means not having to potentially tera and then gets the ball rolling as resists don't tend to take even neutral Glacial Lance well. The one Arceus forme Calyrex-I has trouble with, Arceus-Water really is not an issue for this team between Primal Groudon and Tera Grass Ho-Oh / Fezandipiti. These three should also handle offensive Primal Kyogre well enough and defensive really is not an issue. Calyrex-I was just a sac in the replay, but it was pointed out that I should have gone to it on the last Arceus-Ground turn to force some positioning. Still love the horse though. Please try using it on balance/bo rather than Trick Room. Cancel Cult's Choice Scarf Webs idea is quite cool though.

OFFENSIVE TRICK ROOM CALYREX-I HO
:sv/calyrex-ice: :sv/glimmora: :sv/arceus-ground: :sv/eternatus: :sv/yveltal: :sv/zacian-crowned:

Offensive Trick Room Calyrex-I is not that bad. It does superb versus opposing offense and HO teams and is very potent when combined with Tera Fire, Fairy or Steel. I chose Fire though for the valuable burn immunity versus Ho-Oh, the resistances against Zacian-C, NDM, Overheat Primal Groudon and Fire Blast Eternatus. Swords Dance is also useful here to abuse passive Pokemon like Alomomola who may try to Protect stall you out (you don't need this really if you're Tera Steel, Seed Bomb is better). Never-Melt Ice is preferred over Heavy-Duty Boots because I already have Glimmora to stop hazards while it also helps me OHKO Arceus-Dark at +2 with Glacial Lance. Combine all this with Calyrex-I's power deterring common Defog users such as Ho-Oh, Giratina and even Yveltal, and it makes for a decent albeit niche fit on HO teams, as a Pokemon that can help wallbreak and handle opposing HO structures, especially Trick Room.

Glimmora is essential as the hazard lead. Arceus-Ground helps break through Steel- and Fire-types like Zacian-C, NDM and Primal Groudon for Calyrex-I lategame, while having Taunt for more passive Pokemon, notably wearing down Zygarde for Calyrex-I and Zacian-C. Eternatus is a simple HO threat dealing with Ho-Oh very effectively while also soft-checking Primal Kyogre who is a bit difficult to switch into for this team. Yveltal offers a way out against Ultra Necrozma and even Marshadow while being a very good stallbreaker for the team, while Zacian-C is the fastest Pokemon here and helps deal with Calm Mind Arceus-Dark/-Fairy who would be annoying for Yveltal and Eternatus specifically (especially when they can both Taunt and stop Calyrex-I from using Trick Room while also denting Arceus-Ground heavily).

EDIT: Calyrex-I also helps to stop DD Zygarde from abusing Glimmora

Cycle 33 Mega Salamence / Phazing Primal Groudon

Due to closeness of results lately, our next cycle will feature two Pokemon!

Submissions need only to include one of these categories.

:salamence-mega:Mega Salamence

analysis link
:salamence-mega: Mega Salamence is a fellow Flying-type move spammer most easily fit on offense that has had excellent tour showings lately. The metagame largely lacks Flying resistant-Pokemon, with the only standout resists being Zacian-C and Necrozma-DM, neither of which generally run bulky sets.

Unlike Rayquaza, however, it specializes in Dragon Dance sets, offering a more useful ability courtesy of Intimidate as well as much more set flexibility thanks to a much higher base Speed and workable defenses along access to useful moves like Roost and Facade.

However, teams actually featuring this Pokemon are somewhat few and far between, so let's change that!

Salamence @ Salamencite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Double-Edge / Return / Facade
- Earthquake / Facade
- Roost / Facade

:groudon-primal: Phazing Primal Groudon

The only limitations on Primal Groudon to fit this category is that it must run either Dragon Tail or Roar.

Ever get sick of all the Giratina-O and Zygarde hard-switching into your Primal Groudon?

Perhaps your Primal Groudon has had stuff like Ultra Necrozma, Zygarde, or maybe even Rayquaza and Mega Salamence use it as a setup opportunity one too many times?

Regardless of the reason, there's one thing all of these things dislike: being immediately forced out by a fat, super effective Dragon Tail.

I added this entry a while ago thinking of the post I made claiming that a properly-played SD + Heat Crash + Dragon Tail Primal Groudon has almost no real switch-ins defensively outside of Dondozo. That said, phazing is just a generally useful thing for Primal Groudon to have, considering its massive bulk and ability to check most things.

Mega Salamence Bulky Offense

:sv/salamence-mega: :sv/chien-pao: :sv/groudon-primal: :sv/ho-oh: :sv/arceus-fairy: :sv/landorus-therian:

Tired of using Mega Salamence on HO not gonna lie, it's just stale. Besides, back in USUM Ubers it was usable on balance and bulky offense teams, why can't it be useful now? Defensive variants are extremely eh, so instead I've opted for a Bulky Dragon Dance variant instead, with a bit of bulk to soft-check threats like Primal Groudon, Dragon Dance Zygarde and Rayquaza. The EVs let Mega Salamence always outspeed Primal Groudon/Kyogre, with enough bulk to avoid the OHKO from +1 Utility Primal Groudon's Stone Edge, basically +2 after Intimidate. Refresh is better than coverage since this lets us set up on passive threats like Alomomola, non-Spore Smeargle, Overheat Primal Groudon and Ho-Oh after Intimidate.

Chien Pao is necessary to punish both Necrozma-DM and Ultra Necrozma; it also helps versus Eternatus, which is why I prefer it over Marshadow despite stacking hazard weaknesses. Primal Groudon checks Zacian-C, Primal Kyogre and stacks Spikes for us. Ho-Oh removes hazards with Defog while being a strong support Pokemon, checking Calm Mind Arceus formes, especially Arceus-Fairy. Speaking of which, it's needed to handle Marshadow, Yveltal and Coil Zygarde for the team. Finally, Landorus-T offers as a pivot, Stealth Rock setter and also aids in checking Zacian-C, relieving pressure off of Primal Groudon; Tera Water is also necessary so we don't insta-lose against opposing Ice-types like Calyrex-I.

Cycle 34:mewtwo::mewtwo-mega-y::mewtwo-mega-x:

Most of Mewtwo's viability in National Dex Ubers comes from Mega Mewtwo Y's respectable 140 Speed that allows it to consistently beat out Pokemon like Eternatus while being able to threaten standard stops to Nasty Plot sweepers by virtue of Psystrike. Its access to Focus Blast and Ice Beam set it apart from Ultra Necrozma, allowing it to pop otherwise-strong stops like Arceus-Dark and defensive Zygarde.

Some ladder heroes have teched Tera on Mewtwo, however, to better beat stall while convincingly flipping Mewtwo's otherwise insanely poor Marshadow and Sucker Punch/Scarf Yveltal matchups, and Mewtwo itself sees niche usage on stall.

Mega Mewtwo Y is generally preferred, however, due to a lack of reliance on Tera, a more consistent speed tier that avoids speed ties with Eternatus, and a lack of life Orb recoil.

I've included :mewtwo-mega-x: for completeness, but I really don't think it has anything useful to do in the metagame...

Mewtwo-Mega-Y @ Mewtwonite Y
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 88 Def / 204 SpA / 216 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Psystrike
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast / Fire Blast
Mewtwo @ Life Orb
Ability: Unnerve / Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Fairy / Fighting
- Nasty Plot
- Psystrike
- Tera Blast / Focus Blast
- Earth Power / Ice Beam / Taunt

Teams must include a Mewtwo.

Submissions are open until

weird ahh mmx team
:mewtwo-mega-x::groudon-primal::marshadow::arceus-fairy::zygarde::ho-oh:

watch out sami

Mewtwo-Mega-X @ Mewtwonite X
Ability: Unnerve
Tera Type: Psychic
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe or 28 Atk / 228 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Low Kick
- Ice Beam / Nasty Plot
- Stone Edge
- Taunt / Psychic / Recover / Self-Destruct

This team I built a while ago just to try out :mewtwo-mega-x: and my idea was to use it together with :marshadow: to get a nice fightspam combo. :mewtwo-mega-x: also comes with the added bonus of baiting in :ho-oh: and sniping it with a big Stone Edge. I use a Nasty Plot mixed set with Psychic, to seal the bait that it is probably :mewtwo: :mewtwo-mega-y: and also because Psystrike going off the defense is stupid since it has the stronger Low Kick for that already. If you wanted you could probably also run like Ice Beam + something like Taunt instead to snipe shit like :zygarde: but I have a team with a lot of allies that handle it well, with Spectral Thief from :marshadow: Toxic Tera Fairy :zygarde: and :arceus-fairy::ho-oh: for super effective damage and phazing respectively. I went with Toxic :zygarde: cuz I liked that it could bait in :arceus: formes and :ho-oh: and get a surprise Toxic on them. I added :ho-oh: for Defog throughout longer games :groudon-primal: for consistency and Taunt Rocks :arceus-fairy: because I ljke it.

:mewtwo: :shuckle: :yveltal: :arceus-ground: :kyurem-black: :kyogre-primal: Back To The Lab Again
I learned what Mewtwo did like two days ago, and now I'm going to write an article about it. Should I have posted the team I am still using to learn this pokemon? No.

I might not have known Mewtwo, but by golly do I know webs, so when they told me it excels on those teams, I knew I had it in me to game with Mewtwo.
Ah yes, the star of the show. Pressure was chosen because there's two pokemon in the entire tier that only occasionally run berries, that being Arceus and Eternatus. Arceus runs Lum Berry, which obviously does not matter, and Eternatus runs Shuca Berry, which wont actually matter that much considering Mewtwo has Psystrike. I chose the tera Fairy set because 1: that was all that I knew existed until five minutes ago, and 2: I will NOT rely on Focus Blast.
Most of you probably already know my view about the best web setter, but I don't think that there should be much argument that Shuckle is the best web setter for Mewtwo. Mewtwo really wants entry hazards, because it ensures a Psystrike OHKO on quite a few important targets, making Shuckle the logical choice thanks to its ability to set rocks and not have to forfeit turn one against Dragon Dance Zygarde.
There are a few things I always want in a Sticky Web team, and Yveltal is one of them. I don't think I have to explain why it is so good on webs, but there are a few choices that I will have to. First, I do not run tera Fire to beat Arceus-Fairy. I find it's usually more beneficial to just sac Yveltal and save the tera for later, something especially valuable on this team since Mewtwo is a tera hog. This was a pretty big problem I ran into when building this team. Second, I usually like to run Knock-Off, but I always want at least one priority move on every team I make, and I was unable to fit it anywhere else.
I don't think I have ever used Arceus Ground prior to this team, but it was recommended to me by bumbo himself. That might show in what I am about to say, but I think non Groundium-Z sets are a bit too reliant on tera for me to run alongside Mewtwo. Unfortunately, this dramatically decreases how many other options I have to build with, because so many of the best pokemon on webs rely on a Z-Crystal. This also means I cannot run Extreme Killer, a set I find almost necessary for web teams, so I was definitely out of my comfort zone with this team.
The last trait I want in a Sticky Web team is an ability to beat stall. I already have Yveltal, but I don't want to rely on just one pokemon for the matchup. Black Kyurem is good enough at this, and is also a pokemon that doesn't have to rely on tera that much, while also not needing a Z-Crystal. It is also just generally strong. Its EV spread was made because I prefer to have all of my pokemon be able to outspeed Phermosa in webs.
To round out the team, I added in Primal Kyogre. Very little about this has to be explained. Primal Kyogre is great on webs, and It doesn't compete for the tera or Z-Crystal slot.

:glimmora::grimmsnarl::zacian-crowned::eternatus::zygarde-complete::mewtwo-mega-y:MMY Screens HO - Glimmora Variation

I actually gave a variant of this team to Rei for NDFL and spent a good amount of time farming bumboclaat with it afterward :)

Basically, Screens gives MMY the ability to actually set up on things without immediately getting wrecked by priority afterward.

MMY for its part works very well vs bulkier teams; Focus Blast not only beats Arceus-Dark but also gives MMY a way to actually beat physical walls like Dondozo and Alomomola (oh my god a nasty plot sweeper that beats physical walls?!)

Remainder of the team aims to target the things that MMY might struggle to break;
DD Zygarde is completely evil behind screens, gaining the ability to set up on almost everything, including stuff like Offensive Ho-Oh that specifically invested in offenses for this exact set.
Zacian-C appreciates screens greatly easing its setup opportunities and protecting it from revenge killing or trading attempts by stuff like Ditto, Primal Groudon, Scarf Yveltal, or otherwise.
Eternatus finally keeps the pressure on Ho-Oh while putting pressure on those same mons. It doesn't benefit as much from screens, but it does benefit quite a bit from the other members of the team overloading its shared checks.

:mewtwo::smeargle::kyogre::yveltal::necrozma-dusk-mane::marshadow:

1. Sticky web
Regardless of whether it's X, Y, or Base Mewtwo, the only common weakness is Crowned Zacian. However, since Zacian is completely ineffective against sticky web teams, the decision was made to build around Sticky Web support.

2. Choosing Mewtwo’s Form

This decision was made without hesitation—the choice is Base Mewtwo.
  1. Base Mewtwo has no accuracy issues, whereas Mewtwo-Y suffers from accuracy problems (Fire Blast, Focus Blast).
  2. Against certain threats like Marshadow, Arceus-Dark, and Yveltal, Terastallizing isn't as necessary as one might think.
  3. With Sticky Web set up, there is no meaningful difference between having 130 or 140 Speed.

3. Primal Kyogre
  1. Does not consume Terastallization resources.
  2. They don’t share any common defensive checks (except for Ferrothorn).
  3. Sp.A Primal Groudon could fulfill a similar role, but Primal Kyogre enables easy wins with Calm Mind against certain teams, making it the better choice.
4. Yveltal Added
Excluding smeargle, the current team has no way to manage Webs. Yveltal was added to address this issue.

5. Solgaleo-Z NDM Added
All three Pokémon so far are special attackers. While Mewtwo is technically closer to a physical attacker due to Psystrike, the team still lacks a strong physical option.

Solution: Solgaleo-Z NDM Added
Reasons for this choice:
  1. Does not consume Terastallization resources.
  2. Can create a deadly 50/50 situation with Ultra Necrozma, making it a high-reward pick.
  3. Shuts down mortal spin.
  4. Stronger than Ultra Necrozma against Arceus + Marshadow teams.
6. Marshadow Added
This team gets completely destroyed if Arceus appears, and aside from Yveltal, it lacks strong face-to-face performance. Thus, Marshadow was added.
Since the only Pokémon with Taunt so far is Yveltal, Bulk Up was not chosen. Instead, Rock Tomb was selected to ensure it can reliably check Ho-Oh.
