Hi all! I have seen a number of themed teams around the site and the only one that seems to have some success at all is a steel themed team I seem to forget the name of and it's owner. Regardless, seeing this I though to myself "I wonder if I could seriously make a themed team that is competitively viable?" Now of course lets not kid ourselves, this is hard to do and too many people suggest wildcards just so the team's all good because a certain pokemon will pick up the loose ends. But for the sake of this guide, I wish to not have a single wildcard and stick to the true nature of the team and do as good with it competatively as it possibly can. And remember if I wanted to win consecutive matches I'd just use one of my many teams to do exactly that, but nothing truely beats having a game with your mates using a team that a bit out of the ordinary, and fun to use.
Presenting the Eeveelution Baton-Pass Chain Team!!!
And now an in depth view of the team...
THE LEAD
Espeon @ Focus Sash
Trait: Sunchronise
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 HP / 64 SpD / 192 Spe
- Taunt / Shadow Ball
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
Leads of the battle in style, as many phychics do carrying the much dreaded Taunt with suprising speed to catch out all leads slower than Espeon, and with a decrease in Azelf and Aero and an increase in slower leads such as Metagross and Swampert, Taunt goes down well. Although I'm contenplating Shadow Ball (better coverage vs common leads over Phychic) over Taunt incase Espeon is taunted himself, and the other 3 moves are much needed. The rest of the set is derived from "Espyjump" employing a "Calm Mind Sub" strategy and get the passes going.
THE SPEED DEMON PASSER
Jolteon @ Salac Berry / Leftovers
Trait: Volt Absorb
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Charge Beam
- Agility
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
The Speed Booster seems a logical choice for a lead but considering Espeons early support as well as being fast and deadly special attacker can rather fend for himself and instead passes off to Jolt at this stage, by the first pass. Charge is there mainly for Taunt, though with Calm Minds under the belt from Espeons help and Jolteons impressive SpA stat, Charge Beams boost stat up rather lethal. Furthermore, once Agililty is up the job is done for Jolteon but there's no excuse for it not to attempt to further pass more boosts to the recievers if it has the time!
--------------------------------------------------------------
If a sub fails to get up before the pass however, Jolteon may not have the HP, nor the time to Sub / Agility before he continues that essential speed boost. I only think that Salac works because the speed boost is that essential and even if a Sub is up, it won't live a single attack giving no opportunity to boost via Agility, instead remaking subs untill its impossible to make another and by this stage, Salac activates. If Jolteon was a revenge set-up on a non Baton-Pass team then the standard set would suffice but this is not the case. Considering most Eeveelutions are quite slow, and longevity and speed to the chain is the key, I believe Salac Berry will save my ass a couple of times at least! Need some help here...
THE TRAP PASSER
Umbreon @ Leftovers
Trait: Synchronise
Nature: Careful
EVs: 252 HP / 92 SpD / 164 Spe
- Mean Look
- Wish
- Yawn
- Baton Pass
Somewhat of a noveltly on most teams, but with the combination of the moveset above into a Baton Pass Chain is like bread and butter. Sleep inducing will allow the already bulky Eeveelution to get up all 4 moves without a giant degree of trouble, with Yawn first turn, the opponent is either switching or sleeping and Wish is a safe move. If stuck against a pokemon Umbreon easilly handles then Mean Look can be used first before Yawn to ensure the opponents sleep without escape, and that this mediocre threat can not flee from the entire chain as it hopelessly sleeps as the chain strengthens. Prediction is the key, as switches move before everything but Pursuit and waisting a turn of Mean Look to a switched counter isn't a pretty site. However, the status and healing Umbreon provides is worth risking.
THE DEFENSE PASSER
Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
Nature: Bold
EVs: 128 HP / 252 Def / 128 Spe
- Surf
- Acid Armor
- Wish
- Baton Pass
The bulky water Eeveelution byno suprise enters the fray taking the crown of one of the most reliable Baton Passers in the game IMO. Bulk, pure Water typing, Wish, powerful STAB and an excellent move to Baton Pass off, Vaporeon sets up with impunity upon the opponent. Providing a much needed physical defence boost is all too important as the reciever rather thrives in special defence, yet lacks on the physical spectrum.
THE SLEEP INDUCER / ATTACK PASSER
Leafeon @ Wide Lens / Leftovers
Trait: Leaf Guard
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 132 HP / 124 Atk / 252 Spe
- Swords Dance
- Grasswhistle / Substitute
- Wish / Substitute
- Baton Pass
Yet another Sleep Inducer, and quite neccessary too, as most pokemon won't stay asleep for the duration between the two crafty Eeveelutions. Leafeon has a rather impressive defence stat, meaning it can relativewly easily set up Wish and Swords Dance for the chain. If paired up in a tricky situation, Lens boosted Grasswhistle can save the day and ensure an effortless set-up Swords Dance which is the crux of the set, and hopefully get some Wishes under the belt during the course.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I instantly though Leftovers at this set, and then reallised the horrible accuracy of Grasswhistle and knew that this single move would make the chains life a lot easier. Indeed not using such low accuracy moves is the safe option and considering Leafeon's already respectible initial speed plus the speed boost passes, Grasswhistle will certainly pay off. Leafeon seems to fit quite well ordered before the reciever and getting in as many Swords Dances is paramount for superpowered Quick Attacks. Further a safe entry is almost compolsary considering Life Orb recoil and Stealth Rock weakness, so Wish / Sub needs the time to set up. The 2nd/3rd slots need major attention so help me out here...
THE RECIEVER
Flareon @ Life Orb / Wise Glasses
Trait: Flash Fire
Nature: Mild
EVs: 192 Atk / 184 SpA / 124 Spe
- Flamethrower
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Return
- Baton Pass / Quick Attack
The reciever in it's best attempt of a Mixed Attacker! Indeed the movepool of all Eeveelutions generally lacks and if only Superpower didn't lower stats I'll be working so hard to boost, I'd happily replace Return! Regardless this gets good coverage and hits everything neutral but Fire types (Heatran!), Dialga and Giratina, (luckily the later two are uber!) The set is quite simple however, with two main attacks that will boosted to great levels and having good coverage is great, with it rounded off by Normal and finnished with the ability to Baton Pass back to finnish a threat he can't handle whilst retaining boosts, and potentially racking up some more!
--------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of Heatran, with the common nature of the fiery bastard running loose on the Smogon server ain't a good feeling. Baton Pass will be needed every time I wish to switch unless I want to loose all the boosts my little Eevees would have worked so hard for. A Baton pass back to Jolteon to take Gyarados, or to Vaporeon on a Heatran seems nice, but then pokemon such as the Dragons spring to mind. Looking back, there is no Ice coverage, and in reality no room for it to fit, yet a boosted return from Flareon would suffice to defeat a Salamence or Flygon, but here we for some reason have 4 slot syndrome on an Eeveelution, never thought I'd see the day. Flamethrower is needed, Hidden Power is needed and so is Baton Pass to get out when needed. The question is on Quick Attack which will undoubtedly save my ass against certain opponents with priority of their own, (*cough*, Infernape).
At this point in the process I had though that the best contender for a reciever was still a mixed attacker, and Flareon is the only Eevee who really claims this role. I thought of replacing Flareon with the potent Glaceon who otherwise doesn't earn a spot who seemed a lesser defense passer with inferior typing to Vaporeon. However, with insanely boosted special attack as well as the most powerful Ice Attacks in the game (let alone Ice Beam is feared enough), I thought Glaceon could perhaps replace with a set of (Ice Beam / Shadow Ball / Hidden Power [Fighting] / Baton Pass), only because the physical spectrum is offputting on sucha pokemon. Yet it seems logical to have a mixed reciever even though Glaceon could pass out if Blissey shows up. Leafeon would then perhaps drop Swords Dance for Leaf Blade / Substitute / Roar, max HP or shift the Atk into Def. However, I really need some help on this section perhaps the most of the itallisised sections...
______________________________________________________
Well that's the team, in all honesty it could seriously work a couple of times, and I can honestly it comes with a suprise factor considering so many pokemon enter the OU battlefield and the opponent can't exactly expect what they haven't often seen. Teams like this are just on that level of the game that require true skill and knowledge for the game, something I have come to grasp more and more in the few recent years that I have really got into the game. But there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of using a truely fun team that contains some of your favoutites in to win in such a way.
______________________________________________________
A word of note to all the Raters, obviously slashes aren't going to help me out here and I need a serious rate to let me know which item move is best out of my opinions. I personally believe that what is first slashed is most appropriate given the style of each pokemon, and that it's still farily competatively viable but I need all the help I can get still.
This has taken some thought, and I admit prior to the post of this RMT I had not tested it, needless to say with my original plans I didn't exactly look at the team and see a flawless masterpeace and tested it for a week and laying out its problems to the community as I have usually done. Regardless all your help will be gladly apprieciated in any way shape or form, although I stress that this team only contains Eeveelutions as this is for fun and not 100% competative success. If however we can make a team together which can offer as much wins as possible under these constraints it will be a triumph!
