VGC My First Dragonite Reg G Team

Hello All

I’m a returning player who has dipped in and out of the competitive scene over the 26 (ouch!) years Pokémon and I have been co-existent. I’m not anything approaching an expert on the Regulation G meta at all so I’m appealing to you all for help!

I’m not saying this is a meta team, or even a good one. But I wanted to build the best team I can within the current ruleset using my favourite Pokémon of all time:

149-0.png

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Outrage
- Stomping Tantrum
- Aerial Ace/Aqua Jet

Gen 9 has been kind to my favourite dumb-faced dragon. This is the well-known Tera-Normal Extreme Speed set, adapted for doubles with the Choice Band. When holding a Choice Band, Dragonite becomes a very scary Pokemon boosting its already very high attack stat.

The Inner Focus Ability matches beautifully making Dragonite immune to flinch and Intimidate.
This EV spread allows Dragonite to be as fast as possible while maximizing its Attack and rounding out its bulk, allowing it to live attacks such as Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Dazzling Gleam

Extreme Speed is a priority move that hits the majority of the metagame for neutral damage, making it ideal to lock into.
Outrage is used as its Dragon-type STAB move and allows it to OHKO almost the entire metagame.
Stomping Tantrum gives coverage into resistant Steel-types like Kingambit and Archaludon.
Aerial Ace allows Dragonite to OHKO Pokemon like Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, and Amoongus without having to be lock into Outrage. An alternative option would be Aqua Jet which provides a secondary priority option and allows Dragonite to hit Ghost types that might otherwise be immune to Extreme Speed.

Tera Normal boosts Extreme Speeds power and nullifys Dragonites standard weaknesses to Fairy and Ice in particular.

Due to Dragonite's heavy dependence on Extreme Speed, Pokemon that can block priority moves such as Farigiraf, Tsareena, and Indeedee-F limit its effectiveness. Dragonite also struggles against Pokémon with high physical bulk that can take an Extreme Speed and threaten it in return such as Great Tusk, Iron Hands, Amoonguss, and Garganacl. The rest of the team will be designed to counter these weaknesses starting with:

1002-0.png

Chien-Pao @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sword of Ruin
Level: 50
Tera Type: Ghost/Stellar
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Spinner
- Sucker Punch
- Sacred Sword
- Protect

Another way Gen 9 has been kind to Dragonite. Chien-Pao is a fantastic physical attacker that can improve its own and its teammates' physical damage through Sword of Ruin. It is very effective with priority attackers such as Dragonite, as well as other fast physical attackers that we'll feature later in the team. Chien-Pao is an excellent offensive Pokemon in its own right too, bearing a great offensive typing and a fantastic Speed tier. It is capable of threatening popular Pokemon like Koraidon, Miraidon and Calyrex-S

Ice Spinner is a STAB option that easily grabs OHKOs on the likes of Landorus and Tornadus while clearing unfavourable terrains that Pokémon like Indeedee-F, Miraidon, and Rillaboom set up.
Sucker Punch gives Chien-Pao a priority option that can KO faster Pokemon such as Speed Booster Energy Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle. Sacred Sword allows Chien-Pao to hit Pokemon that resist its STAB moves like Incineroar and Zamazenta-C.
Sacred Sword OHKOs many relevant Pokemon that resist Chien-Pao's STAB combination such as Kingambit, Chi-Yu, and opposing Chien-Pao.

Chien-Pao can use Tera Ghost to become immune to Fighting while also avoiding priority attacks like Fake Out and Extreme Speed that would otherwise break its Focus Sash. Tera Stellar is a more offensive option that allows Chien-Pao to pick up KOs that it would otherwise miss out on like bulky Flutter Mane, especially under Tailwind which will be featured later in the team.

The best check for Chien-Pao is the ubiquitous Incineroar, which can lower its Attack with Intimidate as well as resist both its STAB moves.
Urshifu-R makes a great addition here as it can remove Pokemon that resist both of Chien-Pao's STAB moves like Incineroar, while Chien-Pao can threaten Grass- and Dragon-types that resist Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes like Rillaboom and Raging Bolt while they both benefit from Sword of Ruin

892-1.png

Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Safety Goggles
Level: 50
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 60 HP / 76 Atk / 20 Def / 196 SpD / 156 Spe
Tera Type: Ghost
Adamant Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Taunt
- Protect

Urshifu-R is an excellent offensive Pokemon that can threaten metagame staples such as Incineroar, Chien-Pao, and Terapagos thanks to its fantastic typing and STAB moves, enabled by Unseen Fist

Taunt is utilized to shut down supportive Pokemon and Trick Room setters such as Amoonguss and Farigiraf as well as prevent Pokemon like Calm Mind Terapagos and Raging Bolt from setting up. Fargiraf in particular would otherwise block Dragonite and Chein-Paos priority moves.

Safety Goggles lets Urshifu-R ignore Amoonguss's Spore and Rage Powder, which is significant, as Amoonguss resists Urshifu-R's STAB moves.

The defensive EV investment allows Urshifu-R to survive Rillaboom's Miracle Seed-boosted Grassy Glide and almost always survive Raging Bolt's Thunderclap. The Speed EVs allow Urshifu-R to outspeed -1 Flutter Mane and Miraidon

Tera Ghost provides Urshifu-R with a Fake Out immunity, allowing it to keep momentum, and a Fighting immunity that lets Urshifu-R take on Zamazenta-C.

Urshifu-R struggles against Rillaboom and Raging Bolt, however, which take its attacks exceptionally well and threaten it with strong priority STAB moves. Ogerpon-W is also an issue, as it can redirect Surging Strikes and is faster, allowing it to hit Urshifu-R for huge damage with Horn Leech.

This makes Tornadus a great partner threatening the Grass-types and also provide speed and weather control, making up for Urshifu-R's mediocre Speed tier and handling the otherwise problematic Koraidon which can significantly weaken Urshifu-R with the sun it sets up. Urshifu-R can take on threats like Chien-Pao and Chi-Yu for the two in return.

641-0.png

Tornadus @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 4 SpA / 132 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Bleakwind Storm
- Tailwind
- Taunt
- Rain Dance

Tornadus is one of the strongest support Pokemon bearing a great toolkit, including Tailwind and Prankster-boosted Taunt. It can also provide a check to weather-setting Pokemon like Koraidon and Groudon with opposing weather. All of these tools are appreciated by the team so far.

Bleakwind Storm provides good damage into Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W.
Tailwind is the most effective speed control Tornadus has access to.
Taunt helps shut down Amoonguss and helps to manage other Trick Room Pokemon like Porygon2.
Tornadus can use Rain Dance to help itself hit Bleakwind Storms, to help support its teammates by boosting the damage of Water-Type moves for Urshifu-R, or to counter weather based teams.

This EV spread focuses on bulk, surviving Mystic Water Surging Strikes from Urshifu-R and Tera Fairy Choice Specs Moonblast from Flutter Mane. The low Speed investment ensures that Tornadus sets up its own weather too.

Covert Cloak prevents Fake Out flinches from Incineroar and Rillaboom. It also negates any secondary effects from moves like Rock Slide and Icy Wind. This ensures that Tailwind goes up.

Tera Dark provides an immunity to Prankster Taunt which might otherwise shut down all the supportive tools Tornadus has to offer.

Tornadus, however, struggles to create field pressure as a singular Pokemon. Chien-Pao, Raging Bolt, Iron Hands and Archaludon are bad matchups for it because of their ability to quickly remove it from the field. Checks to Tornadus include Miraidon and Raging Bolt. Their ability to resist its attacks and fire back with powerful Electric-type STAB moves can threaten basically the whole team at the moment.

Enter the solution

645-0.png

Landorus @ Choice Scarf
Level: 50
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 132 HP / 4 Def / 116 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Steel
Modest Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Sandsear Storm
- U-Turn

Landorus can help to beat some of these threats with strong Sandsear Storms in Rain while being immune to Miraidon's and Raging Bolt's Electric-type STAB moves. Tornadus also sets up Tailwind, letting Landorus move before non-Tailwind teams in return.

Choice Scarf allows Landorus to outrun nearly all unboosted Pokemon, letting it act as a frightening revenge killer. Landorus can OHKO top metagame Pokemon like Incineroar, Zacian-C and Kingambit.

Sludge Bomb allows Landorus to OHKO Ogerpon-H while threatening huge damage to Assault Vest Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W as well as hitting Fairy-types like Zacian, Clefable and Hatterene super effectively.

Tera Steel allows Landorus to resist Ice while also giving a neutrality against Water-type STAB moves from common Pokemon like Urshifu-R and Ogerpon-W.

The EV spread allows it to survive Tera Water Surging Strikes from Urshifu-R while Terastallized and Moonblast from Choice Specs Flutter Mane. The investment in Special Attack allows it to OHKO uninvested Urshifu-R safely.

However, Landorus has a poor matchup against Chien-Pao, Calyrex-I, and Kyogre, which can all OHKO Landorus. It also struggles against Tailwind teams, which can remove it before it can deal significant damage. Once Terastallized, Ogerpon-W threatens huge damage on Landorus, while also taking reduced damage from Sludge Bomb. These threats are addressed by Tornadus, Dragonite and Chien-Pao who are already present on the team.

The eagle-eyed will have noticed that there is not a restricted Pokémon on the team as of yet but the team is a delicate balance of synergies so whom can we add without upsetting the whole team?

888-1.png

Zacian-Crowned @ Rusted Sword
Level: 50
Ability: Intrepid Sword
EVs: 204 HP / 76 Atk / 20 Def / 12 SpD / 196 Spe
Tera Type: Fairy
Adamant Nature
- Behemoth Blade
- Play Rough
- Sacred Sword
- Protect

Zacian-C is a strong Restricted Pokemon in Regulation G. Zacian-C's absurd Speed, ability, and amazing typing make it one of the most dangerous physical threats allowing it to remove metagame threats such as Miraidon, Flutter Mane, Lunala and Koraidon.

Play Rough threatens Koraidon and common Steel-resistant foes like Raging Bolt, Iron Hands, and Urshifu-R.
Sacred Sword is present for coverage to threaten a 2HKO on Pokemon Zacian-C may otherwise struggle to break through, such as Incineroar and Zamazenta-C.

The defensive EVs allow Zacian-C to survive +3 Body Press from Zamazenta-C and avoid the 2HKO from Calyrex-S's Astral Barrage, while the Attack investment provides Zacian-C with the ability to 2HKO bulky Calyrex-S with Behemoth Blade. The Speed EVs allow Zacian-C to outspeed 135 speed foes that have a neutral nature, such as Modest Miraidon.

Tera Fairy sheds Zacian-C's weaknesses to Fire- and Ground-type moves such as Chi-Yu's Heat Wave and Ursaluna-B's Earth Power and greatly boosts its damage, allowing Zacian-C to OHKO Kyogre and Terastallized Miraidon

Zacian-C especially struggles with Incineroar, which weakens it through Intimidate and can further cripple it with Will-O-Wisp or threaten it with Flare Blitz. Zacian-C also struggles to damage Fire-types like Ogerpon-H and Tera Fire Calyrex-I as it has no coverage for these. Amooonguss can be troublesome, as it takes Zacian-C's attacks well and can slow it down with Spore too.

This makes our Urshifu-R an excellent partner, as it can threaten all of Zacian-C's checks and appreciates how Zacian-C reliably removes Raging Bolt and Miraidon.
Our Chien-Pao can help Zacian-C break through the above checks with Sword of Ruin.
Tailwind support from Pokemon like our Tornadus is greatly appreciated too, allowing Zacian-C to maintain its Speed advantage against opposing speed control.

The team can be seen in action in my ham-hands in the following replays:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9vgc2024regg-2157191890 (vs Lunala Trick Room)
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9vgc2024regg-2157195455 (vs Kyogre)
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9vgc2024regg-2157197193-fghy9o6mtpvnjyfthbdv3g21mvwwcwopw (vs Calyrex-S Trick Room)
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9vgc2024regg-2157201368 (vs Miraidon)
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9vgc2024regg-2157204736-svl45jbyeobvge8i82g1zruynrekecppw (vs Calyrex-I)

As I'm sure you can see from those I have little to no practical experience to speak of in this format so really I’m looking for sanity checks to make sure I’m not doing something dumb or overlooking anything I'm just not aware of.

Please feel free to take and use the team I'm not precious about it at all: https://pokepast.es/8682ea78092ccff5
Just let me know how you get on or see some of your replays! Post them below!

I welcome all comments and suggestions but its ultimately a Dragonite team so I’m probably not gonna take him out (I know Rayquaza is the 'new Dragonite'), but everything else is fair game!

Thank you!!

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Outrage
- Stomping Tantrum
- Aerial Ace

Gen 9 has been kind to my favourite dumb-faced dragon. This is the well-known Tera-Normal Extreme Speed set, adapted for doubles with the choice band.

Move choices are pretty standard from what I gather: Outrage for STAB, Stomping Tantrum covers steel types, Aerial Ace covers some of its standard partners weaknesses.

Who is the standard partner?

Chien-Pao @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sword of Ruin
Level: 50
Tera Type: Stellar
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Spinner
- Sucker Punch
- Sacred Sword
- Protect

Another way Gen 9 has been kind to Dragonite. Sword of Ruin makes Extreme Speed hit even harder.

As for the moves: Ice Spinner clears psychic terrain for Dragonite, Sucker Punch is the other STAB and has some nice utility, Sacred Sword is some nice coverage and Protect along with a Focus Sash ensure Sword of Ruin stays up as long as possible.

Tera Stellar allows Chien Pao to steal the odd OHKO it might not otherwise manage in an emergency.

Tornadus @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 4 SpA / 132 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Bleakwind Storm
- Tailwind
- Taunt
- Rain Dance

One of the better support ‘mons and offers good synergy with fast attackers like Chien-Pao. It offers Taunt, Weather, Speed control and offensive pressure through Bleakwind Storm.

Altogether it offers a counter to Trick Room and Amoonguss which can mess with Dragonite and Chien Pao

Rain Dance is preferred over Sunny Day due to the remaining Pokemon on the team that we’ll get to in a second!

The covert cloak and Tera Dark offer counters to Fake Out and Prankster Taunt respectively.

Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Unseen Fist
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 44 HP / 156 Atk / 4 Def / 92 SpD / 212 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet

The Dragonite of Tornadus’ Chien-Pao if that makes sense. That being said, there is also a lot of synergy with Chien-Pao through Sword of Ruin.

Urshifu can also aptly handle opposing Chien-Pao while Tornadus handles all the checks to Urshifu.

U-turn allows Urshifu-R to hit Ogerpon-W hard and get around Amoonguss. Aqua Jet is a good option to revenge kill weakened Speed Booster Energy Flutter Mane and Sucker Punch Chien-Pao, as well as a way to get around Raging Bolt's Thunderclap.

Choice Scarf lets Urshifu-R get the jump on and threaten an OHKO with Surging Strikes against Pokemon it normally cannot outrun like Flutter Mane.

Kyogre @ Mystic Water
Ability: Drizzle
Level: 50
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Def / 156 SpA / 4 SpD / 44 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Water Spout
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Protect

Well, we’re running out of team slots and I need to slot something restricted in somewhere. So what can synergise with the 4 team members we already have?

Well, Tornadus and Urshifu make great partners to Kyogre with one offering Tailwind Support and the other directly deals with checks to it. Kyogre can also influence weather as well as deal with a lot of the ‘mons that wall Dragonite.

Better than that, its a special attacker which now gives us a nicely balanced option between 2 special attackers and 3 physical ones.

So with all this so precariously balanced, what do we choose as the last member of the team without tipping the synergy?

Landorus @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
Level: 50
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 132 HP / 4 Def / 116 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Sandsear Storm
- Protect

A final special attacker that deals with some of the remaining threats to the team such as Raging Bolt and Archaludon.

It appreciates the speed control from Tornadus and also serves as a good counter to opposing Tornadus.

Tera Poison is for emergency defensive manoeuvres against Fairy Types. Sandsear Storm is nice in the rain too!

And thats the team. As I said I have no practical experience to speak of in this format so really I’m looking for sanity checks to make sure I’m not doing something dumb or overlooking.

I welcome all comments and suggestions but its ultimately a Dragonite team so I’m probably not gonna take him out.

Thank you!!
Welcome to the VGC community Arutha19! This team is actually pretty solid, yet has a few weaknesses (I am too a paonite fan).

- First up, I think that your team is literally CSR:calyrex-shadow:food, as Sucker Punch can't do anything to either Tera Fairy or redirection support from opposing Clefairy:Clefairy:. There is a simple fix, but we'll get to that later. Tornadus:tornadus:can work, and even if it is successful in shutting down Clefairy:clefairy:, opposing Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:can take care of your Chien-Pao:chien-pao:, and with Wide Guard, Bleakwind Storm, Origin Pulse, Water Spout and Sandsear Storm all don't do any damage to CSR:calyrex-shadow:(thanks to Wide Guard Mienshao:mienshao:).

- The other Calyrex form in CIR:calyrex-ice:feels like an issue, getting up Trick Room thanks to Farigiraf:farigiraf:blocking Tornadus:tornadus:'s Taunt. With Glacial Lance, everything except Kyogre:kyogre:and Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:are completely annihilated(yeah chien-pao:chien-pao:'s resist can't save you there). Those two stragglers get taken care of by opposing Rillaboom:rillaboom:.

Changes

Tera Stellar --> Tera Ghost on Chien-Pao:chien-pao:
Kind of necessary on the sword cat, as it grants immunities to Fighting-type attacks and more importantly, Fake Out. Tera Stellar feels a bit too weak.

Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:EV
The speed was changed, which altered the bulk. Having max speed is just better, as it gives Urshifu-R:urshifu-rapid-strike:the ability to outspeed CSR:Calyrex-shadow:.

Sandsear Storm --> Taunt on Landorus:landorus:
This primarily stops Farigiraf:farigiraf:from setting up Trick Room, which is a huge problem for the CIR:calyrex-ice:matchup.

That's it! I'd say that this team is well structured, and I recommend taking a look back at Kyogre:kyogre:'s EVs. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something feels off. Anyways, here is the importable of the team: https://pokepast.es/57715d432c83b52c
Good luck and happy battling!

Thank you for the warm welcome! Its nice to talk to a Dragonite-enjoyer!

This is exactly the sort of advice I need from someone who understands the metagame much better than I do. I'll implement the changes on the OP right now!

Kyogres EVs are the ones recommended by Smogon, but I'll do a bit more specific research and put my changes in the op too!

Welcome back to VGC! I see you like Dragonite, so will try my best to circumvent the team issues while keeping said Pokemon. Some major issues I find are:

  • Miraidon: Miraidon + Whimsicott + Farigiraf absolutely demolishes the team. Landorus gets obliterated by Draco Meteor, and rest of the team gets swept by Electro Drift.
  • Calyrex-I with Raging Bolt: They can ignore your speed control, and quickly check Kyogre, Dragonite and the genies. Taunt on Landorus isn't enough to stop it, as they can simply Glacial Lance and OHKO Landorus, getting a boost.
  • Zacian-C: Resists Dragonite and Chien-Pao, deals massive damage to Kyogre and OHKO Landorus.
  • Lunala Trick Room: Not an easy matchup. They survive Sucker Punch, has Wide Guard for Kyogre and sets up TR to enable Ursaluna sweep.
Those are the major issues I found with the team so far. Some changes I would recommend:

  • Zacian-C > Kyogre: Only thing Kyogre adds to the team here is Rain for Urshifu-R. Zacian-C outspeeds Miraidon in the Tailwind war, can threaten to OHKO Calyrex formes, hits Mienshao/Urshifu-R and KO's them, and can deal massive damage to Lunala. It is a fast strong Pokemon that works well with Chien-Pao's Sword of Ruin.
  • Choice Scarf > Life Orb on Landorus: This might sound weird, but Choice Scarf Landorus is very strong against Choice Scarf Chi-Yu, Miraidon, opposing Zacian, and Raging Bolt. Could even come in clutch vs Calyrex-S. A powerful threat in Tailwind.
  • Safety Goggles > Choice Scarf on Urshifu-R, with the moveset Surging Strikes/Close Combat/Taunt/Protect: A solid answer to Trick Room which ignores Amoonguss. You can take it a notch up by running Tera Ghost if you want to ignore Fake Out as well. But Tera Water is fine.
Try it out, see how it works. Hope this helps, good luck!

Thank you so much for your analysis!

I have been struggling against exactly the Pokémon you mentioned. Miraidon and Lunala have been a real challenge to overcome so I love the Zacian addition and the switch up on Urshifu too. I'll get to testing it with the changes applied to the OP.

Interestingly, you aren't the only person who has mentioned Scarfed Landorus so I have happily included that too! Please feel free to cast you eye over the changes to make sure I've understood them correctly.

U-turn > Protect on Landorus, since it's now Choice Scarf. Rest seems fine, and no problem!

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Outrage
- Stomping Tantrum
- Aerial Ace

Gen 9 has been kind to my favourite dumb-faced dragon. This is the well-known Tera-Normal Extreme Speed set, adapted for doubles with the Choice Band.

Extreme Speed is a priority move that hits the majority of the metagame for neutral damage, making it ideal to lock into.

Aerial Ace allows Dragonite to OHKO Pokemon like Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, and Amoongus without having to be lock into Outrage
Stomping Tantrum gives coverage into Steel-types like Kingambit and Archaludon.

The EVs allow Dragonite to be as fast as possible while maximizing its Attack and rounding out its bulk, allowing it to live attacks such as Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Dazzling Gleam.

Tera Normal boosts Extreme Speeds power and nullifys Dragonites standard weaknesses to Fairy and Ice in particular.
Its best partner supports it with Sword of Ruin and pressures Pokemon that prevent Extreme Speed, such as Indeedee and Flutter Mane.

Chien-Pao @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sword of Ruin
Level: 50
Tera Type: Ghost/Stellar
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Spinner
- Sucker Punch
- Sacred Sword
- Protect

Another way Gen 9 has been kind to Dragonite. Sword of Ruin makes Extreme Speed hit even harder.

Chien-Pao is an excellent offensive Pokemon in its own right too, bearing a great offensive typing and a fantastic Speed tier. Chien-Pao is capable of taking on the majority of the format, and it's especially strong against Tornadus and Landorus thanks to its typing and Sword of Ruin.

Ice Spinner is a useful Ice-type STAB move that provides a way to deal with Psychic Terrain which would prevent Dragonites Extreme Speed from working. Protect and the Focus Sash enable Chien-Pao to stay out on the field as long as possible in order to keep Sword of Ruin up for maximum turns.

Tera Ghost to removes its Fighting weakness and immunises against priority moves like Fake Out, which can be crucial for Focus Sash. Tera Stellar is also an option to keep up offensive momentum under some of the tailwind support found later in the team.

However, the ubiquitous Inceneroar has Intimidate and resists both of Chien-Pao's STAB attacks, which makes it difficult for Chien-Pao to deal with, therefore Urshifu-R is a strong partner as it utilizes Sword of Ruin and pressures Incineroar.

Safety Goggles lets Urshifu-R ignore Amoonguss's Spore and Rage Powder, which is significant, as Amoonguss resists Urshifu-R's STAB moves.
The defensive investment allows Urshifu-R to survive Rillaboom's Miracle Seed-boosted Grassy Glide and almost always survive Raging Bolt's Thunderclap. The Speed EVs allow Urshifu-R to outspeed -1 Flutter Mane and Miraidon

Tera Ghost can be opted for instead to provide Urshifu-R with a Fake Out immunity, allowing it to keep momentum, and a Fighting immunity that lets Urshifu-R take on Zamazenta-C.

This makes Tornadus a great partner threatening the Grass-types and also provide speed and weather control, making up for Urshifu-R's mediocre Speed tier and handling

Tornadus @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 4 SpA / 132 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Bleakwind Storm
- Tailwind
- Taunt
- Rain Dance

Tornadus is one of the strongest support Pokemon bearing a great toolkit, including Tailwind, Taunt and Rain Dance. It has amazing synergy with Urshifu-R and Chien-Pao too.

Bleakwind Storm provides good damage into Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W. Tailwind is the most effective speed control Tornadus has access to. Taunt helps shut down Amoonguss and helps to manage certain Trick Room Pokemon like Porygon2.

This ensures that Tailwind goes up

Tera Dark provides an immunity to Prankster Taunt, guaranteeing Tailwind

Tornadus, however, struggles to create field pressure as a singular Pokemon. Chien-Pao, Raging Bolt, Iron Hands and Archaludon are bad matchups for it because of their ability to quickly remove it from the field.

Checks to Tornadus include Miraidon and Raging Bolt. Their ability to resist its attacks and fire back with powerful Electric-type STAB moves can threaten both Tornadus and its bedfellow Urshifu-R

Enter the solution

Landorus @ Choice Scarf
Level: 50
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 132 HP / 4 Def / 116 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Tera Type: Steel
Modest Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Sandsear Storm
- U-Turn

Landorus can help to beat some of these checks with strong Sandsear Storms in Rain while being immune to Miraidon's and Raging Bolt's Electric-type STAB moves. Tornadus sets up Tailwind, letting Landorus move before non-Tailwind teams in return.

Landorus can OHKO top metagame Pokemon like Incineroar, Zacian-C and Kingambit. Sludge Bomb allows Landorus to OHKO Ogerpon-H while threatening huge damage to Assault Vest Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W

The eagle-eyed will have noticed that there is not a restricted Pokémon on the team as of yet but the team is a delicate balance of synergies so whom can we add without upsetting the whole team?

Zacian-Crowned @ Rusted Sword
Level: 50
Ability: Intrepid Sword
EVs: 204 HP / 76 Atk / 20 Def / 12 SpD / 196 Spe
Tera Type: Fairy
Adamant Nature
- Behemoth Blade
- Play Rough
- Swords Dance
- Protect

Zacian-C is a strong Restricted Pokemon in Regulation G, thanks to its superb typing as well as great Attack and Speed stats, which allow it to remove metagame threats such as Miraidon, Flutter Mane, Lunala and Koraidon. It also synergyses well with Chien-Pao.

Play Rough threatens Koraidon and common Steel-resistant foes like Raging Bolt, Iron Hands, and Urshifu-R. Swords Dance allows the potential to boost through Inceneroars Intimidate by brute force if necessary.

Zacian-C also struggles to damage Fire- and Steel-types like Ogerpon-H, Tera Fire Calyrex-I, Gholdengo, and Zamazenta-C if not packing coverage.

Chien-Pao can use Sacred Sword to threaten Zamazenta-C and Incineroar, as well as help Zacian-C break through the above checks with Sword of Ruin. Tailwind from Pokemon like Tornadus is greatly appreciated, allowing Zacian-C to maintain its Speed advantage against opposing speed control.

And that's the team. As I said I have no practical experience to speak of in this format so really I’m looking for sanity checks to make sure I’m not doing something dumb or overlooking anything I'm just not aware of.

Please feel free to take and use the team I'm not precious about it at all: https://pokepast.es/bf1d596c4df629e1

I welcome all comments and suggestions but its ultimately a Dragonite team so I’m probably not gonna take him out (I know Rayquaza is the 'new Dragonite), but everything else is fair game!

Thank you!!
As this has already gone through two iterations I don't have much to add but minute suggestions:

Zacian with Swords Dance may not be the best variant, the team does not seem poised to give zacian turns to setup. Usually pokemon such as amoonguss and incineroar are paired with Swords Dance Zacian, however your team probably benefits more from coverage in sacred sword to keep up offensive pressure, substitute to deal with trick room matchups effectively and sometimes be even more effective set up than Swords Dance, or even a tera blast coverage taking inspiration from other zacian tailwind teams. Sacred Sword in my opinion is the most preferable.

You may consider trying out aqua jet on dragonite. It benefits from rain and can hit ghost types such as caly s, flutter mane, and safely picks up pokemon that could otherwise tera ghost. Any move except extreme speed can be replaced for it if you find that one of those moves is not seeing usage however aqua jet tends to just be a preference thing.

Thank you so much!! Don’t worry I love the minutiae of teambuilding so I’m happy to drill down as deep as you like haha!

You’re absolutely right about Swords Dance on Zacian, it feels like a bit of a dead moveslot most of the time so its an easy change to accept

At the moment I’m finding uses for all Dragnoites moves, but as my skill improves and my knowledge of the team improves I will bear in mind that Aqua Jet is a very viable option in any of their places.

Thank you for your analysis!!
