Draft Munkidori

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 6 onwards

**Price Range**: 6-8 points

**Overview**: Munkidori is a mid-tier special attacker that can set up, wallbreak, pivot, or and deal valuable chip damage. Toxic Chain lets it turn moves such as Fake Out and U-turn into strong momentum swings by potentially inflicting Toxic on foes. Its strength as a special attacker is only limited by a poor coverage pool and middling bulk. It has to rely on the unreliable Focus Blast to hit Dark- and Steel-types, and its STAB combination is not very spammable, especially when Choice-locked. While it is somewhat fast, many faster foes can easily KO Munkidori, forcing it to use Choice Scarf more often than it wants.

Common Roles
========
**Offensive Pivot**: With access to U-turn and Parting Shot, Munkidori can easily pivot out against slower foes. U-turn synergizes with Toxic Chain, whereas Parting Shot can weaken incoming attacks for the Pokemon switching in. Running Frisk allows Munkidori to scout items on multiple opposing Pokemon. Using a Choice Scarf allows it to be a good speed control option, with Trick being able to cripple setup sweepers and walls.

**Wallbreaker**: Munkidori can very easily deals lots of damage to unprepared teams, as a strong Special Attack stat paired with Choice Specs or other damage-boosting options can allow it to deal large chunks of damage. It can use Nasty Plot to break through defensive answers.

**Toxic Spreader**: Toxic Chain allows Munkidori to threaten chip damage on opposing pokemon that are not immune to being poisoned. Fake Out gives it a free turn to potentially inflict Toxic on opposing Pokemon, and U-turn can allow it to switch out while also having a chance to poison foes. Using Fake Out or Protect against an already-poisoned Pokemon gives a free turn of chip damage. Venoshock can be ran here if the opposing Pokemon is poisoned, allowing Munkidori to threaten large amounts of damage.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Psychic, Psyshock, Sludge Wave, Venoshock, Future Sight, Psychic Noise

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot, Calm Mind

**Utility Moves**: U-turn, Trick, Parting Shot, Fake Out, Taunt, Clear Smog, Substitute, Toxic, Protect

**Coverage**: Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, Grass Knot

Niche Moves
========
**Sludge Bomb**: Sludge Bomb can be run over Sludge Wave to maintain damage while having a larger chance to inflict poison on the foe.

**Hex**: Hex can be a strong coverage move on sets that want to reliably poison foes, although it does not help too much against the better counters to that strategy.

Common Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Munkidori to outspeed many threats while either dealing significant damage to those threats or pivoting to a Pokemon better suited for the matchup.

**Damage-boosting Item**: Choice Specs allows Munkidori to deal large amounts of damage, whereas Life Orb lets it select different moves at the cost of recoil damage and a smaller damage boost. It can also use Twisted Spoon, Poison Barb, and Expert belt to deal slightly more damage to specific foes without drawback.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Pivoting and Toxic-spreading sets frequently enter the field, leaving Munkidori vulnerable to entry hazard damage. Heavy-Duty Boots allow it to more freely switch back in without having to worry about extra chip damage.

Niche Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Munkidori's lackluster bulk means in some matchups, having the ability to survive a single hit can allow it to eliminate a relevant threat. This should only be run if it is a dedicated lead or on a team with reliable entryhazard removal.

**Black Sludge**: Investing in Munkidori's bulk combined with Fake Out and Protect on more Toxic-focused sets let Black Sludge easily recover back resisted and weaker neutral hits.

**Assault Vest**: With its already decent Special Defense, Assault Vest Munkidori can relatively easily survive special attacks while still being able to deal damage, pivot, and spread Toxic.

**Resistance Berries**: As Munkidori is weak to Dark-type moves, Colbur Berry can allow it to power through a Sucker Punch. Kasib Berry can reduce the damage from an incoming Shadow Sneak.

Tera
========
While Munkidori is not the strongest Tera Captain, Tera Blast can give it a consistent coverage option for the Pokemon that would wall its STAB moves. Common Tera Types would be Tera Ground, Fire, and Fighting. In addition, Tera Dark and Flying allow Munkidori to mitigate a significant portion of damage from potential super effective Dark-, Ghost-, and Ground-type attacks.

Draft Strategy
========
Munkidori is a frail special attacker that can benefit teammates with its wallbreaking and Toxic-spreading abilities. It will not win games on its own in most cases, but it can provide valuable utility to its teammates.

**Reliable Steel-type Counters**: As Steel-type Pokemon are the best counters for Munkidori, they often run special bulk. Using Parting Shot on them would allow for the counter to more easily come in. This includes Pokemon like Great Tusk, Garchomp, and Rotom-H.

**Entry Hazard Support**: Good entry hazard support can allow Munkidori to KO Pokemon that would otherwise threaten it. These hazards can also wear down opposing Steel-types and compound with the chip damage from Toxic spreader sets. Pokemon like Ting-Lu, Gliscor, and Iron Treads fulfill this role.

**Slow Pivots**: While Munkidori can be a pivot, it is not bulky enough to switch into most attacks more than once. As such, a slower pivot such as Corviknight, Mandibuzz, and Alomomola can allow it to get in and apply pressure in different ways, whether it be to pivot on the opposing switch-in or deal large amounts of damage.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Bulky Pokemon can sit in front of foes poisoned by Munkidori, allowing the status damage to ultimately knock them out. Skeledirge, Gholdengo, and Moltres can all fulfill this role.

Checks and Counters
========
**Steel-types**: Steel-types are immune to Poison and resist Psychic, greatly forcing Munkidori to use the unreliable Focus Blast to damage them. Pokemon like Corviknight, Jirachi, and Gholdengo are excellent counters.

**Faster Wallbreakers**: Attackers that outspeed Munkidori and can easily KO it mitigate the threat it poses. This includes Meowscarada, Greninja, and Azelf.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially Defensive Pokemon take little damage from most of Munkidori's attacks, with the exception of Psyshock. In addition, they can run Lum Berry, Covert Cloak, or Rest to mitigate damage from Toxic Chain. Pokemon like Snorlax can also run Immunity to be completely immune to Toxic. Other Pokemon that counter Munkidori in this way include Galarian Slowking and Alolan Muk.

QC 1/2 - I left a lot of notes, so lmk if you have any questions. Also small GP thing - sentences should only have one space between them, not two.

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 4 6 onwards

**Price Range**: 10-11 6-8 points

**Overview**: Munkidori is a mid tier special attacker with only one glaring weakness. It can setup, wallbreak, pivot, or run more chip damage based sets. Munkidori's ability Toxic Chain can turn a lot of moves such as Fake Out and U-turn into potential strong momentum swings. Its strength as a special attacker is only limited by a poor coverage pool and middling bulk. It has to rely on the unreliable Focus Blast to hit Dark- and Steel-types, and its STAB combination is not very spammable, especially when Choice-locked. Its speed stat can also leave it out sped when not running choice scarf, while doing so might stop Munkidori from reaching KO thresholds on resists and even neutral enemies. While it is very fast, many faster foes can easily KO Munkidori, forcing it to use Choice Scarf more often than it wants. Reworded the part about speed & added a thing about its stab types not being spammable, feel free to reword in your own words

Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Munkidori can very easily deals lots of damage to unprepared teams, as a strong special attack stat paired with choice specs or other damage-boosting items can allow Munkidori to deal large chunks of damage to Pokemon that are not special tanks. Munkidori gets access to Nasty Plot, and as such can use that to break through defensive answers. Pairing with a damage boosting item such as life orb can allow Munkidori to knockout specially defensive pokemon more reliably. Moved this up to be mentioned next to choice specs

**Pivot**: Munkidori is a decent fast pivot. Next sentence is basically saying the same thing With access to two different pivoting moves U-turn and Parting Shot, Munkidori can easily pivot out against slower enemies. As a grounded poison, this allows Munkidori to effectively remove Toxic Spikes from your side of the field and maintain some momentum the turn after. not really relevant to the set U-turn synergizes with Munkidori's Toxic Chain ability, whereas Parting Shot can weaken incoming attacks for the Pokemon switching in. If Munkidori is running the Choice Scarf item, Trick can allow it to cripple potential opposing sweepers.

**Chip Damage Toxic Spreader**: Toxic Chain allows Munkidori to threaten chip damage on opposing pokemon that are not immune to being poisoned. Fake out gives Munkidori a free turn to proc the toxic affect, and U-turn can allow Munkidori to switch out while potentially poisoning the opposing Pokemon. Venoshock can be ran here so if the opposing Pokemon is poisoned Munkidori can threaten large amounts of damage.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Psychic, Psyshock, Sludge Wave, Venoshock, Future Sight

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot, Calm Mind

**Utility Moves**: U-turn, Trick, Parting Shot, Fake Out, Taunt, Clear Smog, Light Screen, Substitute Either put LS in niche or remove completely - it's not that common esp when it can't be paired with Reflect

**Coverage**: Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, Grass Knot, Tera Blast

Niche Moves
========
**Sludge Bomb**: Sludge Bomb can be run over Sludge Wave if you want to maintain damage while having a larger chance to status the opponent.

**Hex**: Hex can be a strong coverage move on sets that want to reliably poison the opponent, although it does not help too much against the better counters to that strategy.

**Psychic Noise**: Psychic Noise can help speed up the toxic clock against enemies bringing recovery items or recover variants. In addition, it can prevent Cresselia from healing the status with Lunar Blessing.

**Toxic**: If you want to guarantee the toxic status you can bring Toxic itself, although it does ignore the power of Toxic Chain.

**Protect**: If you are running a Toxic focused set, Protect can allow you to waste turns while the poison damage builds.
All 3 of these are fine as common moves

Common Items
========
**Choice Specs**: Choice Specs allows you Munkidori to deal large amounts of damage to slower opponents.

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Munkidori to out speed many threats while either dealing significant damage to those threats or pivoting into a Pokemon better suited for the matchup.

**Other Damage-boosting Items**: Life Orb allows you Munkidori to deal large amounts of damage while not being forced to select the same move. Twisted Spoon or Poison Barb can be used to boost those specific STABS, and Expert Belt can be run if the STAB and coverage are super effective into the Pokemon that would attempt to wall Munkidori.

Add boots - on pivot & toxic spreading sets it'll want to come in a lot

Niche Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Munkidori's lackluster bulk means in some matchups having the ability to guarantee live a single hit can allow Munkidori to eliminate a relevant threat.

**Black Sludge**: Investing in Munkidori's bulk combined with Fake Out and Protect on more Toxic focused sets mean black sludge can easily recover back resisted and weaker neutral hits.

**Assault Vest**: While Munkidori does not have the greatest defense, Munkidori is more specially bulky that physically. Combining that with a decent pool of moves to bring, With its already decent Special Defense, assault vest Munkidori can relatively easily live special attacks while attempting to spread Toxic still being able to deal damage, pivot, and spread Toxic.

**Colbur Berry**: As Munkidori is weak to Dark type moves, Colbur Berry can allow Munkidori to take the first Knock Off comfortably or power through a Sucker Punch.

**Throat Spray**: Psychic Noise can be brought to trigger this item, giving a lot of potential momentum swing in one turn with getting in chip damage while boosting Munkidori's special attack and potentially poisoning the opponent.
too niche

Tera
========
While Munkidori is not the strongest tera captain, Tera Blast can allow Munkidori to have a consistent coverage option for the Pokemon that would wall its STABS. Common tera types would be Ground, along with Fire and Fighting. In addition, Tera Dark and Tera Flying allows Munkidori to mitigate a significant portion of damage from potential supereffective Dark, Ghost, and Ground type attacks.

Draft Strategy
========
Munkidori is a frail special attacker that often requires teammates to knock out the walls that Munkidori cannot reliably beat can benefit teammates with its wallbreaking and Toxic-spreading abilities. It will not win games on its own in most cases, but it can provide valuable utility to its teammates. (Expanded on this more so it isn't just one sentence)

**A strong Ground/Fighting Physical Attacker**: As Steel type Pokemon are the best counters for Munkidori, they will often run special bulk and are thus more vulnerable to the supereffective Ground and Fighting attacks.

**Hazard Support**: Good hazard support can push defensive answers into ranges allowing Munkidori to knockout Pokemon that would otherwise threaten it. In addition, toxic spikes can allow Venoshock to deal large amounts of damage and Hex a much stronger coverage move.

**Slow Pivots**: While Munkidori can be a pivot, it is not bulky enough to switch into most attacks more than once. As such, a slower pivot can allow Munkidori to get in easier and apply pressure in different ways, whether it be to pivot on the opposing switch in or deal large amounts of damage.

Maybe add Bulky Pokemon - Mons that can sit on foes that Munkidori poisoned, making them take lots of extra chip damage

Make sure you add 2-3 examples for each section both here & in checks & counters. For example, for hazard support, you can mention Great Tusk, Iron Treads, and Ting-Lu.

Checks and Counters
========
**Steel Types**: Steel Types are immune to Poison and resist Psychic, greatly restricting the damage threatened by Munkidori. Focus Blast is the coverage move for them, but is an inaccurate option. In addition, Steel types are immune to the poison status, making Toxic Chain useless against them. As such either be prepared to pivot out against Steel types or have a good hard switch in. Alternatively, Nasty Plot can allow Munkidori to potentially reach the ability to KO the Steel type before it knocks out Munkidori.

**Dark Poison Type Pokemon**: Similar to Steel Types, Dark Poison type Pokemon are immune to one STAB and resist the other while being immune to toxic. In addition, they resist Munkidori's Ghost coverage, meaning its strongest neutral option is Focus Blast. Similar to Steel types, the best strategy is to pivot out of the matchup, or Nasty Plot could be used to boost through the opposing Pokemon. Although, the best neutral option is Tera Blast.
Too niche, there's like 2 viable options

**Specially Defensive Poison Immunes**: The most common of these would be Immunity Snorlax, who can take most attacks from Munkidori comfortably while being immune to Toxic Chain. If the pokemon is not a Dark Type, Psyshock will most likely be the best answer as it will bypass the special bulk of the opposing pokemon. Change this to just Specially Defensive Pokemon - you can mention specific examples like Immunity Snorlax, but you can also mention lum berry & rest as options

Add Faster Wallbreakers that can revenge kill it

This section should focus on how to beat munkidori, not necessarily how it gets around its checks - that's focused on through the rest of the analysis

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 6 onwards

**Price Range**: 6-8 points

**Overview**: Munkidori is a mid tier special attacker with only one glaring weakness. It can setup, wallbreak, pivot, or run more chip damage based sets. Munkidori's ability Toxic Chain can turn a lot of moves such as Fake Out and U-turn into potential strong momentum swings. Its strength as a special attacker is only limited by a poor coverage pool and middling bulk. It has to rely on the unreliable Focus Blast to hit Dark- and Steel-types, and its STAB combination is not very spammable, especially when Choice-locked. While it is very somewhat fast, many faster foes can easily KO Munkidori, forcing it to use Choice Scarf more often than it wants. (mention frisk briefly, it's a solid ability for scouting sets or weird items as munki pivots around)

Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Munkidori can very easily deals lots of damage to unprepared teams, as a strong special attack stat paired with choice specs or other damage boosting options can allow Munkidori to deal large chunks of damage. Munkidori gets access to Nasty Plot, and as such can use that to break through defensive answers. (move this below pivot)

**Offensive Pivot**: With access to U-turn and Parting Shot, Munkidori can easily pivot out against slower enemies. U-turn synergizes with Munkidori's Toxic Chain ability, whereas Parting Shot can weaken incoming attacks for the Pokemon switching in. If Munkidori is running Choice Scarf, Trick can allow it to cripple potential opposing sweepers setup sweepers and walls. (mention that scarf makes it good speed control)

**Toxic Spreader**: Toxic Chain allows Munkidori to threaten chip damage on opposing pokemon that are not immune to being poisoned. (mention that fake out also makes toxic damage build up once they're already poisoned and that protect can do the same thing)

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Psychic, Psyshock, Sludge Wave, Venoshock, Future Sight, Psychic Noise

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot, Calm Mind

**Utility Moves**: U-turn, Trick, Parting Shot, Fake Out, Taunt, Clear Smog, Substitute, Toxic, Protect

**Coverage**: Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, Grass Knot, Tera Blast

Niche Moves

**Hex**: Hex can be a strong coverage move on sets that want to reliably poison the opponent, although it does not help too much against the better counters to that strategy.

Common Items
========
**Choice Specs**: Choice Specs allows Munkidori to deal large amounts of damage to slower opponents. (combine with damage boosting items)

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Munkidori to out speed many threats while either dealing significant damage to those threats or pivoting into a Pokemon better suited for the matchup. (move to #1)

**Other Damage-boosting Item**: Life Orb allows Munkidori to deal large amounts of damage while not being forced to select the same move. Twisted Spoon or Poison Barb can be used to boost those specific STABS, and Expert Belt can be run if the STAB and coverage are super effective into the Pokemon that would attempt to wall Munkidori.

**Heavy-duty Boots**: Pivot and Toxic Spreading sets will be frequently entering the field, and as such can leave Munkidori vulnerable to hazard damage. Heavy-duty Boots can remove that chip damage allowing Munkidori to more freely switch back in.

Niche Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Munkidori's lackluster bulk means in some matchups having the ability to guarantee live a single hit can allow Munkidori to eliminate a relevant threat. (say this should be used as a lead or with very reliable removal)

**Black Sludge**: Investing in Munkidori's bulk combined with Fake Out and Protect on more Toxic focused sets mean black sludge can easily recover back resisted and weaker neutral hits.

**Assault Vest**: With its already decent Special Defense, assault vest Munkidori can relatively easily live special attacks while still being able to deal damage, pivot, and spread Toxic.

**Colbur Berry**: As Munkidori is weak to Dark type moves, Colbur Berry can allow Munkidori to take the first Knock Off comfortably or power through a Sucker Punch. (change this to include other resistance berries; could help with shadow sneak, or other types if you give it tera)

Tera

While Munkidori is not the strongest tera captain, Tera Blast can allow Munkidori to have a consistent coverage option for the Pokemon that would wall its STABS. (can expand this to talk about bringing them in with parting shot too, can also include a fire type instead of zapdos)

**Hazard Support**: Good hazard support can push defensive answers into ranges allowing Munkidori to knockout Pokemon that would otherwise threaten it. Pokemon like Ting-Lu, Gliscor, and Iron Treads fulfill this role. (mention that it wears down incoming steel types and forces even more chip damage onto poisoned foes)
