Now I'm pretty sure that you guys all know I'm into metal and bla di bla di bla and I like occasionally going to metal gigs to see my favourite bands play (don't we all.) Of course there's a lot of things that's a part of a gig experience: the atmosphere, the venue, the lighting, the band's performance, the setlist (such as: I'm going to kill Tony if SA doesn't play The Cage live), and so on and so on.

But there's one bit I don't like about metal/hardcore/wherever the fuck this appears gigs and that is a mosh pit. Of course I like progressive metal the most and then the audience is kind of mellow when it comes to mosh pits, but I find them unduly aggressive: I know that in the metal community, pits usually work out, but I still don't like them as I come to see the band, and not to get slammed into every other minute.

Does anyone else here have experiences with pits that they don't like? Or do like?

At a Slayer concert a German friend of mine got a bloody nose... I remained relatively unscathed. I dunno, I generally like mosh pits - they're usually pretty easy to avoid. Crowd surfing is way more annoying, I try to punch those guys whenever they come through.

Metal is for kids who arn't tough enough to handle hardcore. Some one throwing a table over me at a Fall Back/Years Spent Cold (before they became death metal).

I really don't think I have ever had so much fun in my life as I had at This is Hardcore in Philly last year. Every one knows everyone. Everyone sining along, jumping off the stage, and beating the shit out of each other. Good clean fun.

Philly/NJ hardcore gets a bad rep because of how many fights there used to be. But the scene got cleaned up big time by FSU...excluding 4-5 crime related incidents.

EDIT: Slayer rules none the less.

I've had many a pair of glasses broken in mosh pits, always a good laugh. And yeah, I agree with chaos about crowd surfers, got kicked in the head one too many times by those kinda people for my liking

Oh I'm seeing Slayer in november that's why I was asking.

(edit: with fucking mastodon and amon amarth and trivium so I expect some corekiddies to be (BAN ME PLEASE) during the trivium set, and we all know what slayer fans are like lol)

Fuck that noise, FSU is the biggest compilation of rageaholic douchenozzles I've ever had the displeasure of coming across.

I go to hardcore shows, I slamdance. It's more intense than "moshing," which is mostly just jumping around and bumping into each other. I personally can't stand people who slamdance with the sole purpose to hit/hurt others; that's not the fucking point. There is an unwritten law in pits, though, that you need to keep in mind: everyone looks out for each other. When someone falls down, 2 or 3 people pick them up right away. If someone is kneeling down to tie a shoe, people immediately form a wall around them to protect them. If a girl accidentally ends up in the pit and wants out, she will be helped out asap.

Crowd surfing is a dead practice; I did it back when it was on its way out in the late 90s and I weighed less. Whenever I see crowd surfers I go out of my way to knock them down. I fucking HATE it. (Those of us above 6 feet generally do, I got a concussion once from getting kicked in the back of the head.)

Ugh, they would have terrible pits at a Slayer show. Big names bands always draw the shitheads; not only the huge douchebags who like causing pain to others, but those little high school wanna-be shitheads who just get in the way. I don't go to big concerts/festivals anymore, the crowds ruin the experience for me.

people never seem to evil in pits, just get carried away.
Two tips, if theyve got lockers at the venue, use them. its so easy to loose your phone/wallet etc. whilst jumping.
Two, dont go moshing without your shoes on. speaks for itself.

I just go to see bands I like and go stand somewhere where there isn't too much pitting and more devil signs *laughs*

Dude FSU saved Tri State hardcore. Before they got in the picture there where Nazis at every show from Philly to CT. I have seen one at a show since 2004 and he got beat up and down a set of bleachers. People like Joe Hardcore and Matt Leak book so many shows and give struggling, and often but not always poor bands the opportunity they need to make some cash and a living off of music for a while. The best and funnest shows I have ever been to are booked and looked over by FSU.

They get a terrible wrap but after you go to shows for a good 4 years and start to know a bunch of em' you see through the bull shit fast.

Sexism wooooooooo!

Mosh pits are senseless. If you want to listen to music, then go to a concert; if you want violence, then go sign up for something in which you can hit people legally, or attack people at your school or whatever the fuck if you want to do it as senselessly as a mosh pit. I do not go to concerts for a band I do not love because of the cigarette smoke, pot smoke, mosh pits, and people genuinely being incapable at moving around and consequently jostling you over and over even if I stand in a position where no one would have to jostle me at all.

It's really not a metal concert without a mosh pit, though I generally avoid them simply because I'm not a violent person. I hate hardcore dancing though, the people who do that shit look like fucking idiots. If at all possible my friends and I attempt to shove them into the pit so they can get their asses beaten down. God must really hate metal if he allows something as retarded as hardcore dancing to even exist.

Fair enough, that might be true for your area, but keep in mind that with great power comes great responsibility. The shows I've gone to with FSU have been them acting like douchebags, getting in fights, taking over the pit by force and basically ruining the show for everyone else.

Trust me dude I know what your talking about. A guy who I knew in FSU who was a friend of mine is currently accused of manslaughter. There is always a bad apple in the orchard.

Hardcore isn't for every one. I personaly can't really think of anything that gives me the feeling a good harcore show does. Singing along with your firends band on stage, jumping on your bros back, letting your emotions just fly lose, and listening to music that fucking rules. Hardcore is only for certian types of people and I'm one of them. You ether like it your you don't. And if you don't stop fucking hating on something you don't can't and won't ever understand.

Well recently on Wenesday I saw Sevendust perform and the mosh pit was crazy as hell being since Sevendust was the headlining and they were back home in Atlanta, Georgia also this being my first concert I wasn't really bothered by it, eventually I got up in the front so it was cool also Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge singing Sorrow with Lajon's Sevendust for the first time live was awesome.

My brother goes to band show whenever he has the chance and money to do so and always has something to say about the mosh pits of the day. Sometimes it is funny like "and they played tennis with the duder" and others is goes more like "he fell and it generated a chain reaction which was not pretty". He kinda like mosh pits as long they keep it to bumps and pushes and not gratuitous violence. I've had my experiences with this kinda stuff, but we kept it to slamming our chests and shoulders against each other's. No one was forced into it again when they felt like getting the hell out, so it's all cool.

Mosh pits are kind of like country music: they're all kind of the same, they're done by shirtless white guys, and they are just really annoying in general.

to me.

Mosh pits aren't annoying, but you've gotta know what you're doing before you get involved... I too have had broken glasses, etc, but I don't regret getting knocked about and knocking other people about in return.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but moshpits and crowd surfing (awesome, by the way!) were banned at this year's download festival.

So true. I'm a completely different person at hardcore shows, once that adrenaline begins to flow and take over it's a feeling that is really unrivaled.

I had my knee gashed open at a Dropkick Murphys show. It was the band before them, and a few songs in I got bored and started slamdancing. Apparently someone behind me didn't like it (I wasn't within 4 feet of anyone) and I got pushed in the back into some jerkoff with chains and shit hanging from his shorts. Tore my shorts and my knee.

Some dude in the pit found a bandana on the ground, so I tied it around my knee and went back in. Stories like that, man, you just don't get at any old show.

convert to indie we just chill out and smoke pot

no seriously though pits can be fun, but you really cant pit and focus on the music at the same time, so I only would pit if I didnt like the band. The one exception was a Smashing Pumpkins gig where for one song (Bullet With Butterfly Wings), the whole crowd was just a giant pit. Tons of fun, but it really gets old after a while.

thats half of the fun of the concert, i guess if all you relaly do want to do is listen to the music it can be annoying, but might as well go along with it cause its usually just fellow fans wanting to have a fun time!

how fun smacking into one another

I'm 6'4" thank god I haven't had crowd surfers yet
