MPL Champion
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 8

**Price Range**: 1 point

**Overview**: Monferno enjoys most of the movepool as its evolved form, Infernape, but none of the base stats to back it up. As such, it is typically relegated to a fringe sacrificial Stealth Rock lead that takes advantage of Focus Sash + Endeavor to take a Pokemon down with it, and this predictability can make it very easy to play around. While Eviolite does not make its meager bulk all that much better, and its defensive typing would not support it anyway, it can still use it to tank some not very effective hits.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Sacrificial Lead**: With access to Stealth Rock, sacrificial lead Monferno sets itself apart from most of the other low-value sacrificial leads thanks to its access to Endeavor, giving it a way to make itself useful even at low HP.

**Defensive Pivot**: While Monferno does get good utility moves such as U-turn, Slack Off, and Will-O-Wisp, there will rarely be a practical use for most of them. However, it does have some useful resistances to types such as Steel and Dark that it can try to take advantage of.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Close Combat, Focus Blast, Low Kick, Mach Punch, Vacuum Wave, Flare Blitz, Overheat

**Utility Moves**: Brick Break, Encore, Endeavor, Knock Off, Slack Off, Stealth Rock, Switcheroo, Taunt, U-turn, Will-O-Wisp

**Coverage**: Grass Knot, Gunk Shot, Rock Slide, Shadow Claw, Thunder Punch, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========
**Fake Tears**: Monferno can run Fake Tears to lower its foe's Special Defense to weaken it for a teammate.

Common Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Sacrificial lead Monferno will often get OHKOed without a Focus Sash, and being able to follow up with Endeavor will take its foe down to 1 HP.

**Eviolite**: While it will not be hard to come by super effective coverage for Monferno, an Eviolite can let it survive some not very effective attacks.

Niche Items
========
**Damage-boosting Items**: Monferno can boost its damage with options like Expert Belt and Black Belt.

Tera
========
Monferno is too weak, slow, and frail to make any sort of usage out of Terastallizing. Make other Pokemon into Tera Captains.

Draft Strategy
========
As a sacrificial lead, Monferno appreciates being on more offensively oriented drafts. While it should not be brought to every game, if the opponent lacks reasonable entry hazard control, it can be a well-spent point. Keeping all of this in mind, however, it still faces competition from other one-point Pokemon that can do the same things as it and more.

**A Team Unreliant on Monferno**: A team that does not rely on Monferno to fit any roles is important, as it does not have any real role compression.

Checks and Counters
========
**Taunt**: A faster Taunt completely shuts down Monferno, as its damage output will rarely be enough to punish the Taunt user.

**Ghost-type Pokemon**: Pokemon with an immunity to Endeavor do not have to be terribly concerned about Monferno’s damage output.

As such, it is typically relegated to a fringe sacrificial Stealth Rock lead that takes advantage of Focus Sash + Endeavor to take a Pokemon down with it. mention somewhere how this makes monferno extremely predictable and easy to play around. Common Roles
========
**Sacrificial Lead**: With access to Stealth Rock, a sacrificial lead Monferno sets itself apart from most of the other low-valued sacrificial leads thanks to its access to Endeavor, giving it a way to make itself useful even at low HP.

**Defensive Pivot**: Well, Monferno gets good utility moves such as U-turn, Slack Off, and Will-o-Wisp. Can’t imagine a practical use for most of those, but Steel-type resistances are pretty good, so there’s that.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Close Combat, Drain Punch, Focus Blast, Low Kick, Mach Punch, Vacuum Wave, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Fire Punch, Flare Blitz, Overheat

**Setup Moves**: Agility, Bulk Up, Nasty Plot, Swords Dance I wouldn't mention setup for Monferno at all.

**Utility Moves**: Brick Break, Encore, Endeavor, Knock Off, Slack Off, Stealth Rock, Switcheroo, Taunt, U-turn, Will-O-Wisp

**Coverage**: Grass Knot, Gunk Shot, Poison Jab, Rock Slide, Shadow Claw, Thunder Punch, Zen Headbutt

Niche Moves
========
**Fake Tears**: As opposed to the real tears you will shed when realizing how much a fantastic movepool is wasted on Monferno, it can shed fake ones to lower its foes Special Defense to let a real Pokemon try and finish the job.

**Burning Jealousy**: If your opponent correctly identifies Monferno as a non-threat, they may want to set up on it. Burning Jealousy would punish that. too niche

Common Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Sacrificial lead Monferno will often get OHKO’d without a Focus Sash, and being able to follow up with an Endeavor will take its foe down to 1 HP.

**Eviolite**: While it will not be hard to come by super effective coverage for Monferno, an Eviolite can let it survive some not very effective attacks.

Niche Items
========
**Damage-boosting Items**: Monferno can pretend to be its big bro Infernape and boost its damage with things like Expert Belt and Black Belt.

Tera
========
Monferno is too weak, slow, and frail to make any sort of usage out of Terastallizing. Make other Pokemon into Tera Captains.

Draft Strategy
========
As a sacrificial lead, Monferno appreciates being on more offensively oriented drafts. While it should not be brought to every game, if the opponent lacks reasonable hazard control it can be a well-spent point. make a short mention that other 1-pointers that can actually provide more value than Monferno.

**A Team Unreliant on Monferno**: Not that Monferno has any real role compression, but a team that does not rely on it to fit any roles is important.

Checks and Counters
========
**Taunt**: A faster Taunt completely shuts down Monferno, as its damage output will rarely be enough to punish it.

**Draft Order**: Round 8

**Price Range**: 1 point

**Overview**: Monferno enjoys most of the set flexibility as its evolved form (Is this true? Set flexibility = number of sets it can run, but the analysis only has 2 common roles whereas Infernape has 4. If you mean it has a similarly wide moveppol, say that instead), Infernape, but none of the base stats to back it up. As such, it is typically relegated to a fringe sacrificial Stealth Rock lead that takes advantage of Focus Sash + Endeavor to take a Pokemon down with it, and this predictability can make it very easy to play around.
