[Overview]

Moltres is often overlooked in the standard Advance metagame because of its limited movepool and because of competition with Charizard. However, Moltres is quite an interesting pokemon, with a powerful 125 Special Attack stat and a STAB Fire Blast to boot, it is capable of being quite a threatening sweeper if played right. Unfortunately for Moltres, its movepool is extremely shallow which hurts it as far as gaining usage. Make no mistake though, a well played Moltres can be extremely deadly for an unexpecting opponent.

[SET]
name: Clear Skies
move1: Sunny Day
move2: Fire Blast / Flamethrower
move3: Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Ice
move4: Will-O-Wisp / Morning Sun
nature: Timid / Modest
item: Leftovers
evs: 40 HP / 252 SpA / 216 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Given Moltres' already incredible Special Attack stat and its STAB Fire Blast a boost from Sunny Day turns said move into a powerhouse. A Modest Sun boosted Fire Blast will even 2HKO Salamence! Hidden Power Grass is Moltres' first line of defense against Water-types who are oh so eager to switch in, but will not OHKO any of them except for Swampert. Will-O-Wisp is great for crippling Salamence but watch out for Choice Banded versions, who will still OHKO Moltres with Rock Slide even when burned. Morning Sun gives this set some recovery so it can stay out longer. Hidden Power Ice can be used to suprise Salamence and Dragonite switch ins.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

216 Speed EVs will give Moltres 270 Speed, outspeeding Adamant Heracross. The rest is pumped into Special Attack to hit as hard as possible and the remaining EVs can go into some sort of defensive investment. If one opts to run a Timid nature, then 228 Speed EVs can be used to reach 300 Speed, outpacing all neutral nature base 100s, such as Salamence.

[TEAM OPTIONS]

Celebi and Swampert are good teammates the former being resistant to Thunderbolt and Surf and the latter being immune to Thunderbolt and neutral to Surf. A strong Electric type such as Zapdos is a great choice for clearing out Water-type opponents. Moltres will also appreciate the company of a powerful Physical attacker to take out walls such as Blissey and Snorlax.

[OPTIONAL CHANGES]

Agility is useful for working with a set that recieves Calm Mind boosts from a passer such as Celebi or just as a suprise factor in general. Hidden Power Electric can also be used to catch Gyarados off guard, but Hidden Power Grass is generally better for Swampert. Thats pretty much all Moltres has to offer, I guess you could go with Toxic. Its got a pretty small movepool.

[COUNTERS]

Despite Moltres being so powerful, it does have counters. Blissey will stop this beast 100% of the time and Snorlax can put up a pretty good fight as well. Charizard will also take advantage of its resistances to all of Moltres' attacks and set up a Belly Drum. Tyranitar is also a decent choice for a counter but should look out for Will-O-Wisp. Milotic can also take on Moltres and OHKO back with Surf while gaining a defensive boost if it comes in on Will-O-Wisp.

I'm assuming the last "Moltres" in the Counters section is supposed to be "Milotic."

I don't really get the point of the resttalker set, it's clearly offensively build but somehow it's going to get some turns to Rest and Sleep Talk?

In my opinion the fact that a Pokemon has a small movepool does not justify listing a generic at best set that happens to fill two moveslots "obviously"

i agree, it's not going to survive long enough to do anything interesting with rest/sleep talk. it's also completely innocuous in every way and nothing more than a bad zapdos if it goes defensive.

instead the only worthwhile set is the sunny day set, which is kind of a bad charizard (except with will-o-wisp). c'est la vie, moltres sucks.

Just locking this since it's been forever since it was updated and the sections aren't nearly beefy enough to warrant replacing what's onsite atm
