Mismagius discussion

I'm fond enough of Mismagius that I've been examining it carefully over the past few days to see if there is anything it can do that Gengar can't. The short answer is "calm mind." The longer answer, I think, is "gimmicky stuff that might work sometimes."

This would be so much more impressive if Gengar didn't exist. Not that I'm saying I wish it didn't since I love Gengar, but I hate it when cool Pokemon get overshadowed by a similar one that's superior. Mismagius does have some small advantages over Gengar, most notably lack of psychic weak and high special defense. It's also got calm mind.

There are some duh sweeper sets, but I'm more keen on posting the gimmicky stuff I thought up. My favorite is this:

Mismagius @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Spd, 4 SpD, +Spd -Atk
- Mean Look
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Thunderbolt/Energy Ball/HP Ice/Dark Pulse

So stupid it might actually work. It revolves entirely around Blissey being on almost every team, and is especially good if they haven't got ice beam. Get in, mean look, sub against thunderwave, and you get to max out your calm minds for free. The obvious problem is you only get one attack. But it's a guaranteed Blissey KO, and if it's late game it might actually work as a whole team sweeper with all those calm minds—at the very least, you've killed their special wall and can probably put a dent in. Energy Ball is the best all-around choice in my opinion since it's got a lot of super effectives against major enemies, and nothing is immune to it. Thunderbolt would be better but then you're fucked if you meet a ground type. It's a shame normals are immune to ghost or Shadow Ball would go there.

I also thought of trying a calm mind + imprison set to use against other calm minders, but I'm not sure it's even as viable as this Blisstrapper thing.

There is of course the obvious perishtrapper set, but I think this is more fun. I'll be interested to try it out, at any rate. There are probably better Mismagius sets, so post some of them. Is there any way in which this Poke can outshine Gengar?

I don't think Mean Look is viable on it, if it mean looks Blissey, it really cannot beat the CM version of Blissey, which is very viable.

Mean Look is meh, I think it might work sometimes. But almost all Blisseys should have IB for Cspecs mence(JUMPMENCE!) So you might fail to sweep.

Hmm. I think Shadow Ball/HP Fight/Substitute/Calm Mind gives it the coverage it needs. If it has a sub up and Weaville comes in, A CM HP fight should OHKO. The problem with it, inevitably, is that CBPursuit whores are near 100% counters.

Too bad there is only 1 thing Mismagius has on Gengar - not being Poison. Helps a lot against those psychic types that might ruing Gar's day.

Ah, I see you don't remember the absolute "!%$^# &*(!$% Perish Song Misdreavus" days. Perish Trapping with 105 Base SD is LOL GG for Bloss.

Of course, the OP didn't have Perish Song on thier support list, leading me to believe they didn't check Misdreauvus' page.

I'm in the process of building a team and this thing used to be my lead, but I decided against it because of Pursuit. It's a serious shame though, it's so cool. Witch hat <3

It actually reminds me of Gardevoir a lot. I saw this set on Garde's Advance dex back when I first started on NB and came to Smogon, and it was fun and gimmicky - it works with Missy too:

Mismagius @ Salac?
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spd/4 HP
- Mean Look
- Taunt
- Destiny Bond
- Substitute

HP EVs are for 3 subs for Salac. You Mean Look/Taunt the special wall coming in, Taunt/Mean Look them next turn, Sub down to Salac and Destiny Bond for the kill. With Mismagius though, you're much faster than Gardevoir, outspeeding base 100s. You could give it a Lum Berry in case it gets status, paralyzation will mess this up, but Salac will guarantee you'll be faster.

Of course, compared to OP's set, you're not left with a +6 CM Mismagius. Hmm.

I did indeed forget to put Perish Song on. I did mention it in the post though and it's so standard it's really not that worthwhile to discuss...

After a Calm Mind, a Blissey Ice Beam won't break a 261/236 Mismagius's Sub. Mismagius is perfectly capable of pulling off the Raikou strategy, though how much better is debatable. It needs HP Fighting to actually beat Blissey, though. Of course, Blissey would be a pretty stupid switch into Mismagius given the likelihood of Perish trapping.

The most likely counter to Mismagius, then, is something that will do a lot of damage to it. The downside of things like Garchomp, though, is that it might eat a Will-O-Wisp.

That leaves Heracross, really - doesn't mind Wisp and can break it down hard if it tries to Perish trap. In this case, HP Flying is the only thing that can OHKO (if you start Calm Minding, Heracross will run like hell), and Shadow Ball/HP Flying seems a bit dubious...

I like a timid Mismagius with Shadow Ball/Energy Ball/Thunder Wave/Destiny Bond. Rapid Spinners can't nail Mismagius with EQ like it can with Dusknoir, and then they are faced with an unexpected energy ball from its fairly high SPA. Starmie has to deal with Mismagius' fairly high special defense and then eats a stabbed shadow ball.

Destiny Bond is great on Mismagius due to its high speed and low physical defense. I can't count the number of times i've seen Mismagius take out Garchomp with it on WiFi videos. Fortunately, Mismagius' speed and special attack makes it perfectly able to take out a poke or two before it has to resort to Destiny Bond. I truly feel that this thing is underrated, probably because Gengar exists - but Mismagius has a much better typing than gengar.

Actually, that might just be the best use for Mismagius. Spin blocking is something I hadn't even thought of. In that scenario it does seem to be a happy medium between Gengar and Dusknoir.

Yes, Mismagius is very underrated. Its special defense stat sets it apart from Gengar, so Gengar does not immediately outshine it because of that stat, if anything.

Perish Trapping Mismagius with that higher SpDef stat should work better than Misdreavus then, and Misdreavus used to work.

Mismagius @Leftovers

Owns Blissey, LOOOOOOOOL.

Dumb Question: How do you pronounce Mismagius?

I really like this thing because its more bulky than Gengar and still has awesome Speed and Special Attack. Gengar may be more powerful, but Mismagius I think has the durability to stay in a while longer and KO.

I think its

MISS-MAY-GUS

But on topic,

I see the PerishTrapping set becomming unorthadox, and could make short work of the opponants special walls who would switch in (Blissey cant beat it, Snorlax would be Mean Looked on the switch and Perish Songed after, making it a kinda sacrifice. Regice wouldnt be able to kill Mismaigus either).

Therefore Perishtrapping is my fav set.

How do you pronounce Mismagius?
I say miss-MAA-jus by elliding the 'i' in magius.

The perishtrapping set is top tier. Come in to block a rapid spin, scare away with threat with Energy Ball (sup Donphan, Claydol, and Starmie?), mean look the switch, perish, gay, gay, switch.

Ghost and Levitate is so damn fun as Gengar can attest to, switching in on CB physical attacks. I do wish she had a recovery move (for an all out Perishtrap set) or slightly better defense, but oh well. It was hard but Misdreavus could do it in GSC and slightly in ADV. With a big boost in stats (notably speed), it will be about as hard as it was in GSC all over again.

Love this thing. With a calm mind under its belt it makes a great special wall, blocks spin, can sub, thunder wave, WoW amongst other things. Brilliant.

I pronounce it Miss-Maaj-ee-us. 4 sylables. Miss, Maaj-ee (like Haji from Johnny Quest), us.

Stop the pronouncing stuff, please. ;.;

Actually I ran Substitute/Calm Mind/Thunderbolt/HP Grass on Misdreavus in Advance for a while. It is untouched by Blissey and any Snorlax that doesn't bring Shadow Ball to the table, which sets it apart from Raikou. Then again it was on a gimmick team.

Also, if everyone agrees something is underrated, what is it then? Yeah, not underrated at all.
