Offensive Mega Venusaur makes for a powerful attacker that is both tough to switch into and rather tough to take down thanks to Synthesis and a still impressive defensive profile even when uninvested. Between Sludge Bomb poisons and its good coverage, the only true switch in is Reuniclus, as everything else either risks a debilitating Poison or a coverage move that it doesn't want to take. Giga Drain is the preferred Grass STAB move thanks to its recovery options and consistency as an attacking move. Hidden Power Fire allows for Mega Venusaur to hit Scizor, Celesteela, Bronzong, and other Steel-types that wall its STAB moves. Earth Power can be run, however, as it allows Mega Venusaur to do more damage to Jirachi while still chipping offensive Scizor variants decently. Synthesis is used in the last slot to keep Mega Venusaur healthy. Knock Off is a decent enough option over the coverage moves, as it cripples Celesteela and Bronzong long term while also messing with Jirachi, Scizor, Amoonguss, and Rotom-H, but the immediate nature of the coverage moves provided are generally preferred. 136 Speed EVs allows Mega Venusaur to outrun Adamant Scizor, while the rest of it is dumped into bulk in order to complement Mega Venusaur's excellent bulk. Chlorophyll is the preferred pre-Mega ability, as it has fringe use against the rare Sun team and Overgrow is useless as Mega Venusaur will usually want to Mega Evolve immediately.

Offensive Mega Venusaur is a great fit on balanced and bulky offense teams, as it provides immense offensive pressure while also providing a defensive backbone that can adequately check threats such as Urshifu-RS and Tapu Bulu. However, be careful of Zen Headbutt from these threats if you are using it as a check to them. Late Game cleaners such as Gyarados, Salamence, and Scizor appreciate Mega Venusaur's early game wallbreaking prowess, as it can wear down threats such as opposing Scizor, Latias, and Jirachi for them. Mega Venusaur appreciates a secondary physical wall behind it, as it is a much worse check to threats like Weavile and Scizor without the defensive investment. Strong, physical walling from the likes of Buzzwole, Slowking, and Celesteela are good partners as a result. In addition, Slowking can pivot Mega Venusaur in, which is even more effective with Future Sight support and the fact that Slowking tends to draw in threats like Xurkitree and Grimmsnarl that Mega Venusaur can potentially take advantage of, while Slowking can sponge threatening Psychic-type attacks from the likes of Latias and Jirachi.

With good bulk, an excellent ability in Thick Fat, and methods of semi-reliable recovery, Defensive Mega Venusaur is a prominent check to many very threatening Pokemon, like Urshifu-RS, Tapu Bulu, Weavile, and Scizor. Leech Seed is preferred to apply constant pressure to threats such as Celesteela, Jirachi, and Scizor. Its effectiveness is exacerbated by the fact that most Grass-types, such as Tapu Bulu, Amoonguss, and Breloom are very hesitant to switch into Mega Venusaur. Giga Drain, on the other hand, is a more direct form of damage that also pushes the most damage onto Water-types like Urshifu-RS, Starmie, and Slowking. Hidden Power Fire is the preferred last move so that Mega Venusaur can apply huge pressure onto Scizor while also hitting Celesteela and Jirachi. Knock Off is another option to punish threats such as Celesteela, Bronzong, and Jirachi for coming in, however. Defensive investment is preferred to adequately check Scizor, Weavile, and Tapu Bulu.

Defensive Mega Venusaur is an excellent choice for balance teams thanks to the defensive attributes that it provides them while also still applying decent offensive pressure. Mega Venusaur forces a lot of switches, as it walls many Pokemon like Urshifu-RS, Breloom, and Rotom-W, so it is a good idea to play aggressively around these threats and double into a threatening breaker as they are forced out. Wallbreakers such as Diggersby, Buzzwole, and Weavile are option in this regard, with Diggersby in particular gaining an opportunity as it blocks Rotom-W's Volt Switch. Late Game cleaners are also good options to take advantage of Mega Venusaur slowly wearing down the opposition via Leech Seed and potential poisons, so options such as Gyarados, Infernape, and Porygon-Z work well. Mega Venusaur appreciates a complementary special wall, so options such as Blissey, Slowking, and Sylveon work well. Slowking in particular provides a very appreciated Psychic-resist, while Sylveon can pass Wishes to Mega Venusaur, alleviating the issue of Synthesis only having 8 PP.
