rayquaza is my dad
[OVERVIEW]
Mega Rayquaza is arguably the best offensive threat in Balanced Hackmons. Blessed with enormous Attack and Special Attack stats, very powerful STAB attacks, and a beneficial Speed tier, Mega Rayquaza is an exceptionally versatile wallbreaker with the ability to run a huge range of viable sets. Mega Rayquaza's flagship set is Aerilate, either the devastatingly powerful Choice Specs variant or the highly versatile mixed set with Extreme Speed. Sets with Triage and Contrary can easily boost up to unmanageable levels and sweep right through unprepared or weakened teams. Mega Rayquaza can also run countless sets beyond these, making it very difficult to switch into, as its sets typically have very different checks and counters. This unpredictability massively boosts its wallbreaking power by forcing the foe to play guessing games about which set it is running. For instance, sets such as Choice Band Tough Claws and Choice Specs Tinted Lens can surprise many of Mega Rayquaza's common checks, and Mega Rayquaza can usually very easily tweak its set to break past whatever it needs to. On top of this, Mega Rayquaza's very respectable bulk allows it to take all kinds of miscellaneous hits, such as Mega Gengar's Judgment and Xerneas's unboosted Moonblast. However, a weakness to Stealth Rock makes Mega Rayquaza easy to wear down, and its weaknesses to common Dragon-, Fairy-, and Ice-type moves limit its staying power. In particular, the very common Core Enforcer is an issue for Mega Rayquaza, as it deals a lot of damage and cripples many of Mega Rayquaza's sets. Mega Rayquaza's typing also gives it an unfortunate weakness to Pixilate and Refrigerate Extreme Speed, which can make it easy to revenge kill. Finally, while its Speed tier is quite solid, it falls short of popular threats like Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Mewtwo X. Despite all this, Mega Rayquaza's sweeping and wallbreaking ability is practically unmatched in Balanced Hackmons, and it is a Pokemon that cannot be overlooked in teambuilding.

Moves
========
When boosted and given STAB by Aerilate, Boomburst is Mega Rayquaza's most powerful attack. It is capable of 2HKOing practically anything that does not resist it, including enormously bulky Pokemon like RegenVest Primal Kyogre and Giratina. Draco Meteor cleanly OHKOes bulky Dragon-types like Giratina and Zygarde-C, and does an enormous chunk to Imposter Chansey. It also allows Mega Rayquaza to break through some common Soundproof Pokemon like Mega Slowbro. Secret Sword and Earth Power are both coverage moves to hit Steel-types like Registeel and Aegislash; Secret Sword has the advantage of OHKOing Mega Tyranitar and dealing more damage to RegenVest Steel-types like Dialga, whereas Earth Power hits Aegislash and is stronger against Solgaleo and Necrozma-DM. However, it misses Celesteela and fails to OHKO Mega Tyranitar. Magma Storm is an alternative that beats Sturdy Shedinja and 2HKOes some RegenVest Steel-types thanks to the passive damage it deals. However, it fails to hit Flash Fire Steel-types and has very shaky accuracy. Another valid option is Moongeist Beam, which takes out Sturdy Shedinja and is super effective against Aegislash and Solgaleo. Mega Rayquaza can also use Extreme Speed, as even unboosted, it is a powerful revenge killing tool that can be used to take out weakened targets, particularly frail or Flying-weak offensive threats like Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Gengar, and Mega Sceptile. If you choose to run Extreme Speed, a Naive nature is recommended. Volt Switch allows Mega Rayquaza to gain momentum against its defensive answers and wear them down over the course of the game by dealing damage and then switching into a Pokemon that forces them out. It is especially strong against Celesteela and Soundproof Slowbro, which are popular switch-ins to Mega Rayquaza. Trick can be used to cripple defensive Pokemon by giving them a Choice Specs; however, it is situational, as more often than not it is more effective for Mega Rayquaza to just hit them with its powerful attacks.
Set Details
========
Aerilate gives Mega Rayquaza's Boomburst and Extreme Speed STAB and boosts their power, massively increasing its wallbreaking ability. Choice Specs boosts Mega Rayquaza's damage output drastically, enabling it to score some crucial OHKOs and 2HKOs that it might otherwise miss. Notably, Mega Rayquaza needs the Choice Specs to OHKO Giratina with Draco Meteor and 2HKO RegenVest Primal Kyogre with Boomburst. A Timid nature leverages Mega Rayquaza's great Speed tier and gives it the jump over Mega Diancie, Kartana, and neutral-natured Arceus. Rash is an alternative to grant Mega Rayquaza a bit more wallbreaking power. Crucially, it lets Mega Rayquaza 2HKO Chansey and Registeel with Boomburst after Stealth Rock and guarantees the 2HKO on Celesteela.
Usage Tips
========
To fully take advantage of Mega Rayquaza's wallbreaking power, try to find lots of opportunities to bring it in. Switching it in directly can be risky, so you can try to get it in safely using slow pivoting moves like U-turn or by predicting a move that won't hurt it, like Recover or Defog. As this set carries a Choice Specs, it is important to predict the opponent to avoid being locked into an unfavorable move. Note that Mega Rayquaza's Boomburst is powerful enough to 2HKO most Pokemon, meaning that prediction is sometimes unnecessary. Volt Switch can be used to scout out the opponent's initial switch-in, which may ease prediction in the future. Watch out for Soundproof on Pokemon like Mega Slowbro and Mega Audino; it may be best to avoid clicking Boomburst against these Pokemon until you have scouted their abilities.
Team Options
========
Mega Rayquaza should be paired with a Pokemon that can handle an Imposter user that comes in against it. Which Pokemon you use for this depends entirely on which coverage moves you are using. In general, bulky Pokemon that resist Flying like Mega Tyranitar and Dialga or Soundproof Pokemon like Mega Audino work well in this role. If you are running Secret Sword, Pokemon like Solgaleo or Aegislash might be good choices. Mega Rayquaza appreciates Defog support to keep Stealth Rock off the field and keep it healthy throughout the game, and slow pivot support from Pokemon such as Registeel and Mega Audino can get Mega Rayquaza in safely to fire off attacks without risking switching it in directly. This set is very effective at wearing down Steel-types, so offensive threats that may struggle against those, like Poison Heal Regigigas and Pixilate Mega Diancie, make a good partner for it. Mega Diancie can also effectively run Stealth Rock, as it can easily get up the entry hazard by forcing switches and it dissuades common Magic Bounce Pokemon from switching in. With Stealth Rock and Spikes on the field, Mega Rayquaza is able to 2HKO many of the bulky Flying answers that it might struggle against otherwise.

Moves
========
Tail Glow more than doubles Mega Rayquaza's damage output, enabling it to break through walls and sweep weakened teams. Oblivion Wing is Mega Rayquaza's main STAB move. As Triage boosts it to +3 priority, it is a potent revenge killing tool and makes Mega Rayquaza very difficult to stop once it has boosted with Tail Glow. The healing it provides keeps Mega Rayquaza healthy and stops it from being worn down by entry hazards and Life Orb recoil. Secret Sword scores a super effective hit on the Steel- and Rock-types that can take Oblivion Wing. It is also Mega Rayquaza's strongest move against some other miscellaneous Pokemon, like Mega Gyarados and Fur Coat Chansey. Moongeist Beam knocks out Shedinja and bypasses Unaware, allowing Mega Rayquaza to bust through Pokemon like Unaware Primal Kyogre. With boosts from Tail Glow and Life Orb, it can 2HKO most Steel-types. Draco Meteor, particularly with Dragonium Z, is a nuke after a Tail Glow that takes out some of the popular answers to Triage Mega Rayquaza, like RegenVest Primal Kyogre. Additionally, it allows Mega Rayquaza to OHKO Giratina and Zygarde-C unboosted. Giga Drain is primarily used to beat Pixilate Mega Diancie, as it outprioritizes Mega Diancie's Extreme Speed and knocks it out after a Tail Glow. It is a also a strong option against Mega Tyranitar and Water-types like Mega Gyarados and Primal Kyogre. Substitute protects Mega Rayquaza from status moves like Nuzzle and Spore, prevents Imposter users from Transforming into it, and blocks Topsy-Turvy. However, Mega Rayquaza often cannot afford to forgo a coverage move. Spore can also be used to cripple some of Mega Rayquaza's checks, such as RegenVest Primal Kyogre and Chansey. With Spore, Safety Goggles should be used as the item to protect Mega Rayquaza from its Imposter's Spore.
Set Details
========
Triage gives Mega Rayquaza +3 priority on Oblivion Wing, and, if it opts to run it, Giga Drain. This allows Mega Rayquaza to serve as an effective revenge killer and sweep more effectively after a Tail Glow. It is especially notable that Triage moves have higher priority than Extreme Speed, making it very difficult for -ate Extreme Speed users like Kyurem-B and opposing Mega Rayquaza to revenge kill this set. A Life Orb is used to increase Mega Rayquaza's wallbreaking power. The healing that Oblivion Wing provides compensates for the recoil damage. Dragonium Z can be used with Draco Meteor to bust through some of Mega Rayquaza's usual checks, like RegenVest Primal Kyogre and specially defensive Mega Tyranitar. A Modest nature increases Mega Rayquaza's damage output significantly. Triage Mega Rayquaza can afford to run Modest more than other Mega Rayquaza sets due to its primary STAB attack being a priority move. However, Timid is still a very reasonable option to outspeed Mega Diancie, which is particularly relevant against its Fake Out.
Usage Tips
========
Triage Mega Rayquaza works best late-game, when its checks and counters have been sufficiently weakened. Identify what answers your opponent has for it and try to wear them down. Oblivion Wing recovers a lot of HP, particularly against Pokemon with high HP stats like Giratina and Zygarde-C. Sometimes it can be the right move to use Oblivion Wing just to heal up if Mega Rayquaza has been worn down, even if it is not the move that would deal the most damage. Mega Rayquaza can be effective at revenge killing boosted sweepers, but be mindful of the possibility of them having priority-blocking abilities like Dazzling and Queenly Majesty. Blindly clicking Oblivion Wing against these Pokemon can cause you to lose Mega Rayquaza unnecessarily, or even give them an opportunity to set up. Both Core Enforcer and Spectral Thief can end Mega Rayquaza's sweep prematurely, by suppressing Triage to allow it to be revenge killed or by stealing away its boosts, respectively. Be careful against Pokemon like Giratina and RegenVest Primal Kyogre, which commonly run these moves.
Team Options
========
If an Imposter user switches in against Mega Rayquaza, it's important to have a plan to deal with it. A Pokemon with the ability Unaware, like Mega Audino or Primal Kyogre, is a good choice for this role. With Spore and Safety Goggles, Mega Rayquaza can sometimes defeat its own Imposter thanks to the obscene amount of HP it recovers with Oblivion Wing, due to Chansey's very high HP stat. Mega Rayquaza can sometimes struggle to break through some bulky Steel-types, so Pokemon like Pixilate Mega Diancie that can lure them in and weaken them makes a good partner. Mega Rayquaza's weakness to Stealth Rock means it also appreciates solid Defog support.

Moves
========
Draco Meteor is a very powerful STAB move that also raises Mega Rayquaza's Special Attack by two stages thanks to Contrary. V-create hits Steel-types for enormous damage and boosts Mega Rayquaza's Speed and defenses, making it very challenging to revenge kill. Sunsteel Strike knocks out Sturdy Shedinja and hits Fairy-types like Mega Audino and Mega Diancie hard, dissuading them from switching into Mega Rayquaza's Draco Meteor. Leaf Storm is an option that, when boosted by Life Orb, can also 2HKO most Fairy-types on the switch. It is also Mega Rayquaza's strongest move against Mega Tyranitar and Primal Kyogre. Superpower boosts Mega Rayquaza's Attack and Defense and hits Flash Fire Steel-types like Registeel that it might struggle to get past otherwise. It also OHKOes Mega Tyranitar. Substitute is a niche option that prevents Imposter from Transforming into Mega Rayquaza, and after some defense boosts from V-create or Superpower, Mega Rayquaza's Substitutes can be difficult to break. However, Substitute does not protect Mega Rayquaza from Spectral Thief or the ability-nullifying effect of Core Enforcer, so its utility is limited, and it is often not worth sacrificing a coverage move.
Set Details
========
Contrary turns the drawback of moves like Draco Meteor and V-create into a bonus, enabling Mega Rayquaza to quickly rack up boosts while throwing out powerful attacks. Life Orb boosts the power of all of Mega Rayquaza's attacks, making it far more difficult to wall. The recoil wears Mega Rayquaza down quite quickly however. Draco Plate is an alternative that powers up Draco Meteor without dealing any recoil damage, increasing Mega Rayquaza's longevity at the cost of some of its wallbreaking prowess. This particularly makes Mega Rayquaza's coverage moves far weaker, though, and makes it notably miss the OHKO on Registeel with V-create. A Naive nature is used to ensure that Mega Rayquaza outspeeds Pokemon like Mega Diancie and Kartana without lowering either of its attacking stats. Naive is chosen instead of Hasty so that Mega Rayquaza's Draco Meteor deals more damage to Imposter Chansey and so that Mega Rayquaza can survive an Extreme Speed from Pixie Plate Pixilate Mega Diancie.
Usage Tips
========
Mega Rayquaza functions best later in the game, when opposing Imposter users, Flash Fire Steel-types, and Unaware Pokemon have been weakened. Being hit by Spectral Thief can be disastrous for Mega Rayquaza, as it will lose all of its boosts and potentially give the opponent a lot of momentum. Be sure to scout for Spectral Thief to avoid being caught off guard by it, and be particularly wary around common users of the move, like RegenVest Primal Kyogre. Similarly, moves like Core Enforcer and Entrainment that remove Mega Rayquaza's ability can prevent it from boosting and severely hinder its ability to sweep and break walls. It is often correct to use V-create just to get the Defense and Speed boosts even when it is not the most powerful option, to avoid being revenge killed later on. Many of Mega Rayquaza's moves have very low PP, so avoid throwing out attacks too recklessly if you anticipate the game going long.
Team Options
========
If Imposter Chansey switches in against Mega Rayquaza, you could be in a lot of trouble unless you have a dedicated answer to it. Due to its power and ability to quickly rack up boosts, this set can be difficult to Imposter-proof. If you forgo Sunsteel Strike, Unaware Mega Audino and Sturdy Shedinja are both decent options. Unaware Primal Kyogre does a decent job against sets without Leaf Storm, although it has to be kept very healthy to avoid being 2HKOed by Draco Meteor, especially if Stealth Rock is on the field. Furthermore, more niche options like Flash Fire Magearna are a hard stop to variants of Contrary Mega Rayquaza without Superpower when copied by Imposter, but they may be subpar options otherwise. Mega Rayquaza is worn down quickly by Stealth Rock, so it appreciates entry hazard control to keep them off the field. Normal- and Dark-type wallbreakers like Poison Heal Regigigas and Choice Band Mega Tyranitar can gain a lot of momentum by switching in on the Spectral Thiefs that Mega Rayquaza baits, and Pixilate Mega Diancie with Precipice Blades can lure in and weaken Flash Fire Steel-types that sometimes give Mega Rayquaza trouble. Slow Pokemon like Registeel and Mega Audino with a pivoting move like U-turn can be used to get Mega Rayquaza in safely to start throwing out attacks and boosting up.

Moves
========
Boomburst is a very powerful STAB move that 2HKOes most Pokemon that do not resist it. Extreme Speed is a very potent revenge killing tool that can easily pick off weakened targets. It is particularly effective because very few relevant offensive threats in Balanced Hackmons resist Flying. V-create is a coverage move that hits Steel-types hard: with a Life Orb, even Registeel is OHKOed. However, it is ineffective against Flash Fire Steel-types and the stat drops will often cause Mega Rayquaza to be forced out. Precipice Blades is a decent alternative, as it hits Flash Fire Steel-types as well as Rock-types like Mega Tyranitar and Mega Diancie, however it's not quite as powerful as V-create and misses some KOs that V-create achieves. Magma Storm may also be used here: it is weaker and less reliable than Precipice Blades and V-create against Steel-types, but its passive damage knocks out Sturdy Shedinja. Mega Rayquaza has many potent options in the final moveslot. Fake Out makes Mega Rayquaza more effective at revenge killing, as the extra damage allows Extreme Speed to knock out some Pokemon that it would not be able to otherwise, such as Mega Mewtwo Y. Alternatively, Draco Meteor can be used alongside a Life Orb to OHKO Giratina, Zygarde-C, and Zekrom and deal hefty damage to Imposter Chansey. Mega Rayquaza will often be forced out after using it due to the stat drops, however. Sunsteel Strike can be used to take down Sturdy Shedinja and hit Rock-types like Mega Diancie and Mega Tyranitar hard. King's Shield is a niche option that helps Mega Rayquaza beat other -ate users, like Mega Diancie and Kyurem-B.
Set Details
========
Aerilate gives Mega Rayquaza STAB on Boomburst and Extreme Speed in addition to boosting their power. This enables Mega Rayquaza to serve as both an effective wallbreaker and a revenge killer. Life Orb bolsters Mega Rayquaza's damage output and in particular makes it far more effective at picking off weakened offensive threats. However, it leaves it very easily worn down especially in conjunction with its weakness to Stealth Rock. Sky Plate is an alternative that still gives Mega Rayquaza a solid power boost but doesn't wear it down as much. However, with Sky Plate, Mega Rayquaza's coverage moves are much weaker; notably, V-create fails to OHKO Registeel and Draco Meteor will not OHKO Giratina. A Naive nature increases Mega Rayquaza's Speed without compromising its power. Naive is chosen over Hasty so that Mega Rayquaza survives Pixilate Mega Diancie's Extreme Speed.
Usage Tips
========
Pokemon with the abilities Dazzling and Queenly Majesty are immune to Mega Rayquaza's priority and often carry moves that hit Mega Rayquaza very hard or OHKO it outright. Try to scout to avoid being caught off guard, and in particular be wary of common users of these abilities, like Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Gengar. Mega Rayquaza is effective at wallbreaking early-game, but don't play too recklessly with it if you might need it to revenge kill a dangerous setup sweeper. Try to keep the field clear of Stealth Rock to avoid letting Mega Rayquaza get worn down, as it often wants to switch in many times throughout the match.
Team Options
========
To deal with an Imposter Chansey that switches in against Mega Rayquaza, you can run a Soundproof wall like Mega Audino or perhaps a Flash Fire Steel-type like Registeel. Which Pokemon you use in this role depends entirely on which coverage moves you opt to run on your set. This Mega Rayquaza set fits particularly well on offense teams that appreciate the role compression it offers as both a powerful wallbreaker and a check to various dangerous offensive threats. Mega Rayquaza appreciates being paired with a Spikes setter like Primal Groudon and Poison Heal Mega Mewtwo X to help it wear down the bulky Steel- and Rock-types and Imposter Chansey that like to switch in against it. A Steel-type with a Rocky Helmet can wear down Pixilate Mega Diancie and Refrigerate Kyurem-B and punish them if they try to revenge kill Mega Rayquaza with Fake Out or Extreme Speed. As with most Mega Rayquaza sets, Defog support from Pokemon such as Giratina and Registeel helps keep it healthy to apply pressure throughout the game.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Mega Rayquaza is exceptionally versatile and can run a wide variety of sets beyond those listed here. Sets with Tinted Lens and either Choice Band or Choice Specs can be extremely difficult to switch into, being able to 2HKO the Steel-types that like to come in against Mega Rayquaza. Tough Claws Mega Rayquaza with either Choice Band or Life Orb is a very dangerous wallbreaker that takes full advantage of Mega Rayquaza's monstrous Attack stat and the high Base Power of Dragon Ascent. This set often runs Dragon Ascent, Close Combat, Dragon Hammer, and either Extreme Speed, Bolt Strike, or Sunsteel Strike. A mixed Adaptability set holding a Life Orb with the moves Dragon Ascent, Clanging Scales, and V-create can be exceptionally difficult for many teams to switch into, although it can be easily worn down and doesn't offer the utility as a revenge killer that many other Mega Rayquaza sets do. The Contrary set can forgo Draco Meteor and run a set with Draco Plate Judgment alongside Shore Up, Leaf Storm, and V-create to reliably defeat its own Imposter. Choice Scarf is also a valid option on Contrary sets; it is not as effective at sweeping, but it supports the team by checking Pokemon like Mega Gengar and Mega Mewtwo X and can beat its own Imposter if it locks into Draco Meteor. Mega Rayquaza can make for an effective Shell Smash sweeper, using either Unburden + White Herb or Dazzling + Focus Sash. Shell Smash is also an option on the Triage set in conjunction with Drain Punch, which Mega Rayquaza can use to reliably beat Prankster Registeel. A set holding a Sitrus Berry and the ability Unburden with Belly Drum, Dragon Hammer, Sunsteel Strike, and a coverage move to hit Steel-types makes for an effective late-game sweeper that can defeat Imposter Chansey. However, it is easily revenge killed by Pixilate Mega Diancie and often struggles to find opportunities to set up. An unconventional but nonetheless effective set runs Quick Feet + Flame Orb with the moves Tail Glow, Oblivion Wing, and Ice Beam to serve as a dangerous late-game sweeper that can defeat its own Imposter and naturally outspeeds fast threats like Mega Gengar and Mega Mewtwo X.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Bulky Flying Switch-ins**: Pokemon like Mega Tyranitar and Registeel can take Mega Rayquaza's Oblivion Wings and Aerilate-boosted attacks, although they may struggle against Mega Rayquaza's coverage moves. Flash Fire Celesteela is a particularly good choice, as it is immune to Fire- and Ground-type coverage that Mega Rayquaza often uses to hit Steel-types.
**Pixilate and Refrigerate**: Refrigerate Pokemon such as Kyurem-B and Mega Mewtwo X and Pixilate Mega Diancie can easily pick off Mega Rayquaza with their super effective Fake Out and Extreme Speed. Mega Diancie is particularly notable, as it also resists Mega Rayquaza's Flying-type moves and is immune to Dragon, allowing it to serve as a switch-in to Mega Rayquaza in an emergency.
**Soundproof**: Soundproof users like Mega Audino and Zygarde-C are immune to Aerilate Mega Rayquaza's Boomburst, but these can often be overcome by a coverage move or by Life Orb-boosted Extreme Speed.
**Sturdy Shedinja**: Shedinja is not affected by most of Mega Rayquaza's attacks and will usually force it out unless it runs a move like Moongeist Beam, Sunsteel Strike, or Magma Storm specifically to beat it.
**Imposter**: While Imposter Chansey often struggles to switch in against many Mega Rayquaza sets repeatedly, it often beats Mega Rayquaza in a one-on-one situation, forcing you to pair Mega Rayquaza with a Pokemon that can beat its Imposter.
**Fur Coat Chansey**: Thanks to its immense mixed bulk, Fur Coat Chansey can easily take hits from most Mega Rayquaza sets.
**Dazzling and Queenly Majesty**: Pokemon with priority blocking abilities can be difficult for Triage and Aerilate Mega Rayquaza sets to deal with, as these sets often rely on their priority moves to beat faster threats.
**Bulky Fairy-types**: Defensive Fairy-types like Mega Audino, Magearna, and Xerneas are immune to Mega Rayquaza's powerful Dragon-type moves and can force it out with their Fairy-type STAB attacks, although they may struggle to switch into Mega Rayquaza's Flying-type moves.
